With everything this school has to offer the best part is the staff, they're selfless and do anything to make sure you succeed in every way possible, in school or not they'll be right with you. The dress code is professional and like your average salon, there's no crazy rules that are easy to follow. If it wasn't for the tech program and the amazing guidance from Kelli I wouldn't have continued the program, while you're in her class she does what she can to help you understand and exceed in everything you learn. The Instructors in the adult program are just as amazing, they strive for your success and give you every opportunity to do the best you can and get to every goal you have! If it wasn't for this school I wouldn't be where I am today!

I explained that I've had gel manicures and pedicures done for years at both salons and schools with full soaking included, but told them I was still willing to proceed. Instead of simply scheduling the service, an instructor was brought over who immediately seemed defensive and confrontational. She insisted that soaking nails before gel polish was not allowed in Michigan and gave questionable explanations about bacteria. She then refused to do my pedicure because I was wearing an aircast for a sprained ankle, despite the fact that it could easily be removed and I had no mobility issues. As a registered nurse, I understand my own limitations. The interaction became increasingly uncomfortable, so I chose to leave. I then went to The Salon Professional Academy, where I was treated professionally and respectfully. They provided a full manicure and pedicure, soaked my nails as part of the service, and completed everything without confrontation or unnecessary drama.

They are friendly and the place seems to run efficiently, as far as I could tell. My boyfriend came in for a haircut, and while he got his hair done, I decided on an impromptu mani/pedi, which (at my request), was simply to have my fingernails and toenails painted. It was really nice that they could do it as a walk-in, and I didn't even have to wait. The student showed me color choices on one sample stick. She said they had others, but that this brand "stayed on better" than the others. I picked a color for my fingernails, and a different one for my toenails. The problem was either her speed or the polishes were old, or both. She somewhat rushed through painting my toenails first, and I thought it was a little fast but I figured they would dry by the time all was finished, so I didn't worry too much. But then she went to do my fingernails, and she put on the base without removing my current polish (which was a worn basecoat, so perhaps she didn't see that they were somewhat shiny). Then she didn't wait for each coat to dry in between, which consisted of the base coat, two coats of polish, and the topcoat - shortly, she was done, and they were a gooey mess. She said they would dry, and went on her way. I waited another ten minutes until my boyfriend's haircut was done, and my fingernails were still sloppy wet. I mentioned it to the student who had cut his hair (they were across from me, so I waited there until they were finished). She noticed the problem, too, so she offered to redo them they, which I gratefully accepted. We removed the polish the first student had done, and redid it, allowing a little more time between each coat. Then she brought over a little fan to help dry the polish. This whole time my toenails were still drying, and probably half an hour had gone by since they were first painted. They still weren't dry. We sat there with the fan for about five more minutes, and at that point, he was restless to go, so I carefully picked up my purse and we left. I didn't put my shoes back on, but wore the little foam slippers instead, even though it was cold outside. We went to lunch, and after lunch was done, my toes seemed fine, so I put my shoes back on and we drove home. My toenail polish seems fine, although it never felt like it completely hardened. My fingernails? Forget about it. They never completely dried, and now, a few days later, they are peeling off in pliable strips. Complete waste of time and money. Neither student did a better job painting my nails than I could have done at home, come to think of it. I'm wondering if they actually teach nail painting techniques at all, actually, or if they just offer that to be a full-service salon...hmmmm... Interesting note: after his haircut, a fairly disinterested instructor came by and checked the students work, did a few touch-up snips, and I assumed the same would happen with the mani/pedi. No instructor came at any point to check on the mani/pedi work, so perhaps they don't evaluate that? I don't know. But I can't recommend the place for getting nails done.

Each service did take a bit longer than it would at a typical salon, but they're students, and they are very attentive and careful! Ariel did my hair today and she was amazing! I showed her a picture of what I wanted, which was very light blonde balayage on dark brown hair, and she said she would do her best but wasn't sure if we would be able to get my hair that light. I was totally fine with that, as it usually would take a couple appointments to dramatically lighten dark brown hair. Parts of my hair actually became a little reddish from the remnants of box dye that I had used about a year ago, so she recommended a few options for getting the red out and it all ended up working out. It didn't turn out as light as I had first wanted it, but it still looks amazing! The red is gone, and the blonde is still very light! It was blended well with my roots so it looks natural and sun-kissed. AND it's not nearly as damaged or fried as I've experienced in the past with bleaching. Huge shout out to Ariel for working with me for over 3 hours and doing everything she could to make sure my hair looked like what I wanted. She's awesome!
