Wow. We came here on a good friends invite. We knew the food would be great but wow were we impressed. We have visited and enjoyed the other restaurants attached to the root note crew , but the crepes here are top notch and deliciously created. There are sweet and not sweet selections. The great people that work here don't act like they are working and are some of be most friendly people. The food is fresh and made to order. Came here to see a band and really fell in love with the intimacy of the space. It is a coffee bar and also has a great beer selection. They serve food, but just needed a stout beer and some great tunes and they cheerfully obliged me. Old wooden and brick ambiance that plays into the river towns historical feel. I stopped in The Root Note for lunch today. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, but I wanted more flavor from everything that I ordered. I ordered two crepes: The Cremlin (Mushroom, Red Onion, Spinach, White Cheddar, Thyme, Fried Egg) and the Honey & Lemon. I also ordered their Maple Latte. Maple Latte: Presentation was alright. The latte art/design was off-centered and just kinda "meh". As I started to drink the latte I asked myself, "What flavors am I tasting?" and my answer was "Maple....I think?" The maple flavor was faint. I really wish the maple flavor would have "popped" more. The Cremlin: This crepe, from the "savory" side of the menu, had a very strong mushroom flavor and texture. I would have liked more of the spinach and white cheddar because the mushrooms kinda of overpowered the rest of the crepe. The fried egg was....actually perfectly fried. Props to Root Note for nailing that. And the texture of the crepe itself was right on the mark for a crepe. Again, I was able to feel the different parts of the crepe, but there wasn't a flavor that really stood out to me. More thyme, less mushroom, more cheddar...it was good, but I wasn't amazed. I want more flavor! Honey & Lemon: This crepe didn't have enough flavor for me either. In the crepe alone I couldn't taste any lemon and I wish the honey flavor had been stronger. What I have issues with is the "lemon" part of this dish's name. From what I understand and from what I tasted, the only lemon flavor in this crepe is the lemon that you add...from the lemon wedge it's served with. If you're going to tell me it has lemon flavor, then I want it served to me with lemon flavor! Now, to be fair, once I squirted my small lemon slice on the crepe, the honey and lemon flavors were well-matched. Ehhh, I could go back and forth on the Honey & Lemon crepe. If they served it with the lemon already squeezed then the crepe could get soggy and the lemon flavor could be too strong. I guess it's just a matter of opinion. For my overall score, I'll leave this dish out just because some want it one way, others want it another way. Overall, the consistency and texture of the crepes and the drink was very good, almost perfect. The maple latte had underwhelming maple notes. The Cremlin was a little too mushroom-heavy and the Honey & Lemon, well, that's more of a matter of opinion. Good food and a great atmosphere! read more

We were completely satisfied and filled to the brim by the marvelous breakfast change in routine. Try the latte with fresh and locally harvested maple syrup making this a good for you breakfast drink then move on to the savory yet satisfying crepes. The So Gouda had a creamy sweet potato purée that hits the harvest time craving we all get this time of year. The fresh greens and vinaigrette completes this dish. We're guessing most people try the baby blues which is also a great choice. It has just enough blue cheese to make it tangy and tasty. We'll be back no question! ps. I love the hipster vibe of this cafe. It is easy to miss on 4th street because there isn't any huge or lit signage. Although it appears to be a coffee house, they do serve alcohol, but the menu is not extensive. The beers are craft beers. There is music in the evening. They do NOT accept credit/debit cards. There is an ATM machine on site. The BEST reason to visit the Root Note is the crepes. They serve both savory and sweet crepes. I prefer the savory version and ordered the Cremlin. It is a crepe with sautéed cremini mushrooms and red onion with fresh spinach, white cheddar cheese and thyme. It is topped with a fried egg. It is so scrumptious. You won't be disappointed with a visit to The Root Note. We stop each time we visit La Crosse. read more

The Root Note is really cool! I got a chance to see and play at the place this past Saturday as a part of Midwest Music Fest! I also got to meet the owner Dane, some of the bartenders, and John the sound engineer! All were very sweet and have a great spot to see music, eat food, have a latte, and drink really unique beers! They also had a green room area for bands down stairs that was cooler then most bars I have been in! And I love Bars! The stage is medium size and can fit a band nicely, with a couple monitors and a good sound system! Music sounded great in here! There is lots of tables so it's a nice listening room for softer acts or you can move the tables and have a bit of a party if you wish! Cool space, unique menu, and beer menu, awesome staff supporting local and regional music how can you go wrong! Oh and I almost forgot my favorite part, there was an old tub with real fish in it! What a fantastic find in La Crosse. Found Root Note via yelp. Incredibly helpful staff talked us through the entire menu. Menu is small with each dish done expertly. Two savory crepes (baby blue and cremlin) and one sweet (banana Nutella) were tested by our family. Savory crepes served with perfectly sized and dressed simple salad. Every bite made you want to keep eating. A bowl of black bean soup was the best we'd ever had. A must stop in La Crosse. read more

