This retirement home used to be The Inn on the Pond and was excellent; it was very expensive compared to other homes in the area, but seemed worth it based on the quality of life its residents enjoyed. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago there was a change of management, and now the place is called The Preserve and is as pricey as ever, but the level of care and service has dropped off significantly. There are still lovely and capable people working there, but the management has cut back on the number of staff, such that for much of the day there's only one person on duty per floor, and if that person is on break, it might mean one staff person might be asked to cover *two* floors' worth of residents. (That's what I observed last time I visited and was shocked.) So if more than one person needs help at the same time, it can mean a lot of waiting. And old people often do need help. My elderly relative fell, and no one responded to her call for help for over half an hour. They also wake up some of the residents at 5:00 a.m. (breakfast is at 8:00 a.m.) because they don't have enough staff to wake everyone up at 6:30 or 7:00. So some people get woken at 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. and then they sit around waiting for breakfast time. The quality of the food served at meals has also declined dramatically. And I also noticed that some of the group activities that used to all be led by staff members are now being led by residents instead (e.g. song hour). I guess eldercare is a for-profit business. The Preserve has attractive grounds and a very nice building. I have no idea if other places in the area are better run. Having seen this place provide such better service in the past, I can't help finding all these developments really disappointing. read more
