I cannot rave enough about this cafe. Love that they brand themselves an "Ethical cafe," and all the amazing workshops and events they host. The Malaysian chai is SOOOOO good. I could have it every day. Love every single pastry I've had. Very nice, chill vibes.

I recently visited The Souk, a little spot in Whitby, offering a global variety of Coffee, Chai, and locally sourced pastries. My friend and I had delicious pastries and flavoured coffees in a cozy but very busy setting. The pastries were delicious, without being too sweet and the flavoured coffees were really good, although my Malaysian coffee was a wee bit sweet for my preference. Check out The Souk at Dundas St W and Brock St in Whitby!

When we walked in we were amazed by the beautiful decor - like a old-fashioned library with cherry blossoms everywhere. We ordered the following to try: - Strawberry Matcha: This was a very steep price but you will quickly realize why it's worth it. It's high grade ceremonial matcha on a layer of strawberry milk and topped with strawberry cream foam. A very large glass at that - an amazing drink! 10/10 - Spanish Latte: I got the 16 oz version which is a huge glass! Cute latte art and the coffee was very strong. 9/10 - Capri Pesto Toast: Yum. Mozzarella, tomatoes, pesto, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. All the toasts are cut in half which makes it easy to share which I thought was a nice touch. 9/10 - Pear Brulee Toast: Delicious and I think I'm going to try a version of this at home. Sliced pear with torched sugar toppings, on brie cheese. An amazing pairing of fruit with cheese. Loved this so much. I was debating this vs the honey comb brie toast and I think I made the right decision to choose this. 10/10 Service overall is slow - be warned (they have a sign). I'd put this at 5 star review otherwise; while there was indeed a lot of care put into all the drinks and food I've found they were easily distracted too. Otherwise this is a great cafe that really takes pride in their drinks and food! I would love to come back to try their other pastries next time.

If the owners are reading this: PLEASE BRING IT BACK. They also had other unique caffeinated inventions but I don't see them as often. That being said, their main stay is truly their gelato. And that has to stay. There are traditional flavours like cheesecake, but then you also got a Ceylon Ginger Biscuit all on display just being so enticing. It's practically begging for me to take it home. Which I did and loved it. They also have sandwiches which I haven't tried, but again they are unique and bring in those South Asian elements. Definitely worth trying.

If it gets too busy, you'll have to wait outside. Inside is nice and clean looking, very aesthetically pleasing. There were a lot of staff working too. I ordered a double scoop of the Maple Walnut and New York Cheesecake ($9 + tax). I really enjoyed the Maple Walnut, it was good. Had a good combination of both flavours. The New York Cheesecake was OK. It didn't really taste like the cake, but I still enjoyed whatever the taste was. The toppings that they put on top was good. It was like some crunchy crumble. Overall, I'd come back and try out the other flavours. Looking on their website, they have so many other flavours which weren't available at the time. One thing I would have liked to see was some outdoor seating or something. I had to stand outside the shop to eat my gelato.

We had made reservations beforehand, as this place is seasonal therefore, it gets quite busy. We were seated at a table on a ground with rocks near the serving station, which was situated outside under an umbrella, facing the water fountain. The view was spectacular, as there were many flowers blooming, and the water fountains were flowing beautifully. Once we were seated, we were given menus, and settled on our items. I decided on the high tea, while my husband settled on the reuban sandwich. I was first given an option of tea bags, at which I chose herbal berry tea. The plates, pots, and cups were all plain white, which I didn't find too appealing. Also, there were no tablecloths on the tables, as the tables were outside, and constantly under the sun. I also found that the chairs were not comfortable, and shaky as they were placed on rocks. Once the tea was served, the three dishes of food items arrived. The sandwiches were not appetizing, as one had huge pieces of turkey, the other (which was supposed to be a pinwheel sandwich) was too loose, and falling apart. The only sandwich that I actually liked was the cucumber with cream cheese, which tasted authentic to a traditional tea setting meal. The scones were next, and were a nice size however, they broke upon being cut. Also, the jam had huge chunks of fruit, which was impossible to spread. The lemon curd was nice but, the whip cream wasn't anything close to clotted cream. Finally, the desserts were the last section to be eaten. The shortbread cookie was as thin as paper, with little to no taste. The only delicious item was the Dubai chocolate brownie, which was amazing. The little macaroons were the size of my pinky fingernail, which was disappointing. And to top it all off, the price was $68 per person, plus tax! Would not recommend this tea room to anyone, as the food is not worth the price, albeit the view and atmosphere are stunning.
