Beautiful porch with rocking chairs. So peaceful

My best friend and I stayed here for a weekend getaway and it DID NOT disappoint. The breakfast is phenomenal and so is the service. They provide beach items like towels & chairs for you & are extremely accommodating. The beach & shops are just a few blocks away. Perfect stay. We will definitely be back!

We stayed at the Southern Mansion for one night. It was a wonderful experience. Ken is fantastic and was a wonderful host. We stayed in room 5, which we are fortunate for (I say that because our AC was perfect, but there was one room upstairs that apparently didn't cool off as well). The room was clean and the breakfast was absolutely delicious! We ordered the omelette, pastries (freshly baked each day btw) yogurt and fruit. Very nice experience. There were slight issues which is the only reason this wasn't a five star experience, but otherwise it was very good.

Cape May is synonymous with charm. Perhaps no greater sense of serenity can be found beyond the historic property of the Southern Mansion. It is, quite simply, the bed and breakfast to which all others will be judged. After several stays at the mansion, I still find myself in awe of its grandeur. No matter what season, Christmastime highly recommended, splendor abounds. From the ornate woodworking, fixtures and fireplaces, to a relaxing evening rocking away on the porch, you will feel truly spoiled. If that weren't enough, the breakfast will also keep you coming back and relating stories of your stay to, hopefully, future guests. The Southern Mansion has the feeling of a living thing. Considering the long history within its walls and surrounding town, it just might be.

My husband and I spent 2 lovely nights down at the Southern Mansion for the NYE holiday. I spent quite a bit of time researching where to stay down in Cape May for our first trip to the area. Southern Mansion is definitely one of the best. Its very well maintained and a quintessential B&B. Its also only a short walk to the downtown area as well as the beach (you can get to both in just about 5 minutes). For anyone considering Cape May for the Christmas holiday I highly recommend it! Unlike many beach towns, Cape May is quite bustling over the winter season. Nearly every B&B, restaurant, or store that is open is dressed up which is nice. I am giving Southern Mansion 5 stars because I loved it. My husband however was a little annoyed that there wasnt more going on for NYE. Congress Hall seems to be the busiest spot with much going on if that is what you are looking for.

While the grounds and building definitely are pretty, and I can see this being a popular wedding or event venue we were really disappointed in the room and lack of amenities for the price. When I booked room 14 and noticed it said near the breakfast room I called and asked how close to the breakfast room is the room and if it is noisy ? I told them I was a light sleeper and really wanted a quiet room - even if it was a higher price. I also wasn't told the room is next to a public bathroom. The room has windows into the breakfast room and the coffee station is literally outside of the window. We heard everything. We heard people going into the bathroom all times of the day and night. We heard workers doing breakfast setup from 7am. Every mug every fork every plate being placed and constant conversation between the workers. If I didn't call to ask, I wouldn't expect to be told "Noisy room don't book it" but to specifically call and ask if the room was noisy and not be told it was next to a public restroom and in the same area as people are eating is unacceptable. Additionally, people were waiting for the coffee and it was almost 8 am. It shouldn't be a surprise that people want coffee in the morning. Pretty common don't you think? Maybe they can put it out at 7am and they wouldn't feel so inconvenienced. It's kind of comical that they woke us up and then wonder why we want coffee. We waited for coffee then several minutes later some packaged creamers. Breakfast at our scheduled time was very good as was the service. Now for the room issues. In need of updates and repairs. Noisiest creakiest bed in the world and a mattress that feels like it needs replacing. The shades on one of the windows wouldn't close, there is at best case red wine on the curtain near the bathroom at worst case it's blood. The bathroom shower doesn't have a shower head so it's like showering under a very strong garden hose. The robe they offer is on a dirty hanger in the bathroom and looks about 50 years old and threadbare. It states on the site if you want to take it home we charge you $75. I can't imagine who wants this but they are also charging $75 for lost room keys too so maybe that will help buy a $10 shower head for the bathroom. There is no water no tea no coffee available for guests during their stay. For the price, it would be nice to have some water. I won't stay here again while there are other inns and places with more amenities and cleaner rooms.

Southern Mansion is exactly what you need when traveling to Cape May - a comfortable, extremely friendly, quiet and relaxing place to stay while at the beach. If you are expecting to be greeted by someone in a suit, you will be disappointed. This is not a chain hotel, it is a casual, but very Victorian and elegant bed and breakfast where you get out of it what you want to. Our room (14) was very spacious and had its own bathroom. The bed was gigantic and this particular room, along with a few others, has a back entrance from the parking lot which was extremely convenient since to enter the front door you need to punch in a code every time. We actually never went in or out of the front door because we had our own private entrance. The shower was also very big and overall, the room made for a very relaxing oasis after a day at the beach. The breakfast portion of the B&B was also a hit. No, Gordon Ramsay was not brewing up beautifully handcrafted plates of food, but it was a solid way to start the day with as much food as you want. Before you get waited on, you have your choice of yogurt, cereal, tea/coffee/juices, fruit and phenomenal pastries and corn muffins (there may still be a couple in my bag). Once your friendly wait staff arrives you can choose between all forms of eggs and omelettes with bacon or sausage, as well as pancakes and french toast. If it was a free-standing restaurant, I might not eat here every day, but it sure was convenient to walk ten steps to the main room and sit down for a nice breakfast before getting out for the day. Southern Mansion is full of ambiance. If you like the Victorian era or ghosts, you have your options there. I found the staff to be a pleasure to deal with, always helpful and funny, and while the entire property was not perfectly clean, it was very well kept and worth the price. The location is great; you can walk to all the shops, ghost tours, etc. in about five minutes. This property is just like its ghosts that allegedly inhabit it - treat it (them - boo!) like you would want to be treated and you will enjoy your stay without question.

