Glamping!

In the middle of a long drive through this beautiful, sun bleached stretch of Texas, my son and I happened upon The Ranch House. Starving and with not much more than a sliver of hope to fill our bellies, we stumbled upon The Ranch House. It was an easy choice since it was the only establishment in town. I ordered the chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy and my son had a plain burger. To our great delight, it was one of the best meals we had in Texas. The chicken fried steak was the best I've had, cooked perfectly, with a crispy coating. And the creamy, spicy gravy was the perfect pairing. My son, who is extremely picky, was delighted with his burger and couldn't stop raving about it. On top of that, the owner was extremely nice and it was the perfect place to stop and get refilled. I wish we could visit again, but as a realist, I know that it's highly unlikely. However, please stop by and enjoy it as much as we did.

Great West Texas vibe to this food oasis in Sanderson. We were greeted by the owner Tiffany, who took great care of us checking on us regularly. Everything is prepared fresh, so except a ten to fifteen minute wait for the food, but it is well worth the wait. Sip on the homemade lemonade and take in the eclectic ambience of the restaurant. We were ultimately brought two of the best hamburgers we've ever had in our lives. The Ranch House is a must stop on your trip to Big Bend especially if you're entering through Marathon. We were so hungry and the food so surprisingly delicious that we forgot to take a picture until we were halfway through our meal. This is a our new go-to stop for our next trip to the Chisos Mountain region. We ordered the Brisket Cheeseburger and the Hungry Cowboy. Amazing!

Delicious House burger with cheese and add on of two strips of bacon with chips (get the fries)

Though small and quiet, this little grill puts out really good food. My daughter kept it simple with a dry cheeseburger. It comes with a side of fries that are cooked fresh, but maybe needed some time to breathe or dash a little bit of salt. The burger was cooked really well though. Noah enjoyed his carne asada tacos. Liz ordered the Potosino nachos, which were like a loaded nachos. Loaded means it came with beans, grill d tomato and jalapeno, thin slices of skirt steak, and cheese. It looked good, and I grabbed a few at the begining. I really enjoyed my Potosino plate. It was the same thing slices of skirt steak, grilled onion, jalapeno, and tomato that was on the nachos, but my plate came with Spanish and refried beans. (Same as Noah's kid taco plate). So, why the 3? It's a small place, and the dining area can be overwhelmed by a rush. Though the folks that knew were just getting food to go. There's about 7 tables/booths for 4 each, and it got crowded right after we sat down and ordered. Hey, if I can't get my coffee refilled without asking, well... Overall, I did enjoy the food. The place was clean and comfortable. It was the lack of speedy service was on no way a deal killer, but when you're on the EP to SA road trip time management can matter. Check it out if you're stopping in Ozona.

My father and I stayed for a few days at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge (a separate review), and the restaurant was just steps away from our cabin. We ate three dinners and a breakfast here with wonderful, friendly service in a quaint atmosphere. Breakfast: Dad and I had the "Texas size" pancake. It was more "Oklahoma size," despite that the manager said it would fill the plate (see photo). Still, it was a marvelous pancake, served with whipped butter and a small (2 TB) container of real maple syrup. Dad and I each needed one more container of syrup, which would have cost 75 cents, had the manager remembered to charge us. (He mentioned that after we already paid.) I totally recommend this pancake. Dinner: The Frito Pie here is wonderful. They use a ton of Fritos, which isn't really necessary, but this was still one of the best Frito pies I've experienced. -- The burger here is also a standout. I wasn't impressed with the fries, as they weren't really crispy and had very little flavor. -- Finally, the chicken fried steak was as tough as leather. I took two bites of it, along with a couple bites of corn and potatoes and pushed it to the side to finish my beer. The server offered to take it off the bill, but I felt guilty and declined. (He gave me an employee discount instead.) Bottom line: The manager here, at the time of my visit, had been in the position for about two months. He let me know that he's switching ingredients to include tallow (instead of seed oils), real maple syrup (opposed to syrup containing high fructose syrup) and other stuff that includes avocado oils instead of cottonseed/canola. I applaud him for those efforts., and I would eat here again in a heartbeat.

My husband loved his steak which was cooked perfectly and my burger was tasty. The fries were delish, they cut them fresh . Pup friendly seating in the enclosed porch! Second night dining was okay, the gal was not as good as the seasonal guy from the night before and our food was a bit more "average" ... Frito Pie appetizer, salad w/chicken and chicken fried chicken.
