I was introduced to this place back in 2017 by a co-worker. Who is now my wife. This shop is quite small, but cozy. Packed with everything from Incense smudges, scents and soaps; to unisex jewelry, rocks & crystals (raw and cut) tarot, greeting and playing cards. The owner, who is so friendly and always with a smile, is always there to answer questions and help out with recommendations. You can usually hear him talking with a soothing cadence, that is relaxing to listen to while browsing. The place is usually busy, with people of all walks of life, but not overly packed. Worst costumer service ! I've always tried to support small businesses, and on my previous visit I even purchased gift cards, a candle, and perfume. My friend and I returned recently to exchange Christmas gifts and maybe buy something else, thinking it would be a friendly visit. Instead, the experience was shocking and completely unacceptable. We just walked in and The staff worker made unsolicited, rude repeated comments, telling us we shouldn't be there saying we can't smell testers each time we want to buy, creating an atmosphere where we didn't feel welcome at all. This wasn't a one-time thing - the same behavior happened during a prior visit, which I had ignored at the time.but still got the perfume. We came in as paying customers, showing nothing but courtesy, and were treated with hostility. If you want to come in and try testers, DON'T unless you want to be treated badly for no reason. I've never in my life experienced anything like this, anywhere in the world. I will never return or support a business that treats customers this way nor spreads that energy. The feeling you get in walking into this little mysterious store is wonderful! I'm Addicted to the 'specialty rose' incense they make themselves. They rival the Fred Soll's Brand hands down. I ordered a pack online but it can't wait to get back to lower Manhattan and have at it in there for more of their exotic and rare scents. When my friend and I walked into the store a few days ago, we were initially really impressed with the selection, but our experienced was soured by the customer service. We were browsing and taking everything in (and there's A LOT in there!) and after 5-10 minutes, the cashier says "Come on, you guys are taking too long." I was never made aware that there was a time limit in this store, and there wasn't anybody waiting outside so we were really confused. So I would only recommend this place if you know what you're looking for. Def don't come to browse unless you're planning on only spending a couple minutes here. My African-American 14 year old daughter stopped here with a friend on 10/3/2021- armed with her credit card and cash to purchase a necklace and was accused of stealing without any cause. This is my first review for anything on Yelp, I was so deeply impacted that I felt a need to share my experience. I would give them negative stars if I could. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. The place is tiny, did not bother me, me and a friend were very respectful of their two people inside only policy. While we were inside (hadn't even been more than 5 minutes) two other people started to wait outside. When I asked a question (it shouldn't even matter what question I asked but if you are curious I asked about the wisdom stones) the man was like oh you aren't buying anything, you're taking too long etc etc. who the hell is he to assume I wasn't about to buy anything? Well, let me tell you, Scent Elate is the perfect place for those sort of explorations. Yes, they carry the incense you will see on street stalls on St. Mark's Place. But they also have many more scent pleasing products as well. Take for example, Fred Soll's incense. That incense is all natural, hand made, hand-dipped, and dried in the New Mexico sun. The scent is so much stronger and distinctive, and a single stick will burn for 2 hours! That's amazing. Better yet, you can get 20 sticks here for $11 which is cheaper than what I could find on the internet (Amazon wants $15 for the same quantity). Amazing. They also have Lampe Bergers, reed diffusers, and a lot of New Age friendly stuff to accent the home. The place is tiny, but it is packed with great stuff.
