I'll be honest: Russell, Kansas, was not on my mental map of places to eat well. But fate (and…read moreYelp) intervened. Suddenly we were pushing open the door to Waudby's entering, notably, through the bar side, which felt charmingly unpretentious in a you-wouldn't-get-this-in-Manhattan sort of way. The space splits cleanly between lively bar energy and a quieter, separate dining room, which I deeply appreciated after hours on the road and approximately twelve internal monologues. Then, the food. Genuinely outstanding. I ordered the Philly, fully expecting road-trip decent, and instead received something delightful, indulgent, and as good as versions I've had in Pennsylvania neighborhoods where people argue loudly over sandwiches. But the true sleeper hit? The cornballs. Please, I beg you, do not pass on them. They are crispy, nostalgic, and perfect. The kind of globs of fried bliss you'll still be thinking about once you're home pretending to only eat salads. Waudby's is proof excellent food exists far beyond city zips, and I would absolutely return. If I find myself in Russell again, this is a mandatory stop. The waitress and servers were absolute sweeties. My friend adds: the homemade ranch dressing was so good, you could almost drink it.

What a great place to hang out. This is a local spot with street parking and a relaxed atmosphere…read more The decor reminds me of an Irish pub. They have lots of TV's to watch sports. We watched the U.S. playing in the FIFA game here on our visit. The service was very good. Staff was wonderful.

My wife and I visited the Sportsman Bar for Valentines day. The deal was two 12oz cuts of prime…read morerib, salad bar, four jumbo shrimp (two per person) and two single serving bottles of wine for $30. The prime rib was very good, the jumbo shrimp were about as big as I have ever seen and the salad bar is awesome. The salad bar was more of a pasta bar than salad as the usual accoutrement for salad wasn't there (croutons, cucumbers, bacon bits etc) but the homemade pasta selections were excellent. I had a crab bowtie pasta that was made with real crab rather than the fake stuff you would normally find in this part of the country. The prime rib was more medium than medium rare (I always order rare or medium rare) but had excellent flavor so no biggie. I had the hash browns and a fresh baked roll as well. All in all an excellent meal and a great value. There were a few other couples we were with who eat here religiously and they said everything else on the menu is just as tasty and excellent. The service was a tad slow but not enough to get upset about. They were a bit busy but not enough to explain the slower service. Anyway I'm being picky but the service and the medium steak is why I opted for four stars instead of five. I will most definitely go back and tell others that this place overall is great!
