Really a 3.5 rating. I hear the radio commercial for this place all the time and based on that, I would never choose to go here. I can't stand the actor's voice and demeanor in it. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. He does the same annoying thing in radio ads for Lakeview Harbor also. I have to turn the station when either ad comes on. One would think it a conflict of interest for the same guy to promote hamburgers for 2 different places using the same voice and routine, but I digress... I was brought here for lunch with 3 other people. It was my first time there. The atmosphere is interesting. You walk a thru a pretty garden into what seems like a ratskellar. It felt like we were transported to a German tavern in the basement. It was very dark and beer steins lined the perimeter of the room. I expected the staff to be dressed in dirndls and lederhosen. I was informed the portions were very large. They have a list of lunch options for $10. They include either soup, Gumbo or salad as the side. All the choices sounded good, but were all very "heavy" choices for lunch. I ended up getting the Maple Burger with Gumbo. The burger was large and came with fries. I ate half and took the rest home. The Gumbo was pretty good. My lunch companions also chose from the $10 lunch specials. They got the fried Catfish Pecan, Pork Ribeye and Boiled Beef Brisket. All were enjoyed with no complaints. Two of them chose salads for their side. The salads looked very good. You definitely get a lot of food for $10.00! In addition to that, they bring you fresh-made rolls with butter. I didn't try them since I was getting the burger, but everyone said they were great. It's a decent place with good food. The radio ads need to be updated with new voices though. It is close to fine dining, has excellent food choices, the wait staff is normally top of the line, & the owner, Brent Trauth, very personable, will walk the dining area & make himself known to you if you like. This place is amazing for lunch!!! First they have TONS of parking. The restaurant is cozy and inviting. I was meeting some people for a birthday lunch and wasn't sure where to go but was lead to the table quickly. They have a great selection of salads, if that is your thing. They also have a great selection of $10 lunches, all of which come with a choice of soup or house salad. Instead of a side salad, I ordered the turtle soup and it was was great. They also had gumbo and a chef's special to choose from. They have delicious rolls on the table that I dipped in my soup, very tasty! I ordered the pecan catfish. It was lightly fried, not overdone, just right and served over sweet potato mash with a delicious brown sauce with pecan chunks sprinkled on top. It was amazing!!! Four other people ordered it as well and everyone really enjoyed it. Our server was extremely nice and took excellent care of us. We all agreed we need to come more often for lunch because it was not only delicious but an overall great experience. Highly recommended! read more

I just moved to gretna and was super excited to try out this restaurant as my boyfriend and I figured we would probably end up being regulars here. We walked in and saw a bar high top empty and grabbed it. There was no hostess. It took about 15 minutes for us to even be acknowledged by the bartender. She was clearly in the weeds, I was in the biz for 10 years so I understand but just to acknowledge someone takes 2 seconds. After we were greeted it then took another 10 minutes at least for us to get our drinks. Our appetizers came out shortly after. Overall the food was great i had the salmon that was absolutely amazing. The service unfortunately was below average. Hopefully if we go again the service will be better. read more

