I would give them zero stars if I could. I signed up for the special offer of six months for $1, and everything was fine at first. Then I suddenly got blocked by their system. I spent days working with their online support, exchanging at least 10 emails trying to resolve the issue. Despite all of that, they were never able to fix it. Their system kept telling me I wasn't subscribed, and when I tried to reset my password, I never received the password reset emails. The problem was clearly on their end, not mine. Customer service eventually offered me a partial refund, so I assumed the issue would finally be resolved. When the credit never appeared, I called to follow up and was told the refund had been denied. I paid for a subscription I couldn't even use because of their technology problems, and they refused to make it right. Customer service is a joke. With newspapers struggling to keep subscribers, you'd think they'd value someone who was actually willing to pay for a subscription--especially at today's prices. Instead, they hid behind a broken system and failed to stand behind their own service. They've lost a customer for life. read more

This so called "local paper" has taken a real dive in reporting the news. When I started my subscription in 1996, there were 100,000 paid subscribers. In 2023 that number had dropped to 38,000 ( digital and paper). I am assuming that number has now gotten lower since the Press Democrat won't release their subscription numbers for 2025. Why the drop? Well when you hire reporters who only fit "your culture" who don't know anything about Sonoma County and the North Bay, you get articles written based on social media feeds instead of talking to actual people involved in the local events. Also, when everyone on a newspaper organization thinks the same, you get biased reporting on events and issues only the newspaper team members feel are relevant, not the paid subscribers. You can see this in their online comments section for paid subscribers where commenters who think outside "the culture" of the Press Democrat get their comments deleted and sometimes get suspended by the unnamed Press Democrat Moderator. My subscription is coming up at the end of the year and I will be ending it after 29 years. I can go online and read the social media feeds myself without someone adding their own biased interpretation of events without paying nearly $300 a year. Bye bye Felicia! read more

3 stars, not 5. Reason? I like the coverage over all; Sherrie l where else can we get true local on the beet news? I enjoy some of the weekly papers out there like the gazette, but this is truly daily. But minus two stars for the business side. We became accustomed to the paper just stopping delivery of you didn't renew. I found a deal on their website and signed up for a new subscription knowing the old one was coming to an end. The old was very expensive, like $180 fit 3 months. This deal was $11 for first month, $63 approx for next 3 months, and every 3 months thereafter. But they started sending two papers and it turns out, they no longer just stop delivering when your subscription runs out, they just start a bill that becomes past due. I called to check in and they wanted to charge an additional $25 for an extra few days of the paper with the old rate. I complained and she reduced that to $12. I just paid to get off the phone after two calls to people assigned to billing that work in the Philippines. No more local billing. They said they no longer ever stop delivering unless you call to cancel. It will always now be a continued subscription of whatever you agreed to till you actually cancel yourself, and you will owe. read more

