Worst experience ever. The waitress was nice but she got our order wrong and was being is random food. She also charged us for three kids quesadillas when we ordered 2 and when I told her she says she charged us 3 because we had three kids (one is a 4month old that we clearly didn't order a quesadilla for) That's no excuse. My brother asked her for a receipt and she handed him a blank piece of paper. The lady behind the counter was extremely rude and told us that we sat down when there was a 20 min wait so therefore we threw them off. She had actually told us to sit where we wanted to and told the same thing to the family behind us. The restaurant was not busy at all and it had open tables. With a sign that said please sit yourself. It felt like it was just an excuse for the huge mess up on their part but it wasn't our fault. The food was absolutely amazing, the prawn tacos were huge and so flavorful. And to top it off they had live music! On a Monday night it was amazing. I've come here for lunch about 4-5 times in the last 3 years which was when we discovered this cute little beach town. The food is awesome. I usually get the coconut shrimp, and my kid devours the fries. I almost always order take out to enjoy the view outside while we eat. There used to be a gentleman at the window/door to take orders during COVID. He was super nice, food would come out fast! Then about two months ago we decided to dine inside the restaurant and I kid you not, we waited and stood at the front for at least 15 minutes. There were two waitresses, none that acknowledged the crowd standing right in front of them while they engaged in casual conversations with some customers at the bar. So finally we ALL left. I went back last weekend 4/23/22 for take out to give it another chance and because it was take out it shouldn't be an issue, i thought wrong because the SAME thing happened AGAIN. There was a family in front of me and they said they had been waiting a while and there she was, same waitress. She hadn't even looked our way until I asked the bartender what was up, and he assured me she would be with us as soon as she could. I asked for a beer and he found it in his heart to take my order when before he said he wasn't taking orders but whatever. Food came out fast. The family and others were still waiting to be seated. It's unfortunate I have to write this review because I love the food and the location. Two stars for the cooks, negative stars for the waitresses. By far the worst food I've had in Capitola. The clam chowder was cold, watery and tasteless. My shrimp tacos were ok, but very dry and I love sauces. My fiance ordered the calamari and fries and the calamari was rubbery. The best thing we had were the garlic fries. My guava mimosa was also watered down. We were impressed with their clam chowder bread bowl. Although it's not that big, it tasted DELICIOUS! One of the best I've tried in the county. Don't come here if you don't want to wait for your food for about an hour. There was only one chef on duty when we got here. Although they told us beforehand that it will take half an hour, it took them for over an hour. The good part of waiting was the nice view overlooking the beach and the colorful structures. We got the Salmon Benedict and Crab Cake Benedict which was good but kind of bland. We had to season it ourselves. Fish and chips was really fresh and flavor of the batter was good. I have never been a victim of racial profiling, sadly there is a first time for everything. A group of friends and I ended up at The Sandbar for a few drinks before heading home. The environment was nice, we were enjoying ourselves and made friends with the other couple sitting at the bar. Loud music was playing and the couple next to us got up and started to dance. Me and my girlfriend sat and sipped our drinks and started cheering this couple on, we were having a great time. The music was loud, the drinks were good and the night was young. Suddenly our good time was interrupted by a jarring sound. It was a mans voice, it was the bartenders voice, I don't remember his name but he was an older balding white man, he was yelling, "YOU GUYS NEED TO CALM DOWN, YOU ARE BEING DISRESPECTFUL TO EVERYONE THAT IS EATING HERE " I was shocked, embarrassed and honestly a bit confused... I thought that the loud dance music warranted that this was a place to have fun. As I was about to apologize, he continued, " I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU PEOPLE ARE FROM BUT THIS IS CAPITOLA AND YOU CAN'T ACT LIKE THAT HERE, THIS IS CAPITOLA. " By this point I was just outright offended, I replied, " With all due respect sir, we were just having a good time, I don't know why you would play such a loud music if you didn't want people to dance and enjoy themselves. My husband is a DJ and usually when he plays music at a bar, people are allowed to dance and have fun..." His response, "Well maybe that's why your husband isn't here with you because you act like that. " I have honestly never been treated this bad in an establishment, mind you he said nothing to the two white girls that were dancing and having fun, I really feel it was a race issue. If you have flexible schedule and just wanna chill and enjoy the nice view, this place is for you! BUT if you're trying to grab a quick meal by the sea and go, THIS IS NOT YOUR PLACE TO BE. We were warned that it'll be about 20-30mins wait for food since they only have 1 chef on duty, but we ended up waiting more than an hour from waiting for our orders to be taken to serving our food! My experience here ruined my day. I saw the happy hour menu and saw good prices on fish and chips and mahi mahi tacos. I went to the beach area behind the