My experience at The Sanctuary was difficult and amazing in the most nurturing and healing way. Like all parents, I love my daughter. But after years of her holding grudges, blaming others for her problems, not being accountable and generally becoming a "hater", I didn't like her very much, and I did not enjoy spending time with her. I tried so many things to help her move beyond her rage. Over a period of 6 years I tried counseling, psychiatry, a mentor, church youth group, supplements, prescription drugs and a thousand heart to heart talks, all to no avail. I thought I was going to have to turn her loose and pray. Then I discovered The Sanctuary. Their mind-body-spirit approach mixes traditional western medicine with native shamanic teachings. I had a hard time believing such a place was possible to go to when I was at my worst--in the depths of depression is an understatement! I found a place with strong clinical practices, and, with shamanic-based Healing of mind and body?!?! And....they put into practice the teachings of Dr. Joe Dispenza and Gregg Braden/Heartmath?!?! I was treated with respect from the very first moment I arrived at The Sanctuary and guided to my room! As I sat at the dinner table that night in circle with clients and staff, I was welcomed with food to nourish the mind, body, and Spirit. Sugar free, dairy free, and gluten free feeds the essential lobes of the brain, leaving the fight-or-flight lobes starving. Dean, the founder, welcomed me with a handshake and genuine smile and eye contact at dinner, not disclosing who he was, for we were all treated equally at dinner. Later that night, I was welcomed in ceremony, around the fire, with other staff and clients. The Healing that takes place goes way beyond any other centers I have heard of. It's challenging to put into words how profoundly my time at The Sanctuary has assisted me in my healing process. When I chose The Sanctuary for their holistic approach to trauma and addiction treatment, it was my third time to opt for an inpatient setting for myself. In other words, not my first rodeo. I chose The Sanctuary specifically for two reasons: one- it was non-12 step. Two- their focus was at least dual in nature, addressing not only the addicted brain, but also the trauma underlying the behavior. From the moment that I cried watching some of the videos of prior clients to the moment I was picked up by my partner after a 30 day stay, I knew in my heart that I had made the right choice for myself. The staff are unique in their shamanic approach and their own stories. Some have a very personal experience with trauma and addiction, while others are there to share and guide via their spiritual practices. Neuroplasticity is key, as well as science generally (new discoveries are incorporated into the education and group sessions), and equally important is the attention to soul and heart. The importance of literally feeding the body with wholesome, organic and non-inflammatory food is another key element at The Sanctuary, and the weekly sessions about how food and the gut biome affect the brain were some of the most illuminating I was privileged to experience while there. The Sanctuary at Sedona is a unique healing facility that is unmatched by any in the industry - certainly far superior to the numerous treatment facilities I attended over a ten year period. I had a three month stay at the Sanctuary four and a half years ago - a time when I felt entirely hopeless and ready to give up on life and recovery all together. I walked through the doors broken, physically knocking on deaths door, and mentally psychotic, but, I walked out of the doors having grown a new body, mind, connection to spirituality and most of all, stepped into right relationship with my true nature. For the first time in my life, I had a sense of purpose, peace of mind, and I felt genuine love for myself. Prior to the Sanctuary, I attended infinite 12 step programs, mental health facilities, co-concurrent rehabs, after care programs, a wilderness therapy program, a few alternative healing programs and many years of therapy and psychiatry. Although I had learned a lot of valuable lessons from these other programs, I could not stay sober, and, I struggled to maintain a positive outlook on life. Today I am sober! Moreover, I am happy, I have found my calling in life, take pride in my work, find the beauty in everything, have managed to shift my perspective, especially when faced with difficult situations, and, when I do have setbacks or times of struggle, I have the tools to quickly get back into balance. At the Sanctuary, I learned sustainable healthy routines, such as diet, supplement regiments, meditation, journeying, breath work, daily intention settings, and many spiritual practices that I still integrate daily. These routines form the framework for the life that I create on a daily basis. I am filled with hope, trust, joy, and most significantly, the world continually opens many doors and opportunities to expand my life and passion. I have recovered from drugs and alcohol and write my own story. Life doesn't happen to me anymore, I create what I want it to look like! What makes the Sanctuary so unique is that the program is entirely individualized to the clients needs. The team assesses what the client requires to heal and their daily customized schedule - which always incorporates multiple individual