I will not be renewing, for the following reasons: *Today, the regime deactivated a true, verifiable response, the first of two, that I've made in many weeks, and not for the first, or 100th time- it's routine. *You will only see the political position they hold, represented on their pages, as much as they can possibly manage it- which is about 90% of the time, if I'm generous. *This is not a newspaper that reflects American rights or freedoms, rather, they publish articles and editorials that make arguments against it. *This is a compilation paper in that a large portion of their articles are far left leaning, and taken from other news agencies. *This is a site that will endlessly frustrate all users, with endless popups, clunky operation, and constant inaccessibility for a whole host of absurd reasons. *This paper is inconsistent, constantly changing their commenting policies, desperately trying to hone in on how they can shut down opposing opinions. *This is a place that constantly takes one back in time, a place in history, where it all started with propaganda and censorship. *This is a newspaper that is embarrassing to our area, for the reasons stated above. I subscribed to Press Democrat to follow my 2 Granddaughters playing Volleyball and Soccer at Sonoma Valley HS. So far every week I click on sports I have my screen go blurry and am told to link on. Original Review: I've been a subscriber for about ten years. I'm about to cancel. While I love the content, and have often described the PD as 'the best local paper I have ever had', I now find I can't get to the content because of the growing number of obstructive - and mindlessly irrelevant - pop-up ads and notifications during a logged-in online session. About three weeks ago, I wrote to complain about this; they stopped briefly, but now they've started again. In my complaint, I urged the PD to give paying subscribers the option to disable pop-ups; why not, if we're paying for access? It would make some sense if I were free-loading, but I'm not, and my patience is just about up. My objective when I come to the paper each day is to read the news, and I'm willing to pay for that. But what's the point of paying for it, then being physically obstructed from accessing it by the very people who are taking my money? The ads in the attached photos are current examples of what I'm talking about. Notice how I can't scroll past them... if I want to read the news article, I have to physically dismiss them. This happens several times a day during logged-in sessions on my phone or my computer, and there is not - and never has been - a single one of these ads that interest me. That's why they should be permanently disabled for people who simply don't want them. This is a 2-star review, because no matter how good your content is, it's useless to me if I cannot access it. I write here in the hope that someone at the PD will read this and quickly take the necessary action. If so, I will come back and upgrade to the 5-star rating I thought you deserved until recently. If not, I will be back here to edit this review and downgrade my rating to 1-star (only because 0-star is not available). Pop-ups are a show-stopper for me. I'm deeply disappointed in how the information was portrayed around the Sweetwater article and the work that was done to dig deeper and understanding a situation that had more layers to it than meet the eye. It is in fact, a reporters job to do that and clearly it wasn't done. I guess with a name like "The Press Democrat" that'd be pretty left leaning, especially in a place like California. Imagine if we had a newspaper in Texas called, "The Media Republican" or something like that. Would anyone trust either one? Seems like you'd have to read them both to get anywhere with the news, or just read the Sacramento Bee altogether. At least their bee agenda at the capital's newspaper doesn't impact my news. This newspaper seems to relish in providing their take on the news, injecting comments and editorialising in the stories about Democrat agenda points. It's like the Fox News of leftist newspapers. The newspapers in small Texas towns aren't even this far-leaning in the opposite direction. The font is pretty and they have all the lotto numbers. I enjoy the photographers' work here. They take some cool shots that aren't typical for many newspapers. I found it offensive that the newspaper seems to disparage Idaho-Americans with a term they call an "Idaho Stop" when riding a bicycle through a stop sign. Naming a group after a crime seems to disparage all Idaho Americans who ride bicycles. They're not all criminals. In fact, a California Stop is what Texans call a rolling stop through an intersection where you depress the brake just enough to illuminate the brake lights so it looks like you're stopped, because this is what Californians do. How's that feel, California? Not so good. The editorials and the vast majority of the letters to the editor seem to agree with Chuck and Nancy and Gov Newsome. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Delivery drivers are great, but the management has gone to crap. I've been a home delivery subscriber for over 10 years. There have been delivery issues from time to time and the company has always been more than happy to credit me a paper when the delivery was missed or whatever. GREAT! More recently that has not been the case. Most recently, I requested a pause on my delivery while I was headed out of town. I initially attempted to request the pause through their subscriber services online in the days leading up to our travel. The website didn't work after trying several times. So then, the next day while I was at the airport waiting for my flight to depart I tried once more - it didn't work again. So then I sent a message to the customer help email address requesting the stop. All of these requests were made within the PD's stated requirements for when I could request a hold (note: for a Sunday delivery, that's before 1:30pm on the Friday before - I tried submitting the request online on the Thursday before, on the Friday morning before, and finally sent an email on Friday morning). They didn't place a hold and refuse to give me a credit for their error. They told me that " a paper was delivered and the hold was not entered on time we cannot charge the carrier for that date. I apologize. I would recommend calling in and speaking to an agent next time you go away." I again explained that I requested the hold with ample time and they refused to budge. Honestly, I subscribed to the physical Sunday delivery paper to support local journalism, but their incredible lack of customer service when dealing with THEIR ERROR has me done with them. read more

