The Root Note has been one of my staples since I moved to La Crosse in 2009. Crepes are amazing, my personal favorites are the Berries & Cream and Baby Bleu. I love their loose leaf tea selection as well. I enjoy the Rishi Coconut Oolong. Customer service is always on par and are willing to accommodate when necessary. I especially love coming for concerts and live music, or even just to chat with a friend. I like that they've added options for beer, wine, and cocktails, too. Huge fan of this place. Amazing collection of events and live music to compliment the excellent coffee and beer selection. Large bowl of chili is a good deal and very delicious. Get to know the baristas and staff there. Most are extremely friendly and enjoy interacting with guests, both regulars and visitors alike. The Root Note is a relaxed coffeehouse atmosphere, home to the best homemade pizza in La Crosse, with food and drinks that are sustainable, often organic and really friendly to vegetarians and somewhat to vegans. This restaurant belongs to a certified sustainable forest. Right now the desserts are not vegan and there are not a lot of vegan options. Though what they do offer is quite good. And what is great is, The Root Note takes feedback and suggestions and is always offering new things. They plan to expand their vegan options more and more. They also offer live music from local bands and others, and have the coffee house atmosphere with a good amount of space to enjoy. I love being there and I feel good after I have eaten there. I feel that they care about my needs and health. The menu is flexible and the people are laid back and talented. read more

Cool, hipster coffee shop. We were there pretty early in the morning so had no lines. Service was chatty and very friendly. We sat at one of the 2 small tables out front because we were with our dog. The latte and iced chai were both very good and pricing is what I'd expect from a higher end café. read more

A great venue, but terrible service. Drinks are good, but you might as well a spin the drink wheel at the Bodega across the street because there's a good chance you'll end up with something you didn't order. The staff is very nice, but very forgetful. They also aren't very good at customer service when they mess up; expect an apology, but not an immediate fix. read more

This place is fantastic! Literally fantastic! I had the Cremlin crepe and it was amazing. I would eat it everyday. So good! My mom had the berry crepe and my daughter had the chocolate banana crepe and both were super yummy. They are made to order and this place should be on your list when visiting La Crosse. I really like the Cremlin crêpe....cremini mushrooms, spinach, red onions, WI cheese and a fried egg on top with thyme and a nice pile of greens on the side. I was in La Crosse for a week for a conference and was thrilled to discover this place! The conference food sent me searching for good food and I found it at the Root Note. This place is so cool! I would seriously go there ALL the time if I lived in LAX. I wish it was in Milwaukee instead! I loved the ambiance- it's so hipster (and I am NOT so hipster) but I enjoyed it, regardless. It feels more like sweet old antiques store or a best-kept-secret local library crossed with a slightly surreal dream (bathtub full of fish) and a hint of up-North cabin flavor. I had a pour-over coffee, which was so delicious and smooth, and a cup of black bean chili with blue corn tortilla chips. I would have liked to order one of the famed crepes but I just needed a snack to tide me over until our event. I would also liked to have ordered a beer if time had provided- there are some nice looking microbrews on tap. This is one of those places where I would like to frequent to laze around and decompress with their good food and drink and a book. Maybe the Root Note warrants a road trip back to La Crosse. read more

We've come twice now and I have to say it's my favorite spot in La Crosse. It's the only place that makes me feel like I'm in a coffee shop in Chicago again They really captured that "uptown/rustic/chic" vibe. Their crepes are amazing. Coffee is splendid. You can order a flight of healthy drinks () and on Tuesday nights they have live jazz! Everyone just hangs out and switches places with their instruments. It's a good time. Some of the other things I like about this place: service was friendly and authentic (although during busier times I understand when certain cashiers are rushing and feeling flustered), it's actually WARM!(so many coffee shops are literally freezing inside but this one has a good temp, especially when they don't have a double door entrance), and it's lit during some music nights (I'm glad they keep the lights on, it feels so much more homey. If they turned th lights down it would lose that comfortable vibe and feel clubby). Overall: check it out if you're in the area. read more

