A California Historical Landmark, this location was occupied since at least 500 B.C. by the Tongva. Almost paved over, this beautiful spot with fresh water springs has been preserved through a non-profit foundation and is technically on the campus of Universtiy High School within LAUSD. This is a common response, unfortunately, as the existence of the descendants of the Native American peoples still living in LA County is often forgotten or intentionally ignored. All Angelenos should visit these Springs. Free admission, ample free parking in the lot as well as street parking. Very highly recommended.

I'd read that they'd opened to the public, but didn't know the details of when they were open / what services are available, etc. Dear Hubby spotted an item in the paper that they were hosting an open house day for several hours on a Sunday afternoon. We decided to go check it out after the football game. Timing was perfect, and the day was lovely. The parking lot was full, but we found a spot. A short walk later, we came to a host stand with a volunteer dispensing information, and requesting that we register. A $5 donation was requested. Docents were stationed in the visitor center, the milk barn, and the workshop area which houses tractors and other work vehicles. In the visitor center, various displays and informational boards describe the life, times, and Hollywood career of Joel and Frances McCrea. A short film also shows in the visitor center. They have these open house events several times throughout the year. In the summertime they offer outdoor movies. The setting is very peaceful, at the base of the hills. Various outbuildings around the property show how the ranch was a working one; not just for show. It seems that the McCreas worked in order to enjoy their life on the ranch, and not the other way around. They'd long intended to donate the property to the Conejo Park & Rec Department to benefit the public, and preserve the land. Great choice!

However, these hours are contingent on the gardener, who may not show up or may come late / leave early. I emailed at the start of the week when I wanted to come but heard back the following week. Turns out the gardener had car trouble so the garden was closed the previous week. The owner did email me back again letting me know the garden would be open the following week, which was nice of her. So, if you're driving from afar, reach out to confirm. Don't come at the last minute just in case the gardener leaves early. It's not the easiest to access but hey, this is a private home and we're lucky to have any access to it. This is interesting for anyone who loves folk art, mosaics, outsider art, etc. It's a large space with a lot to look at. No photography is allowed. Parking is on the street. The streets are narrow and hilly but there should be available parking within a reasonable distance.