I've subscribed for a number of years. Our delivery in Cotati has been 99%. So who's perfect? The articles over the last few years especially have been excellent. Local, national and world news. Emphasis on local. Only a newspaper can give you some of the in-depth stories the Press Democrats report. Radio, television and internet are not going to take the time and effort a newspaper can and does. Their app is great. It's there every morning on my iPad when I get up. It is sad they can no longer print locally because of the sports reporting lags but there are tons of sources for "who won the game". The Press Democrat is the only way to really track what's happening in Sonoma County. And when it's happening. When you support the PD (by subscribing) you support the area you live in. The news stories rarely have any substance to them, as most articles revolve around wineries and restaurants and entertainment in the county. Most of the rest of the stories are pure propaganda, and comments that don't fall in line with strict leftist policy are deleted to such an absurd extent that posters often complain about it within the 'comments' sections. One monitor in particular, who posts as 'Jim M' and pretends to be nothing but a poster, is one of the worst. I don't know if he's real, or if he's a conglomeration of all things woke, but he makes incredibly snide comments and posts childish replies to anyone he disagrees with, which is almost everyone. Then he deletes comments with abandon. I recently replied to him, "You're back again?" Result: delete! I mean, WTH? A week or so ago, I posted that TPTB are planning another full lockdown by December of this year, and he asked me to name TPTB. The result?: Your access to the comments has been temporarily suspended for the following reason(s): Conspiracy theories about COVID: "Pharmaceutical companies, the families that run the central banks (in particular the Rockefellers), Blackrock, the WHO, the CDC, individuals like Bill Gates and Fauci, etc. Just look at who ran it the last time." He also deleted EVERY comment on that article that I'd made. A few days later, I looked at an article on the death of Ann Fraser that I'd commented on weeks ago, about how I met her and Ross at their show decades ago, and how sweet she was to me, and THAT comment was deleted as well. So if you make ONE comment that Jim M doesn't like, everything you've ever posted goes into a black hole. When I saw that, I thought of my mother, who grew up in Germany in the 1930s, and how everyone was watched and censored, and people were afraid to say anything that might even slightly upset the regime. I am a subscriber and a newspaper regular. However, the PD is a constant disappointment. I like to read local news and there is a little. I like national and international news but the little there is mostly from the NYT and I get that online. Analysis, almost none. Arts, reviews and community events, that is what I really want, and in the PD, there is also almost nothing-brief listings one or 2 days/week. Even the short movie reviews on Fridays have been removed to make ads bigger I guess. But sports, argh, the PD gives that 6 or 7 pages EVERY DAY. Please. Sports interests me very minimally. Who do you think your readers are? I want a newspaper, even a small one, to have a range of topics every day--International news, local and California news, arts and calendar, and a tad bit of sports!!!! Yes, the PD is a small time hometown newspaper. The local news reports often are inconsequential, can be poorly written (bad grammar and spelling errors). The national & international news stories are often just feeds from Associated Press, New York Times or the Washington Post. But for all its faults the PD local news reports & op-ed pages do reflect the socio-political leanings of the majority of Sonoma county's left leaning, progressive population. To be fair the op-ed pages do have the syndicated articles of political conservatives Krautheimer & George Will. To the other Yelper's who write reviews full of vitriol about the PD, be aware that there's a much worse quality paper published just to the south of Sonoma county. It's called the Marin Independent Journal (IJ). I lived in San Rafael ten years. After 5 years of subscription to the Marin IJ, I cancelled and avoided reading that poorly written, edited, small minded gossip sheet. The Press-Democrat is a Pulitzer prize winning newspaper in comparison. And a parting thought: who needs to buy a physical newspaper anymore? This is why I have issues with the PD: They are obviously upholding the views of and providing a venue for furthering the agendas of the economic interests in the county (real estate, tourism, wineries). When restaurant reviewers review restaurants they should do their homework. That what professionals do. The reviewer has a professional responsibility to the public to know the facts concerning their subject. Reviewers seldom if ever take the high road and write about their mistakes. I have been a cook/chef in Sonoma County for twenty-five years. The number of quality fine dining and simple eateries has grown to a point unimaginable twenty or twenty-five years ago. Sadly the quality of restaurant "critics" has not Restaurant owners rarely take these "critics" to task. The reason is obvious, economics. They are afraid that if they speak out they will not be reviewed or will face the wrath of these "professionals". This is really an unhealthy atmosphere for culinary truth and growth. The public, in general, looks to these people as experts and professionals. All too often they are not. Who reviews the reviewers? It is time that professionals stand up for their craft. I no longer own a restaurant. My days of working seventy-five hours a week to study and make the best food possible are behind me. These days I am just another cook. My work week now is a leisurely fifty hours. With a bit of extra time on my hands I plan to keep my eyes open. read more

Since print newspaper paid circulation is down the Press Democrat needs to find a way to deliver these inserts for their advertisers. I have driven down to the Press Democrat offices in person and asked them kindly to stop throwing the trash SONOMA COUNTY THIS WEEK on my property. It stopped for a few months then today.......more trash all over the neighborhood. A couple years ago the Press Democrat made the decision to change from a Facebook plug-in to Disqus. They claimed a reason was to integrate the comments into social media. BS. How is Disqus, which just has links to social media accounts, more integrated than using a plug-in from the largest social media network? Commenters could actually post on their own Facebook profile while commenting on the Press Democrat. Users can now tweet or FB post their comments, but nobody does that. Post a link to a Disqus comment? Doesn't happen. The PD also discussed the issue of anonymous commenters being abusive since people are less civil when not using their real name. Before the switch most people used their regular Facebook account with their real name. Now MOST commenters on the Press Democrat website use Disqus accounts that allow them to be anonymous. Yes, PD complained about anonymous users, then invited everyone to comment anonymously using Disqus. As far as I can tell, the only legitimate reason the Press Democrat made the switch is because they are power hungry. The moderators are terrible because they delete perfectly appropriate comments on a whim. So many users announce that they had to re-post their comments because PD staff deleted them. Then PD staff deletes comments users post about their comments being removed for no apparent reason. PD staff even blocks Disqus users from commenting on the PD website for posting appropriate comments that a moderator apparently doesn't like. While post newspapers are struggling to maintain staffing levels, the PD is willing to waste time moderating comments just so they can control comments instead of leaving it to Facebook. PD, your Disqus experiment has failed. Go back to the Facebook plug-in. read more

