My boyfriend surprised me for my birthday by taking us to Sonoma for the weekend. The highlight was waking up Sunday morning for a horseback ride with one of the most beautiful views. Our guide was wonderful and friendly, the horses were absolute gems, and overall this is one of the best trail ride experiences I've ever had. Getting the mountains, water, and some redwoods was fantastic! We were fortunate to be in a small group (us and two others). It made the ride feel more intimate. I rode El Negro and highly recommend. His gait is smooth! (He is a walking horse after all). My boyfriend rode Leslie who was a bit slow and liked to trail at the back but sure footed and a sweetheart. We ended the ride with a glass of wine overlooking the lake. This space is often use for weddings as well and I can absolutely see the appeal! I would love to go back some day!! read more

Great trail with beautiful horses and an amazing guide. We had Emma, who was wonderful throughout the entire ride. There are some cliff ledges, which can be tough for people who don't like heights. Also, I recommend you wear pants as you'll brush across bushes and trees. Lastly, my only gripe would be if you wear a helmet, I don't think they're sanitized. You can choose to opt out of the helmet, but you should if you're not comfortable riding. read more

What a great way to connect with nature in the area. We always just focused on wine tours when visiting Healdsburg, but this time opted for something different. The horseback riding tour of the trails surrounding Lake Sonoma were fantastic! Nikki did such a great job with everything. Her knowledge of the area, horses and the history really added another layer to the whole experience. Her insight of certain trails, past inhabitants, what the horses liked, disliked, was excellent. We will go back and do the trail again on our next visit to the area. We won a "Romantic Horse Back Experience" at the Santa Rosa wedding expo but never actually ended up taking the ride. I wanted to wait and use it closer to our actual wedding in September, but after many cancellations and back and forth with scheduling, I just gave up ever going. They cancelled on us multiple times at the very last minute and just had bad customer service all around. They made us feel like they didn't care about us because we won the prize and technically aren't paying customers. Just sucks because I probably would have had a good time and wanted to go back and bring my friends and family. We had our wedding here and would highly recommend Nikki, her husband and ranch for a stunning Sonoma county venue! They were more than accommodating and the space was perfect ambiance for our rustic western wedding. The view of the lake at sunset is a must for photos and the white benches with cowhide made for great posing places! The venue includes an adorable bridal ready area and was very comfortable despite being an operational ranch. We had Lombardis cater the food and would also recommend them for ease of service, they knew exactly what to do for set up and made it the easiest part of the entire event. What a Sunday! We explored Lake Sonoma on a horse. We had such an amazing time thanks to Nikki and her family. It was about an hour drive from us. There's plenty of parking. They have this cute little picnic area as soon as you enter and an awesome view of the lake. They also serve wine. We chose the Skaggs Vista View. It's a bit of a rocky trail full of inclines and downhills. At the peek of your ride, they'll give you a moment to stop and take pictures of the view. It took us about an hour to go around the loop. FYI: Quincy was such a fun horse. He definitely loved the inclines. Amigo is perfect for the kiddos. Magnum was such a tall and handsome horse! Fantastic Horseback Riding at the RANCH! Cameron was a great guide. We did the Adventure ride: 3 areas: AMAZING Views! I rode Leslie a sweet Mule Horse...I have to say Leslie is inclined to munch/eat every few steps...and increasingly as ride went along... and she required much reining in...constantly pulling up the reins...so very often...not much fun. Chase was a cool horse. Apparently Ranch has 18 horses. So when we ride again, I won't be riding Leslie. Still, I highly recommend riding at the Ranch. read more

We had a wonderful experience from start to finish with The Ranch at Lake Sonoma. I booked 8 people for a ride to celebrate my daughters 20th birthday. She wanted a fun but corona-safe way to gather with her friends. Booking was easy and follow up communications timely. The horses were all in good shape, well cared for and seemed very happy. The equipment (saddles & bridles) were clean, oiled and in good repair. Horses were matched appropriately to riders experience levels and physical needs. Several of us are more experienced riders, a couple were somewhat experienced and three were beginners. Everyone enjoyed the ride and all were still smiling when done. We did the Wine Country private ride. It was the highlight of our trip! The owners and staff are incredibly kind and knowledgeable. The countryside was absolutely gorgeous with amazing views of Lake Sonoma and the Dry Creek Valley. The owners obviously have a deep love for what they do and for their horses. They make sure the horses live their best lives. Our horses were very friendly, happy, and experienced. This was an excellent spot to experience our first horseback ride. My husband booked us on a ride for a Sunday in June- to celebrate my birthday. It was a really amazing experience! The weather was perfect, and the horses (I rode with Quincy and my husband with Tucker) were ever so kind and so so fun to ride. They quickly galloped up the hills and gracefully walked down. The exact opposite of what most 2-legged creatures do! haha... Our ride guide, Nikki, shared a breath of knowledge about the area we were riding around, the horses we were riding on, and her own experience riding horses for the majority of her life. We discovered this place during a miserable, hot weekend at Lake Sonoma this last July. We had three children in tow and the temperatures were around 106 degrees F. When we came by, the owners were by the gate and they let us know that they had horseback riding. We came back the next day and the children had a chance to ride the donkeys around the arena. The owners provided us with lots of bottled water and sunscreen. (if it's really hot and somebody offers you water and sunscreen do take it). The children had a wonderful time getting to know the donkeys and exploring the area. The owners were kind, and helpful and very knowledgeable. Our daughter loves animals, so they let her feed and groom the donkeys after the ride. Next time we visit Lake Sonoma, we are going to book some horseback rides at The Ranch. read more

We had an amazing experience with The Ranch at Lake Sonoma! Nikki and David were so friendly, and the horses were patient and gentle. The barn is set atop a hill with gorgeous views of the lake. It made for an enjoyable 1.5 hour trail ride above Dry Creek vineyards, through tree groves, and along the edge of lupine-lined hills. Tucked amongst the oak-spotted, golden hills of northern Sonoma County lies a rugged land of recreation, Lake Sonoma. Being huge fans of kayaking, hiking, swimming, camping & disc golf on the lake I had this horseback adventure on my radar for some years now. So glad we took the opportunity to try it and I highly suggest visiting the Ranch, not just for tourists but all you locals too. Run by a local couple with their two kids, the Ranch at Lake Sonoma is located above the marina overlooking the rockpile road bridge. Nikki, who has been riding since she was a child was very friendly, knowledgeable and made us all feel so comfortable on our horses! This was the first trail ride for my 11 year old son and Nikki kept him close, kept in conversation with him and brought us on the appropriate trail for his skill level. I especially love the views and horse facts we heard along the way. Next time we will sign up for a longer tour, our legs were sore but one hour is just not enough!! I was in town visiting and wanted to find a horse ride to go on and I'm so glad I found this place. I was able to get a 2 hour ride in which wasn't easy to find one that long. It was so scenic. I'm pretty new to horses but had zero issues and didn't feel it was above my skill level. The view was amazing. The horses were fabulous. I had Romy and I loved him. My favorite horse I've ridden. It's run by a lovely husband and wife with their two kids.
