For dinner we had the Bistro Steak and special - soft shell crabs over grits. Dessert was chocolate pudding. There was no salt and pepper on the tables - it wasn't needed. Seasoning was perfect. I think the service was the icing on the cake. My brother and his girlfriend brought me here for a birthday dinner. We didn't make reservations, but the employee expressed that we could still come in and get a table. I'm Not sure that was a great idea. We were told the wait would be an hour. We all wanted to try the place because of the many recommendations we received. But waiting for an hour in such a tiny restaurant proved to be uncomfortable. There is only one entrance so traffic is pretty busy by the door where the chairs are positioned for those waiting to be seated. The bar was completely full, but the server did ask if we wanted anything to drink while we were waiting. We were seated with almost 15 minutes to spare . We ordered the Southern Poutine as an appetizer. My brother said, "It doesn't look appetizing, but it tastes so good." I have to agree with him. I hate sausage gravy, but this gravy was good! I was able to taste the sausage flavor all the way through the gravy. The pimiento cheese was flavored wonderfully and wasn't bland at all. I've never really had those two items taste good, so I was definitely surprised and my taste buds were too. I ordered the Quoit Club Punch and The Spaniard ( I copied the spelling directly from the menu). Both drinks were choices that required me to try something different. They had great combinations of sweet and liquor. Both drinks were good, but the Spaniard was a little too much for me. My brother ordered the roasted chicken. He loved the flavor and tender texture of his chicken, but he didn't like how the juices made his grits soggy. Although he didn't like the vinegar on his greens, his girlfriend loved them. She ordered the scallops. She loved the scallops, but wasn't a fan of the other items on her plate. I enjoyed the creme doused on the scallops though. I ordered the rockfish. It was so tender and seasoned well enough for me to say I'd order it again. The server made me aware of the sweet potatoes when I asked her opinion of the rockfish. She shared most people don't like the smoky flavor of the potatoes. I thought I may like them, but she was right. They aren't the traditional orange sweet potatoes I'm used to. They were white sweet potatoes and the the smoky flavor was good, but I didn't like the texture of the potato. Our server, Lindsay was amazing. I loved her hoensty and she provided great guidance on the options at the restaurant. I'd love to come here again. I will definitely make reservations next time though. This is a classy old joint with great food and a terrific little bar. We strolled in without a reservation. The dining room is small (an old 1st floor parlor), so there was a wait (said maybe 45 minutes), so we sat at the bar. I am quite happy we did, because Aidan (the bar-tender) was an artist, and took great care of us. He was quick with great advice on both drinks and eats. He created (with a flare) the best whiskey sour I ever had. It was called a Danville Rattlesnake. Then it was a hard call between the rockfish and brussel sprouts and the pan-seared scallops with mushrooms and farro. I went with the scallops and it was perfect on a chilly autumn evening. It arrived at the bar in a ceramic stew-pot, bursting with warm earthy flavors! I had to add the Cheese Grits with Hot Sauce Butter on the side. More warm soothing comfort food. Delicious!!! And at Aidan's kind suggestion, I had the chocolate pudding (with orange cream and coco-nibs) for dessert. Good selection of meals for the event. I had scallops as one part of my 3 course meal and they were done just right! One of my favorite local spots!! I've been here 3 or 4 times now but realized I never wrote a review! I've had everything from the pimento cheese & pork rinds, shishito peppers and hot wings. (Both are ABSOLUTELY flavorful and AMAZING). Today I got the roasted wahoo, which was cooked perfectly with brussel sprouts, lentils, peril onions and some other thick sauce on the plate which complemented the whole dish well! I've had the potato gnocchi before, which is also amazing and few tastes of the steak and scallops (also super tasty). They also have different specials that the waiter tells you. I got a special dish another time I went (hen?) and it was amazing!! The homemade cocktails are another item you need to try. Ive gotten a different cocktail each time because they were all hand crafted and original from the bar manager (T). He's been in a lot of local Richmond food videos and what not. So...WOW. We were staying in Richmond for a few days in the church hill area. Our host at our AirBNB recommended the Roosevelt for drinks, but after looking at the menu and reviews here on yelp (and realizing we didn't want to walk far or uber unless necessary) my husband and I decided they were also a worthy dinner. Perhaps there is something the south has on food that just does not make its way to the north and west, perhaps