I'm a fan overall. My friend that was with me stated that the food was not as good as it was when she had afternoon tea in Seattle which was disappointing since we were in England after all. But this could be due to the fact that the expectations were high and our palettes are geared towards a US taste. The Tea experience was good and the presentation was definitely fun. TOURIST TRAP!!!!!! I went to the pump room 7 or so years ago and I thought it was delightful. So when family came to visit I thought the ladies in the group would enjoy the experience. The decor was nice and the bread was good. The rest was rubbish. Soggy sandwiches, over cooked lamp, prawns that were drowning in dressing, and other just unimpressive over priced food. Topped that with severs that could care less. I had better service at places to get my oil changed. It was a huge let down and embarrassment to bring my family there. You might have a better meal with some of the other street vendors and other places to eat in the city. Four stars for the location alone. This is why you come: not for the tea, but the fact that you're having tea in the Pump Room. And, if you're daring, try the water. Yes, it tastes like blood, but it's one of those experiences you'll remember forever (as the taste lingers in your mouth...). Service isn't great, prices are high, and the tea is so-so. It's not BAD, but it's not special. Again, you're paying for the gorgeous location and the view of the baths. Not the scones or the Earl Grey. I will go ahead and recommend the Bath bun, though. It's a local specialty. I wasn't crazy about the lump of sugar in the middle, which just fell out onto my plate when I split the bun open, but the bun itself was tasty enough. If you are visiting Bath you should make a trip out here just to say you've been. Taking tea under the statue of Beau Nash is not an experience to be missed. You may even spot a celebrity or two-- I know some folks who ran into Emma Thompson here once. So keep your eyes open. read more

The Pump room is the afternoon high tea place in bath that is located next-door to the popular roman bath. They are connected and you can actually see the roman bath in the windows facing the inside of the building. The pump room is popular with tourists and locals it seems so expect a wait/turned down if you didnt make a reservation. It is very traditional afternoon tea from the layout with the traditional furniture and classical music coming from the string instrument and piano to the food selections such as scones, and tea sandwiches. the place overall though is beautiful. the menu is simple but I recommend getting one of the sets located at the top of the menu. I got the one with smoke salmon whichever one that was lol. It basically comes with a tea of your choice (they give you a tea menu), champagne, your main dish, and your desserts. The food was so-so, I've had better at other high tea places around the world. I gotta say though the ice cream is pretty darn good. Service was so-so because it was slow and my waiter laid out my silverware wrong -_- lol. Overall, I had a good time but I think one time here is good enough for me. If you have never been I def suggest going once. This is a place more for elderly people to go for high tea, but for my generation, we might prefer somewhere in london more. read more

Mediocrity at its best. What a pity that the Pump Room, presumably in business since the 1700's, doesn't really know how to properly serve a good cup of tea. Nice Georgian atmosphere, high prices, ordinary afternoon tea. I've had better pastries from the Supermarket. A better value, without the hype, is the Francis Hotel in Bath. This is the tea room that started it all for me - unfortunately, I am not sure I could find a better place. This is afternoon tea as it should be done. After visiting the enchanting Roman Baths right next door, stopping in at the elegant Pump Room is the perfect way to spend the remainder of an afternoon. Everything here still appears just as it must have been when it opened over 200 years ago: high ceilings, dramatic drapes, enormous windows, classical music. The scones and clotted cream are the best I have had, and though it is pricey, you will not need to eat again until the next day. You can also taste the mineral spa water from the springs, though I can't tell you it tastes good. Bath is so delightful, and the Pump Room is icing on the cake. read more

This place was awesome. We took the tour of the baths, then stopped by the Pump Room for tea and scones. Most of the people there were older, but the atmosphere was nice - especially with the three piece orchestra playing. It gave it a feeling of elegance. Of course I had to try the water from the pump. Actually it wasn't bad. I was expecting nasty sulphur water like The Fountain of Youth in Florida, but really it just tasted like warm water from my great-grandmother's bathroom. read more

We went here for breakfast after arriving on a train from London. I wanted to do afternoon tea, but that wasn't going to work as we had an afternoon tour to Stonehenge and Lacock. I had two fruit scones and some jam and my husband had two warm mature cheddar cheese and chive scones. Both scones were good, but the cheese & chive ones were the best! Husband had a coffee and I had a pump room sunrise. It was refreshing and went perfectly with my scones! Try one with your breakfast. The room was nicely decorated and we even had a live music trio serenading us. It was a lovely experience and I recommend it for a nice start to your day in bath. read more