sessions - reflects that. If a client requires a form of healing not offered by a regular staff member or practitioner, the team will outsource it immediately. For example, a big part of my wounding was sexual trauma, and they brought in a tantric shaman to work with me on this deep rooted wound. This, coupled with body work, yoga, meditation, breath work, shamanic healing sessions, etc... was what allowed me to heal the deep wounding of my past, even memories I had blacked out, so that I could be free and take ownership over my body. My experience at the Sanctuary began in June 2017. The initial contact with the office offsite staff was a bit rocky however once I arrived at the Sanctuary I felt safe and protected from the moment I stepped out of the car. This was definitely the lowest time in my life and was in such bad shape both physically and mentally that I truly felt no one could help me out of the hell I was living. I found out immediately just how wrong that was. Every individual I was connected with for sessions or activities was compassionate, kind, understanding and most importantly patient. At no time was I pushed to do anything I resisted. The technique of allowing me the decision about any situation was a true blessing. I never felt strong armed or threatened or intimidated by anyone at the Sanctuary. There is plenty of solitary time however you never feel alone or deserted. I just returned from the Sanctuary where I celebrated my one year sobriety on June 14, 2018. The Sanctuary is a magical serene place and the fact it is remote to me is part of the healing. If you want to dig deep and hard within yourself it is the place to go. Yes you do the hard work however the people working with you at Sanctuary are always by your side. I went to the Sanctuary at the lowest point in my life, I had tried and failed to get help with other mental health providers so my husband and I decided to try an inpatient facility. To be honest, we were misled from the start. We were led to believe there was a waiting list to be accepted for treatment, however during my stay there, it was common for there to be empty rooms. so this was untrue. The facility itself is extremely remote and difficult to access. When I asked whether I could contact my husband, I was challenged by the director who asked if I wanted to get well. This attitude continued throughout my stay and made me extremely fearful. I was asked to provide them with my car keys and when I asked if he wanted my phone as well, he told me that would be a good idea. When my husband tried to contact me about a business issue, I was led to believe there was an ulterior motive behind his call. This called my great concern. One of the reasons I went to the Sanctuary was is promised individualized care. However I found that everyone was treated with the same cookie cutter methods. We all had to do the same homework, including writing about how our life was like a river, and also writing about 3 of our ancestors who we made contact with during an individual session. The Shamanic format was the same for all clients. I am a Christian and even though I participated in all activities I found the Shamanism troubling and still don't understand how my blowing on a rock was supposed to take away my problems. Also how Tarot card could provide answers that i couldnn't find in the Bible. During the time I was there, no one had any family visit them, although I later found out that there were set visiting hours. Family involvement was not encouraged, until it was almost time to leave, then it became important. At about week two I expressed concern about how going home would work, I was told "you don't need to worry about that today"/ This concern was not addressed and I did worry about it ...24/7. In the final week, I was told that if my husband didn't come to family counseling I needed to stay longer. So I pressured him into coming to the Sanctuary, which brings up another couple issues. I was told by the director,"Your husband sent you here to get fixed, but he isn't going to like the fixing"/ What was that supposed to mean? I had let it be known that even though my husband and I had problems I loved him and wanted to go home to him. No contact was made to my husband by any personnel of the Sanctuary. When my husband called and told the director that he needed to have surgery, he was accused of trying to manipulate me in some way and that he was "conveniently" having the surgery now. I was also told that this was suspect and that I needed to stay at the Sanctuary for my full 30 days. Again , I called my husband and pressure him into coming, even though it was against the surgeons order. And for what... 2 hours of family counseling that could have been done at any other time. Anyone who is thinking of getting help at the Sanctuary at Sedona, needs to be aware that all is not like it seems. The staff that are listed on the website are not all present and I question if they are really available at all. The director who would like you to believe is loving and caring is anything but, he is egotistical and rules through intimidation. There is no follow up care arranged by them and no further contact by them has ever been made. Be careful. read more