My best friend decided to have her birthday dinner here on Valentines Day. She called to put in a reservation for 8 people about a week or two in advance. She was informed there would be specials on the menu that day! Me and another friend arrived first, entering through the bar. The entrance is pretty confusing. Luckily some people in the bar asked us if we were looking for the dining area! Otherwise we would have stood there even longer holding her gifts, cake, and even a balloon! (awkward) So we walked toward the dining area where there was no hostess or anything to seat us. So there we were, standing around again. Finally someone approached us, and we told them we were here for a reservation. They sat us and gave us some water and bread while we wait for the rest of the party to arrive. The waiter introduced himself and was very polite. I was thinking maybe this place wouldn't be so bad after all.. Later when everyone had arrived, we were informed that for Valentines Day, there was only one order sheet. It was 50 dollars a person for a drink, appetizer, main entrée, and dessert that they had listed. We were told that this was the ONLY thing you can order and nothing can be subbed or whatnot. Something they hadn't mentioned when she called in the reservation, but okay. We all figured out what we wanted and ordered. We waited about 30 minutes to order, 30 minutes for the appetizers, and an hour for our main dish. At that time we decided to take our desserts to-go. I understand it was Valentine's Day, but the main thing that pissed me off was watching other people coming and leaving before we had even received our food. We still tipped nevertheless, and also filled out the comment card he gave us with our check. We told him exactly how we felt about the experience. This place would get more stars from me, but there's a few negatives about this place... First, the service is by far the worst. Ive been here a few times and i always dread the service. When we were seated, it took our server about 10 minutes to come and get our drink order. There were a table of 5 and a table of 2 who came after us and they got their drinks before us! One also got their order because they knew their server. Even though we had a different server from them, it still doesn't matter! After she came got our order, it took about 10-15 minutes for her to come out and give us empty plates and our utensils (we did the All you can eat snow crabs). It then took another what seemed like 10 minutes for her to come out with a plate of them, when we seen other tables getting seconds and thirds. I don't want to jump the gun and assume, but this place either has horrible service every time we go or they are racist. If they aren't, they put the vibe as if they are because i feel like the white customers (no offense) are getting better service and more attention then my table. Our server disappeared after giving us the platter, and didnt come back to us until we needed a refill on the crabs. After we were done with our second round, our drinks were already empty, and that's when she asked if we needed a refill. Um, aren't you suppose to ask when it's like half empty or close to being gone?! We were ready for the check! The good about this place is their corn and crab bisque. It was very delicious! I don't think I've EVER said this before, but our waiter gave me the creeps, like he was planning to kill us and serve us to the next table. He was a little too enthusiastic, a little too eager to please, and somehow it wasn't in a pleasant way. When we didn't want dessert he made it seem like we were offending him. The food was expensive and underwhelming. I ordered a salad with grilled shrimp and it was okay, but I can make a better one on my own. I tried things from my family members' plates and was also disappointed. My boyfriend only took his leftovers home to be polite. What's most disappointing about this restaurant is that it's so well decorated. There's a beautiful patio and the dining area is all wood panel and brick. So we went here years ago and the service was HORRIBLE. We didn't go back till yesterday. This time it was so much better. We sat near the fireplace and ordered drinks. Once our drinks came, we ordered an appetizer, soup and salad. My only complaint is that the appetizer, soup and salad all came out at the same time. I would have liked to enjoy my appetizer before my soup and salad. I had turtle soup and it was delicious. The flavors were spot on and it even had a little kick to it. I thought I ordered a cup, but I received a bowl and I was glad I did. I couldn't get enough of it. The salad was a caprese salad and we both felt the cheese wasn't fresh, but it was still a good salad. For entrees she got the redfish and substituted the sherry sauce to a lemon beurre blanc sauce, which she enjoyed and I had the Veal and it was perfect. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. The lightly breading soaked up the lemon butter just enough to soften the breading a little, but keep its texture without losing any flavor. It was delicious and I would go back...actually we will go back probably this week. read more

A wonderful upscale restaurant on the westbank with solid food and incredible service! I enjoy ordering 2 appetizers for my meal- the BBQ shrimp and the crabcake! Wow! What a divine meal! The BBQ Shrimp are a savory masterpiece- high quality and a sauce that will blow you away! I can't express enough how utterly delicious those shrimp are! Get them! For the West Bank this place is totally four stars but it would be around 3.5 on the East Bank. This is probably one of the finest dining locations that the Wank offers. They also have made some great food for many events that I've attended. They have some very good gumbo here and they also offer a nice choice of daily specials. I particularly enjoy their Tuesday night all-you-can-eat crab special and the Thursday night half-price oyster (and ladies drink free) special. I've actually even hung out in the bar here for a birthday party once and it seems to be a popular spot in the area. I've eaten here many times at lunch and dinner and the service has always been friendly and efficient. Most of their food is good with a few items being less than stellar but in general the majority of items are well done. If I'm not in the mood for Vietnamese when I'm working on the Wank then this is probably where I will be going. read more