What a beautiful place to stay. Very pricey but if you're looking to treat yourself this is the place to stay while visiting Cape May, NJ. The entire place is warm and cozy. The staff is exceptional and friendly. And forget about making breakfast plans, theirs is very good. I cannot wait to come back.

Loved staying here @ the Southern Mansion. My husband and I went to Cape May for our one year anniversary and wanted to do something a little different from what we typically do living in New York. This was a great idea to stay at the mansion with the Victorian decor and the great (southern) hospitality. We got the least expensive option and the room was still huge and was great! It was located on the first floor and still in the original building (as opposed to the annex) and was extra convenient with its own private entrance where we could take five steps and be at our car. The staff was friendly and helpful. They came in the afternoon of our first night to get our bed ready (they had to remove all the decorative blankets). We spent a good portion of the day at the beach which was less than a 10 minute walk and only 5 minutes to the main shopping area. The breakfast was good enough. Nothing special (eggs, pastries, juices, jams, fruit), but it was so nice to be able to sit in the dining area with the sunlight and view of the grounds. I also liked that there weren't any kids in sight, which didn't kill the mood for our special occasion. It seemed to be all adults and couples. The only downside, which is kind of silly, was that there were advertisements of it being on some show as a haunted site. I didn't know this before we got there, and admittedly was a little freaked out, but we made it through the night :)

For those looking for vintage Victorian charm, you will be pleased with this property. The location cannot be beat, the entire historic district is a very short walk. The beach is not much farther. We stayed in the Renaissance room, a very comfy and roomy king. These were definitely two of the best night's sleep we've had in recent times! The breakfast service here is really excellent with several menu choices. They will also accommodate a range of custom requests (obviously within reason). The staff was great throughout our stay and everything is well thought out. One caveat here is the no parking on premises, there are however parking options close by. We were able to get free on street parking a short walk away. Loading and unloading at the property is also easy. Highly recommend!!

For starters, the Harrison/Pharos Inn does not have a front desk. When you show up for your stay,…read moreyou are not told where to park to unload. Eventually you get out and ring a bell. Someone that is working in the back (housekeeping or kitchen staff), comes to let you in and hands you the paperwork and a quick synopsis of your stay. There is no one to help you with your bags up to the 2nd or 3rd floors. One of the reasons that I chose the Harrison was for its location. For this reason I would give the Inn 3.5 stars rather than 3, but that is not an option. The location was perfect. Close to the center of town and the beach. One could park their car and walk or bike everywhere. However, the photos are misleading. I thought that I was booking a B&B with the old home charm, but one that was also impeccably updated. The rooms had white bedding which is similar to upscale hotels, however other parts of the room were subpar. The carpets need to be replaced. In the hallways and in our room they were filthy (stained and discolored all over). The bathroom shower was a prefabricated shower unit which was underwhelming for the price, but what was most annoying was that the shower regulator was loose and difficult to adjust. The water did not warm up for a few minutes and dripped while in the off position. The TV was small and too far away for the remote to work from the bed which is the only spot in the room that you would watch it from. Perhaps it needed batteries. I suspected this stay experience was going to be different than what I am accustomed to because I was contacted a few days prior to our stay exclusively via an AI messenger. Any questions that AI could not answer, the AI messenger had to escalate the question to the front desk (which did not exist at the inn). If you want to speak with a live person instead of going back and forth with the AI messenger, you have to call the number listed on the website. You are calling a general number. The Harrison/Pharos is a part of a conglomerate of many hotels in Cape May. You must listen to all of the options, and finally pick a number to punch to hopefully speak with a person. I chose housekeeping because there was not a front desk option. I called about how to work the TV because there were no instructions. The housekeeping person was not successful at helping over the phone. We were going out to dinner and after 8PM there is no one to help or stop by. We ended up figuring out some of the issues ourselves and then gave up. In addition, the network to get on the wifi was different than what was listed in the paperwork. Maybe as AI becomes more prevalent, people will become more accepting because we are forced to. In the future, I will make sure to avoid such places as long as I can. I have been to many B&Bs in the past and one of the perks is a fantastic breakfast. The breakfast was good, but not great. The afternoon tea was ok. The cake was dry. If I were eating at a restaurant, I would not go back. We paid for early entry to the room on the day we arrived. I was told that they could take our bags if we arrived early and the room was not ready. We chose to pay to get in two hours early. This is something new to me, but I did it anyway, If we had not, I do not know what they would have done with our bags. There was no one to help. For the amount of money that we paid for the room (about $600 per night after all fees), I expected more. I chose the place because of its location, old house charm, and what I thought was its clean, updated (not dingy) insides. The photos are misleading. Definitely not worth the price we paid. Even at a lower price point for the weekend of June 19th and 20th, much of my dissatisfaction would still be warranted.

I'm sure the summer is more packed, but it can't be that bad because Cape May itself is just beautiful. There are restaurants, clothes, souvenirs and so much more to do on that strip. I can't wait to go back there.
