I purchased a new machine from The Quilting Bee and had many problems with what I believe was a lemon from a usually great company. Quilting Bee was always helpful, cheerful and concerned about my problem. They had it with their service people twice who tried very hard. Never was anyone other than kind. First, I should say that I was there for an entire hour without being greeted. I love local quilt shops, but please train your staff better. I would have spent money "just because" if the service had been even good. It is a large building, half sewing machines and notions/half fabric. Unfortunately, they didn't have what I was looking for today. I wish their inventory was online. I think if you were walking in with a blank slate, this might be a good shop to consider as long as you don't mind the poor service. If you're traveling through the area as I was, it might be worth a stop just to look. read more

I am not a quilter but I would never buy a sewing machine anywhere but here. I am a novice or intermediate sewist but I really mean this. As in: if I to save up money for an airline ticket because I live somewhere else to fly to the store and test out sewing machines at the store, I would do that. Every single person of the half dozen I've interacted with at the store is knowledgeable beyond belief. They're kind. They grasp that there are some things I know and some things I don't. I bought a used machine here and had a difficult relationship with it. They fixed it no cost and no problems asked. When I still didn't like it a month later I traded it out for another machine again full refund. With no questions asked. I moved into a machine that fit my needs better and I feel great about it and have been sewing on it really well. I have watched the ladies working here walk someone through the various troubleshooting screens on a sewing machine blind, and by memory only via phone from cross country. I really like the overall selection of fabrics at The Quilting Bee. They are arranged in a way that it makes it easier to find what you need to make a quilt. They also have a nice selection of sewing machines, new and used. Now, the reason I only gave them three stars.......their lack of backing fabrics. They only have a few cotton wide fabrics. Why are there more fleece backing fabrics than cotton? Most quilters don't want fleece backing fabric. If I need quilt backing fabric I go to JoAnn's but they mostly offer solids and I don't always want that. Keepsake Quilting (online) has a huge selection of 108" wide fabric so I know they are available. Being that The Quilting Bee IS a quilt shop, they should have a large selection of backing fabric. Another thing they should carry are numbered pins because they come in handy for Bargello quilting. Another thing I noticed is that employees don't offer help (even though I am fine with that but others might want help). It would also be nice to see more sales. If I want a bargain, I will go to JoAnn's. TQB is expensive, IMO. read more

For the size of the shop, I honestly expected to find WAY more fabric in here. The shop is a HUGE barn-like structure...with about half of that being sewing machine retail. The fabric selection was what I call "standard Midwest", meaning most of the fabrics seemed outdated or just average....They do have a very small section of more modern fabrics like Kaffe Fasset and a few pretty prints by Art Gallery fabrics but that's it. Lots of Americana and froufy flower prints. Baby nursery prints. Some flannels. The standard. Definitely loved their batik section, it seemed very well curated and was beautiful, also nice was their section of civil war reproduction prints, but could definitely do without anything Tula Stink. I hate seeing shops over glorify her. Carrying her culturally appropriated, cheesy copycat fabric lines is a big middle finger to ORIGINAL DESIGNERS everywhere who are true artists. More Art Gallery. Stock Tilda fabrics. Bari J. Cotton & Steel. Fresh fabric lines! That would be amazing to find here. Maybe one day. The books/ magazine section is also easily missed because it's pretty non existent. I definitely saw more clothing and handbag patterns than quilt patterns here. So that was disappointing to me personally, but I believe that's the trend in a lot of quilt shops these days. I had been in the shop almost 30 minutes before I was greeted or asked if I needed any help. That being said, The one lady that approached me was very nice and extremely helpful with my questions and help making fabric decisions. She also gave me a class schedule booklet. Again, she was very nice but also the only employee I came in contact with. I only purchased a couple of fat quarters to make the trip worthwhile, the yardage that I saw was seriously a couple dollars or more over the price of other quiltshops that carry the same lines of fabric. It is high-quality fabric, but it did seem very overpriced. The only happy medium between cheap, crappy fabric at Joann's and stores like this is online quilt shops. I really don't think I will make another trip out here, given that I live on the other side of town and didn't find much of anything in here that suited my style. But that's OK. As a business owner and long time seamstress, our experience at The Quilting Bee couldn't have been more perfect! Kathy spent a good hour and a half with us making sure the machine we were wanting to purchase could keep up with our workload and would work well with our specific product. She was super thorough and went out of her way to ensure we had tested all angles of this machine. Above the buying experience, they took the machine out of the box and completely assembled it for us and showed us how to use it, which has never been done for us before when buying machines. Furthermore, they have a SUPER awesome coffee machine that was the perfect touch on a cold, snowy day. We'll definitely be coming back here again and love these awesome ladies! There is once in a lifetime to get a top of the line Sewing Machine as I did for my retirement present! Scott (co-owner) worked so hard to make us happy with a great deal on a Babylock Destiny II. I couldn't be happier...a great price, Love if Knowledge from Babylock along with some other things to sweeten the deal, and private lessons for life. I'm relatively new to sewing, and was visiting family in the area. The staff made me feel very welcome and had a wealth of knowledge about the vast number of machines they carry. I was like a kid in a candy store! They carry all the fabric you would ever need! If you're a sewist and in the area it's a must see. I was excited to see a quilt shop in Spokane so headed over to The Quilting Bee. It is a beautiful quilt shop with so many completed quilts and sewing projects on the walls to stimulate your creativity. They have a large selection of fabric choices to chose from. I live locally...I've been to all the local quilt shops many times..... I now live much closer to the Bee so it is the shop I frequent the most.... First off I purchased an older Bernina 1080 from them and walked away thrilled... The assistance was excellent, not to mention the machine.... I already had a Babylock serger and once they acquired the retail of that brand, I was given the excellent assistance on my serger from them.....I have taken numerous classes and purchased fabric as well.... I made the leap to purchase the Bernina 740 new from them and am so happy I did.....Half the equation in purchasing a new machine is the machine itself and the other half is the retailer and how helpful they are in assisting in the learning curve, service and customer care.....I feel I got the best.... They are a very well staffed store and it is always busy when I go there....If you have a question, you will likely have to find someone to ask but there is plenty of personnel to get to...I would love to see more contemporary fabrics and notions... I am an artist, not a quilter.... But I find overall, their store has the best service, best machines around, Bernina, Babylock and Janome... Who can deny that? read more