I got the baby blu savory crepe. Oh my goodness, it was amazing!!! It had just enough blue cheese that it didn't over power the crepe. There was fresh spinach, bell pepper, and green onion in it. The best part was the over easy egg inside!! It's so worth it. I think this is going to be my obsession for a while. I also ordered a hot chocolate, which is tasty. It was much better than cabin coffee but not as good as moka. The wheat grass shot was a very nice size, considering it was over $4 a shot. A few works to describe it: hipster, vintage, music, coffee, beer. I come to the root note on a regular basis when I'm in town. Great place to read and work, not too loud. The food selection is small, but it's all very delicious! As far as coffee, if you are a coffee snob like I try to be sometimes, they have a huge selection of drinks. They also offer a lot of locals brews at the bar, and their coffee beans are local, too. They have t shirts, stickers, and local artist's works up on the wall and posters for sale, which I dig. They have an events and music almost every night of the week. A big space, but it gets chilly in the winter. Also the seating isn't overwhelmingly comfortable or anything, but there is quite a lot of seating. read more

I skipped the tea and coffee tonight, but I did have a fantastic light dinner. Black bean chili - with so many fresh veggies that I didn't miss meat a bit. Very hot and flavorful. Especially nice was the fact that the carrots weren't cooked to mush in the chili. I also had a crepe - red peppers, goat cheese, spinach, and I don't remember what else. Also very good. I've been going to the Rootnote for years and recently it has gone down hill. I had hair in my cremlin crepe last time I was there and I was incredibly disappointed with open mic night. The new host is terrible (male, long hair, piercings). A night that was once all-inclusive turned into a night for him and his friends. His friends took up two tables in the front and while he scolded the audience for whispering while his friends were performing. He (who sat right in the front) talked the ENTIRE time while others performed. So much so that one performer who was going to play two songs said "you know what, just forget it" & walked off stage. Please bring the old girl back who encouraged EVERYONE, was respectful, & whispered good job after each performer. She was lovely. read more

Went here for breakfast on a Saturday morning with my wife and 6 friends. I ordered two crepes and lattes for my wife and I while the last of our friends showed up. The lattes were fine, nothing special; I ordered the maple and it was incredibly maple-y, to the point where I'm sure it's not a real maple flavor, just some processed flavoring syrup. I was very underwhelmed and disappointed with the speed at which our food was brought out. Our lattes were delivered to the table, and we received out two crepes about 20 minutes later. 20 minutes for two crepes!? They have at least 2 crepe hotplates, and they take a couple minutes each to make. There were about 15-18 people inside the entire place, but for some reason it takes forever and a day to get your food. Out friends who arrived when I had finished ordering had to wait between 30 minutes up upwards of the hour we were all there, just to get their crepes. Even at it's busiest, the place didn't have more than 25 people in it. There were at least 8 people working there, so it's not like they were shorthanded in the slightest. One guy got a bowl of granola - it took 25 minutes for them to serve it to him - 25 minutes to pour a bowl of granola, give me a break! Two of our friends had to go ask for their crepes to go, as we had a wedding to get to. They received their crepes in a styrofoam to-go box with an "I'm sorry for the long wait". Nothing to make the situation better, just a sub-par delivery of goods. All in all, the food was fine, I had the cremlin crepe and it was under-spiced. I'd get something different next time, but as we were visiting from out of town there most likely won't be. Even if I lived in La Crosse there wouldn't be a next time. The Root Note has the feel of a laid-back hipster coffee shop that serves over-priced savory food; laid-back to the point where they don't take punctuality seriously and believe everyone who comes into their shop has hours of nothing to do but drink 5 lattes and design indie art on their Macbooks while waiting for an over-priced crepe. The folks who work there are lucky they don't work in the business world, this sub-par service wouldn't fly for a day. Cool place, but not worth it. read more

I mentioned something about this to the staff and got a blank stare. My guess is that these people are relatively new to the restaurant business.