It has been 4 1/2 years since I first reached out to The Sanctuary for help. At the time I had been injecting heroin for the better part of 10 years with a few brief glimpses of freedom through attempts on my own and with other centers. I was attracted to The Sanctuary from the moment I called. It was coming up on Christmas and I had been calling a lot of other centers trying to get a feel for what was available. Everywhere I had called seemed to have the same set of routine questions that felt rather impersonal. It was when I spoke with Dean at The Sanctuary that I finally felt like I was being heard by another human being. I was completely miserable and really feeling like this attempt was my last hope, I felt like I did not have enough energy left to keep fighting to stay alive. Dean's words of hope helped me carry myself to The Sanctuary, where I immediately felt welcomed and that I did not have to hide my pain anymore. My time at The Sanctuary was not easy, detoxing from heroin was an obstacle of its own. During this time I was not sleeping a lot, which is normal for anyone going through this. I was tired physically and emotionally, and without any substances to zone out with, a lot of emotions were arising that were difficult to allow. The staff and the other clients that were there with me helped me in ways that go beyond words during this delicate time in my life. I thought I just needed to interrupt my drug abuse and all of my troubles would disappear. Personally I found this not to be the case. For me, using heroin was a complex pattern of behavior that I got really stuck in. On one side of it, there is the physiological addiction, in that if I didn't have my fix I was guaranteed to get really sick. Another side, which was maybe less obvious to me at the time, was that I was using heroin amongst other drugs to avoid feeling. I had been doing this for the greater part of my life, any time there was any emotional state that I found to be unbearable or unpleasant, I could use substances to change the state to something I preferred. This really began to backfire when my life began to collapse around me as a result of my carelessness and selfishness during my heavy drug using days. Getting high to me was more important than my family, my friends, my future, etc. It came to the point for me where all else was secondary, and I was getting high also to attempt to hide from the guilt and shame and anger towards myself for that, hence the cycle I was stuck in. The cycle I had been stuck was successfully broken with the help of the people at The Sanctuary because for the first time I had been to a treatment center, the focus was much deeper than the behavior itself. I have been to multiple other treatment centers where during my stay the majority of the time was spent talking about getting high and reasons why I should not get high, and it all misses the point. The fear based approach has not worked for me, in nearly any context in my life. All of the most logical reasoning goes right out the window in a moment of severe suffering that feels inescapable. I have witnessed this over and over again for myself, and it is why I feel like learning how to feel is what helped me so much at The Sanctuary. There was trauma in my past and patterns of thinking that I had been conditioned to perpetuate that were addressed at The Sanctuary. Bringing awareness into the patterns of the mind and helping me get comfortable to be able to be in the body and feel what is happening in there, no matter how difficult of an emotional state it seems to be, are gifts that last forever. There is a maximum of 9 clients at a time which creates an intimate setting. The staff helped masterfully to help create cohesion not only within the group, but within the community of staff and clients that were living there at the time. To me it felt like a community of people who were kind and compassionate with each other, encouraging each other to grow as people and to see the beauty of life. I felt loved and supported the whole time. These people truly care about what they are doing. What I wanted from The Sanctuary is not what I got, which if you hear me out, is a really good thing. I wanted someone else, or a group of people to fix all of my problems. At The Sanctuary I was empowered to take my life into my own hands, and given a practical approach to doing so, and inspired to do so by the staff who are living it. I would say that since leaving The Sanctuary I have had some of the best moments of my life, and some of the most challenging moments of my life. The difference for me is that I have not felt at all like it has been anything I cannot handle and I have not felt the need to run or hide from anything at all. Very disappointed in my stay there. The staff on the website was not the staff on-site, and those that were there were so busy with their own agendas--be they personal/spiritual growth, health, visiting family, teaching elsewhere, etc.--that we were left with too few staff or interim staff who didn't know the program. I think my biggest disappointment was that I had been promised before arriving that if it did not feel like it was the appropriate place for me they would help me find and get to a more appropriate facility. When I told them that I was not happy there, I was told to find another place and they would help me make arrangements. I was looking for insider information based on their experience in the industry, not a suggestion that I get busy on my laptop and let them know when I decided. read more
