Wright's Beach Campground - November 10, 2025 - Sunset. - Campgrounds Near Me - Bodega Bay, California

We tent camped at Wright's Beach for two nights in late May. The high temperatures were around 60 degrees; the low temperatures were around 50 degrees. The ground was so hard in our campsite that we were unable to stake our tent and just left it unstaked. For tent camping, you must use your rainfly because everything gets wet at night. At night, pack as much back into you car as you can to keep it dry. If you can't do that, then put things under the picnic table to keep off some of the water, fold up your camp chairs so the seats don't get as wet, and cover stuff with tarps if you can. There is a camp host selling firewood ($13/bundle or two bundles for $25) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are lots of birds trying to get at your food. In the morning our vinyl tablecloth was wet and covered with muddy bird footprints. The bathrooms are the best I've seen at any campground. Individual bathrooms/stalls, fully stocked with seat liners and toilet paper (and hot water!), but no soap or towels to dry your hands. All in all, it was a fun and different camping trip. You are steps from the ocean. But, for tent campers, be prepared for cold and wet. read more

This is listed as a campground, and it is by all specifics, but for us.... we had just traveled there for the day as a beach to watch the sunset. My girlfriend and I were looking for a quiet, serene, not as heavily traveled or crowded beach to soak our toes and spend some quality time together and this was the perfect setting for that! The views are amazing. You don't have to walk for miles and climb down some jagged hill. It's a nice pleasant trail out to the water, easy parking access and clean restroom facilities nearby if needed. I can't wait to return here for some more -- Vitamin Sea! read more

Wright's Beach State Park, Sonoma, CA - July 25,, 2024 Wright's Beach used to be a well kept secret. You could show up just about anytime in the middle of the week and find a nice camp spot right next to the ocean. Not anymore. Expect to make your reservation 6 months out and pray that someone else on their computer doesn't beat you to it. It's truly a challenge these days to get a spot. But, if you do get a spot, you are in for a treat. There are about 25 camp spots, about 8 with direct ocean access. The other spots are nice too, albeit some are on top of each other. Most ocean sites have good sized bushes between sites to provide for some privacy and protection from the wind. All sites have a picnic table, fire pit and food locker. Many sites are of sufficient size to hold a small to medium sized RV. There are no hookups. They don't have a dump station, but you can take your RV to Bodega Bay State Park about 5 miles down the road and use theirs for no charge. There is overflow parking and Day Use parking, and the Day Use area also has some picnic tables. They have nice bathrooms with running water and flush toilets that are cleaned daily. They sell firewood that must be burned in the fire ring. No camp fires on the beach. read more

Bravo-Dog friendly beach! This beach offers the largest sandy beach between Bodega Bay and the Russian River. It is a breathtaking beach set against rugged coastlines: views for miles. We love it because it offers something for every beach lover: beautiful sandy beach, secluded coves, rocky crags, hiking trails, and sheer cliffs that hug the edge of the sea. This beach is not crowded and hosts plenty of parking. Note parking is right next to the beach; few steps away. Perk:Wright's Beach is a great day destination but it also offers overnight use with 25+ ocean-front camping spots. read more

Wright's Beach Campground is one of the busiest and very hard to get reservations campgrounds. Very beautiful location. It is on the beach in front of the Pacific Ocean. This is one of the biggest favorite camping spots in Northern California. The campground is not very big, so it is fully booked for the entire season as soon as the campground release for reservations. But they do have a few spots available for first come first serve. But those spots are not on the beach. Another good or bad thing about the campground is your cellular phone will not work if you're using AT&T or T-Mobile networks. The Verizon network is also hit and miss. No one can get hold of you! I don't know you think this is a good or bad thing! Lol! read more

One of the best spots for coastal camping in Northern California. The Sonoma coat is beautiful and this small campground is right on the beach. The water is too treacherous for swimming but chilling on the beach or taking a walk along the coast here is always amazing. The amenities are nice and the camp hosts were plenty friendly. This is a place to be visited frequently and the intent is to return soon. The pictures on this review will speak more to the beauty than my words could ever express. read more