I've read through the other reviews, and will say that I expected the PD to get an overall 3 or 4 stars on Yelp. Here's my thinking: 1) ++ Local writers provide a lot of the content, and seem to work pretty darned hard to capture interesting stories. Somebody's got to cover County Fairs, local government and a fair amount of sports; and they do it in a professional manner. True, it does seem at times they start with an opinion and the tune will always be the same; but that is also a fact of life with most national and local papers. Everybody has an owner and an editor. 2) - + They can get caught in their "formula" of just rehashing old stories. I could write the local government budget stories by simply changing the dates; and tell you that this city council will get a good story, and the county will get a sucky story. But, they try, and local papers' budgets don't provide enough staff to assign a reporter full time like they used to do. The IJ still has an office in the Marin Civic Center, but Sonoma County hasn't had the Chron and PD desks for quite some time. 3) - - At times, the PD does not seem to listen and respond to readers. Comments via email to the editor about having to "log in" to an account just to read the online comments were just flat ignored. Maybe I should have written to somebody less busy, but did not know where else to go. Why does somebody have to login just to read anothers' comments? The posters are sometimes way out of line, but still howl that some comments (must have been even worse than their "normal") were deleted. 4) + + The outreach for more diversity on the editorial board and inclusion of more cultural happenings throughout the whole county is a huge plus. This only happens with local ownership and jouralists that care. It's a better "paper" for sure (getting over the website sucky thing here). Local sports is getting much better coverage for women and girls events. 5) + + Fresher content is delivered in more "quickie" formats that is sometimes valuable. Keep the pot blog as it's the same old same old over and over; but then the Bite Club is just flat out good and tipping me off to food finds, and the writer knows her stuff. read more

In the middle of election season, I found the main article (with photo) on the "front page" to be a short piece on whether a town in the area should invest in a "pet memorial" for pet lovers whose pets have died. Seriously. To add insult, there was not a single link in the main article section to any politics-related. Except for one. A city council member in another town in the area keyed a car. Seriously? This is news? It gets to keep two stars for the fact that when I am away from my computer or BlackBerry, I can find one and get movie listings. Or do the sudoku. Many glitches in the "letters" section, and no coverage of some of the articles in the print edition. Many times they "forget" to turn on the "comments" feature, and only do so when called on it. I was surprised to happen across Yelp's rating for the PD. I find it a good paper to sit down with in the morning while eating breakfast--just the right size. We used to take the Chronicle, which is a great paper, but we found ourselves spending too much time with it. I notice a lot of people complaining about the online edition. I can't comment on that, as I prefer newsprint. But I also find this site loaded with angry people with their own particular grievances who tear the paper down. I've seen high school papers that were better than this rag. Besides being a poor excuse for a major newspaper, they practice predatory advertising, enforcing non-existent advertising contracts on small businesses. They sue small businesses even when they have no contract, when ZERO advertising was had, knowing full well the small businesses can't afford to fight it. It's fraudulent and predatory. They are bullying small businesses. Personally, I find reviews like Kristian F's on 10/15/2012 unhelpful and deeply offensive. I have been an off again on again subscriber to the PD over the last twenty years. The last 2 months, the quality and relevance of the paper has greatly improved. Finally we have a local, timely rag again where, no offense, the entire front page is no longer taken up by NYT reprints. read more

The PD is the only daily covering Sonoma County and the surrounding counties. It has declined over the years both in size and quality along with the rest of the newspaper industry. I read the website daily, and particularly like the comments section, which is much more civil after requiring logins. Overall the website is sort of a mess and could use streamlining. The recent upgrade to the iPhone app was good. We were getting the paper delivered on the weekends, but after going to New York and reading the NY times, along with the fact that they instituted a paywall, I switched to the Times Sunday edition with online access. If the PD put in a paywall for the website, I would probably pay up to $5/month. read more
