One of the most creative meals I've had. The place was packed on a Thursday night, filled with young and old, black and white, and the service was impeccable. The space is intimate enough for a date night, and big enough for a large group. The bartender made me a perfect Manhattan and was rather entertaining as he told me all about the dozens of Rye and Bourbon choices they offer. I had a goat cheese appetizer that both looked and tasted fabulous. I followed that with a fried soft shell crab on a bed of tasty potatoes. We ordered the broccoli, and lobster dumplings as an appetizer to share in our group of 3 and had three entrées; seared mushrooms, fried catfish, and the smoked yam and crème brûlée for dessert. I loved my vegetarian option the smoke yam. Excellent smoked flavor on the black eyed peas and collard greens. Fried cauliflower was firm, crispy and soft center. Perfect dish. Only could have wanted more. My friends loved their seared mushroom and thought fried catfish was good, not amazing. The lobster dumpling was such a mild flavor to the point I was wondering was there any bits of lobster in it at all? The shaved fennel was the best part of this dish. There were 4 dumplings. The crème brûlée was terrible and tiny - it tasted like meat was at the bottom. Potentially rancid or just horrible flavor. My group and I were deciding 'do we send it back?' Fancy dinner with my project manager to kick off two projects in Richmond. We arrived early for the reservation that I had booked on Yelp and were able to be seated immediately. Warmly greeted and handed drinks and dinner menus, I could already see that we were off to a good start. I chose the German beer as my beverage with the meal and it was excellent. For starters, the pork rinds were terrific. Crunchy, fresh and a little spicy, they were served with their house-made pimento cheese and some sliced pickles. Probably enough to share but I didn't. For main course, I had the pork chop. It was fabulous. A huge portion of sliced chop with the bone as well. It was perfect on my keto diet as long as I stayed away from the pimento cheese grits and I mostly did (they were excellent). The chop was cooked perfectly and the presentation was excellent. Charming place with delicious food. This place is quite popular and I'd recommend booking ahead to secure a spot. We started off with the legs and eggs. The frog legs were crispy and juicy. The cornbread with whipped maple butter was the perfect start to dinner. The maple butter was nice and light, not too sweet. The halibut was so freaking good. I am a sucker for cute. I was out for my morning run on a recent business trip to Richmond and noticed this "cute" establishment in the Church Hill area, which is full of cute. I can forgive missteps in food or service in a great atmosphere, but in this case there was no need; for "cute", ambiance, service and food, The Roosevelt never missed a beat. I love unique when I travel so I try to look for local and special; that led me to the crab soup and the duck gumbo. The crab soup was creamy and delicious. I wish they sold it in cans; I'd have let with a dozen. The duck gumbo was so unique and incredible. It was appropriately spicy to qualify as Cajun, but not so spicy as to overwhelm the flavor of the duck. I am already planning a visit during my February trip to try the alligator appetizer and smoked yam. read more

I am still discovering cool places in Richmond and found this lovely gem. We dined on a Wednesday night and the place was not packed at all which was great as we were ready to eat. All of the staff was friendly and prompt bring out or drinks and meals. They have a decent bourbon list with some prices questionable but they do have a sleeper on their menu that I tried to order but they were out. The food was good but not exceptional. What really makes this place special is the ambiance. It's intimate and cozy. The bar is exceptional and I'm not big into that sort of thing. My family members that enjoyed an adult beverage were really impressed. I loved the way the bar was set up.. fascinating old school design/display. On street parking was open and spaces available. I made a reservation for my brother a chef, author, a grad of the Culinary Institue and Cornell professor who taught cooking and dining room management. I wanted to show off this East End place, There was a mix-up in our reservation time--THAT HAPPENS. The gentleman who greeted us could not have been more rude if he tried. Rude, condescending, dismissive. We were embarrassed and left. He was not even apologetic. My brother reviewed many major restaurants in the country for American Express and was appalled at our treatment. Of course, there can be confusion on reservations, that happens. I've only lived in Richmond since August, but The Roosevelt had been chilling on my