A wonderful place for a getaway in Cape May centrally located so that you can walk to everything if you want to! What a beautiful mansion with impeccable grounds & an inviting porch to lounge around on! When selecting your room, if the room is not on the first floor, note that the stairs are quite steep & can be a little difficult to navigate if you are carrying a lot of things or wearing high heels! We stayed in the famous Red Room on the second floor, room 3. It was a lovely room with very high ceiling & a very unusual painting. The bed was very comfortable & I liked that we could control the temperature in our room. The sink for the bathroom is outside the bathroom with hardly any countertop just so you know. Excellent breakfast - you do have to make your selection the night before which is a little difficult since sometimes I want something different when I wake up. food was very good & excellent service. I think a fire pit would be a great thing to add to the property. Other than that, we had an enjoyable experience & I greatly recommend this place! read more

No Chain smokers constantly running in and out slamming doors. The lack of Children present made it even better. I was sold once I saw that. This bed and breakfast was beautiful. Our room was breathtaking. The only offput was the carpet (tiger stripes) really did not fit the time period of the home. We're were in room 2. It had a private bath, comfortable bed and it's own sitting room(sun porch). The pillows were awesome!!! And plenty of them. The water pressure was great in the shower. This home was close to nice shaded walking for our service dog and the staff was very accommodating. The following morning our breakfast was delish. I ordered French toast de jour (which ended up being blueberry) hubby had pancakes with blueberry's and sausage. we both had mixed fruit. Again, the staff was awesome to our service dog and offered him breakfast as well. We held it til he was off vest. All in all; this was an amazing experience on the jersey shore!! read more

Unfortunately, the once beautiful Southern Mansion is falling into disrepair. We have been coming here for more than 20 years and have very slowly seen its decay. In our most recent visit we observed the following: 1. Our shower was not as clean as it should be. The grout was black in some areas. 2. There were quite a few areas below the roofline that had rotted wood. 3. Rotted wood was also noticed on the bottom of the siding near the foundation. 4. We found the yellow paint on part of the building vs. the faded paint on the remainder of the building In desperate need of a new paint job. 5. There are missing roof tiles. 6. The gardens that were once beautiful were full of weeds and dried up flowers. It seems that management is restricting watering of the flowers. 7. The outside shower was filthy, it was smelly and the mold was disgusting in the once beautiful shower. 8. The breakfast was not very good and the cook got the order wrong. 9. The lighting that once lit the outline of the buildings are no longer used in the evening. It appears that the owner lost interest in this property and is probably going to sell it. To run it into the ground and in doing so alienating many loyal customers is not just bad business it's a slap in the face to the many families who year after year support this business I am being generous when I say this is a 3 star hotel at best Sorry to say it but we will return. read more

We stayed at the Southern Mansion for one night. It was a wonderful experience. Ken is fantastic and was a wonderful host. We stayed in room 5, which we are fortunate for (I say that because our AC was perfect, but there was one room upstairs that apparently didn't cool off as well). The room was clean and the breakfast was absolutely delicious! We ordered the omelette, pastries (freshly baked each day btw) yogurt and fruit. Very nice experience. There were slight issues which is the only reason this wasn't a five star experience, but otherwise it was very good. read more

We spent 3 nights at this hotel/inn recently. This old hotel/inn was updated many years ago and not since as it has fallen into very poor condition. Our room [19] was very expensive for us and we went as a special occasion for my birthday. The bed was ok, there was good air conditioning with in -room bath but the chairs were uncomfortable and needed repair as the springs were felt and the upholstery was old, dirty and warn. There was a TV but it was small and on the opposite side of the room and it was difficult to watch without stretching your neck up from the bad chairs or making it loud enough to hear from the bed.. There is no mini fridge or coffee maker in the room. The toilet is very low to the ground and difficult for most adults. The entire hotel needed paint, better seating, better light. The breakfast was mediocre. The food was not hot, and was delivered 20 -40 mins late. There was nothing extra. There was no station with water, tea, coffee hot or cold; no mints or cookies in the afternoon/evening. They do not give you a tag for the beach which you need to walk on the sand. Many of the staff was pleasant. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. You can view it from the outside and see the lovely gardens but that's the best of it. read more