The ambiance and clientele imply this is a spot for locals. Especially locals who like simple-approach, delicious food. Myriad coffee options lured me in, and the abundance of tea options will entice a return trip with my tea-drinking-only partner. (Puerh, herbal, caffeinated and non.) A couple of bike parking spots are available out front. Plenty of couple and quad seats available. Ample light comes in from the all-glass front. Music is moderate volume, which allows for conversations at reasonable levels from everyone. I was moderately surprised they are cash-only, but luckily there is an ATM across from the cashier. I ordered the Cremlin, and an iced Americano with vanilla. $11 later, and I was very happy with everything. Will definitely be back here again when I'm next in La Crosse, WI. read more

I haven't spent much time in Lacrosse, so this has been an opportunity to expand my horizons. The restaurant struck me as a beautiful place, with all the baggage attached to that word (think Marilyn Manson), but I still enjoyed myself. There were a lot of youngsters in there, and, to a person, they were all nothing but friendly from the moment I walked in. (Damn, kids, stay on my lawn!) This is definitely inclusive of the staff, who were all very helpful and had customer service on their minds. The Gremlin crepe with a cup of lemon lentil soup was somewhat slow coming out and the manager checked in with me to apologize. That was refreshing. I told her that it was well worth the wait. She thanked me! Add that to the Smashing Pumpkins playing after open-mic night ended, and the overall vibe of the joint was stellar. I'll fight the urge to visit again tomorrow after the workshop is over, but not very hard! read more

This is a hip spot in La Crosse that offers up live music, poetry slams, stand up routines, cold beer, and decent food. I came here on an open mic night that was definitely a good hang. This community of artists know each other and stick around for one another's performance (for the most part). The staff crushes it here because they are taking orders, cooking, pouring drinks, and running the show. If I had that amount on my plate (pardon the pun) then I would have a little edge about me too...and these staffers do as well. Just smile and say please and thank you. It'll go a long way...or it won't. Either way, your glass will be full and stomach happy. read more

What a great find! The Yelp reviews did not lead me wrong! I came for the crepes, and enjoyed the Cremlin. It was loaded with mushrooms with a warm egg on top and a small bed of salad greens on the side. Very tasty! I came back the next day, though, for the black bean chili!!! Chunky with all kinds of vegetables, this chili is one of the best veggie chilis I've ever had! And if you do dairy, you must have it with the cheese AND the sour cream. I have lived in La Crosse for 20 years now, almost my entire life, but I first visited the root note last Saturday afternoon. I have always heard from friends about the amazing atmopshere and how it was perfect to study and do homework. I have also been invited several countless times for the live music, which I have heard is also wonderful. It was actually raining, so we stopped in to catch a break from the rain and potentially order a small snack and coffee. Well, we just ordered coffee. I paid $9.50 for two SMALL maple lattes. I was at least expecting a medium sized cup. What was even more appalling to me was that we waited 15 minutes! for two small lattes! I did not understand why, because a group of 4 people that came in after us, got all of their coffees before us. Not sure if they just had regular coffee, so it was easier. I also understand that they were consistently busy, but with this being my first experience, it will also be my last. The cashier even knew it was our first time, but you can tell by the way she treated us, that they have their regulars and if you're not one, they don't really care about your service. It is super cool how you can watch the cook make the food though! read more

The place to B in La Crosse! A pal & I came to the Root Note to hear a trio of musicians from Berlin called The Trouble Notes. We had a blast! Excellent Crepes,libations,& music and the place was jumping. Pretty good mix of easy going people enjoying a unique sounding combination of a Gypsy,folk fusion instrumental three piece band with a violin,guitar,&drum box pouring powerful music over the crowd ,which had early on been louder than they needed to be,but in time were captured,and nearly silenced by the sweet performance of the Trouble Notes. Very helpful staff,easy parking & plenty of seating made this an enjoyable evening. read more

This bar has a good atmosphere and really appeals to a younger crowd which gives it a good vibe. But, there is a specific problem that I would like to address. Their beer menu is good and all but they only give you 12oz of beer in a pint glass. They advertise as if they're about to give you a pint of some micro brew that is marked up about a dollar. But when they pour the beer, they leave a 1-2 inch head which is frustrating. They should make it clear that they are only going to give you 12oz of beer. When I asked why they leave so much head they simply told me "that's how we do it". It's unsettling that they do this when they have competitors that serve you the correct amount of beer.
