This weekend, my wife and I were in Manchester for a wedding. Since we had spare time on Saturday afternoon, we looked for a place nearby for drinks and a bite to eat. The Shaskeen was exactly what we wanted. This little Irish bar in the heart of town was friendly, with cold drinks, and an excellent appetizer. Charming Irish pub located in the heart of downtown Manchester! Stellar draft selection including Mangers Irish cider, which I can never find on draft on at other bars. Elevated pub fare, including several vegetarian options, which is hard to come by in New Hampshire. My personal favorites are the grilled cheese and tomato bisque, stuffed mushrooms or the chicken (vegan tenders) caesar. Diverse music scene with live music going on the backroom every-time I've visited! Seeing nationally touring acts such as 'Amigo the Devil', 'Scissorfight' and 'Rah Digga' in such an intimate venue have been amazing! The service is always friendly and consistently efficient even on busy nights! I love when the bartenders add pictures on the top of our Guinness or Black Velvet using the Ripples drink printer machine, it makes each beer feel special and unique. Plus they do an Industry Night on Sunday nights which is half off for service industry folks, and is one of my favorite nights of the week to go there. read more

We came to The Shaskeen twice over the course of 3 days. I was in Manchester for work and my office was nearby. I had my fiancé and parents in tow (they came with me for an extended work trip). We first stopped in for lunch and the food was delicious bar food. The sidewinder fries are awesome! I had the grilled cheese with the soup of the day, which was tomato bisque, and it was amazing. The second time we came in, it was just my fiancé and me looking for a quick happy hour drink on my birthday. The bartender was a super friendly blonde girl, I wish I'd gotten her names. I attended a private event nearby and afterward met up at The Shaskeen with some family who live in the area. This is a very laid back Irish pub. Bar stools without backs at the bar. Bare wooden benches along the walls. Sturdy wooden tables. No frills. Lots of beers and a full bar. My SO was already at the bar with family when I arrived and we grabbed a table. A waitress stopped by to take an order and I (an another member of the party) got a burger as I had a long drive home and hadn't eaten yet that day. The burger is good. A large patty, well cooked with fresh lettuce and soft bun. It comes with fries on the side. Malt vinegar, salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup and napkins were placed on the table after we ordered My SO had already eaten before I arrived and said the fries accompanying his meal were different. I suggested they just cook whatever is in the freezer. :D He and some Uncles had ordered the Rueben. One of them was 'sent back' while the other two ate them but said they "weren't good." The bartender told them all the food is prepared 'as it is in Ireland'. When asked, my SO said it was 'boring'. Not the 'nice meat/sauce/sauerkraut combination you expect when biting into a Reuben'. The meat is cubed, not sliced or shredded which made the sandwich 'fall apart' and it was 'fatty'. Take that as you will. Parking is on street, some of which is pay at the kiosk and place the paid receipt on your dash, while other spots are 'free'. So be aware of where you are parked. Restrooms are in the back of the building and were clean. I enjoyed our visit here. Good beverages. Good food. Live Irish music during the end of the visit. Really, what's not to like? If I could rate ZERO stars, I would!! I went to an event at this location (from 4 hours away)... I was discriminated against for being neurodivergent. I was unfairly targeted and deemed "drunk" by ONE of FOUR security guards I had interacted with. (one was really cool & we had a plan for before the artist came in..) I digress. I could not comprehend who was talking to me and why, it was dark & loud; he had on a plain black tee shirt. I assumed he was some random man there for the show, meanwhile I'm there with my 6'5 husband. (I have seen how that ends) so I just wanted him away in all honesty. My brain (being neurodivergen) could not comprehend the situation. After being cut off (after two white claws and a half a glass of beer, in an over 2 hour span) I was deemed "too drunk" for the event. Meanwhile I was just extremely excited to see one of my favorite artist do his craft (again) & even carried around our photo from meeting him & dancing on stage with him, at the last concert of his I attended. SO, before writing a review I talked to my "normal" husband and gave the owner a chance.... After my husband told me he would handle it. He called MANY times, and finally got someone he could talk to.. He explained what had occurred & we got back "sorry you feel that way, they can kick anyone out they want to. The owner said no refunds!" the tickets were $42 for two people, out of an over $600 trip & 8 hours of travel time!! So they could have shoved that $42 up their ass!! (Doesn't even cover half a tank of gas!!).. So if you are neurodivergent, I would absolutely avoid this place!!!!!!! Had the owner simply said "I am so sorry you had that experience in my establishment; we don't agree with that behavior. Unfortunately we do not offer refunds" SOMETHING like that, I would not even be writing this. I would have just taken an L.. BUT they clearly do NOT care about people who suffer with mental health issues!! That is what was proven to me. NEVER again with this place!!! I will be taking this to social media to all of the neurodivergent groups in the area. Simply to make them aware as well. Maybe care more about training your staff, and there wouldn't have been an issue. "hey I'm with security, just making sure everything is ok over here?" it would have been completely different!!! Then I could have understood & simply said "oh yeah, we're good. Thank you" because I am respectful..... But this place is just trash!!! To the owner: you are a shitty person! & I stand on what I said. I have a video I made right after, clearly showing I was sober (but fighting back tears!!) dated and time stamped!!! Care about people & I wouldn't have had to do this! But now, I won't stop until everyone knows about this!!!!! I overthink everything & have time on my hands today!! Closer to looking like an Irish Bar than any other and popular with locals. One server was working the entire place and service was extremely slow, due to exactly that reason. However, the server did her very best, given the fact that no others were working the floor; on a Saturday evening. Burger & Mash Potato - Burger was a frozen patty, so that was a negative right off the bat. Therefore, the burger was overcooked, dry and sorely lacked flavour. The mash was bland and had to request butter (took 10 mins), salt and pepper to make it more palatable. Chicken sandwich & Fries - Chicken needed help with flavour and the fries were soggy, limp and dripping in oil. The first batch of fries were sent back and the replacement was just as bad. FYI: French Fries come with fast food and generally not served at a restaurant or bar. Conclusion, the likelihood of ever finding anything close to Irish is a lost cause. Here's a clue... Shaskeen is my favorite bar on all of Elm street. With weekly events and a wonderful bar staff, its no wonder that they get a lot of business. Crowd levels depend on the day and the event byt usually you can find a good spot to sit and stand to converse with other attendees. On July 2, hubs and I were strolling Elm St. hopping from one place to the next and Shaskeen caught our eyes. We were just coming in for a drink but ended up getting a highly suggested appetizer as well! Decor: Fun red Irish bar. Big barrels, benches, and wooden tables. It is a bit small in here but they did have outdoor seating as well. For being a divey-like place the bathrooms were pretty clean and speaking of the bathrooms, there is chalk paint and chalk provided to write notes! Like how cool is that? Wipe it down every few days/weeks and no worries about graffiti and having to repaint! Drinks: I got a vodka soda and it was perfectly balanced and refreshing on this hot day. Can't remember hubs but he was happy. Food: we opted for the fried cauliflower and OMG, general Gao meets veg and it is heaven! Sweet and Spicy, battered perfectly and just the right size for an app. Service: Olivia was the best! Just turned 21 and was going around bars on elm to find one I like and stopped in here to get a quick drink with a buddy and the bartender instantly turned me down saying that my ID "wasn't going to work here" indicating that it was fake. We attended an event at the pub. First, we were told to be there at 11 a.m, then told 11:30 am if we wanted to order "brunch." Stood in the rain behind a man trying to deliver fruit until 11:40 am, by which time the delivery man had decided to leave and had to be called back. Once inside, it was clear they were not ready at all. We were told to go to the back room. Then the bartender said, "Well, I guess not; you're going to be in the front for today." Then someone else said, "No, go to the back room." This yo-yo effect continued -- one person told us that a waiter would come to our table and take our food and drink orders and another person said, "No, you have to go to the bar to place your order." Forget about the quality of the drinks and food. "Brunch" was one item (looked like french toast), diet coke was watered down fizz; flatbread pizza and chicken tenders were frozen things of unknowable origin. Never going back. read more