I was very disappointed with my stay. I have a "Private" sign on my door Saturday morning and the maid still came in and serviced the room. I filled out the breakfast forms. Were they not read? I had requested Saturday breakfast of French toast with topping and no topping was on it. I also requested fruit and was not served fruit. On Sunday,I requested an English muffin with my breakfast and did not receive it. On Sunday, the maid came in my room without knocking as I was getting ready to check out. My husband and I spent 2 lovely nights down at the Southern Mansion for the NYE holiday. I spent quite a bit of time researching where to stay down in Cape May for our first trip to the area. Southern Mansion is definitely one of the best. Its very well maintained and a quintessential B&B. Its also only a short walk to the downtown area as well as the beach (you can get to both in just about 5 minutes). For anyone considering Cape May for the Christmas holiday I highly recommend it! Unlike many beach towns, Cape May is quite bustling over the winter season. Nearly every B&B, restaurant, or store that is open is dressed up which is nice. I am giving Southern Mansion 5 stars because I loved it. My husband however was a little annoyed that there wasnt more going on for NYE. Congress Hall seems to be the busiest spot with much going on if that is what you are looking for. read more

This is a lovely bed and breakfast. The gardens are outstanding and the wait staff ( waiters and housekeepers) were great. However, we would have appreciated a bit more contact with the owner/manager to offer some "southern" hospitality. As senior citizens we could have used some help bringing our bags up to the second floor. Upon leaving, we were shown a closed office door and a basket to drop off our key. A little "how was your visit?" would have been nice. Such a special facility and the cost should make people feel a bit more welcomed. We may try again ... we might not. read more

While the grounds and building definitely are pretty, and I can see this being a popular wedding or event venue we were really disappointed in the room and lack of amenities for the price. When I booked room 14 and noticed it said near the breakfast room I called and asked how close to the breakfast room is the room and if it is noisy ? I told them I was a light sleeper and really wanted a quiet room - even if it was a higher price. I also wasn't told the room is next to a public bathroom. The room has windows into the breakfast room and the coffee station is literally outside of the window. We heard everything. We heard people going into the bathroom all times of the day and night. We heard workers doing breakfast setup from 7am. Every mug every fork every plate being placed and constant conversation between the workers. If I didn't call to ask, I wouldn't expect to be told "Noisy room don't book it" but to specifically call and ask if the room was noisy and not be told it was next to a public restroom and in the same area as people are eating is unacceptable. Additionally, people were waiting for the coffee and it was almost 8 am. It shouldn't be a surprise that people want coffee in the morning. Pretty common don't you think? Maybe they can put it out at 7am and they wouldn't feel so inconvenienced. It's kind of comical that they woke us up and then wonder why we want coffee. We waited for coffee then several minutes later some packaged creamers. Breakfast at our scheduled time was very good as was the service. Now for the room issues. In need of updates and repairs. Noisiest creakiest bed in the world and a mattress that feels like it needs replacing. The shades on one of the windows wouldn't close, there is at best case red wine on the curtain near the bathroom at worst case it's blood. The bathroom shower doesn't have a shower head so it's like showering under a very strong garden hose. The robe they offer is on a dirty hanger in the bathroom and looks about 50 years old and threadbare. It states on the site if you want to take it home we charge you $75. I can't imagine who wants this but they are also charging $75 for lost room keys too so maybe that will help buy a $10 shower head for the bathroom. There is no water no tea no coffee available for guests during their stay. For the price, it would be nice to have some water. I won't stay here again while there are other inns and places with more amenities and cleaner rooms. read more

