Dragging myself to the gym was increasingly difficult this winter. It was cold, the days were short, and all I wanted to do after a long day of work was curl up on the couch in my Pjs. I knew that if I couldn't motivate myself to get to, and stay at, the gym, another exercise option was needed.
Having never done a spin class before, I researched the various options in the area. At $13/class, Revolution was about average on cost when compared to the two or three other spin gyms in the cap region. My first class was the one of the latest time slot they offer - a 6:15 pm weekday class. I left work promptly at 5:30 so that I could have more than enough time to get there in rush hour traffic. I had e-mailed the gym ahead of time letting them know it was my first class and asking some basic questions. Nancy (perhaps the manager or owner?) e-mailed me back within 24 hours and advised me to arrive 15 minutes early so she could set me up with the bike and give me some basic tips. Well, apparently 45 minutes is barely enough time to get from Albany to Loudonville during rush hour. We got there with just minutes to spare. Regardless, the instructor was still able to set us up. The evening class was great, but THAT TRAFFIC! I wish more later weekday classes (starting 6:30 and later) were offered for those who work and don't live in the Latham area (the latest class starts at 6:45 and it is only once per week). Come on, Revolution! Can we add a 7 pm weekday class for the working gals and guys?!
I've only ever done the "Rev Up" class (descriptions of each kind of class are on their website, many different kinds offered), which is 45 minutes of cycling, and I will admit it kicks my butt every time. The two instructors I've had are encouraging, motivating, and cycle with you the whole time. I feel like I get a really good work out during these 45 minutes. There are two television screens that will track your heart rate and estimate your calories burned. If you want to be able to track yourself, you'll need to buy a special heart rate monitor with wi-fi ability to connect to the system. The instructor will sometimes have an extra heart-rate monitor that she will loan out, but she usually just has one.

For each class, be sure to register online. Aim to arrive a few minutes early to get yourself situated (if it's your first time, arrive 10-15 minutes early). There's one bathroom and a changing room, but no showers. There are hooks for jackets, but no lockers, so pack light. There is a water cooler, but there are not cups, so BYOB (the "B" is for Bottle, guys!). Bring your own small towel to wipe your brow - you'll need it. The music is loud, but if you're sensitive to that, there are earplugs you can grab at the front desk. Classes are mostly women, but there are a handful of men who come. Ages are diverse and range from high school students to people in their sixties. read more
