I believe the original owners were Cuban and now the new owners are Mexican (which I found weird). The layout of the store is basically the same but the staff is a little standoffish. The old staff was very helpful, suggestive and would offer recommendations, the new staff kind of sorta had an attitude the 2 times we drove 1000 miles from South Carolina to Union City NJ and were inquiring about new products, any services provided, etc. They just wanted us to hurry up, pay, and go. The products used to be first rate, I always get the camphor and anil tablets, a few oils, sprays, baths, incense, prepared candles, chime candles, crystals, sage sticks, statues, books, etc. Upon arriving home, we found out some of the oils had crystalized matter at the bottom of the bottles. They were OLD! I had to microwave the oils to try to dissolve the gunk on the bottom. Some of their prices are high but it's still a good old fashion botanica. I am grateful for all of the wonderful memories, advice, products, statues, rosaries, crystals that I have purchased here over a 14yr period.

The difference in how I was treated compared to other customers was clear and unacceptable. I was not greeted or offered help at any point, while other (white) customers were. Instead, I was closely watched the entire time I was in the store. At the front of the store, a male employee pretended to organize items but was actually staring directly at me for several minutes while I was looking at incense. I paid attention to see if he was actually working or watching me, and it became clear he was pretending to organize while staring at me. When I called him out, he denied it and walked away. In the middle of the store, while I was looking at the incense you can hand pick, a female employee was also staring at me and following my movements. I purposely moved side to side to see if she was following me, and she mirrored me each time. I called her out, she denied it, and walked away. Still in the middle of the store, when I moved to look at Florida Water, that same male employee continued staring at me from the register. When I asked him for help, he went to the same female employee who had just followed me instead of helping me himself. She told him the answer, and he relayed it back to me, showing he was not knowledgeable about the products yet was quick to follow and watch me. Then I went to the back of the store to look at mala beads, and from the middle of the store that same male employee continued staring at me again. This happened multiple times within about 20 minutes. I confronted him again and asked why he kept staring at me and why I had not been greeted or asked if I needed help. He admitted that he did not greet me or ask if I needed help, and when I had to ask for assistance, he didn't want to help me and was not knowledgeable about the products I had questions about. I went next door to their sister store, Namaste Bookshop to ask for a manager's contact information. The employee was hesitant to provide it and incorrectly said there was no email. When I called the number given, no one answered. In the past, I've shopped here and this never happened to me, which makes this even more disappointing. Based on this experience, I will not be returning.

You just need to either look or ask for it. They have tons of comics, baseball cards, jewelry both real and costume. They have a butter churn that was amazing to see. I also found a piece of Star Trek memorabilia. I found 2 books I wanted to buy but they were expensive new. I explained I didn't want to pay more then 50% retail price for it. The lady explained that prices might be negotiable. Both books came out to much less then I was willing to pay. I walked out a very happy customer. They also buy everything they sell from instruments to sheet music from portraits to paintings. I was amazed at how organized everything was and how much the store actually held. Quest Bookshop was the only place that popped up. The location is perfect for me because it's super close to the train and in the area I work in. This bookstore really specializes in spiritual things but theres a lot of information plastered everywhere I didn't feel too lost. They have a lot of stones and they tell you which each one is meant for. I saw in the back someone reading tarot cards and they also have other events like knowing your enneagram which I thought was pretty cool. I don't know much about this bookstore but I feel like it's such a nice staple in midtown that I can really see myself as a regular.