Southern Mansion is exactly what you need when traveling to Cape May - a comfortable, extremely friendly, quiet and relaxing place to stay while at the beach. If you are expecting to be greeted by someone in a suit, you will be disappointed. This is not a chain hotel, it is a casual, but very Victorian and elegant bed and breakfast where you get out of it what you want to. Our room (14) was very spacious and had its own bathroom. The bed was gigantic and this particular room, along with a few others, has a back entrance from the parking lot which was extremely convenient since to enter the front door you need to punch in a code every time. We actually never went in or out of the front door because we had our own private entrance. The shower was also very big and overall, the room made for a very relaxing oasis after a day at the beach. The breakfast portion of the B&B was also a hit. No, Gordon Ramsay was not brewing up beautifully handcrafted plates of food, but it was a solid way to start the day with as much food as you want. Before you get waited on, you have your choice of yogurt, cereal, tea/coffee/juices, fruit and phenomenal pastries and corn muffins (there may still be a couple in my bag). Once your friendly wait staff arrives you can choose between all forms of eggs and omelettes with bacon or sausage, as well as pancakes and french toast. If it was a free-standing restaurant, I might not eat here every day, but it sure was convenient to walk ten steps to the main room and sit down for a nice breakfast before getting out for the day. Southern Mansion is full of ambiance. If you like the Victorian era or ghosts, you have your options there. I found the staff to be a pleasure to deal with, always helpful and funny, and while the entire property was not perfectly clean, it was very well kept and worth the price. The location is great; you can walk to all the shops, ghost tours, etc. in about five minutes. This property is just like its ghosts that allegedly inhabit it - treat it (them - boo!) like you would want to be treated and you will enjoy your stay without question. read more

Loved staying here @ the Southern Mansion. My husband and I went to Cape May for our one year anniversary and wanted to do something a little different from what we typically do living in New York. This was a great idea to stay at the mansion with the Victorian decor and the great (southern) hospitality. We got the least expensive option and the room was still huge and was great! It was located on the first floor and still in the original building (as opposed to the annex) and was extra convenient with its own private entrance where we could take five steps and be at our car. The staff was friendly and helpful. They came in the afternoon of our first night to get our bed ready (they had to remove all the decorative blankets). We spent a good portion of the day at the beach which was less than a 10 minute walk and only 5 minutes to the main shopping area. The breakfast was good enough. Nothing special (eggs, pastries, juices, jams, fruit), but it was so nice to be able to sit in the dining area with the sunlight and view of the grounds. I also liked that there weren't any kids in sight, which didn't kill the mood for our special occasion. It seemed to be all adults and couples. The only downside, which is kind of silly, was that there were advertisements of it being on some show as a haunted site. I didn't know this before we got there, and admittedly was a little freaked out, but we made it through the night :) read more

Beware ....my niece had her wedding here and it was a huge disappointment. Can't believe the owner can operate on such an unprofessional manner. The maitre d was also serving food, there wasn't enough filet mignon and mind you that we had to order our food in advance on the RSVP card. My aunt was given the end piece & it was one big piece of fat and we asked them if they could change it for another piece and they said they didn't have any more. Instead of taking 40 minutes to serve dinner it literally took them an hour and a half and it cut into the band time and my niece paid a lot of money for the band who literally only played an hour and 20 minutes. They even offered to play later than planned but the maître d' Ken told them that they couldn't because he was in such a rush to end the wedding. Only two people serving the dinners. Beautiful old house in a very convenient location. Walking distance to great restaurants and the Washington Street shops. We didn't use our car at all except to ride out to Sunset Beach to catch a beautiful sunset (hence the name). The Southern Mansion is quiet - almost too quiet. It would have been nice to have afternoon cocktails or appetizers available but there was absolutely no one around. When we arrived we were greeted by a nice woman who showed us to the room. We stayed in Room 20 which had a private balcony and claw foot tub. The room could use sprucing up but overall it was clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast included is a bonus - and it was very good. Service is excellent and the only complaint my husband had was the coffee wasn't out out until close to 9 am, their start of breakfast. The only other advice I'd give The Southern Mansion is to be mindful of optics. They had a gazebo out front (for weddings) which had dead flowers hanging the entire time we were there - the landscapers finally removed them on Friday in preparation for an upcoming weekend wedding. Also the area outside our room was used as storage so every time we went to our room we had to look at stacked chairs and tables... may not sound like a big deal but not what I want to see when paying $450/night. The private balcony also overlooked an area which had tables and chairs stored for outdoor events. A beautiful older home that just needed some additional attention. While the grounds are beautiful (as is Cape May), this venue is completely overpriced; not worth the money at all. We stayed for a wedding and the whole place is very unorganized. We were overcharged for our room, and were given a difference price from management every time we called. Everything was handled unprofessional. The breakfast was sub-par, but the wait staff was nice. I would not recommend staying here. Very outdated and there is no 'wow' factor. read more