the Roosevelt is a true traditional meets contemporary foodie haven, or perhaps we were just really hungry. Or perhaps all these. Whatever the case, the Roosevelt was so amazing we almost immediately planned to come back the second day of our two-day visit. Sadly they were closed. But on the first day we enjoyed... - The seersucker. Slightly sweet, tart and wonderfully boozy, the seersucker was a great way to get a light buzz on before our meal which consisted of... - Smoked wings with Alabama white hot sauce. I just can't describe how fantastic these were. The wings were savory and smoky and dry, while the white hot sauce added an amazing rich tangy, creaminess. By far one of the best dishes I've ever eaten. - The wasabi potato salad. Potato salad is often bland and its easy to think wasabi would send it into an unsafe territory, but the blend was fantastic. - The half chicken with risotto. Hubby found this just as amazing. I had a little of the smoky chicken and it was off the hook. Our server was sweet, and our only major disappointment was to find they are NOT open Sunday evenings, which meant we didn't get to go try more of their amazing entrees. The fried oysters we're under the small plates menu so I ordered the side to accompany my meal. The fried oysters we're delicious, nothing but subtle flavor and crunchy breading. Not overbearingly heavy batter, still could taste the juicyness of each oyster bite! The fries were OK, and I could hardly taste the garlic in the garlic aioli dip. But of course, as a fry fiend - devoured it anyways. I enjoyed the charred roasted brussel sprouts, nothing too fancy and the cubed ham sprinkled on the plate to add flavor to the brussel sprouts were flavorful. Added lots of flavor to the sprouts. Delicious! I tried my husband's hangar steak which came out beautifully presented. It did lack some flavor, but my theory is that the dish was way too heavy on the mustard seed garnish that it took away too much of the steak flavor. Nonetheless, he said he enjoyed it. One disappointment we did have was the dessert. We ordered the brown sugar cornmeal cake. It mentioned in the menu that it had blueberry preserves. We assumed that the slice of cake would have a blueberry sauce or a small scoop of preserved blueberries to accompany the cake. But to our dismay, the blueberry preserves was just one tiny blueberry garnish on top of the icing. We finished the cake as it was delicious but the description was a but decieving. I've been to the Roosevelt once before for drinks and have been aching to eat here for months now and the universe finally provided me the opportunity during Restaurant Week! What a freakin' steal! The building the restaurant is housed in is stunning. Victorian style craftsmanship at its finest which gives the Roosevelt a quaint charm. The bar is gorgeous and inviting and the serve up an ever changing craft cocktail menu that is absolutely on point. For my first course, I had the asparagus with white anchovy, burrata, and a traditional Caesar dressing. The asparagus was perfectly crisp and the balance of the salty white anchovy with the creaminess of the burrata made every bite an absolute delight. The second course was steak with ramps and fingerling potato with a salsa verde. The steak was cooked to perfection with a beautiful pink center and seared edges. Finally we had foie gras pound cake with a dollop of strawberry gelato. God please the Roosevelt and any restaurant that uses foie gras in nontraditional ways. I'm not gonna say it's as good as my Grammy's poundcake which was legendary but it was pretty I'm! See what I just did there? The Roosevelt is definitely going to become of my new favorite haunts. We ate dinner here last night and the food was wonderful! The restaurant is a little small and noisy. But the food is so worth it. We started out with the Pork Skins. They came with Pimento Cheese, Pickles, Cucumbers, and a marinated Onion. Believe it or not, all the flavors work together perfectly. I had the Bistro Steak with potatoes. The flavors were wonderful. Went here last night for Yelps supper club and was not disappointed. Before heading to the restaurant, I checked out a bunch of reviews online to see what to order and everything had good reviews! When we were seated, we all ordered one of their signature cocktails. I got the Montenegro Bay which had amaro Montenegro, smith and cross rum, honey liqueur, lemon, grapefruit, allspice, nutmeg and absinthe. The flavors were amazing but fair warning, the drinks are STRONG! A bunch of our group ordered apps... Personally I was more interested in saving room for dessert but they all looked amazing! I ordered one of the specials, the crab cake and got broccolini instead of fries. It was DELICIOUS and just the right about of food. For dessert I got the chocolate pudding with orange cream and pistachios. Very flavorful but I was so full from dinner I was only able to eat half. My husband and I love this place! I highly recommend that anyone that visits Richmond, NEEDS to try this place out. I highly recommend eating here either for lunch or the