I have been here twice and I really like the Pump Room for tea. Actually, I don't even drink tea and I still like it. I like the fancy trays of sandwiches and desserts, I like the piano music, and I like the fountain where they hand out that water from the Roman Bath, which is supposed to be a miracle cure from before the age of modern medicine. I drank it once. It didn't cure anything as far as I could tell, and it wasn't the best water I've ever tasted. It was similar, but not as bad, as the water at the forest preserves and state parks. We used to call it "egg water". I think it's sulfur that gives it that odd taste. Even though it is not good water it is served from a very fancy looking fountain. The last time I was here the server was a big strange. Asking about my English heritage and thinking it was hysterically funny my grandfather was from a particular small northern town "Because that's a poor little town and no one ever leaves, HAHAHA! Everyone around there is very pro-UK." Well, obviously, someone did leave. (My impression was always because there was a lack of jobs available at the time, but I guess there aren't that many people interested in "recent" history. ) We were there in the summer and this server seemed very young to me. Kinda touristy, as this is the next stop after the Roman Baths and gift shop. But we were hungry, so this was the ticket. It was time for afternoon tea, but the wait was relatively short. Instead of tea, we opted for a light lunch and drinks. We both had the soup and sandwich . . smoked salmon with dill creme fraiche, plus chips. My wife had the spicy parsnip soup, I had the tomato basil soup. The whole thing was delicious, including a glass of the local ale. The room is elegant, and the pianist in the background was a nice touch. A number of diners around us had the tea service, which looked quite lovely. I have to say that despite this place being a tourist trap the only thing going for this place is the ambiance. The live pianist and classical ensemble were definitely a highlight, as was the room its self with high ceilings and exquisite furnishings. Unfortunately everything else was average I got the impression that the food was not fresh. We ate at 2pm and I could tell that the scones were old. They were very hard which made me think that they were baked early in the morning and had been sitting around all day. Ditto some of the delicacies. We had a mini tart and the crust was soggy when it should have been crispy. One of our petit cakes was also very soggy and stuck to the plate. The sandwiches were alright but even then some of the bread was a little dry on the outside. The service was not exceptional by any means. Our server was very forthright and borderline rude when I asked for some cream to put in my fruit tea. Yes you can put cream in mango tea and it wont curdle. There are many many other places to enjoy tea in Bath. I suggest you try one and stay away from this place. read more

This gorgeous restaurant is part of the Roman Baths, and in the room you can drink some of the spa water (it's an acquired taste!) The food is fine - nothing really special - but the setting is wonderful; it's like a step back in time to Jane Austen's era. I took my parents for lunch and they loved it. Found my way into the Pump Rooms having exited the Roman Baths and was able to get a glass of bath spring water for free included in the price. I've decided hot spring water is not for me! What a great room, you can imagine this place in an Austen story. From what I could tell prices weren't too high but food nothing special either. Being a Jane Austin's ardent fan I had to admit that I fell in love with the place (Bath). My sister made a reservation for a party of 4(thankfully) as there was a decent amount of waittime. I'd recommend reserving esp on a weekend as you r visiting a decently densed touristy area of bath. We were made to sit by the fountain indoor (u can request this) and the waitress was very courtious and cordial to us. We ordered two champagne pump room tea and a traditional pump room tea. It was quick while we were enjoying the live piano music in a huge ballroom like an area that gave us the feeling of having noon tea in a palace. I liked the sandwiches the most. However, what I wish could have been better is the amount of desserts and sandwiches where not balanced and where off a little. Like there were three sandwich bites and 2 scones goat cheese and cucumber and the rest where macaroons tarts and lots more desserts which was a little overwhelming. I was unimpressed. The positive reviews seem to be from people who don't really do afternoon tea as a general rule. If you're going to get a kick out of "holding out your pinky"* wherever you go, you might as well do it here, because it IS a lovely and historically interesting place, but if you've ever had a really excellent tea, this is not going to compare. The scones were COLD, which I've never seen before, though the excellent jams did much to redeem them. (The clotted cream was just normal clotted cream, which is to say it was amazing but you could get the same anywhere.) My tea was over-steeped and almost undrinkable when it arrived at the table, though my friends quite enjoyed theirs, so overall that was fine, I guess. They were oddly stingy with milk-- we had to ask for more twice-- but they brought it eventually. The thing is, I don't pay £17.50 for "fine"! I felt bad for convincing my friends it was worth the money; at most places, it would have been. Service was also slow for us; we planned to take an hour over tea, but had to spend more than two. I had to get up and ask a waiter to take our order after 15 minutes of sitting there with closed menus. But we may have just had unlucky timing. Like I said, if you're liable to enjoy any tea, you'll probably have a fine experience; my friends weren't as disappointed as I was. The live music really IS good, and there's something lovely about having tea at the same place that Jane Austen had tea. But I grew up drinking tea, and I'm not going back. *You should refrain from actually holding out your pinky, because like most restaurants, they use heavy ceramic cups which are easy to drop without pinky support. You can feel the decadence of this place. Walking in the high ceiling and beautiful lighting take your breath away. Then to top it off there's a piano player. We came here while on a tour. We had about 2 hours in Bath and decided that since we had spent so much time walking around and such, we just wanted to relax. The noise level was low, and there was a piano player playing the entire time. It was splendid. We ordered normal afternoon tea with Earl Grey (my choice) and champagne. It was the perfect end to a great day bashing around England. The waitress was so kind and so nice, and told us to come back when we were back in the country (which I think we'll have to!) So I didn't eat here, but I did want to try the Bath water, and the service was horrible. So many waiters passed me by and didn't even stop to ask if I needed anything. Every time I stopped someone, they said "we'll get someone to help you in a moment." Or they would just pawn me off to someone else. And you know where that waiter would go? To the corner to stand around and talk to other waiters who were standing around doing nothing as well. With horrible service like that for something so simple in such a posh place, why the hell would I want to bother eating there? Actually the place LOOKS posh, but it kind of caters to tourists wearing cargo shorts. Oh, and the water? Tasted like a mouth full of dirty, old pennies.