What a beautiful experience. This was our first bed and breakfast experience and what better way than in a mansion built in the 1800s! The property is absolutely breath taking. The garden, room, entrances, and shared spaces in the home are all so well kept and clean. Our room had huge ceilings (room 18) and every little detail of the room made the experience all that better. The moldings in the room were beautiful. The breakfast was feet away from our bedroom door every morning. The waitresses were very sweet. Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting Cape May. This was such a better experience than staying at any of the hotels on the boardwalk, in my opinion. :) read more

Above everything else a place has to offer, great service should be #1. I stayed here in early spring hoping for a high-end B&B experience and was very disappointed. Despite high hopes, as the property is gorgeous, my room was dirty, I got pinkeye from the pillowcase, and was never told when/where breakfast was served. I'm sure it was a fluke thing - the manager's response to a review I posted on another site states that every guest is not only told about breakfast verbally but is given a sheet regarding breakfast times. I did not receive either. To add insult to injury, I received an unprofessional and abrasive reply to my honest and objective review, in which the manager insinuated that I wasn't being truthful about my experience, and all but flat out said it was a lie. I have no patience or tolerance for such treatment, which is why I'm giving this place one star instead of two. I can handle being disappointed by hotel staff neglecting to tell me about breakfast and can even stomach the pinkeye - but a rude reply from management, in my opinion, reflects much more on this establishment. read more

The Southern Mansion is by far the best bed & breakfast in Cape May (or maybe the world!). My wife and I have come here several times over the past 12 years and have never been disappointed. We have always stayed in the "main house" and have enjoyed several different rooms. They are all somewhat different but all "classic". I highly recommend the Master Suite (room #2) on the main floor. It is large and has a separate reading room. This is also the only room with a private entrance (in case you need to hide from the paparazzi). The breakfast is always great as they serve all of the breakfast basics. The service for the entire bed & breakfast clearly has high standards and that is evident from every employee. The hotel manager is Denise. She has a tough job and does it well. The staff's great attitude obviously comes from the top and Denise has trained her staff well. They are located within a 10 minute walk of the beach and are 1-15 minutes to so many great restaurants. The Southern Mansion can be pricey and it is worth every penny! If you are looking for a high end romantic getaway in Cape May, you have to stay here at least once. Believe me, you will have a different standard of bed & breakfasts once you have experienced this jewel. read more

Amazing rooms; you won't find anything like them anywhere else. Great breakfast as well. And the staff are generally friendly. The one issue I had staying there was that for the second-floor room I was in (as well as four other rooms to the left and right of our room), there was no roof or covering on the porch leading to the rooms. When it rained, it required that we stand in the rain punching the keypad code to get into the main building of the mansion. Because their gutters have an issue, the door leading to the mansion also happens to be where a torrent of water pours down. That's the only downside to an otherwise beautiful place to stay. read more

All of the rave reviews of this place are true, except for room 11A. It was the only room available at the time of booking and was over $200. At that price we should not have had the following experience. We did not notice the problems until we returned from dinner around 9 pm and there was no one to tell at the front desk. First, the sink was hopelessly clogged. Nothing more annoying than that. This is something that the housekeeper should notice, report and get fixed ASAP. No excuse. Second, the queen mattress desperately needs to be replaced. It felt like it was over 30 yrs old and overstuffed with straw. It was the creakiest bed ever. It was lumpy and did not make for a good nights sleep. The AC was unobtrusive and effective and part of the central system. Why still have a window unit then? Remove it so guests can enjoy a bit of a view. The shower stall was huge. You could fit 5 people in there. Do your guests a favor and get a new, larger john. We had an excellent breakfast and enjoyed strolling the gorgeous grounds as most everything was blooming. The staff was awesome. Plenty of parking. Just don't stay in room 11A until you can be assured it has been renovated. I suggest that the management spend one night in there and experience it firsthand. read more