Love this place. Camping right off the beach, super nice area, good sites, lots of wildlife. There was a fox just across the dirt road watching us (makes me nervous these critters so close to roads and highway 1 just up the hill there). You're right by the beach which is really nice, going from your campsite to the ocean five minutes away. You get that mix of trees, campfire and sea air at night. Super nice place to camp Only problem is it gets book up early and fast so you have to basically get in a the right time which can be a crapshoot. Otherwise, lovely place to camp. read more

There's a reason why Wright's Beach is one of the most sought-after campgrounds in the Sonoma Coast. It's a beach front campground, and if you're able to snag a premium spot, you can see the expansive beach with stunning ocean views. It's also dog-friendly, so you can totally bring your furry pals and enjoy the day lounging around under the sun. Just don't go swimming due to the strong rip tides and thunderous waves. I was able to book camp site #4. It's a bit smaller compared to the other premium sites, but it's more secluded and private thanks to the trees and foliage. Each camp site has a picnic table, fire ring, and a secured cabinet to store your food. Before going to sleep, I recommend double checking for any food scraps around your site and throwing away bags full of garbage. If you have any opened bags, make sure to store it in the cabinet or in your car. My boyfriend left his kitchen bag out on the open (the contents being an open bag of pancake mix, some chips, and more) and the next morning, our picnic table was total chaos! The bathrooms were super clean and the staff made sure to stock up on toilet paper. The only downside was no showers, but staff told us that registered campers can use the coin-operated showers at the Bodega Dunes campground. We really enjoyed exploring the campground and surrounding areas! I'd love to come back again next summer/fall! read more

Loved this place so much, we've returned reserving lot 15. It is not much of a personal preference as opposed to lot 7; however, it offers a different flavor. For parties that plan to camp adjacent from each other, it works. On the other hand, if you love your privacy you will not get much on this lot. Luckily for us, we had respectful neighbors and it was not a problem. This lot did not have direct beach access; however, taking that extra steps to the beach wasn't bad. For those with solar panels, we've found the need to use our generator. Tree branches just made it impossible to get a good charge on our batteries. Don't be surprised finding me here again! Beautiful beach. I have never been camping here but I went here for a little bit of TLC and to take some pictures. Its exceptionally beautiful how big and open it is to explore. I definitely will be back here for camping! I really love how dog friendly this beach is. I would recommend to bring beach friendly flip flops or sandle shoes as the pebbles are rather large and it is difficult to walk in barefoot. Bring a jacket just in case for wind! Perfect for walking, running, exploring ~ lots of different things to explore here! I would also be conscious that this is not a swimming beach as it has an extreme rip current. It is something that makes the waves crashing upon the shore so exceptionally beautiful!!!! Take caution and do be careful with your doggies if yours loves to swim as mine does :) Definitely visit this beach though, it is one of a kind! read more

I usually come here for day use. Last weekend we camped! Yay, our first ocean camping experience! Was absolutely relaxing!! Restrooms are cleaned and restocked daily. I had no problem booking online, and no problem checking in. Check-in time is 2pm. Check-out time is 12 noon. No bonfires allowed. They have critter boxes for you to lock up your food. YOU NEED TO PUT YOUR FOOD & COOLER AWAY EVERY NIGHT! Raccoons will absolutely get into your food bins/totes and coolers if not put away. You'll need a lock to lock critter boxes. Raccoons are smarter than you think! This beach is not for swimming or wading. Very strong currents. No lifeguards on beach. Perfect beach to watch and listen to waves and fly kites! read more

