Been craving some GOOD octopus after coming back from Portugal and I have to say I found it here. This is some of the best octopus I've had- we ordered two!! We sat at the bar which was great because the bartenders were super friendly and attentive. Didn't taste too much of the pumpkin in the espresso pumpkin martini, but man, it was a delicious espresso martini. We were there on a Saturday night at 8:30pm and it wasn't busy! But I think that's just your luck on the day. Would love to come back and try their happy hour!

Came in on a Monday evening for drinks before having dinner elsewhere... The bartender was friendly and did a nice job making drinks. The bar is beautiful and slightly upscale in design. They have a nice cocktail menu as well as lots of great wines, including many VA wines. They also have the ability to make craft cocktails, those including Chartreuse and other spirits. Overall - Nice drinks and a good time was had here.

I went with friends this past saturday and although it was a holiday weekend, it wasn't super busy; steady but not packed. While the atmosphere was decent, the service was soooooo slow. My friends and I had planned to have dinner there too (celebrating a birthday) but it took 40 minutes to get drinks and the waitress didn't bother to ask if we wanted to order, etc. We left and ended up going next-door to La Grotta (and had an incredible meal!). Would not go back and would not recommend Gather & Hem.

    Beer taps!

Beer is back! The amazing team of friendly servers (Aubrey, Jon, Blake and more) are GREAT and now the management has restored the beer taps to accompany the amazing deviled eggs (get a side of chips), crispy shrimp with fried jalapeños, kale Ceasar salad, a more! (They need ensure they that Falcon Smash is a regular, not a rotating selection! :-)

This place feels like your standard hotel bar. Nothing too flashy, but enough options to sit and either hang at the bar or at one of the tables. The complementary champagne with the purchase of food was too sweet as they put a brown sugar simple syrup in, but I did like the lemon twist. The artichoke flavor and texture were great. I was a little hesitant to order this dish with the tomato compote, but it honestly made the dish. They have a couple options for vegetarians but nothing substantial enough to be called a meal, so save this spot as a night cap with appetizers only.

Popped in on a Tuesday night for their happy hour and they had live music playing, the lights dimmed, and the aesthetic was on point. I will note, I felt that they didn't have as many cocktail options for happy hour as I thought they would. My friend got an old fashioned (on happy hour) and I got a chai martini drink (normal price) which I thought was very pleasant and sweet. The staff accidentally charges the old fashioned as a regular drink but quick to correct that error and even the manager I believe gave her their number to call just in case it didn't get resolved. Thankful for their attention to the matter!

Never been here before Yelp event but driven past many times. Will definitely come back! Loved the atmosphere and music. Happy runs from 7-9

Service was abysmal. Waited 15 minutes when there were only 4 tables for the three servers. Table came in after us and got their food before my drink came. My partner never received their drink and there was no apology made. Food was slightly overpriced but honestly delicious. Fine if you are are getting take out I guess. First time I have tipped less than 20%

My sister and I dined at Gather & Hem prior to the Damian Escobar concert at The National. The hostess was welcoming & professional. Our server was also welcoming, courteous, attentive & knowledgeable about menu choices. Every item we chose from the menu was absolutely spectacular. I had the Fried Shrimp & the Chocolate Beignet. Both items were perfectly cooked & full of flavor. Our cocktails were elegantly crafted & we loved the fun names attributed to the drinks available. My sister had the Maymount Mule & I had the Scotch Addition. Both drinks were delightful accompaniment to our meal. The ambiance & decor of the restaurant was inviting & relaxing. I loved the earthy tones that surrounded us. Gather & Hem is definitely a restaurant I plan to return to again. It is a very conveniently located to downtown events. Parking is very accessible. Also, if you are attending a downtown event & have your ticket, you get a discount off your meal. I think that is absolutely amazing & demonstrates the establishment's investment in serving the community. I highly recommend dining at Gather & Hem if you enjoy great food & drink choices in a lively & inviting environment.

    Hat Lady
    Lydia L.

This place deserves a much better rating than its current one, though there is room for improvement. I started with the High Tea, which was nice but not phenomenal. My second drink was the Hat Lady, which I thought would be too sweet, but it turned out to be a lovely balance of sweet and light that made me so happy. For food, I went with the steak sandwich, and I will say honestly that there were flaws. The steak was pretty fatty, and it was a definite medium well when I ordered medium rare. But it was still tender, the bread was fluffy, and the mustard sauce was unbelievably good. Don't believe the ratings, this is a very good if not great hotel bar.

A new cocktail bar in Richmond in the Hilton hotel, Gather and Hem has a nice Great Gatsby-like interior with an interesting food/cocktail menu. The cocktails were interesting, we ordered drinks which had Fernet Branca and fresh chillies in them. While the ideas were interesting and the drinks refreshing, they lacked the level of elevation we were hoping to get as there's a lack of those kinds of bars in Richmond. The food was interesting as well and feel in line with the drinks. The poutine was a poutine, the shrimp were decent, and the charcuterie board was well put together. The real star of the show though was the octopus. It was charred very nicely and was tender. The food was about what we expected but I'd probably go back for drinks before going back for the food. The ambience was nice although it got very loud at some point. The service was also just alright. At some points, we felt like our server was spending a lot more time with other tables and we had to wait to get more drinks or order food at certain points. I would come here again if people wanted to go here but I do believe there are better cocktail bars in Richmond in terms of both the food and drink.

    Fresno She Better Don't
    Jazmin W.

Popped in because I needed a good cocktail after a lackluster dinner at a nearby restaurant. The space is nice, it definitely doesn't feel like you're at the bar for a chain hotel - more of a lounge vibe for sure. Service was fine - the bartender was doing the best he could solo, and at least acknowledged that he was be with me soon as he had finished the drinks he was making. I opted for the Fresno she Better Don't, which was so good! Spicy and a little tart with a tiny but of sweetness as well. The bartender let me know that they had just changed the menu, so I really regretted that I didn't come earlier in the night to try at least one other cocktail. At a glance, the food menu also had some dishes I would be willing to try. Would definitely return if I am in Richmond again!

Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.
