Haven't ate a chicken fried steak in about 5 years cause they are too greasy. A little voice kept telling me to get the Zane CF steak. Glad I did! It was great; right size, not GREASY. Be aware that they don't serve dinner on Saturdays (unless you're an early bird). The lighted sign on the front door, as well as the Yelp listing, says they're open till 7. But when we arrived just before 6, the woman at the door rather peremptorily said they were closing at 6 "because I have a bar to run." I'm not sure why they don't change the sign if that's the case, but we ended up having a lovely (and less expensive) BbQ dinner at The Sighting instead. read more

Food is wonderful. The owner is hateful. She has a very bad attitude towards her customers. Few years ago we would always stop to eat there and they had a sweet Mexican waitress that really was liked by everyone. Food can be wonderful but if you have bad atmosphere to eat in it not worth it. Also my friend said they won't go back because she charged them a ridiculous price for their meal. read more

The second we walked in the lady at the front had a awful attitude. She ignored us for a good 10 minutes and was getting mad we had kids at our booth when she sat us at the booth. We then asked for our food togo because we were that uncomfortable she threatened to call the cops because she wasn't getting a tip. We were excited to support a local business on a very long drive. The second we walk in the host was extremely rude and ignored my kids and I for 15 minutes. She sat us at a cowhide booth and then gets mad when my two year old is drinking her drink out of a bottle when that's what she gave them. My wife and I were beyond uncomfortable we asked for our food to go. She then threatened to call the cops because somehow our bill was 2X the menu prices and we asked to cancel our order after being told we couldn't sit at the booth and wait for our order to go we had to stand at the front desk. We were there for a good 20-25 minutes and says the food is already cooking that we need to pay the bill when we hadn't seen any food or anything. It is very obvious the HOST/ OWNER TIFFANY has a disgusting attitude towards children given previous reviews. Skip this place at all cost. Disgusting behavior. Even reading reviews of 4+ stars talking about her awful attitude. read more

In the middle of a long drive through this beautiful, sun bleached stretch of Texas, my son and I happened upon The Ranch House. Starving and with not much more than a sliver of hope to fill our bellies, we stumbled upon The Ranch House. It was an easy choice since it was the only establishment in town. I ordered the chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy and my son had a plain burger. To our great delight, it was one of the best meals we had in Texas. The chicken fried steak was the best I've had, cooked perfectly, with a crispy coating. And the creamy, spicy gravy was the perfect pairing. My son, who is extremely picky, was delighted with his burger and couldn't stop raving about it. On top of that, the owner was extremely nice and it was the perfect place to stop and get refilled. I wish we could visit again, but as a realist, I know that it's highly unlikely. However, please stop by and enjoy it as much as we did. read more

Though the service was initially like "you're not from around here" the co-owner loosened up with my wife's persistent pleasantness. We're from NC and spent the last three weeks traveling around AZ,NM, and TX. The food at the Ranch House was better than most anything we came across elsewhere. A little taken back by the female co-owner wearing a side arm, but I think that's just Texas and I should get over it. read more

My husband and I stopped at The Ranch House on our way to Big Bend. Our experience was interesting to say the least. After being seated, a father and his two children came in to the restaurant. The waitress/owner asked what they wanted to drink and they asked for water. She told them they only have bottled water, was that okay. The dad said they wanted tap water and she said they do not serve that, only bottled water. The dad said they did not want any thing to drink. The waitress walks away. It is apparent to us that there is a money issue here and the family is trying to save money by not buying drinks or something. The dad and the daughter go outside, leaving the son in the restaurant. They walk back in with a reusable water bottle, they are immediately told they cannot bring that in. They end up leaving without eating. It was really sad how this was handled. Given a chance I would have bought their drinks and food, if needed. An older couple comes in and gets seated, the man asks to sit in a booth. He is told they can only sit in one particular booth because the others are for 4 people and they are only 2. Keep in mind that other than us, they are the only other people in the entire place. There was just an air of attitude the entire time we were in the restaurant with the service. I am not sure why. The food on the other hand was outstanding. If the service would have been at least a little friendly, I would have happily given this place 5 stars. read more

Great West Texas vibe to this food oasis in Sanderson. We were greeted by the owner Tiffany, who took great care of us checking on us regularly. Everything is prepared fresh, so except a ten to fifteen minute wait for the food, but it is well worth the wait. Sip on the homemade lemonade and take in the eclectic ambience of the restaurant. We were ultimately brought two of the best hamburgers we've ever had in our lives. The Ranch House is a must stop on your trip to Big Bend especially if you're entering through Marathon. We were so hungry and the food so surprisingly delicious that we forgot to take a picture until we were halfway through our meal. This is a our new go-to stop for our next trip to the Chisos Mountain region. We ordered the Brisket Cheeseburger and the Hungry Cowboy. Amazing! read more

We stopped here on our way back from Big Bend and it did not disappoint! Our waitress Tiffany was very nice and the food was amazing! I got Meme's Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas and he got a Cheeseburger with fries. All were AMAZING!! My girlfriend Priscilla and I went to Big Bend National Park. Coming home we were looking for a place to stop and eat along Hwy 90. Nothing in Marathon and she found the Ranch House in Sanderson. We stopped in and our waitress Jessica was fantastic and very very helpful. She was spot on in the recco of the Chicken Fried Steak. Best my girlfriend and I have had in a while. She had the house burger and we tried each other's. Also the home fries are outstanding. Jessica is great and a hard worker. Loved seeing the pics of her young Son. The only downside is we live in the Houston area and never get to Sanderson. If you are ever in Sanderson stop in and have a Chicken Fried Steak. Delicious. read more

Incredibly tasty and authentic Texas food and above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty service. On our "Texas Foods To Eat" checklist we had yet to eat chicken fried steak, and, based on the Yelp reviews, this seemed the place to nab some on our route out of Big Bend. I am 99% vegetarian and the chicken fried steak and the brisket were tender, juicy and delectable. Just saying. The crispy chicken fried steak came in a glorious puddle of county gravy which my hubby and I eagerly soaked up with the griddled-to-perfection Texas Toast (also on our Texas Foods To Eat checklist). Tip: yes, the waitress we had was armed but, as we overheard the comments from the next table over, did not enjoy being quizzed as to why she carried. Just be chill people! A side story on this restaurant. Before getting here, we had blown a tire just outside of town and were looking for a tire center to get a new one the day before Christmas Eve. The tire center in this town was closed when we stopped by but after sharing the story with our super friendly waitress she said, "Oh! My boyfriend works at the tire center! I'll give him a call." Apparently the tire center was open 24 hours on-call but we didn't realize that when we went there since there was no sign and the door was locked. So because of the super friendly service in this small town restaurant, we were able to get our flat fixed in what could have been a bad situation--on a weekend, on a holiday, and in the middle of nowhere. read more

This little restaurant was in the middle of nowhere on our road trip, but it was lunch time and we were starving so we decided to stop. So glad we did! Because they were out of a lot of things on the menu (this seemed to be a common theme at several places we stopped in West Texas, I'm assuming due to COVID), we both ordered the chicken fried steak, which is his norm but not mine. It was SO GOOD! We both agreed that it's the chicken fried steak that our Mom's used to make.... and the jalapeño gravy kicked it up a notch!
