Got a haircut on a whim after work recently after I remember that the Aveda school existed in GR. Check in was a pleasant and professional experience, and the student stylist chosen for me , Abbi, was a wonderful person and stylist who took the time to make sure my hair cut was done correctly, and she asked for feedback from her educator each time she had a question about the process. A very professional and pleasant experience at Aveda, being my first time and all. I will return in the future for more cuts. Went in for a root touch up. It was a complete failure. They had died my roots black while the rest of my hair was dark blonde/gold. To rectify the situation, they proceeded to tone down the rest of hair to match the roots. Nearly four hours later, I walked out looking like a clown with dual toned hair. While I understand a slight mismatch between the roots and the rest of the hair, what they did to me was beyond. read more

Man - I am upset! I've been going to Douglas J since I moved to GR about 7 years ago and have always had a good experience. That's why I keep going back. But this past Saturday I had the worst experience I've had - with a stylist who simply wouldn't and didn't listen to me. I felt like we spent a lot of time in the consult - I had just cut my hair into a bob a month prior, I needed face framing layers and some weight taken off the ends of the bob. I said the shortest I was comfortable going was 1/2 inch off MAX. This was a shared understanding. During the haircut, Sky kept making little comments about "not going that much shorter than we talked about" which isn't saying a lot because like I said - my hair was in a bob. Towards the end of the haircut she told me she had cut more than we talked about because she was trying to even it out. Then the instructor came over and said my hair was uneven!!! Very frustrating experience. I have finally had my first Douglas J experience that will motivate me to think twice about scheduling an appointment there. read more

Where to start..... I went in for a "manicure" a few weeks ago. When I got there and sat down, my manicurist informed me that this was her first manicure. All good with me, I'm patient. I assumed that she'd been taught what to do. Everything was just a mess. The first 15 minutes, she couldn't even find an instructor. The parrafin wax machine was not melting the wax properly. Everything seemed to be going wrong. After the wax machine was "fixed" and I had my treatment, on to my nails. My stylist was very sweet, but also told me that she had no interest in doing nails. So why did I get matched up with her? Match me with a stylist who actually wants to do this! I had to stop her at some point when I realized that she was filing over a ridge in my nail and making it deeper! What???! At that point I just wanted it to be over, honestly. My nail was very sensitive afterwards, probably because it was now so thin it was almost non-existent. About a week after the service, the tip of my nail started to peel away. I've attached a photo of what it looks like now. In summary, stay away from nail service here unless you pick your stylist and trust their experience with nails. read more

i got my haircut yesterday at the salon. the stylist asked what length I wanted my hair, I told her and showed her a picture of what my hair was like at that length and she completely butchered it. she made it 2 inches shorter than I asked her to, which it is now at my jaw when I asked for my collarbones. i also asked for layers, which I got none of. the stylist didn't ask if the length she was doing was good, she just cut at the jaw straight off the back. i normally go to aveda for my haircuts, but I don't know anymore. read more

Extremely happy with my visit to Aveda. I've been to many salons spending 10x the price and would choose Aveda over all the other places!! If you have naturally curly hair, I would recommend Emma B. She did a fantastic job with my color and used a technique to reform my curls after my cut. It normally takes days for my curls to reshape/reform after being cut but the technique worked so well that my hair looked amazing. I plan to go back soon! read more

Oh nooo they totally botched my hair! (see pic of my "swoop"). I used to like it here and knew it would be a hit or miss since it is a school, but I've had FAR too many misses now. So I am done. Farewell Aveda and hello Sin Republic. It's definitely true you get what you pay for. p.s. I wasn't even going to write this review, but the instructor was mean and defensive and she made me feel terrible. Student was nice and I could forgive her, but for the instructor to be so insincere to a customer that's not very nice and definitely not the "Aveda" way. I love the Douglas J! I have come for various services including cut/color/mani/pedi everything. The prices are great, and tipping is not allowed so that also keeps the price down. Additionally, it's just hair. If a student gives a bad cut, it will grow out, it is how they learn. I know what I am signing up for going in. I have had an unintentionally asymmetrical haircut and wonky color. The school has always gone above and beyond to correct the situation. But... I did have to wear a lot of baseball caps for a few weeks. It is OK, how else can the students learn? It's just hair, it will grow back. Mani/Pedi time here is like a spa, I have never had a disappointing experience here. The only mildly problematic hing is that each pedicure is one color only. I am fond of multi color toenails. I recommend the Douglas J for routine cuts and hair maintenance. Just be aware that these people are learning. Be kind, especially when you get to be a "learning experience" for them. read more