evening/dinner time. It was our first time eating brunch there and it was alright. We decided to get mimosas, I ordered the Crab & Queso fresco omelet. It was pretty dressy in sauce and tasted pretty good. I wouldn't praise it being my favorite, but it was interesting. The brunch was a nice place to at least try one, but I would highly recommend a dinner date instead. I'm giving it a 4 stars for right now, but once I get another evening date with photos of my food, I'll write an updated and better higher review. I didn't get a chance to sample the food as I was just coming from dinner. My husband and I sat at the bar and it was great to be able to be accommodated so close to closing because our initial cocktail spot placed us on an hour wait. The bartenders were extremely pleasant and accommodated my spouse and I on our "mocktail" request..."taking a dry June." The bartenders were extremely understanding as they expressed that they try to curate multiple mocktails because they noticed a lot of people taking moments to "un-wine" especially with how a lot found that they were doing that in Covid. The chef was hospitable and sent out a pickled popcorn flavor upon hearing that it was our first time visiting. I love that the menu has an upscale approach to Southern cuisine. While they only have one restroom from what I observed, it is gender neutral. The aesthetic inside would make for a great date night or brunch with friends. Went there for wedding anniversary. We ordered crawfish roll as an appetizer which was very tasty and yummy. We ordered steak for both of us and it came with mashed potato and grilled rapini which also was cooked perfect medium rare and tasty as well. All of the staff were very friendly and even when my wife's glass of wine slid off the table (table was tilted), one of the waitress came and cleaned it right away. Only thing that bothered us was the original waitress (super tall, pretty woman with buns in her hair). Way she was treating the table next to us was night and day. When she was going over drink menu with them and explaining specials, we were like wtf....she literally only asked us if we were having drinks other than water. The roasted chicken breast entree is where it's at! It is so delicious, I am craving it right now! I came here last week with two others with a 6:30pm reservation. We were seated immediately, and our waitress was on point. She took our drink orders, and I got the yu maika hiso. The drink wasn't overly sweet which was exactly what I was looking for. It came with eclectic ingredients like miso and bonito. Now on to the food - The chicken was cooked to perfection. The rice and butternut squash was the best match for the protein and also cooked well. The flavor of all the ingredients together was fantastic, and the portion was appropriate for one person. I finished the entire plate and was completely satisfied! I am typically a dessert person, but I didn't even think about it. The atmosphere of the restaurant is low-key and dimly lit. I was (finally!) able to convince them to give it a shot for brunch, and I think I made some new converts out of them. They have all of your standard alcoholic brunch drinks; however, I really suggest giving their non-alcoholic options a try, especially if you need to avoid a post-brunch slump. Specifically, the JK Punch (black tea, cinnamon, lime, pineapple, and soda) and their limeade (with soda) were both super refreshing! My brother-in-law and sister both swear by the cheese burger and fried chicken sandwich. I went for the crab, green chick peas, and cheese omelette which was very impressive. It comes covered in a bacon hollandaise and a homemade hot sauce. On our next trip, I need to convince someone to try the roasted beet salad because A) beets are delicious and B) the plate we saw had an innumerable amount of beets. What more could one want? I can't remember the name of the drink I ordered, but it was a rum drink with citrus juice, and was perfect after a Friday night driving up 64. We split the cornbread and absolutely loved the bourbon butter. The cornbread was warm and made just right. We ordered the soup special (it had a name I've never heard of before), it was a black chilled soup with lump crab meat. It wasn't my favorite, but I appreciated trying something new, and it was light enough for an appetizer. For our entrees, I ordered the tilefish special, which was a thick piece of fish, pan seared with beans and a chimichurri-like sauce on the side. The fiancé ordered the duck leg confit, which he found tasty. Overall, we were really pleased with what we had ordered and impressed with the different flavors each drink and dish executed. Excellent! We had cocktails and apps. It was all amazing, as well as fairly priced. For the snacks we got the ranch pork rinds with pimento (AMAZING) and the chopped salad. For cocktails, my boyfriend got the Booker's Manhattan. It was very good, but a little on the sweet side for us. I got the Punji Stick aka Bad girl Bamboo which was Gin, fino sherry, cocchi rosa and dolin dry vermouth. It was really tasty and unique!