One of my favorite restaurants on the Westbank to celebrate an occasion or just a quiet meal! Reasonably priced for an upscale dining experience! The crew there is fantastic, friendly and the bartenders certainly know how to pour a stiff one! I've been there to eat and for karaoke night... which, like any karaoke night, is an experience all of it's own! Many times I've been thankful for those drinks to get me through a song! A charmer of a traditional neighborhood Louisiana restaurant. Great service and food at a reasonable price. Convenient location certainly a bonus. Was there on a lunch meeting, arranged by someone who lives on the Westbank. I chose the lunch special of the day--white beans along with grilled catfish. Most definitely pleased. Copious amounts of food, prepared very well. The salad served with the lunch was standard iceberg fare, but the blue cheese dressing was homemade and just great. Our waiter was a long-time member of the staff, also known to one of my dining companions who frequents the cafe. He was just about alone in working a crowded room, and attempted to make excuses for slow service. But, the service was neither slow nor harried, and his recommendations related to various menu items were well-received and appropriate. I will happily return to Red Maple and encourage anyone on business in the Gretna area to enjoy a lunch there as well. read more

I patronized the Red Maple for many years, but as the service went from decent to poor, I stopped going. This applied to both bars and the restaurant. As of late 2013, there is new management, so I thought I would give "the Maple" a try. THE BAR: After four visits I am sorry to say that the service in the bar has gone from poor to abysmal, while the prices have risen to the level of the Davenport Bar at the New Orleans Ritz Carlton. Service is simply slow and apathetic. Alcohol in their mixed drinks is nearly undetectable. Servings of wine also appeared to be very small. Everyone at our table concluded that the barmaid was being forced to provide the wine and liquor out of her own pocket. THE RESTAURANT: Eaten there twice. The food and new menu were great, but the serving size was puny. Again, the service was bad -- slow and apathetic. It is one thing when the room is full and the waiter or waitress is tending to other tables, but it is hard to understand when they perpetually disappear for long periods. No one seems to hustle or care if you get up and leave with the intent of never returning. I so want the Maple to succeed and remain in business, but there are several very good places within five minutes which consistently offer excellent food with good, enthusiastic service at cheaper prices. At $8, $10, and $11/glass for what they are serving, the Red Maple bar is doomed. read more

I have always enjoyed coming here since I was a little girl. I've had my bridal shower and baby shower hosted here and consider myself a loyal customer but tonight was rouggghhhhhhhh. I didn't think I would need a reservation on a Tuesday but apparently it was "Christmas party" night. That's fine- I look past that and understand staff are busier during holidays. I arrived first and sat at my table waiting for my family for a good 15 minutes. In that time- not a drink order or even a menu drop off or really any acknowledgment. I just sat there. Fine. My family arrived and it was a few more people than expected but they had a lot of seating so it wasn't a problem. My whole thing here is that if you already have 2-3 Christmas party's going on- you need more than 3 waiters total. It just ain't gonna work out having each waiter take on 20 person tables plus regular walk in customers. Appetizers took over an hour to come out. We were all joking that it was going to be 9pm before we got entrees and it was close to it. It was kinda painful. My cousins pork chop for $24 was the tiniest pork chop we ever saw. I would think you get atleast 2 of them. Veal was a small portion as well. think I'll check out the new steakhouse down the street next time. The Red Maple is across the street from my place of employment, so it becomes the standard place for "business lunches". I can't say that I've been blown away by anything that I have eaten there, but the food is not bad. The menu is quite extensive and has many seafood options. There is a raw bar in the front for those who enjoy raw oysters. The service is usually friendly if not a little slow. The main clientele look like they have been coming to this restaurant for decades and Friday lunches are usually very busy. The prices are a bit high for the quality of food, but not outrageous. I wouldn't make a special trip to the Westbank to eat here, but I will continue to smile when my company or other companies offer to buy me lunch here. read more

Went to lunch with 4 friends. One asked waitress if he could substitute the asparagus with creamed spinach. Manager said rudely,"you can eat all the creamed spinach you want for $4 extra". Friend replied,"well, you just lost 5 lunch customers". Waitress treated us rudely the whole time. Insane. Our bill came to $80 plus tip. We would have gone there at least twice a week. The only good thing I can say about red maple is they make a decent martini. Other than that, the food is poorly prepared and the specials are mediocre. I spent more time picking bones out a snapper than actually eating it and my date's meal was literally two fried veal patties with greasy spinach as a stuffing. The wait service offered to take off one entree due to our obvious disappointment, but this attempt was foiled by management. At one point they had a great turtle soup as a regular menu item, but that seems to be a rarity as well. Don't waste your money.