I love this beautiful campground and only wish our stay had been longer. We were driving up the coast after our road trip through Arizona and needed a place to stay. We were car camping for most of our trip and didn't have an issue finding a spot until on highway 1(not surprising we knew ahead here is not roadside camping) so we were pointed in the direction of this beach. It was near 10pm when we showed up, make reservations for this place they fill up months in advance! When we woke up it felt like a movie it was perfectly fogging and salty air, it was a little chilly but not too windy. A beach this nice is not so easily accessible on this part of highway 1 and we will be back here. One thing to note is dogs aren't allowed on the sand but are allowed in campgrounds. This is beach camping at its absolute best. There's a thousand reasons why this is one of the most coveted campgrounds for miles, and many of those can only be experienced firsthand, so I'll just give some abbreviated and hopefully useful insight based on my experience. First off, there are numerous sites up and down the coast and many of them are just as extraordinary in terms of natural beauty. I like that the spaces here are clearly partitioned with bushes, and private, yet totally open to the huge, expansive and absolutely beautiful beach. Each campground comes with a metal fire pit and picnic table and most have boxes to store food at night. We had one of the smaller camp sites and still manages to fit three tents and three cars. The sunset and views up and down the coast were second to none. The beach was mostly empty and made for great long walks, shell hunting and morning runs. That last thing never happened. We did have an issue with the RV next to us running its generator past the 8 pm curfew. I had to go over and tell them to shut it off as it was the loudest generator there and just feet from our tents. There isn't anyone around to enforce such things, which would be my only legitimate criticism of the place. Now, a couple words of caution. 1) RACOONS! On night one, we made the mistake of leaving just the possibility of food open to these critters. As soon as we retired to our tents we heard them swarm and they were everywhere - crawling on the table, opening our cooler. It was easy to scare them off with sticks. We learned our lesson and locked everything down the second night. That night there wasn't a peep. 2) ROUGH waves. This is not a place to swim under any circumstances. The beach is steep down where the waves break. If the crashing of massive waves indicating strong undertow isn't enough to keep you away, best of luck. 3) The booking system. It's done through the state parks website and like everything that has to do with the state and technology, it sucks. It's a convoluted system that never seems to work right and is overly complicated. Do your research on how to use it and how far in advance to book. Honestly, if you're not rating this place 5 stars because of some one-off occurrence or the website or an experience with another camper who no one else will ever meet, more space for us. For me, it's easy to see why Wright's Beach books up faster than a Rolling Stones reunion tour. read more

Don't go to Wright's Beach. It's awful! I've been twice. The first time I stayed at site #3, the second time at site #4. The calming ocean waves in the background never stopped. There was sand everywhere. At night all there was to do was hangout on the beach and look up at the stars. It took a whole ten minutes to drive to some decent food and coffee. The bathrooms were only cleaned once a day and the faucets in there weren't even touchless. On our hike all we got were gorgeous views of the coastline. You won't like it. Trust me. read more

I have one complaint - no showers. They offer showers at Bodega Dunes for you to use, but its not close enough to be convenient. However, the rest of the campground is so great that I don't even care. The campground is small and the spaces are tiny but I barely noticed because OMG - THE VIEW! The wild, roaring ocean is right there at your door (tent?) step. This is a family oriented place, so there were lots of kids (my 4 included). It was peaceful, though. No rowdy parties, just the ocean. Some tips: * don't come thinking that you're going to play in the water. It is crazy and dangerous and there are lots of signs reminding you to keep out. * sites 1-10 have the direct ocean views. Site 1 is closest to the bathrooms and they sites get progressively further away *the sites are mostly paved with some sand. Make sure you can pitch your tent in the sand if you're not in a trailer. *BYOToilet paper *Site 4's ocean view is mostly obscured by bushes. *Sites 9-11 are in a cool little cul-de-sac that would be awesome for a group. * Bring sand toys and a kite! * The nights are COLD! I did not pack enough blankets! * If you forgot to bring coffee (D'oh!), this is the closest coffee shop. Camping in CA is no joke. There are dozens of different spots within a few hours drive of the Bay Area, whether you want mountains and rivers or beaches and sand. One downside though is that a love of Californians know this and spots can be hard to come by. In anticipation of this, we booked our site at Wright's Beach back in January for the July 4th weekend. Good thing we did, as surely enough, the place was filled for the holiday. It's a pretty good spot and I'm glad we made the reservations. There are some downsides, for sure. The clientele trends more towards the RV crowd and to call this camping is a bit of a stretch - I mean, I could hear people watching movies nearby. Catering to this crowd is a lot of pavement; we were fortunate to have two sites as one of ours had no place to stake down a tent. On the upside, there are bathrooms and running water, so the less rugged of your crowd will have a place to freshen up. Beware, though - many had trouble locking the doors and reports of restroom walkins were many. Not what you want when you've clambered out of your tent in the morning to flush out last night's Tecates. I would also note that this place was a little difficult to find in the evening fog, but that probably only matters about 250 nights out of the year. The upside to this whole spot is the ocean - less than 100 yards from the furthest campground. It's one of the most deadly beaches in California, with more than 200 victims of its nasty riptides since 1950, but they do a good job of warning you not to go in. One of our party, either at peace with her Lord or her bottle, tested the waters anyway and confirmed that it is in fact quite dangerous. But its great for the proverbial walk on the beach or to bury your friend's five year old in the sand. Hope he got out okay. Lower-numbered campgrounds are right on the beach whereas the ones in the teens and 20s are further away - it's hard to tell that from the booking site. And I don't know how far in advance you need to reserve, but since it's only 60-75 miles from SF I figure it's a pretty heavily frequented spot. If you're looking for a real outdoor adventure this probably isn't your scene, but for car camping with large groups and/or special needs, this is probably aces. read more

