We wanted to leave her a really nice tip but she ended up going home before the bill was closed out. I hope the server that she helped did the right thing and gave her the majority of the tip because Aniya is the one who did all the work! The Hostess Temeka was also great! Nice spot for a cocktail and small plate! We stopped there before heading to a concert. Cocktails were all interesting and we later came to learn that the bartender making them had even been the creator of the drink menu! The food was primarily small plates and on the pricey side. They were inconsistent in that I wasn't a huge fan of all we tried. Sliders were simple and octopus was delicious. Been craving some GOOD octopus after coming back from Portugal and I have to say I found it here. This is some of the best octopus I've had- we ordered two!! We sat at the bar which was great because the bartenders were super friendly and attentive. Didn't taste too much of the pumpkin in the espresso pumpkin martini, but man, it was a delicious espresso martini. We were there on a Saturday night at 8:30pm and it wasn't busy! The complementary champagne with the purchase of food was too sweet as they put a brown sugar simple syrup in, but I did like the lemon twist. The artichoke flavor and texture were great. I was a little hesitant to order this dish with the tomato compote, but it honestly made the dish. Popped in on a Tuesday night for their happy hour and they had live music playing, the lights dimmed, and the aesthetic was on point. I will note, I felt that they didn't have as many cocktail options for happy hour as I thought they would. My friend got an old fashioned (on happy hour) and I got a chai martini drink (normal price) which I thought was very pleasant and sweet. The staff accidentally charges the old fashioned as a regular drink but quick to correct that error and even the manager I believe gave her their number to call just in case it didn't get resolved. This place deserves a much better rating than its current one, though there is room for improvement. I started with the High Tea, which was nice but not phenomenal. My second drink was the Hat Lady, which I thought would be too sweet, but it turned out to be a lovely balance of sweet and light that made me so happy. For food, I went with the steak sandwich, and I will say honestly that there were flaws. The steak was pretty fatty, and it was a definite medium well when I ordered medium rare. But it was still tender, the bread was fluffy, and the mustard sauce was unbelievably good. Don't believe the ratings, this is a very good if not great hotel bar. read more

A new cocktail bar in Richmond in the Hilton hotel, Gather and Hem has a nice Great Gatsby-like interior with an interesting food/cocktail menu. The cocktails were interesting, we ordered drinks which had Fernet Branca and fresh chillies in them. While the ideas were interesting and the drinks refreshing, they lacked the level of elevation we were hoping to get as there's a lack of those kinds of bars in Richmond. The food was interesting as well and feel in line with the drinks. The poutine was a poutine, the shrimp were decent, and the charcuterie board was well put together. The real star of the show though was the octopus. It was charred very nicely and was tender. The food was about what we expected but I'd probably go back for drinks before going back for the food. The ambience was nice although it got very loud at some point. The service was also just alright. At some points, we felt like our server was spending a lot more time with other tables and we had to wait to get more drinks or order food at certain points. I would come here again if people wanted to go here but I do believe there are better cocktail bars in Richmond in terms of both the food and drink. read more

My friend and I ordered lamb chops, probably the most expensive thing on the menu and they took a while and came out cold. I sent mine back, waited a while just to have the same lamb chops handed to me at the same temperature. Usually management is sent out if food is sent back and no one came out to make sure the 2nd round was fine. I was so hungry and did not feel like sending it back again but was very disappointed as this was my first experience with this restaurant. The bill came out to 140 something. My husband and I had dinner at Gather & Hem on New Year's Eve. I can't comment on the bar or mixed drinks because we didn't have any of those. The servers warned us that they were short staffed, but we had great service. They kept up with the pace really well. We started off with the artichoke dip. It was very creamy and rich, and it came with some delicious baguette slices. My husband had a classic bacon cheeseburger with fries. Their fries were really good, very large - both crispy and soft. I had the Caesar salad with grilled salmon. It was fantastic - the cornbread croutons and pecorino cheese really elevated it. The wait was over 1 hour plus long to get the food. Then we get the food and it was nasty. No flavor way over cooked not worth the wait. Then we tell them my husbands Mac and cheese is uneatable it was mush and had no flavor. They said that there is nothing they can do it comes with the meal. Then I over heard the manager giving someone else a free voucher for breakfast for their food mistake. The only decent thing was the crab balls. The rest was greasy or way over cooked. No stars would be most appropriate. First, as we approached the establishment... an employee was standing outside smoking and literally turned his back as we approached the door, and made to attempt to open the door, say good evening ladies, nothing! We proceeded into the second set of doors and had to motion to the people inside the restaurant/bar (or rather the DJ) to open the door so that we could gain entrance into said bar, again... employee standing right outside the door. Our server was nice so I will say that he deserves the one star that I had to give, he was truly a sweet person but this review isn't because of him. We ordered, ate, drank and paid but the icing on the cake was that I was told that not removing my sunglasses was against the law and that if I didn't remove them, I would have to go. Good thing we were done y'all lol I took my last sip of the one drink I ordered and we departed. Now let me say that I'm a Marriott STAN so I should not have been in a rancid Hilton in the first place so there's that but it was the careless way in which we were treated upon entry and allowed to order and SIP our bubbly for a solid 30 mins without incident. Overall, there is, was and will never be anything special here & if the Marriott ain't broke, just don't even cross the street AND if it is broken... just sleep on the curb, you'd be in better company!!!
