Hands down the best meal I had in England! Every dish was bursting with fresh, local ingredients, and the flavors were incredible. We showed up about 30 minutes before closing (absolutely starving), and despite the late hour, they graciously accommodated us without making us feel rushed. The appetizer special--local sliced tomatoes with goat cheese, basil, and candied walnuts--was so good I scraped the plate clean. Seriously, we loved every bite! The best meal I have ever enjoyed in England. The beef and lamb were succulent and tender accompanied by vegetables that were fresh and delicious. I could have eaten the dish it was so good and I have to scream out about the potatoes. I am not a big potato eater but these were exceptional and I consumed them like potato chips and could not stop eating until my dish was as clean as new out of the dish washer. I had to slop up the last of the gravy with the Yorkshire pudding. If you are fortunate enough to visit Bath you must make this your first meal because all others will not match. It's usually one of the top places to eat in Bath, and I think for a good reason because the food was fantastic. - Grilled Market Fish Fregola Pasta - Okay the fish was incredible, you can honestly just eat this by itself with any sauces and it would be amazing. It didn't come with pasta, if that word was supposed to be literal, but the fish was humongous if you just ate this dish you would definitely feel full. - Roast Cotswold Chicken Breast - We were stupid and ordered sides because we didn't read it closely and see that there were already sides with this one so don't make the same mistake. Anyways, the chicken was fantastic even for someone who's not the biggest fan of chicken at all. It was a little bit too much like wine for my taste. - Roast Duck Fat Potatoes - Super big fan of the outer parts of the potato. Inside not so much, just basically no flavored mashed potatoes. The outsides were super crispy, almost like chips which were incredible. - Seasonal Vegetables - Not all vegetables are created equal and this place's vegetables are amazing, especially the sweet potato. Excellent fine dining cuisine and atmosphere. We ordered the sea bass, the vegetarian mille-feuille, goat cheese salad, and fish & chips, which were all excellent. Desserts were delicious with unique variations on classics like lemon meringue pie, and then had unique desserts such as chocolate mousse with salted caramel drizzle with sour cherry sorbet, and sticky toffee pudding with honey comb ice cream. Had a quite nice dinner hear for four of us. I had the JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE SOUP with croutons and roasted hazelnuts as a starter. Very good. Since I am vegan, I went with the CRISPY PASTRY DISCS with chargrilled artichokes, squash, aubergine caviar and wild mushroom sauce. I had mixed feelings about this dish. My wife and I were only in Bath for a couple of nights as part of our 30th Anniversary trip...we arrived late into town and had not made dinner plans. My wife had read about Clayton's Kitchen in a travel guide book which can sometimes mean e place ends up being a tourist trap...but nothing could be further from the truth here. I called on a Friday afternoon in hopes of getting a reservation that same evening and mentioned in passing that we were in Bath for Anniversary. The gentlemen was helpful and said he could work us in around 6pm but would need the table back by 7:45 as it was peak holiday season. We were greeted at the door and seated right away. The manager and waitress were very friendly and helpful in suggesting items and answering our questions. We ordered two different salads featuring goats cheese as appetizers and both were OUTSTANDING...very fresh and flavorful with beautiful presentation. My favorited was the fried goat cheese over heirloom tomatoes. Clayton's has an ample wine and cocktail menu with solid choices for many price ranges...a bottle of Spanish red for $25 was available but we opted for a nice St. Emilion Bordeaux for about $65 and weren't sorry we did. Our entrees were served in good timing and very hot from the chef. I enjoyed the aged beef medallions in a wine reduction while my wife had a roasted chicken dish with a really savory jus. Both had a small serving of sautéed spinach but we felt the portions were adequate after salad. The two best surprises were the nice local couple seated next to us and the platter dessert Clayton's served with "Happy Anniversary" scripted in chocolate syrup and a lighted sparkler. The evening was a wonderful way to end a hectic day among new friends. What is it about Bath and its stunning restaurants?! I don't know how many pubs in Britain have peas with risotto but this place has the very best. Lovely restaurant inside and out with friendly service as well. All four of us could not have been happier with our meals and that includes meat eaters and vegetarian epicureans. Someone came and took our drink order right away and brought us our menus. When the waiter came over to take our order, firstly, he made sure to let us know that he has three parties of about 40 people and four other tables waiting for their drinks - odd thing to tell your customer right away?! Anyway, we asked him a few questions about the menu items - how big the portions were, how many eggs come with the dish, how many pancakes- three simple questions. He interrupted us as politely as an "English gentleman" could and told us that he needs to tend to all of the other customers that are waiting...once again, why would you tell your customer that? If you don't have the ability to service all of your customers in a fair and equal manner, then you should prepared for a passive-aggressive Yelp review and no tip (I'm just saying, he is that bad). Food did take about 30 minutes to arrive. We needed help with our Eggs and Soldiers. Our waiter was more than happy to let us know that most people from around here don't order this and we must be Americans. He said that children usually order this dish. Again, why do your customers need to hear that from you? Honestly, I cannot think of one nice thing to say about today's experience at Clayton's, except, maybe, the food was okay and there were real aloe leaves decorating the walls. P.S. We're from NYC, home of the rude and land of the rushed - I can understand a restaurant being busy. I can even grit my teeth while I wait 30+ minutes for my food, but what I can't stand is feeling like I shouldn't have bothered to visit the establishment in the first place. All of this being said, we did the usual NY thing and laughed it off and said we'll give the place a bad review on Yelp. However, this "English gentleman" took his rudeness to another level (which I must describe in detail so that you can make an informed decision about where you will eat in this beautiful city of Bath with plenty of other wonderful places to eat, like Bill's!). So, our waiter had to turn away customers who didn't have reservations because Clayton's policy is that customers must either have a reservation or being staying at the hotel upstairs to be seated (understandable I guess). One customer that he explained this to turned to the person she was with and stated that she saw open tables (which, admittedly, there were plenty of) and the waiter asked her what she said. To which she replied, "nothing, thanks" and walked out. The waiter had the nerve to call her rude while shutting the door behind her! That really bothered me. I mean honestly?! SHE was being rude? I think he's got some sort of complex and was projecting his own inner issues onto that poor woman. I don't care how good the food is, I won't be back. Bath is a wonderful city full of wonderful and friendly people. I will definitely visit all of the other restaurants around here. read more