I love this beach and campground! Campsites 1-10 are right on the beach. (Well right before the sand) the campsites are pretty spacious and private. The bathrooms are kept clean. They do not have showers. However, you can drive up the road and shower at Bodega Dunes campgrounds which was no big deal for us. We had campsite 9. Beautiful. (See pics) we have now booked campsite 10 for our next trip. We are so excited! Can't wait! To get in is $8, but my friends and I decided to park on top and walk down. The view from the top was amazing! The endless sea and the sands. Arriving at the beach, you can see the campers setting up, making food, etc. It seemed really crowded and the neighbors were right next door; not a lot of privacy. The restrooms were very clean and there were enough restrooms for people, so there were no waits. Moving on. The beach is gorgeous. The first thing you want to do is touch the freezing cold water with your feet. That's exactly what my friends and I did, after walking through a bunch of gravel and finally the sand. We brought a frisbee and wanted to play ultimate frisbee, but it was a bit crowded in the area we were in. We ended up walking down the beach to another part of the beach where there were no one around. After playing, we walked over to large rocks and found a bunch of mussels and starfish on them! What a great site. We left the beach with a ton of great memories. Overall, I would definitely come back here, if we're willing to drive a few hours up. read more

We camped here last weekend and we had a great time! The grounds are clean, the restrooms are really close and are also fairly clean. Our site(7), was right on the beach and the view was spectacular! It was wonderful falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean so close by. Our two kids both loved running up and down the beach and dipping toes in(they were a little bummed it couldn't be more than that since it is a dangerous undertow ). But they had fun looking for shells, rolling down sand dunes and a little bit of tidepooling. We only stayed one night, maybe next time we'll stay a little longer. My only tiny complaint is that based on some reviews here and elsewhere, we were under the impression that the campgrounds themselves were slightly more sandy then it actually was.... so next time I think we'll bring a foam mattress or something. Ah well that's roughin it for ya lol. ;-) read more

This is my first time camping since I was a young child. The view alone is breathtaking and the ranger at the welcome box was really nice. My friends and I had camp ground three right next to the beach. Camp was set up and we went to walk the beach the water can go high and the waves are just so deep and beautiful. The sunset was great everyone around was friendly. It's also a dog friendly site as well. I would definitely go back once more too see the beaches. read more

