UPDATE: In addition to Pete, Bud, Christian, and Dara have also cut my hair and they all did a fantastic job. Great lineup of talented hairdressers/barbers here. TLDR: Pete is a fantastic barber and if you've been striking out in West Chester looking for the best barber then you should go see him. Experience: It took me less than 2 minutes to book an appointment online via their website and they had several spots available after 6PM which was very helpful. Pete has tremendous attention to detail and he's extremely experienced with clippers, fading, etc. He nailed the style that I was looking for. Pete takes his craft seriously and delivers with a very easy-going demeanor. Between Pete being great, the fast turn around, and the whole thing only costing $25 + tip, The Refinery secured my business for life. Tori cut my hair and she did a great job. She helped me work through what I wanted and listened to all my thoughts and preferences. The salon has a hip vibe, but not cold. The staff are all warm, friendly, and happy to help you. Of course, being West Chester, parking isn't the easiest, but if you arrive early and circle a bit, you can find a street parking spot. read more

Bexx transformed me from the hillside strangler to Marlyn Monroe. I've never liked my hair, so I've always kept it long because "at least it was long". I wanted a major change, Bexx and her razors took me on. I went from having the hair of Gollum to a long pixie cut, and I never knew I had spiral curls. Fine. Haircut average. 2nd appointment they called the day before and said he is still unable to work and have no appointments to offer. THE DAY BEFORE. Bro you didn't know you were coming in when you were out three weeks ago?? And you are the owner? So if you value your time stay away. Hair cuts? Average. No shampoo. It's not all that. Seriously. Bexx was my stylist, i walked in not totally sure of what i wanted but had an idea and Bexx brought my foggy ideas to life! i seriously could not be happier with my hair. they snatched my curls to the gods on top of everything, which was just incredible considering most stylists i've gone to don't understand curly hair. I have frizzy, Hars-to-manage hair. She was EXCELLENT -listened carefully to all my concerns and showed me how to bring the best out in my hair. I've never gotten so many compliments on a haircut. I'm a walking commercial for this place. I found the Refinery on Yelp after deciding that paying 90 dollars for a cut and spending 10 minutes with the actual stylist and the rest with three different assistants was not working for me anymore. This experience was the exact opposite. I wanted a fairly drastic cut (for me), and Dara spent TWO HOURS on my hair. She is such a perfectionist. She really knows her stuff and was not willing to take any short cuts to get there faster. Even when her next client showed up (they schedule them really far apart to avoid this), she didn't rush or make me feel like an inconvenience. It ended up being an amazing cut. I love it and will definitely be going back. Side note, it cost a little over half of what I paid at the other ridiculous place. read more

I've been going here for a year now. It's hard to find a stylist that gives age-appropriate cuts... I can either end up looking like I'm pushing 30 or still in high school. With Dara, I know she's going to make me look my age whatever kind of cut we go with. We spend the first few minutes talking about what I want and how much maintenance I want to put into my hair (which is always close to nothing). Then she debriefs me on how she's gonna cut it. I never feel like Dara is in a rush - which also might be because I'm usually the last client of the day. But she checks in frequently to ask if you want anything changed. There were 4 stylist on duty and I wasn't even greeted..too cool to greet a new customer.., I didn't make an appointment. I stood there for 5 minutes (with a baby stroller), pretty hard to miss.. I'm not interested in the vibe, the music or the coffee. I just wanted to get a haircut. These people are rude, the closest stylist was 5' away. My appointment today was for a cut and lightening. I previously had done my own ombré using box dye and was very nervous about the appointment since I had heard that salon dyes over box dyes could potentially burn the hair. I was also nervous because it was my first coloring experience, and as someone who is super protective of their hair, I wanted to make sure that it was going into the right hands. I was greeted by Christian first and was offered some wine (praise the LORT) and Bud remembered me immediately from my consultation. He was very reassuring and was very easy to talk to regarding what I wanted and what I hoped for, etc. My results were amazing. I love this shop. Technically Pete is a barber, but in reality, the guy is an artist. He really takes the time to make sure your hair and beard look as best as they can. As an added bonus, everyone at the shop is super friendly. You're always greeted when you walk in the door and they offer you water, a coffee, glass of wine, or a beer while you wait (on the house too!). Price wise, I always feel like I get my money's worth. They also offer a membership option which ends up saving you some cash in the long run. In conclusion, go to this shop! read more

My hair looked great the first time. Cut/color/balayage framing. Unfortunately, next time she colored my hair too dark by 2 to 2 1/2 shades. It looked Goth. Being a prof'l in my mid-fifties, this wasn't going to work. Next visit I conveyed my concerns; stylist applied additional balayage, lighter this time!? Only made my roots look darker & now I had multiple shades in my hair. When I called the owner (Bud), advised I would need foils to fix my hair, but he wouldn't do it and I should go someplace else. REALLY? He refunded the price of the last service (despite my asking for the previous price when the stylist ruined my hair. Refused.) I had to find a new color specialist and wound up spending six hours to get my hair fixed. The people at The Refinery think they're really talented and cool, but they're only legends in their own minds. Beware! read more