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon for 10 days. The first few nights we had the suite (room 2) which was 750 sq feet of awesomeness. I wanted to stay there the entire time but unfortunately, someone had booked it before us so we were only able to stay there the first 3 nights and then we moved into room 6 - the blue and yellow room on the second floor which actually became our favorite room in the house. We loved the character of this place - the high ceilings, the period furniture, the delicious breakfasts - everything is top notch. The breakfast staff was super - they were professional in every way and we couldn't be happier with their service. the maid service too was top notch - friendly, professional, attentive and super accommodating. Towards the end of our stay, the mansion was booked for a very elegant wedding and in my humble opinion, they did an amazing job - They really paid attention to detail - and everything looked so beautiful. I saw the bride the following morning at the front desk and congratulated her. She, too, seemed happy with the mansion, their service, and it's hospitality. Beautiful restored mansion. The front parlor is reminiscent of European luxury with two beautiful fire places, huge mirrors, beautifully appointed furniture and paintings. We stayed in room 18 which is thoughtfully decorated and quite large with a 4 poster king size bed and a gorgeous armoire and sitting area. There is also an extra divan for an additional guest. The grounds are large and well manicured-- perfect for a wedding and reception. There is also a room downstairs with a bar for catering next to the commercial sized kitchen. Guests can relax, enjoy a great breakfast, free wifi, flat screen tv and peace and quiet. Can't wait to stay again. read more

My husband and I thought the Southern Mansion was wonderful, and the decor was spot on,.. exactly what you would want in a B&B .. comfy sheets and pillows- great staff. My only problem was that we asked to see the ball room for an upcoming Anniversary party and although the room was being used for a meeting the general manager was rude and abrupt .. shaking her hand in the air and saying No, No No,.. they cant have people down here! We laughed it off and thought okay you just cost them money! you always have time to stop and be polite " she could have said "sorry not right now come back later, a different time perhaps and as guest there- we thought this was unprofessional and rude. It was cool to learn that some rooms are known to be haunted but if you're not into that that's fine because the grandness of the rooms makes you forget all of that! All setup details we agreed upon during the planning process (bar setup, moving decorations around, etc.) were done exactly as we had discussed - not one thing was off! The bartenders and servers were great, the food was DELICIOUS and everything was just so... PERFECT. The Southern Mansion is nothing like your typical "wedding factory", mediocre wedding venue. I was given so much attention during the planning process and the mansion is so beautiful on its own, it doesn't need much to dress it up! If you are looking for a unique, vintage-themed venue for a small group, look no further! *****Bed & Breakfast Review: As for the bed & breakfast aspect, we stayed here two nights during our wedding weekend. Five couples total stayed in their rooms on the porch (#16-20) and each was uniquely beautiful! Although a newer part of the Southern Mansion, the rooms are true to the Victorian style and all 5 rooms had connecting doors, making for a fun after party! Breakfast each morning was also a treat, with a full spread of fruits, muffins, yogurt and a breakfast entree of your choice. I had the french toast both mornings with the topping of the day (walnuts one day, strawberries the next) - it was SO GOOD. If you're heading to the Jersey Shore and want a nicer quiet place to stay, I'd recommend Southern Mansion. It's just a few blocks from the "downtown" area and beach, and provides a nice getaway after being around crazy tourists all day. I was in a wedding here last weekend, and stayed one night, and it was just lovely. The grounds are beautiful, with lots of green space, and places to sit and relax outside (the front porch was fantastic!). Staff was very helpful and professional. Breakfast was very tasty! A great place to stay for a getaway. The mansion was completely renovated in the late 90s and maintained very well. The rooms are very large for a B&B. Sit out in the porch and just relax is major plus. The property is very well landscaped and has parking for the guests. Parking is a plus.......And two block walk you are at the shopping area. The staff was friendly and breakfast was good. Definitely a nice place to stay. read more

I love this place. We stayed in the off season so it was very quiet. The front staff was helpful but never intrusive. I had emailed them the week before to ask for dinner recommendations because so many restaurants are closed in the off season- they got back to me in a day with suggestions. We stayed in a premier king room off the solarium- it was spacious and luxurious. The solarium was really nice to sit and have a glass of wine before dinner. Breakfast was terrific as well- nice buffet spread plus made to order omelettes or pancakes. Also conveniently located near the heart of downtown Cape May. read more

My wife and I stayed for our tenth anniversary and we were so pleased with the staff, service, and ambiance. The Southern Mansion is a block from the shops which makes it a great little getaway with out being in the middle of nowhere. Breakfast was fantastic every morning with a fresh made to order menu as well as a continental buffet. If you have a special occasion to celebrate and you don't plan on bringing the little ones this is the place to stay! read more