Aveda has great availability during the week - I was able to call at 12:55 and get a haircut appointment for 1:30. Then my stylist took me back at 1:20. I showed her a picture of my last cut and asked her to trim it a bit longer, but to stay above shoulder length. She did a nice job throwing in some layers and trimming a few inches. Her teacher ended up evening up the right side, which was longer than the left - but that's why it's a teaching salon. The appointment took an hour and a half for a very basic trim, which was longer than I'd counted on. But I left with a fresh cut! Pros: availability, teachers overseeing the work done, students may be slow but it's because they are being meticulous, affordable prices Cons: plan for a cut to take longer, my hair was not as short as I wanted it (I told the teacher, she offered to have it fixed, but I declined because I was out of time and I was happy with the new length) read more

My stylist was absolutely sweet and diligent--she was so thoughtful and clearly tried super hard. But this was the worst haircut of my life. One side of my head is a full inch longer than the other side, my layers are erratic and look like Legos, and I feel like I can't go out in public. An instructor even checked it TWICE and didn't seem to find any major issues wth it despite it looking like my toddler cut it with craft scissors, which is outrageous both for my head and for the sake of this stylist's education. People have some pretty negative things to say about this place, but I've been 10+ times at this point and never left feeling like anyone completely ruined my hair. I go for very basic haircuts and all over color and it always turns out fine. They are students, so if you're going for a balayage or something more tedious I think it is important to be conscious of the fact that of course it is not going to compare to what an experienced stylist could provide you, this is why you pay less. It does take longer as they are students and they have to check in with instructors periodically, but if you have time to spare it's a fun environment with good music and refreshments. read more

This place is so hot or miss really. That is what you get with students I guess. I generally just get a basic overall color so it's fine. The one time I tried something new they totally messed up & since then I haven't been too thrilled with my hair. I tried to go lighter & I think the student mixed wrong so it didn't work. I ended up with hot roots and the next time I got my hair done I felt it still looked lighter around my crown so I just ended up going darker. Completely opposite of what I really want. At least other people seem to think the darker color is good on me. Something I think is odd is when an instructor told the student how to thin my hair & then walked away without watching the student to make sure she understood what to do. There can be some unfriendly receptionists at the front desk so watch out! Also, you can get some not so good students & you can get some fantastic students. Be warned if you go it may take a lot more time then an established stylist. Remember they are still learning. read more

I've come here several times over the years for services, including color, cut, nails, and massage. I recommend sticking with a basic haircut or one color process. I wouldn't recommend you try anything new or fancy- stick with that you know. The students working on you are just that-students. They are still learning and their work during your appointment will be checked several times by a teacher. An appointment here takes way longer than your typical hair appointment because as students they are going a little bit slower and again, a teacher checks their work throughout the session. If you know what you want, be really clear in describing it because the teacher can direct them in what to do, if needed. Also, because they are students and some of them are young, you may have a situation or two during a visit that isn't the most professional. Example: when I had my nails done here once the students gabbed on and on about a bar they went to the night before and how tired and hung over they all were. But on the plus side, this is an Aveda salon school so you still get their wonderfully smelling, all natural products and the heavenly scalp massage during your visit!!! Ahhhhhh! read more

