I wanted to love The Social. It's adorable and looked vegan-friendly, and I love to support local businesses. The Social gets three stars for service, atmosphere, and three good main dishes. First, we had the nicest, most helpful server I can imagine. And sitting outdoors on the restaurant's porch is absolutely lovely. We could have sat there all night, except I needed to go home to have dinner (more about that later). Though very few tables were occupied, the food took a long time to arrive. Two of our orders arrived with errors, and our very nice server brought the right things. My three companions liked their main dishes, though one main dish arrived barely lukewarm and presented unappealingly (we wouldn't notice presentation unless it was really good or just plain off). Two of the delicious-sounding veggie side dishes were just barely okay. The mashed potatoes were good, but the corn was tough and starchy, and the Brussels sprouts were too oily, tough, and bland, and the cheese on them didn't work. Many menu items were unavailable, including the only vegan main dish. I'm vegan. I asked our server, as I often do in advance or in the moment, at restaurants where nothing fully vegan is on the menu: Would the kitchen please make me anything at all with vegetables? I told them that I love all vegetables, beans, nuts, grains, whatever, and I would be grateful for whatever they made. She came back and said that the kitchen said no, the only vegan item was the plain salad on the menu. My salad was expensive. It was just okay-tasting; I did like the roasted cherry tomatoes. The dressing contained a shocking amount of sugar. I don't much care about bread, and I rarely eat it at restaurants. But I asked if I could have a piece of bread with my salad so I wasn't grinding with hunger. Our server brought one slice of wheat bread that was tasteless and stale. I ate dinner when I got home. There are way more GF items on the menu than vegan ones, so even if they run out of stuff, gluten-intolerant folks will probably find something to eat. We were disappointed in the unaccommodating and slow kitchen and the quality of the expensive food. None of us would return unless we heard something had changed. read more

Since my husband and I are still on Pacific Time, I was grateful to find a restaurant in this area that was open past eight pm. Service was friendly and the food was good--at least, mine was. My husband and I both enjoyed my blackened shrimp appetizer, roast chicken, mashed potatoes and glazed carrots. Portions were generous and the "sides" were enough to feed two or three people. My husband had originally ordered the gemelli pasta with the sausage marinara sauce. Ten or fifteen minutes later, when our waitress brought out my chicken entree, she apologized and said she'd just learned the kitchen had run out of marinara. Husband then ordered the dry aged ribeye. It came out in just a few minutes, but neither of us liked it. It was--well--dry. Husband said it tasted like jerky. I wanted to try the three-berry pie, but the kitchen had run out of that, too. It was only nine pm, and I was starting to get irritated. If you're going to stay open until ten, you need enough food to last until ten! OK, I understand when a restaurant sells out the special or a favorite dessert. But what kitchen runs out of marinara sauce?? It isn't that hard to make or store. The Social is clearly a work in progress. The Inn is a beautiful old building, but the dining room looked a bit stark. It could use some soft music and candles or flowers on the table. And the menu needs more focus. Many of the selections seem random or redundant. For example, the appetizers are heavy on bar-type food, with guacamole, salsa, three kinds of hummus, and two kinds of nuts. The salad section lists six salads and a dozen different dressings. That's overkill. The entrees consist of American classics mixed with Middle Eastern, Italian, Asian-style and vegan dishes. That's confusing. Sometimes, less is more. Consistent with the colonial inn theme, I suggest focusing on the classics, like that delicious roast chicken and, of course, the pies. read more

On our trip to Vermont the best meal we had was at the Social. The selection of entrees and sides showed creativity and variety. Everything was well prepared. The wine list was not extensive, but we found plenty that we could enjoy and the price was reasonable and the pours substantial. The staff was very nice and well trained to give an upscale feel to the evening. The furniture is not fancy,nor was it comfortable, but the restaurant. Is new so hopefully that will improve with time. read more

I hate to leave bad reviews. While the place was nice and service pretty good, the food was atrocious. I knew exactly what I was in for after I received our meat and cheese platter. The (what I think was) capocollo look like it was sliced with a spoon and was your average grocery store sandwich meat (along with the prosciutto and salami). The wife's chicken Caesar salad was made up of mostly old brown lettuce leaves. The "Spanish" chorizo and bean soup had no chorizo in it. Instead it was made with smoked kielbasa and it tasted like if came out of a can. The worst part was the "dry aged" rib-eye I was served. It arrived at my table barely seared (ordered medium rare) and a bit cooler than room temperature. All in all a miserable experience. read more

The afternoon tea has the potential to be great but was lacking in a lot of ways. According to their menu, the afternoon tea is $16.00 per person and includes your selection of one hot tea blend out of four, scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam, an assortment of macarons, petite fours, and mandolins and your choice of 2 sandwiches out of 5 options all to be served on white bread. My sister and I were seated at a plain white table clothed table, no condiments or floral arrangements. After about ten minutes we ordered. We each got a different tea and 2 different sandwiches. The teas each came in their own pots of vintaged broken pots, teacups had permanent faint tea rings. The teas were exceptional! We loved the flavors so much. My sister order an appetizer of stuffed dates wrapped in bacon for $7.50 they came out first. 4 pieces on a salad sized plate bedded in an excessive amount of watercress. The waitress told us an order was five not four and from the size of the plate, 5 or 6 would have made sense. We anticipated your traditional 3 tier tower but we're surprised a little to receive it all in a big birdcage looking tier in a lackluster way. The scones we plain freshly cooked biscuits and came with whip cream and blackberry jam ( not as advertised) no petite fours either, just some macaroons that tasted fresh and 2 Madeline's cold from a fridge that tasted dry and no real flavor. The biggest disappointment was the sandwiches. A traditional cucumber cream cheese sandwich has peeled cucumber sliced very thin and layered, the cream cheese is blended with fresh dill and lemon, these were thick unpeeled slices of cucumber on just plain cream cheese. The brie and ham had thick sliced ham and some old browning brie, not fresh or creamy. The avocado toast had so much lime in it to keep it from browning it overpowered the avocado taste. The goat cheese with apple and walnut were just that but tasted good. All the sandwiches had dry stale edged bread with no butter ( traditionally served on all tea sandwiches). A small flower arrangement on the tables, unbroken and I stained china, some paper lace doubles, and muffin liners for food would have made presentation better. Get and use some better tea sandwich recipes and cut presentations. read more