We went to the beach a few weeks ago during COVID and it was beautiful! People were socially distanced and we loved that it was a nice sandy beach with ample space. Maybe fewer than others neighboring beaches due to the park fee. Luckily we found parking in the lot. After leaving the beach, we went to the campground bathrooms which were quite clean. We decided to take a last minute trip after checking availability and seeing the campground was quite booked in months to come, think we still got lucky, scoring a ocean front site! (Plan ahead!) The sites on beach are booked months in advance! But if you're lucky to stay here, it's such an amazing place! There's not many campgrounds where you can camp in the sand, with nothing between you and the ocean, you really are camping on the beach here! And it's pretty sweet! Like others have said, there's a handful of sites on the beach but no matter where you are the ocean is not far! We had no issues booking, arriving and checking-in. We camped in late February and arrived on a windy day, it calmed down in the evening and the following day wasn't too bad but be prepared for wind and varying degrees of weather - it gets cold! There are water spigots around and (nice & clean!) bathrooms, no showers. Easy beach access and so much to explore here, great beach!.. But dangerous, not a beach to go swimming, there are warnings everywhere! It's one of the deadliest beaches in California in fact. Each campsite has a fire pit, picnic table and food bin. The food bin at our site didn't actually latch shut and only closed tightly. We thought we were ok but those damn raccoons got in! Maybe bring a lock, wire or something to secure shut! We were excited to find out a trail head for the Kortum Trail is here, which is a great hike! Approx. 4 miles along the beach! No dogs on trail. The Sonoma coast is pretty spectacular and Wright's Beach Campground is a prime location for exploring it. As other reviewers have said, sites #1-#10 are beachfront sites and are understandably the most popular. Site #10 probably gets my vote for the top spot because it's the most private and also offers decent protection from the wind. We spent a very windy night there and were thankful for the trees. Keep in mind sites #1 - #10 are $45/night (in 2016), a $10 premium over the other sites. While par for the course in California, I think $35 (let alone $45) is unreasonably high and undoubtedly prices many people out. With that said, when we return I'm not sure I'd go out of my way for a beachfront site. Instead, I'd focus on avoiding sites #13-#18 because they have virtually no privacy. (Note that the location of site #18 has moved at some point; it used to be where the camp host site is now. Another reviewer recommended #18 but I suspect that was before it moved.) I thought the upper loop (#19-#27) was actually pretty nice and really, even though you're not right on the beach, it's a 30 second walk away. The night before we stayed at site #10 we stayed at #19, which is next to the camp host site. As I mentioned it was very windy, and partially because it's better protected I think we enjoyed them both about equally. In short, all of the sites here provide unbelievable access to a great stretch of coast. Some provide a little (but not much) more space than others, so I wouldn't fret too much about getting the perfect site. read more

This is a great place if you want to camp on the beach ......awesome ocean view....campsites 1-8 are all good ....but the best are 6,7,8.....we stayed @ campsite 7. It was worth $45.....The weather was not bad. Stayed there on April 23. It rained at night. Plan on returning in the summer. read more

PROS Beautiful setting on the beach for many sites and just yards away for other sites, but so very close to the beach no matter which site you're in. Sites 1 through 10 are on the beach with unobstructed views of the ocean. Very clean, modern and convenient bathrooms with electrical outlets but no showers anywhere. Fresh water spigots available. Close to a walking trail to sunset boulders. No internet and no cell phone service (yes this is a PRO!) unless you go up the hill where Verizon's service is ok, and ATT's is basically nonexistent. Very quiet, except .... see below CONS No hookups of any kind. No mention anywhere (website, check-in, reservations) of the quiet hours much less that they run from 8pm to a ridiculously late 10am. So no generator means you'll wake up in a cold, damp camper with a cold breakfast and no coffee unless you have a kettle or percolator to heat water on your propane stove, or use the bathrooms to brew a pot. Bring a propane heater?? Camp host is super friendly and helpful, but flies a kite all day and night that sounds like 2 paper bags slapping and flapping in the wind. What about those quiet hours?? Bring ear plugs. Reservations need to be made weeks in advance because it's so popular. I'll go back for sure, but now I know I'll have to rely almost exclusively on propane power and not electricity. read more

Beautiful site and so close to beach! We were in site 18, which didn't look straight out on ocean but did have enough overhead foliage to protect us from occasional drizzle. Sites on inner side of loop (not looking out on ocean) are very close together. Beach front sites more private but no overhead protection. I would definitely consider staying here again but I would go into it better prepared for no showers and minimal cell network. read more

Don't come if you don't want sand in your shoes, dew on your tent, or can't sleep to the sound of crashing waves! I've been here twice - make sure to get sites 1-10. They're the premium sites, as they face the beach. The others will be facing you and marvel at your view. First time, camped at site 10. Your car will have to drive onto a little sand, but not a big deal. The trees surrounding the campsites block the wind, so sand isn't going everywhere, unless it's storming out. Beach is fantastic, nice soft sand, not many people. Lots of signs for sneaker waves and the dropoff is severe, so if one of those catches you or your pet, that may be the end. read more

This is a great camping location right on the beach. It has nice camping sites amongst close trees right along the beach, so one can simply walk right onto the beach and hear the ocean at the campsite. Bathrooms are nice and clean, but there are no showers. read more

Love this place! It's right on the beach and even has really clean bathroom. It has a huge beach that allows dogs. We saw dolphins, starfish, crabs, seals, and even a red fox. Our site was nice a private. I'm already looking the book my next trip. read more