Yay! I'm so glad that The Refinery has some good press on Yelp already! They recently moved in by my house and I'll just stop in and say hi to everyone. They are all so nice and really good at what they do. Every stylist has their own little niche too, which is nice - men's cuts, up-do's, beard trimming, etc.. Bud gave my boyfriend a really great haircut and a beer - a GOOD beer. Who doesn't love good beer while they're getting a hair cut?? Word on the street is, Bud wants to get a kegerator soon too, which means I'll be stopping in to say hi A LOT more often :) I'm also getting an up-do from Christina next month for a wedding, and I am really looking forward to it! I stopped in one night to make the appointment, and she gave me a run-through for free to test out which styles I like best and work best with my hair (and I got a beer). I don't write reviews. And I felt compelled to offer this 5-star recommendation about The Refinery Hair Studio. (Prequel: Market Street was closed today for the bike race. I got free garage parking across from the municipal building about a block away. That garage is free after 5p on weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday. Free, easy parking in town? How cool is that?!) I decided on The Refinery based solely on Yelp reviews. Thank you to everyone who helped me find my new salon! I was encouraged by the reviews though wan't quite sure anyone or anything could significantly help my sizzled mop of fine, wavy, incorrigible, desperately dry hair. I was wrong. I was impressed with The Refinery from beginning to end. The open floor plan, eclectic Pandora mix, and fresh strong coffee hooked me before I even met my stylist. Most of the stylists seemed in their early 30s and I admit I was a little worried if they could accommodate this decidedly untrendy 50-something. My worry was unfounded. And the salon far surpassed my expectations. Christian was simply terrific. He really listened to what I wanted. He made helpful, realistic, and honest suggestions. He weighed in on what cut would best suit my face and how to get softer and low-maintenance highlights. (Until today, I'd never even heard of low-maintenance highlights) Christian was quiet and friendly and effortlessly followed my my cues about when I wanted to chat and when I preferred to relax in silence. He was clearly knowledgeable and seemed genuinely interested in my questions. Together, we developed a plan to get my hair into shape and move my style into 2017. Once my roots were done, he led me to a very comfy cushy chair and expertly washed and conditioned my hair. He then applied an apparently magical hair mask (no extra charge) and gave me the most amazing scalp massage. Unlike other salons, I felt zero pressure to buy products or additional services. Christian even gave me free samples of their products. A definite plus. After about 2.5 hours, I was done and really, really pleased. My color was perfect. The cut and blow-out left me beaming. I had no idea my hair could feel SO soft and have this much movement. I learned that Christian and the other stylists were friends who decided to open a relaxed and intentionally cooperative salon. Their camaraderie, teamwork, and friendly banter only enhanced my experience. They clearly enjoy their work and seemed really grounded, unhurried, and genuinely nice. My cut and color cost $125. I would have paid at least 50% more for the excellent service and education. I finally feel like my hair is finally in trustworthy hands! I'm already scheduled for a cut, color, and highlights in 5 weeks and genuinely look forward to working with Christian. The Refinery really deserves more than 5 stars. Give the place a try. I cannot imagine you'll be disappointed. read more

They were so quick in getting back to me, and really wanted to make something work for my schedule. I went in the day after I made the appointment, and had one of the best haircuts I have had in a long time. I only wish I could remember the adorable girl who did it! I will say, it was the LONGEST haircut I have ever had, but I think that says something about the quality of their work. The salon is clean and well decorated. The prices are actually a couple bucks less than what I was paying at a corporate salon! I get my hair cut by Racheal and she is a fantastic hairdresser. Always gives me a good cut, listens to feedback, and makes sure I like all of the aspects of my hair before I leave. She's really fun and upbeat and it makes me trust her. I have short, wavy, fine hair so it can be a challenge, but Racheal makes sure my cut is always flattering. I highly recommend! read more

I just got my first cut here with Bud and I'm extremely pleased with the results. Bud's got the the cutting skills, for sure, but what stands out in contrast to my last salon is that he really took the time with the consultation. He asked lots of questions and made sure he got to know how my hair works before he started cutting. I've been so tired of going to salons with reference pictures and a clear description of what I want and still having stylists do kind of whatever they feel like instead, so the ethos and work ethic of The Refinery is refreshing. Trisa gave me a Deva Cut and it came out great. When I first walked in, I was offered a drink and opted for the red wine (although they have non-alcoholic options too). Trisa and I discussed what I wanted out of my haircut and asked if I wanted the run down of curly hair and how to take care of it. We skipped this, since I already know my stuff! We had a great conversation throughout the haircut, and she even explained to me the difference when it comes to cutting curly hair versus straight hair. She gave me one of the best hair washing experiences I've had to date. If I could pay her to just massage my head I think I would. She let me know that I could come back for some touch ups if I didn't like how my curls were falling. Curlygirls, I highly recommend a haircut with Trisa! She's quite reasonable for a Deva Cut and the salon has an awesome atmosphere that I really enjoyed. Everyone was friendly from the moment I walked in to when I left. read more

I don't get all of these positive reviews. Yes the place looks cool but they have no idea how to cut hair. The woman didn't know how to layer long hair and simply cut out chunks of it instead. I ended up going elsewhere and had to have all my length cut off to let it grow out evenly and correct her mistakes. You'd be better off at one of those ten dollar places. read more

Get your haircut here! I first heard about this place when my boyfriend got a trim there and then decided to give it a try. Bud gave me a fantastic new haircut. I came in with super long flat hair and he gave me a "lob" with lots of body and texture! Very personable and easy to talk to, he made the haircut enjoyable. The entire staff was extremely nice and helpful. When styling my hair after the cut, Bud walked me through what he was doing when blowdrying my hair and even gave me lots of tips on how to style the hair myself! As if that wasn't enough, he said I could come back in if I needed any hope styling my hair myself or if I wasn't happy with the cut. The decor of the place is really neat also. It is trendy and somewhat rustic. They havecomplementary beer, wine, coffee, and water available! If possible would have given negative stars!! The place is over priced and lacks talent. I went in for a simple haircut with Bud. He was rushed & literally hacked up my hair. To my horror or horrors there were two distinct layers in which the hair was cut. It looked like a 3 year old had cut my hair. I had to to to another salon 'Bad Hair Day'(Awesome salon!!!) to get it fixed. Don't waste your money stay away from this salon!! read more