She was paying attention, checking if the style of cut is what I meant, and instead of just telling her instructor she was done- she told her instructor she felt something was missing and asked for advice. She learned a couple tricks with deceiving thick hair like mine. I could tell she liked what she was doing and wanted to excel. Probably ended up being one of the top 5 favorite haircuts I've had. Going into this, I guess I should have realized that this is a school with students providing the services, so I shouldn't have expected too much...but the prices would make you think otherwise. Starting from the beginning...girls at the reception desk were very nice, attentive and offered me water, tea, or coffee right away. I actually came in carrying a coffee and she asked if she could warm it up for me. I thought that was exceptionally nice. I was here with a wedding party group, and all (6) of us started on time...we were getting manicures and pedicures. $25 and $35, respectively. I was given a hot neck wrap right away, that was wonderful. And the girl doing my nails was SO NICE, as was the supervisor in the room. However, the girl doing my nails said she was only 3 months away from graduating, and she did a pretty poor job on my manicure. Yes, I have short nails, but even I could have done a better job with my left hand than she did. And yes, you get the bottle of polish you select, but you almost HAVE to given the ridiculous price (salon prices for that quality!? never again) AND because you have to touch up your nails yourself. I think mine only lasted a day before they started to chip. And they are no longer use OPI but an off-brand "Vegan" polish called Sparitual (I've never heard of it) and the color selection was very poor. I also did not like how there were students sitting next to me during my manicure giving each other manicures and gossiping about other girls who worked there. It ruined the relaxing environment and made me glad they weren't the ones doing my mani. My pedicure was much better and definitely "salon quality," though the polish was still a little rough. The chairs are comfy and it was very relaxing pedicure. My last "Eh" about the whole experience was that my 2 services alone took 2 1/2 HOURS! I'm not kidding...my appointment started at 10:30 and I didn't leave there until 1pm....and there was no wait for a pedicure chair after my manicure and I didn't wait around for the other girls to be done...it was 2 1/2 hours for just a mani and pedi. Would I go back here again? ONLY if they lowered the prices (the place might not be as nice but I can get a much better mani/pedi for $25 total somewhere else) and if they made it known how long it was going to take... read more

I've been to Aveda 3 times now: twice for haircuts and once for a balayage. I've never had a bad experience and felt that the students were very friendly, professional, and talented. I will say that being assigned to a student randomly when you make an appointment can be anxiety-inducing. I recommend that you search the school's location tag on Instagram and scroll through to find specific students. Many of Aveda's students make Instagram accounts to showcase their stylist skills, and you can find someone you feel confident in a lot more easily this way. When I had my balayage done, I searched their insta geotag until I found a student who was proficient in this style and requested her by name when I made the appointment. But again, they are students and you shouldn't expect the best cut of your life when walking in. However, I've only had good experiences. It's a good deal and it feels nice knowing you're helping someone else learn. read more

