I read another review of this that is spot on because it focused on perspective. This is an old…read moreschool small amusement park that is perfect for a fun day with kids. There are a wealth of rides across several different ages, and park admission includes Storyland access and unlimited City Park train rides. It'll be a blast for the kids, and they won't get tired of it; I've also never been there when lines were long. My only issue is that the park is staffed by mostly (but not all) rude young adults (perhaps teenagers but hard to tell) who have no desire to do an efficient or effective job. I'm not even asking for you to go above and beyond to make it special for kids; simply doing your job would be nice. Saying rides are on hold while you sit and do nothing, claiming that the a particular ride only rides every 10 minutes, cutting rides short on purpose (they literally would say it out loud), and so forth are all indicative of issues that could be easily fixed.

Perspective is everything. To my seven-year-old, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park provided two hours…read moreof fun running from ride to ride. They sell pizza and ice cream. Kids love this place. (At least my seven-year-old did. However, in a few years, she'll outgrow the rides.) To parents, this place is a great way to spend a few hours visiting City Park, but it comes with a price. It was $21 for our daughter and just over $12 per parent. However, once you pay, you get unlimited rides. The rides themselves are old and run down, but the plus is there were no lines on a Sunday afternoon in April. It has clean restrooms and the train is a fun way to see a part of City Park. Next door is Storyland, a storybook-themed playground that's free.

After you purchase your ticket, you enter the Insectarium first. Once you exit the insectarium, you enter the aquarium, where they also exhibit other animals. First stop is a large albino alligator. He just hung out in one spot while I was there. They also have turtles, frogs, a rescued owl, ducks, a rescued falcon, parrots, penguins, jelly fish, and fish. The rescued owl and falcon lived in their own enclosures. The penguin enclosure is as expected. It included water and faux ice structures. There were a couple penguins that were interacting with all the visitors. They were swimming in place, bobbing up and down. Everyone who walked by was taking selfies with them. Adorable. This is a perfect place for the entire family. The different areas flowed well. Visitors aren't confused where to walk next. It's educational and rescued birds reside here.

So many types of insects exhibited in their environments. I particularly liked the velvet red ants. Ginormous. Can't really say I spent too much time reading any of the information on the insects. The space is dark. There's also a cafe where you can snack on insects. Again, not really my cup of tea. Thanks, but no thanks. My favorite part of the insectarium, where I spent most of my time, was the butterfly atrium. What an absolutely spectacular place. Heavenly. When you walk through one door, it has to close before another door opens. This is to ensure no butterflies escape. As soon as I walked in, there were hundreds of butterflies! Of all shapes and sizes, blue, brown, white, yellow, orange and black. The majority of them were attached to the window where they thought they could fly out. There's different types of plants for them to land on. Fruit and sponges with nectar are set throughout the trail for them to land and suckle on. There's a walkway for visitors, but you have to be careful because butterflies land on the walkways, too. You're not supposed to touch or hold the butterflies, but it's fine if they land on you. The staff member there kept repeating not to touch the butterflies because there was a child who kept grabbing at them. You could tell some of the butterflies were man handled because pieces of their wings were missing. Honestly, it's pretty hard to keep your hands to yourself when there are so many butterflies flying around your head.

The insectarium was clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate. My favorite part was the butterfly room. I also got to eat free chocolate chirp cookies and apples and cinnamon roasted mealworms. We spent about 5 hours at the aquarium and insectarium, including a beverage break at Cafe Aqua. They do have some extras like a hurricane simulator and VR chairs. It's a little pricy, but all the bugs and the facts they list about them was worth the price.

One of the highlights for me was a modern twist on the classic Sazerac--an elderberry and amaro version that was complex, unique, and unexpected. I also tried a coffee-inspired Sazerac that was incredibly smooth, with rich espresso notes that balanced perfectly with the bold flavors of the original. It was so good it honestly made me forget about Patrón XO Cafe. Each floor includes a tasting sample along with a recipe card, which was such a nice touch and makes it easy to recreate the drinks at home. The space is very well set up, with elevators and bathrooms on every floor, and you can even see parts of the distillery during the experience. Overall, it's an engaging, well-organized tour that's both informative and fun. Definitely worth it if you're interested in cocktails or want to learn more about spirits.

In hindsight, this absolutely deserved a spot on our itinerary. It's a unique combination of a liquor shop, museum, and immersive experience, where they walk you through the history of some of the iconic drinks that originated in New Orleans. The entire experience from the visuals to the storytelling to the tastings comes together beautifully. I was genuinely amazed that something this well done is offered for free. After the tour, we wanted to pick up a few bottles, but unfortunately they were out of what we were looking for. We even came back the next day, but it was still out of stock, which was a bit of a letdown. The staff was incredibly friendly and took the time to answer all our questions. Overall, this is a must-do experience if you're in the area.

I may have missed that…read more"something" and would love if somebody would send me a note and tell me otherwise, but there isn't anything in this area to do. I did see a couple of coffee shops on my way to this park, but other than that I don't see hordes of people coming over here to this area. I would say you are better off not coming across the river and just go to the 3rd floor of the Riverwalk Mall and let your children play in the indoor play area. There is a nice food court and bathrooms really close by. Based on the previous reviews, and google searches of "things to do with kids in NOLA" I had high expectations of this park. What I saw when I arrived was a junk yard of misfit toys and beat up playground equipment. I know I'm being very critical of a playground for kids, but this is a poor excuse of a playground. In order to get here you need to purchase a ticket for the Ferry. The ferry leaves every 30 minutes and only costs a few bucks. The ride takes about 5 minutes to get across the river. Then it's about a 15 min walk to the park. I wouldn't say the area is unsafe, but I would suggest staying on the main roads if possible. The playground located on a street corner in the middle of a neighborhood. The playground is fenced in which I thought was nice. There were lots of toys inside, some of which were broken. The toys seemed to have been dropped by locals who just didn't want them anymore. There were a few swings, and a play set with a slide. There was also a rather large mulched area where kids can just run around. I will warn you, if it has rained recently then the playground is rather muddy. Over all it was a nice time for my little one to run around outdoors, in an enclosed area. Bathrooms - These seem to be few and far between in this town. The day was saved when I found out there was a coffee shop next door called "One Stone" that had a kid friendly bathroom. There was a really nice changing table in there with spare diapers and wipes. Had it not been for this saving grace we might have left just as soon as we arrived. **Be sure to read my review of "One Stone" as its worth visiting if you come over here for the park. Would I come back? Maybe. "One Stone" was pretty cool, but there are so many closer and better things on the other side of the river that there just isn't much of a draw to come back over here.