bookmarks list for much longer. It was consistently recommended by others while I was still only making sporadic weekend trips and considering the move from my home state. So it was great to finally put a restaurant to the name and try a few of their dishes during this past Restaurant Week. My friend and I made an after-work reservation last Wednesday, and we watched the entire place fill up within the hour. It's a popular spot for good reason! My first course was the crostini with ricotta cheese, spring peas, and fresh mint. It was as refreshing and pillowy as it sounds. For my main dish, I was pretty set on the pork sausage but asked our server if it was spicy. She thought it was at first but double-checked with the chef, who relayed that this iteration was cooked mild. [Woohoo!!] The dish came with carolina golden barbecue sauce, potato salad, and barbecue slaw. It was so hearty but also managed to be light and not make me feel uber full. I love that. And special shoutout to that stellar potato salad. For dessert, I selected the foie gras (ethically raised!) pound cake topped with strawberry gelato and sauce. The texture was wonderful and the cake was on another level. Truly one of the best desserts I've had in ages. My meal was paired with the jungle juice cocktail: gin, grapefruit moonshine, fino sherry, sage, and citrus. It was much classier than the name would denote. In addition to the food and drink, the ambiance was relaxed and hipster, and the servers were all friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the cornbread, bruleed bucheron, baby squash, compressed watermelon and the crawfish roll with 3 other patrons. We loved each one and we all enjoyed an entree on top of these. Highly recommend the Nashville Hot Soft Shell. It was super tasty, not too spicy and labeled for my allergen needs! Love that the menu has so many gluten-free options. It's been WAY too long since I've been to The Roosevelt. Stopped in today for brunch and got the fried chicken thigh, roasted potatoes, slow cooked eggs with sausage gravy. OMG there is a such thing as heaven on a plate! Simply perfection. Great combination of flavors and textures that are all perfectly seasoned. The crispy crunch of the fried chicken was unparalleled. UNPARALLELED! I also tried my friend's crab, sausage & cheddar omelet, bacon hollandaise drizzled with hot sauce and stone ground cheese grits. Hers was good, but mine was better. 1st timer. Went here this morning Sunday 2/4/18 for brunch. Ordered the Fried Chicken Thigh which came with 2 slow cooked eggs (kind of poached), Fried Potatoes, and Sausage Gravy. I also ordered a Mimosa. The restaurant itself was quaint and kind of rustic. Pretty nice as were the staff. The mimosa was not to my liking. I believe it was the kind of OJ that was used. Needless to say I didn't drink it. As far as my breakfast. It was good. Nothing to jump up and down about. Not worth $21. I read reviews and expected more based on that alone. We came here last night to celebrate my boyfriends birthday, and am I glad I made a reservation. We were seated, greeted, and got our orders in a very timely manner. The breading was so flavorful, but the meat was so tender and juicy. the chili honey that came with it was probably my favorite thing ever. - brisket appetizer special: The brisket was cooked perfectly with a fall off the bone texture, and had a spicy kick to it. The mangoes that accompanied it gave it a good balance between sweet and spicy. - cornbread: Our cornbread was good, but unfortunately the bottom half of it was burnt to a crisp. Probably just a bad batch, but it still tasted good. The maple bourbon butter that came with it was so good, I could eat it with a spoon - Mussels: the portion was huge! I want to say it was close to 40 mussels. The broth was a corn and bacon broth, which sounds like it would be very heavy, but it was super light. The garlic bread that accompanied was toasted to perfection - Rib eye special: The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The roasted potatoes and veggies were delicious. - Fries with sausage gravy: different from what i expected but still good. The sausage gravy I expected was what you would get with biscuits and gravy. But these fries came with a sausage gravy that was more sausage than gravy. Where to begin... Probably with this review is five years overdue. The Roosevelt is absolutely my favorite restaurant in Richmond. It brings together excellent food, the best people, and amazing experiences that simply cannot be topped. I'll write more about my most recent trip shortly, but it's also worth pointing out my wife and I got engaged here. We now own the original church pew where we sat the night we got engaged. When I say this place is special, I mean it. It's also probably worth pointing out that the Roosevelt team