I'm really sorry I won't be going to the Shaskeen again. I'd gone there many times with no issue but today was ridiculous. I went in, took a table in the empty restaurant and ordered a beer; the beer came but the waitress/bartender didn't come back. She was at the bar chatting merrily with one of two or three guys sitting there. I tried to get her attention to no avail. I finally called over to her that I was ready to order after waiting around 20 minutes. She came over; I tried to order but she 'didn't bring her device' She went to get it, I gave my order and she demanded my credit card. I said I have gone there many times and have never been asked to have the house hold my card; she said she's asking now. I was there two days earlier and that wasn't the policy and has never been the policy. I'm really disappointed by this; I like the Shaskeen. It is fairly authentic as Irish pubs go. But I won't be treated rudely. I was the only customer in the restaurant. There was absolutely no excuse for her attitude. read more

I am reading this a one star because of a rude bartender. This bartender embarrassed me in front of a whole bunch of people by being completely rude and nasty and made me cry when all I was trying to do was bring glasses up to the bar that we're done because they were all over the place and nobody was picking them up. To give you a picture the glasses I brought up totaled about nine and there were still about 20 to 30 all over the tables. I go back a couple nights ago to get a drink and she says that she won't serve me until I give her an apology. And I said you made me cry and she said you made yourself cry sweetheart with that nasty grin and sarcastic tone which is ridiculous because is she me does she know what made me cry if she does she's either a psychiatrist or a psychologist and if that's the case she really shouldn't be tending bar. Sitting outside on Elm Street is pretty noisy but it was a beautiful day so we thought, "Why not?" We enjoyed our cocktails. The shamrock milkshake sounds heavy but it was strangely refreshing and deliciously minty. Much better than a real shamrock shake. The street corn fries were the star of the day and they were so filling for two, that that could have been our meal. The bangers and mash were decent, no frills. The mashed potatoes had a hint of vinegar and a nice texture. The kids thought they tasted strange. They are definitely a grown up mashed potato with some great flavors. I was too full to enjoy the beef stew but it smelled great. Everything was moving along nicely and The Shaheen was on par for a 5 review until they shorted us a "to go" Caesar salad that we were taking home for our daughter. Those boozy shamrock shakes go straight to your brain, I guess, and we didn't realize until we were home. Overall, I would recommend The Shaskeen.
