The classrooms are bright, open, and calming with quality materials used for play and lessons. The many "stations" curated and rotated by the teachers ensure children can feel comfortable choosing between their favorite activities or trying new ones. The kids are exposed to many themes and subjects. The focus on education is on building blocks for kindergarten. Kids are exposed to math and reading in a way that cultivated their curiosity. Weather, calendars, arts, nature, you name it! It's amazing how much is picked into the year. Our sons pride in his handwriting and creative creations was clear each day as we were welcomed into the classroom to review his work at pickup time. The school's emphasis on safe exploration of the city was another draw. We wanted our son to become a citizen of the city. A safe street crosser who observes and learns from his surroundings. Hearing from our son about the classes prep for their walks and then their adventures and lessons around the city was great. Finally, the staff and teachers were fantastic. The care and attentiveness they brought to the school daily was always top notch. They were always available to chat about a rough morning departure for school or other issue. Old South Preschool was recommended to us by friends, and being members of the church (the school is non-religious), our son was already familiar with the building. We decided it was worth the longer commute to have him in school somewhere we were all familiar with. We had no idea what an incredible year he would have. The staff took COVID precautions very seriously, and the school was open all year. Even with all of the extra safety measures, our son felt safe, cared for, and looked forward to school each day. The teachers--many who have taught there for over a decade--are masters at what they do (I am also an early childhood educator and was continuously amazed by their ability to relate to and motivate each child). Our son left Old South more confident, independent, and definitely ready for kindergarten. Old South Preschool was such a bright spot in this very bleak year. We are so grateful to Old South and could not recommend it enough.

All 3 of my children had different learning styles and needs. 1 needed to be challenged: She raised the bar with cultural subjects -- Teaching about other countries, animals (turtles live in the classroom), time, history, music, movement, science, art, play and performances. My middle child needed more practical life skills (how to tie his shoes and put on his coat, prepare snacks and drinks, go to the bathroom without help, and clean up after himself) and Sensory/Self & Body Awareness - Linda saw a need here that year and brought in someone to teach the students (and teachers) Brain Gym (google it). My last was/is my most challenging, as she is extremely anxious/shy and has a non-verbal learning disability and auditory processing disorder. The 3rd year she was there, she received almost exclusive 1 on 1 teaching with Linda's classroom assistant teacher. All of the teachers are wonderful, they have all worked for Linda for years and therefor they all have great working and personal relationships. Currently my niece and nephew are students as are all of my cousins children and I am slightly jealous to not be a part of the school anymore. I miss Linda, Chris, Fran, Anne and Nancy! Your children will be in excellent hands! ..Important: They also have a summer program for working parents (or non-working parents) and every week in the summer there is a new theme and field trip. Noteworthy: When my oldest son went to 1st grade with another classmate from Step Ahead, the teacher didn't really know what to do with them because they were so far ahead of their peers.

My children are happy and extremely well cared for by all the teachers. The owner and Kindergarten teacher Linda has been an absolute God send to me when it comes to helping me with the education of my two children. She knows the ability and needs of all her students. I choose this school over the public kindergarten because I see how my children have grown to love learning because Step Ahead is so well organized and enjoyable for the kids. My kids don't want to leave at the end of the day and I am always welcome to stay for a few minutes to talk to any of the staff about my children's day. These teachers and after school helpers are caring, bright, creative and the best!! I am a public school teacher of 15 years so I know great leaders and teachers when I see them!!

I'm so incredibly grateful we had LCSH to care for our children. First, the leadership. Lissy and Gladys are wonderful. They are experienced, kind, friendly, professional, and very responsive. They clearly love and know each one of the children and care for their staff. There is very little staff turnover, which both creates a very nice family atmosphere for the kids and speaks to Lissy and Gladys' leadership. When the pandemic hit, Lissy and Gladys did everything they could to keep the children safe while understanding the needs of working parents. I also have compared their tuition to many other places and they are very reasonable. Second, the staff! They are such wonderful people - my kids loved them all because they are warm, loving, and great educators. My son was fully ready for Kindergarten and my daughter has learned fine motor skills, sharing, listening, resolving conflicts, and fairness. Often teachers from previous years would see my daughter in the hallway and give her big hugs. It meant a lot to us that they felt surrounded by people who care. Third, the other programs. Lissy and Gladys keep things fresh by bringing in music teachers, having field days, sports, and many other activities. My daughter looked forward to every Thursday when Ms. Monica would come to her class and bring instruments for the kids to play and to dance. Finally, the community. The parents and other children are a lovely group of people. We are sad to leave LCSH, but grateful we have the memories. If you visit the school - especially Boylston street - it's not the most beautiful location. But don't judge based on that! The school itself is very nice and the teachers get the kids out and about to the local parks for sports, water parties in the summer, and playground fun.