has taken care of me and my friends on one too many late nights. I'm fairly confident my group holds the record for most Seersuckers in one night. More recently, on a subdued and very rainy Thursday night, I enjoyed dinner here with two friends. They had martinis, I had seersuckers (what I always have). The cocktails are amazing and I love the consistency of their bar team. We started with the chicken wings with Alabama white sauce and cornbread - also two annual favorites. The wings are great but the sauce is to die for. On this night, I also went to a favorite for dinner - the burger. It is one of the best in town. So many flavors and excellent size. But no matter what you get here, you will be happy. Their steak and chicken dishes, rotated seasonally, are always good. They have excellent fried chicken when you can catch it on special. It is just an excellent kitchen. I was so excited to check out the Roosevelt when I found out that they are participating the RVA Restaurant Week; I had such high expectation and even studied the menu before I visited so I knew exactly what I wanted. To be completely honestly, I was very disappointed that they ONLY served the three-course restaurant week menu (since all restaurants from my previous restaurant week experience included their regular dinner menu as well) and I honestly don't think they included the best items from their regular menu, especially for the appetizers. For appetizers, my partner and I got the caramelized funnel & apple soup and the sautéed baby carrots. Both appetizers I felt was a bit lackluster. I appreciate the creativity and thoughts behind the caramelized funnel and apple soup, where I think they were aiming for a creamy, sweet and savory soup. However, the soup itself was overly sweet and although the peanuts offered a nice nutty flavor, there were simply not enough peanuts to balance the whole bowl of soup. The shredded kale was not crispy either and failed to add any texture to the soup. The sautéed carrots were not mind-blowing as well where the brown butter glaze was overly sweet. The whole dish was very one-noted in flavor and my favorite part was actually the pickled onions, which weren't much of. The entrees were pretty standard. We got the roasted chicken breast and the cast iron pork chop. The pork chop was supposed to be medium, but judging from the color, they were definitely more well done than that. My partner mentioned how the meat was a bit tough but overall still good flavor wise. I really liked the sweet potato hash which was tossed with a garlic sauce. The roasted chicken was done very nicely, super tender and juicy. The mushroom rice was very creamy, rich in flavor, great texture from the mushroom and the butternut squash. The only thing is that I wish for this dish is bigger portion size (more of a personal issue but still). The BEST part of the meal was the dessert. Highly recommend the pumpkin cake - super fluffy, soft and moist in the center with a nicely baked outside crust. The pumpkin aroma was prominent and definitely shined through the sweetness of the cinnamon rum glaze. The spiced pecan added a nice contrast in flavor and one cake is just simply not enough. Also got the peanut pie which was super rich and all you can taste was peanut butter (and I say this in the best way possible). The pie crust was very dense though, which I don't really mind but it is not like the usual flaky pie crust. Overall, the dinning experience was pleasant, the staff was attentive and friendly, the vibe of the restaurant is very cozy and warm. I still have a good impression on the restaurant although I was not fully convinced by their food - I do put majority of the blame on the menu so let's see if I can come back after restaurant week for their regular menu. read more

I've had The Roosevelt bookmarked in my Yelp app for far too long. I finally managed to make my way to Church Hill and see what all the fuss was about. It was early October around brunch time. The Roosevelt is a charming little corner spot near a five point intersection where 25th and Jefferson Avenue meet M street. You're on your own with street parking. Inside The Roosevelt one is greeted with warmth and coziness. The hostess was attentive and charming. I wasn't very adventurous and ordered a Mimosa. After a cursory look at the menu I went with the 'fried chicken thighs, cast iron potatoes, slow cooked egg, and sausage gravy' and I'm glad I did. As my colleague once said to me "a runny egg yolk is nature's best seasoning." Fried chicken with a slow cooked egg seems a bit unnatural (like a cannibal) but dipping the potatoes in that yolk was divine. I could have used a touch more gravy but that's only because I'm a gravy fan boy. The seasoning of the chicken was spot on. I cleared my entire plate and felt the portion size was perfect.