The location is perfect and MontP desperately needs a good breakfast spot. They need to simply the menu and execute it better. Everyone I've spoken to agrees that the food just isn't that great. For instance my avocado toast wasn't toasted. It was on thinly cut sandwich bread that couldn't support the weight of the toppings. Hand cutting a fresh loaf isn't hard. A lot of room for improvement but I'm confident Social can get there if it matters to the owners. read more

We had a very enjoyable dinner on the porch on Father's Day. The service was a little slow but we liked our server and my husband's and my meals were delicious. We really appreciated the variety of options for sizes of servings, including half portions of sides. The Social is an excellent addition to the diverse Montpelier restaurant scene. read more

I agree that The Social is a work in progress. The first words from our waitress was that we only had 90 minutes because they were busy even though only 1/3 of the tables were full. The food was good but cold and definitely confusing as the chicken could feed a family but the trout was about 6 bites. The portions are all over the place. I also agree that the menu is overly complicated. I really hope they figure it out, especially the cold food aspect. The outdoor environment is excellent but we will wait a bit before we try again. read more

This place is horrid. If I could give it ZERO STARS I would. The food was a joke. Vegetable sides listed as pan seared, when in reality it's just a mushy mess of poorly seasoned Brussel sprouts and yellow squash. My steak was under cooked and my whipped mashed potatoes were served to me cold. But here is the kicker they most certainly weren't whipped! Just a mound of poorly mashed potatoes. I sent my meal back and the manager had the audacity to bring the steak back to the table and say it was cooked perfectly. The blackened shrimp was over spiced. The wait staff is friendly but no one seems to know what they are doing. Table across from us even got billed incorrectly. Wait staff kept trying to deliver food to the wrong tables. Wonderful addition to the Montpelier food scene, especially if you can sit on the porch. (I hope they'll make the indoor dining spaces equally cozy and attractive). Suitable for a celebratory dinner, but you don't have to wear anything fancy! Our server, Leslie, was lovely - personable but not intrusive and appropriately concerned when the kitchen's supply of mashed potatoes and three berry pie was gone for the night. Food was well-prepared with some innovative twists but not outlandishly trendy. Portions are large, particularly the side dishes. Prices for drinks and food are very reasonable. I recommend everything we had: the focaccia with three butters, scallops, slow-roasted chicken, brussels sprouts, and a dense, flourless chocolate cake with raspberry coulis and whipped cream. The porch lights, ceiling fan, quiet Montpelier street, early Fall evening all combined to make this a memorable dining experience. read more

One of the worst meals I've ever had. The tomato soup was terrible, as was the chicken. The beef bolognese was cold, dry and had no sauce. The chicken was was rubbery, dry, lukewarm, and not fresh. The Brussels sprouts seemed to be old and reheated. The focaccia was not as advertised, it was actually small stale pieces of sourdough. The wait staff was inattentive and brought us the incorrect portions. We waited 2 hours for our food while there was nobody else in the restaurant, the tables and floors were also very dirty. After dropping off the food, the wait staff disappeared and never returned to check on us or refresh our drinks. We had to remind the wait staff that we were still here, and eventually tracked down an employee so we could get our bill and leave. We mentioned that there were a few things that we didn't love, and that employee said she would remove them from our bill. Then, the manager came in and argued with us about our complaints. The manager was completely dismissive of our concerns and very unfriendly and rude. They overcharged for sparkling water (more than the menu price). We liked the macaroni and cheese and the butternut squash and that's it. Do not waste your time or money coming here. read more

After reading some of the negative reviews I was a bit skeptical, but The Social did not disappoint. Party of four and no complaints. I had the salmon it was delicious and perfectly done. Side dish, the Wild Mushrooms, could have eaten a double portion. Other entrees at the table included the steak, seasoned nicely and again done perfectly. Waffle Fries, great flavor and wonderful crisp. Mac n'Cheese another thumbs up and Butternut Squash Salad. If I were to give a heads up on anything it would be the Sticky Chocolate Cake. While expecting a deep chocolate "traditional" cake slice it was more of a thick, rich brownie....I still ate every bite. Went for breakfast. The Eggs Benedict were very tasty but arrived cold. My companion had steak and eggs which he stated were very good. My Bloody Mary was a thick tomato sauce with not enough horseradish even though I specifically requested more. I didn't have the coffee but my table-mate said it was not good and the table behind us agreed that it was not very good coffee. They are also suffering from a small and seemingly inexperienced waitstaff. I am not going to ding them on that because that is a reality right now.