I have been going to Douglas J Aveda Institutes for years now. I have never once gotten a disastrous haircut. I primarily just go for cuts but have also had a manicure, which honestly I felt was overpriced, even including a bottle of polish. There are, however, major things to be aware of or keep in mind before you decide to go to Douglas J instead of a regular salon. I have rarely been in for a haircut (just a haircut, no color, no major style change) and been out in less than 1.5 hours. Usually it is around 1.5-2 hours, but this location is less busy than the Royal Oak location and tends to be around the lower end for me. That is the norm, plan for it. I have learned to expect this, which lowers my irritation at the slow pace of the cut. I do, however, hate when my appointment begins very late! That has only happened maybe twice, though. It's a $16 haircut (no tipping allowed) performed by students. It won't be perfect, but there are instructors to correct. If you are unhappy with what your stylist is doing, by god just say something. The student won't learn if they think you're happy when you're not. I have had socially awkward students and just plain stupid people (getting a brush stuck in my fine, straight hair? Really?) but overall good experiences with motivated and friendly people. I do recommend asking questions when booking if you are not sure about what you are getting. I have had snafus with making a reservation and not getting what I wanted. Double check that the service you want is what you're truly going to get. Overall, I recommend it. I would personally not do a major style change there, but that's just me. It's a great way to save money on a trim while using amazing Aveda products. Just plan on it taking a long time (at the very least double what it takes at your salon), don't be afraid to vocalize if you are unsatisfied, and remember that they are students and you get what you pay for. Went in to get my hair dyed and then told me what i wanted was a "no-go" and offered my a conditioning treatment for the inconvenience. I asked if they could just dye my hair a solid color and then said they couldn't match my naturally hair color. The student who blow dried and cut my hair, clearly is not capable of managing curly hair, did everything you're NOT supposed to do when blow drying already frizzy hair. He didn't even bother to make sure my baby hairs were straight either, he saw that they were curled and frizzy and left it as is ???? and when his supervisor came over she didn't correct what was clearly a hot mess. I have gone to this student salon a few times and I've become more and more impressed with each visit. I've visited many other schools in the area and this one is by far the best. I first visited this institute while attending Grand Valley and have since moved to Holland, but I still make the drive out when I can! The students and professors conduct themselves in a way that makes you feel welcomed, listened to, and satisfied. This institute is much more professional and clean than any others I've visited. I forget I'm even in a student salon until I see how cheap my bill is! Today I went in to get bayalage highlights and I was a little nervous at first because I wasn't sure how much experience a student would have with this method. I was SO wrong though - Summer was absolutely amazing. She is a natural and I was so bummed when I remembered that tips aren't allowed. She spent 5 hours working on my hair and making it beautiful! She was so patient and kind. I never would have guessed she wasn't certified yet! Well, before i begin let me say, im about as picky as they come. I spent a long time trying to figure out where to get my hair done for prom last year, so that it would turn out classy and not like one of those tacky piled pin curl things. Pretty much anywhere i go is somewhat pricey - more so because i have long and very thick hair. I thought Douglas J's pricing was fair and they seemed reputable so i called an appointment in a few weeks ahead of time. I scheduled it EARLY in the day because i knew it was a school. (um,duh).. I really loved the atmosphere when i walked in, and while we were waiting they brought us hot tea. When we asked if they might be able to squeeze us in for a make up app. before hand, they did. The girl was set on blue eyeshadow, even though i told her i like naturals. But she was nice and seemed knowledgeable so i let it go. I was a little thrown off by the bright color when i looked in the mirror, but she assured me it would fade, and that the make up would be good for pictures. When i sat down for my hair, they decided it would be a lengthy job so they assigned a few girls, who would help each other. I really liked their instructor. I showed them a few pictures of the chic side bun i was hoping for and they went at it. Curling my hair lightly and gathering it perfectly. When i explained that i wanted volume on top the girls teased it just a bit and the instructor shaped it perfectly - no frizz or snarls or Snooki issues. A couple hours, and a gazillion bobby pins later, it was finished. and i was really really happy. It had such good shape and hold and looked beautiful when i secured a small orchid in it. When all was said and done, it was a bit pricey, but i think i felt that way because of the make up, which i could have done myself. Any way, i rubbed off a tiny bit of the eyeshadow and neutralized it and it looked great - not clownish. the pictures did turn out really good. I went to Prom with the guy i broke up with two days before and he was a total jerk and made it awful! he ignored me, and it was at his school so i danced with total strangers. The only thing i loved about the night was the way i looked. I didn't have to worry about my hair getting loose or my make up smearing and even after hours of dancing, getting sweaty, and tearing up on the patio, i still looked nice. I got home feeling awful and just collapsed into bed. I woke up to still perfect hair - i was able to leave it for another day. Its been almost a year since then, which blows me away, and although at the end of this month, ill be visiting them for Prom hair again, im considering an appointment before hand, where im going to go ALL out. A Cut, a Malibu treatment, Double process color, and eyebrow color. I plan on spending close to $200 maybe? which, if done well, will be more than worth it. I can't wait. read more

I've gone to some pretty low-rent cosmetology schools in other areas and walked out with great results - for just a few bucks. So, if I got a great $8 manicure in a dumpy strip-mall cosmetology school, you'd think a $24 manicure from an upscale-looking joint downtown would be pro level, right? Wrong. The manicure I got at Douglas J. was quite literally the worst manicure I've ever had in my life. I am including the paint jobs I have gotten from 10 year old girls while babysitting in this tally. Ok, you might be thinking, "they're students - cut them some slack." That's the worst part - I can't even blame the student since the instructor's method of dealing with the mess was to look at my hands - color smudged all over, cotton strands in the wet polish, and pieces of fingernail that hadn't been filed into any discernible shape other than "sharp" - and ask me while the student sat there looking at me, "Did her work meet your expectations?" Ummmm... how about if YOU set the expectations instead of awkwardly forcing clients into it? (I'll also point out that the student was super nice, as was everyone at the front desk. If these rating were for personality, they'd get 5 stars. But...) It should have been pretty clear to the instructor that the manicure would not meet anyone's expectations. I would be funny and say "This manicure would only meet the expectations of Ray Charles or David Patterson," but did I mention that in addition to looking like crap, my nails were also filed to be brutally sharp? I can't comment on the skill level of every student, and I'm sure many people there do a great job. My rating is based less on the incompetence of the student, and more on the instructor not even trying to point the student in the right direction, while charging practically salon prices for the "service" after forcing the client to critique the student's work. For $24 I probably could have gone to a "real" salon. The only upside was that they let you keep the bottle of polish - which was more of a necessity than a bonus, since I had to do my own touch ups in the car before going to work. read more