restaurant with my husband and four children (including a two month old baby). We had so much beach stuff I figured we could just order and walk over to pick up food to eat at our spot. Little did I know the price wasn't applied to dining out. Instead of a $25 bill my husband paid $60. I rarely do happy hour so how am I supposed to know especially when it doesn't state on the menu board outside the restaurant. So when I called to put the order in he says we normally don't do take out. Where r u? I say here at the beach. He then says ok we do could do that for you. After my husband tells me it came out to $60 I was outraged!! Thats more then half the price I expected!! If he knew I was at the beach then why didn't he say over the phone my order of fish and chips and mahi mahi tacos would not be happy hour prices. I just know he purposely didn't tell us. I did call the order in at 4:30pm and happy hour ends at 6pm. Obviously I would dine in if I knew that was the case. Pretty upset I call the restaurant back and he says well we did accommodate you by ordering food to go. And would have to charge regular prices..... If it was myself picking up the food I would've said forget it and walked out. Anyways thank you Sandbar for ruining our first trip to Capitola. Sitting in the warm sun at the waters edge over looking Capitola beach with it's iconic colorful houses , the Sandbar Restaurant offers an idyllic, relaxing casual dining experience. We came for brunch and was pleasantly greeted by their helpful cheerful waitress. We ordered up three dishes which were all pretty good, the best being the chicken and waffles. Next time I look forward to trying their crabcakes benedict and the blackened salmon benedict. We would be happy to come back here many times. I would give them five stars for the atmosphere and three stars for the food. read more

But if you want good food a solid Bloody Mary in a place with a local feel this is the place to be. Forecast: Cloudy but breezy warm Reality: Clear skies, warm sun, perfect weather We got super lucky and parked next to downtown in a 2 hour space-- perks of heading to the beach on an off-day. We walked towards downtown and I told the kids we could eat wherever- sit-down or take-out to the beach. After walking along Esplanade, we settled on trying The Sand Bar (TSB). It's along the main street where the Capitola Beach shores touch. Its neighbors are Pizza My Heart, Zelda's, Margaritaville, etc. The prices were reasonable and we were craving some good ol' American/seafood cuisine. Entering the bar, the interior was casual and super beachy. A few decorations and pics along the wall and wooden furniture stationed. However it was quite peculiar. No one was seated inside. An older gentleman welcomed us and told us to sit anywhere- inside or outside. Ah makes sense. We made our way to the outside patio where the whole view of Capitola Beach and Pier greeted us. About 6-8 customers were sitting outside and enjoying the warm sun and scenic view. Seating is cramped on the outside patio. We settled on sitting in the far right corner. My bro and his friends sat on a high table for 4, and I decided on sitting on a lone stool along a long communal table. View was A+. We ordered:Golden Calamari & Fries; Fish & Chips; Clam Chowder bowl; and Breakfast Burrito. Most entree prices hover around $10+ range. The calamari is a MUST if you are a Squidward fan. Both the calamari and fish came out fried in a crispy golden batter. The fries were decent, but the winners were the seafood. The batter was perfectly seasoned and breaded lightly. The savory taste of the chewy calamari was complemented well by the fried batter. Burrito was also huge with breakfast essentials packed into the toasty tortilla. Service was tolerable for one server-- he was basically manning the whole front of the house while there was a cook in the kitchen. He was super friendly and came by to ask how we were doing. Paying was easy and painless and we were satisfied with the prices. The server notified us that that very Weds night there was going to be live music and happy hour. How intriguing! Overall, our experience at The Sand Bar was super chill. Food was homely and lit. Don't expect fancy service or foods, you'd have to pay more for that in Capitola. I have been in here before love the food and drinks. My party of four sat on the patio in the back, great view of the beach. The server in the yellow button up shirt was not very friendly or attentive. We asked if we could move the umbrella when no one was sitting behind us or in the side of us. He said no I can't do that, it would have not effected anybody. We got our drink orders in those were right but we had to ask multiple times to get our water. Our group of 7 spontaneously invaded this lovely place on the afternoon of New Year's Eve and were quickly and kindly seated in a nice open space by very friendly servers. We were warned that service was a bit stretched and that we may be waiting a bit for food but that proved to be not the case! I waited for over an hour and was told by one of the workers "don't worry we didn't forget about you" as I watched other people order food after me and get their food before me. We had the clams and the shrimp ceviche. The clams were steamed in a simple garlic and very slight onion broth and served with real garlic sourdough toast. Absolutely wonderful! The shrimp ceviche was served with fresh avocado on top and marinated, once again, in a very simple broth which included fresh Roma tomatoes and a squeeze of lime. Tortilla chips were presented with the ceviche and the amount was sufficient to pair. Price point was good for quality and service. Great server. Would recommend.