I have been sewing for 46 of my 58 years, so I'm not inexperienced. I purchased a $10,000 Bernina 880 from The Quilting Bee in Spokane Valley, WA. That doesn't include the additional hundreds spent on additional items. When they are promoting the Bernina 880 you hear about the great warranty that it comes with, the amazing things you can do with it, on & on. In the past year that I have had this machine, it has gone down 6 times, 4 of those times I couldn't figure out how to problem solve with the manual or YouTube, so that would require lugging it to the store. It's always some stupid little thing like a thread caught somewhere that you can't see, or a spring (that's as fine as a hair) broke, there is lint built up (no one showed or told me how to clean it until this happened), you have to oil it (I was told 4 different intervals to go by for "how often you should oil it"), or some other little thing. "They're Diva's" I was told more times than I care to hear. Then when you need the warranty that is so GREAT.....it doesn't cover much of anything. $$$. Had I been told what Diva's these machines are, I would have bought a BabyLock. There are so many little quirks you have to be careful of that you're not instructed on, which plate to use with which needle, etc. You need to pay to attend several classes by Bernina to learn enough about the machine, and still there is more you must learn. I have literally spent hours upon hours that turn into days upon days reading the manual, watching YouTube videos, Bernina videos, learning so much, but still it's not enough. When the Bernina 880 works I LOVE IT, but I think that perhaps I got a lemon, but that's apparently my tough luck. I have a 35 year old Viking that has never broken down, but it doesn't have all the abilities the Bernina offers and I wanted to embroider clothing for my grandchildren and other projects. I was sold a Binder Attachment and the required presser foot $295.15, with a 20% discount since I bought it the day I bought the machine. I have never used it, so I brought it in to the store (in the original box, obviously unused, with the paperwork/instructions, presser foot still in the original case obviously unused, the price sticker is still on the item and without any blemish) and asked if I could put the purchase price towards a store credit, so I could buy things that I would actually use. "No, sorry, we have a 15 day return policy." Did I mention I am from Montana? It's a 3 hour drive to the store. My sister-in-law treated me to attend a class with her at the Quilting Bee and that is when I purchased the machine. It was touted as so dependable, was I a fool. I am in the market for a long arm quilting machine on a 10 to 12 foot stand. It will not be a Bernina, nor will it be purchased from The Quilting Bee. read more