A friend recommended this place to me and I thought I'd check it out. I was very pleased. The students were very professional. Since it was my first time, I was given a tour. It's a very neat old building that has been converted and was very clean and nice. My hair cut and blow dry was only $16 and you can't tip. I hate parking downtown so I was a bit concerned about that but there is a parking garage right across the street so that was convenient and it only cost me $5. I had a fine experience here, but I'm rather easy going in my hair cuts. I don't do color and I pretty much want a basic cut. The girls are very nice. After reading the filtered review from a girl who went to school there a lot of stuff made more sense, and I think you should think twice about going here for your wedding up-do! I have several friends who went with me and at different times because we were offered a free service and everyone was quite happy with their hair cuts and color. It did take a bit of time, but there was a lot to watch while my hair was being cut so I never felt bored. Also, it was free. I sometimes don't understand the lack of common sense when someone goes to a beauty school and expects it to be like a 5 star salon. I must say I was a little surprised the girl who cut my hair was about to graduate in a few weeks, the instructor had to do my bangs and put in a few more layers. I would expect someone who could soon go out on their own to be more advanced, maybe real life experience is what makes a stylist so good. I did buy the shampoo and conditioner on my first visit because it smells lovely, and although it was crazy expensive, I never would have bought it if I wasn't offered free future services for the same amount. So now I will go back for a pedicure and get to keep a $10 bottle of nail polish. I can't imagine complaining so much about a pedicure like the other reviews do, so I hope it's not as bad as they have led me to believe it might be. I could always repaint on my own in the end. What a great place! Everyone is so happy, upbeat, and empowered. These students really love their industry. Because it's a school it's crazy inexpensive, I so wanted to leave a massive tip...which is not allowed. I booked an appointment seeking anyone available, and jumped right in wanting two-process color and a "whatever you think" cut and style. Put myself in Cassandra Ferris' hands and relaxed completely. I left with a sleek, shiny new do, an amazingly layered purple sheen, and a much better attitude about life. Everyone needs to start their weekend like this! read more

Unfortunately, I have had an bad experience with one educator and guest services, which resulted in unexpected charges and when I questioned the charges after the visit, the response was, "Oh well, you have to pay this amount." Just got my hair done by Courtney, who was so so nice! I felt like she was being a little bit timid to chop my hair because I wanted a lot off of some layers. She had an experienced instructor named Lacie who came and showed Courtney some different techniques to give me the style I wanted. Lacie cut most of my hair and cut it exactly the way I wanted it! It's not that Courtney did a bad job, she's still a learning student so it was nice that and instructor came to me. The only thing that upsets me is that I told the student that I had just recently gotten my ear (Cartilage) pierced. She was okay about working around my ear to avoid hitting it, but still there were times where she would accidentally bump it pretty hard which was not a fun feeling. Long story short, I came out ad Aveda with a fabulous new haircut, but no earring! My new earring got ripped out during the haircut and I'm pretty upset about that. I recommend going to Aveda salon even if you are a bit nervous or anxious because of the wonderful services I received, from the kind ladies at the reception desk to my stylist. I just wish this incident didn't happen, otherwise I'd give it 5 stars. read more

Yesterday was the second time that I left the Grand Rapids Aveda extremely disappointed. In October, I went in for an appointment to have my blonde hair dyed to strawberry blonde. After 6 hours of the student working on me, and two failed attempts, I left with a mousey brown color. I decided to give the salon the benefit of the doubt and went in last night to have my hair dyed back to platinum. A color treatment I am well familiar with, having had it performed on my hair numerous times. The instructor in charge of my student refused to perform it because he didn't want to harm the "integrity" of my hair. All due respect, I am not getting my hair bleached for the health of it. I requested the style because I have loved it in the past, and accept the fact that it can be damaging. Today another salon was able to achieve the color and style I had requested. I understand that you are trying to provide lessons to your students on quality hair service. Consider then, that part of a quality experience is giving the customer what they ask for. I travel roughly two hours, both ways, from Kalamazoo to this location. I've been getting my hair done at Aveda schools for the past six years and have been spoiled by consistently AWESOME experiences. However, given my really unsatisfactory recent visits to Grand Rapids, I will not be repeating the trip.
