My usual place to climb, chill and just be in the" zone". The staffs are always friendly and they welcome new climbers with open arms. Each month, they do provide discounts on certain programmes for anyone who is interested in climbing. I like to climb with Hubs on the weekends, especially on a Saturday morning when there are a few climbers. But my favorite time to climb is during the weekday mornings or afternoons when this place can just be called "my own sanctuary". During the weekdays especially from 5 pm onwards this place can be jam-packed with climbers alike. Each month and every other month, they do change the routes for climbers to progress in their climbing with different range of climbing difficulties. There is also a place for you to do bouldering as well if you dont have a climbing partner to belay. Even my cousin from Singapore who came for a visit sometime around July/August 2009 was awed about this place. If you want, do give them a try to climb. I recently came here because of the Monday/Wednesday discounted deal. After the bouldering fee ($9) and shoe rentals ($6), the overall price was relatively cheap compared to other climbing gyms. Upon first sight, it seemed like the gym was very old and small. However, I eventually got over this after realizing that there were a lot of obstacles for me to do as a newbie. I definitely had lots of fun trying to complete all the V0, V1, and V2 courses. I did find that some V0 courses were extremely difficult to do, that even my S/O, who does a V3 on average, could not complete them. So some courses were questionable on their rating, but overall I had a great time and was definitely challenged. All in all, I actually ended up liking this place despite it looking "old" and "run down". I would recommend going on a Wednesday or Monday for its discounted rate and for the fact that it was not busy at all, allowing me to pretty much do any course I wanted to without a long wait. I look forward to returning once my upper arms heal from being sore, and hopefully will get to try belaying sometime! read more

I recently came to check out the original Rock'n and Jam'n with Carrie J. We go to the second location regularly for a weekend climbing date. It was time to change the scenery! One of the first things I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be as many auto belays as Rock'n and Jam'n 2. Luckily I was there with my bestie, so that wasn't going to restrict me. The set up of the gym was great and I enjoyed the runs. There was even a 5.8 that had an overhang to climb! That is something we don't get often (if ever) at the other gym. So even though my arms said no, I had to overcome that and give it a try. I'm glad I did! Also glad the my girl Carrie J. knows better than to let me off the wall when I'm about to give up. We all need that from time to time. I was slightly disappointed because there seemed to be many more 5.10 and higher skilled runs than others. We pretty much did every run that was under a 5.9 in the building. I'm sure that changes from time to time depending on the route makers. All in all, I had a great time at the OG Rock'n and Jam'n and can't wait for many more climbing dates here to come. Climb on fellow Yelpers! read more

I went here today to try my hand at rock climbing. Being a first timer, and being with someone who hasn't climbed in a number of years, we were a little intimidated and the experience we had when we arrived didn't help matters. When we got there, there were only a handful of people climbing and two employees at the front counter. To put in nicely, they didn't really roll out the welcome mat. One of the employees was fine, but the other was pretty rude and definitely gave us the impression that novice climbers were an unwelcome nuisance. We were told that they "really won't have time to be available if you need help", so we gathered that we were pretty much on our own. Once we got out of their way and got settled in with the auto-belaying system, that same person came over and introduced themself and was super-friendly. It was very odd. Anyway, aside from the initial impression of the place and the staff, it was a fun experience. The auto-belay system is a great way to get started and there seemed to be a good variety of routes available. I would go back again, but I will probably try another gym next time to see if the staff are more friendly and helpful than those at this location read more

I've only been climbing about a year, but I've learned one important thing - climbing is very closely tied to ego. More so than other sports. Climbing gyms (like other gyms!) can feel very intimidating to those who aren't experienced, and it can be easy for a newbie to perceive some unwelcoming vibes, whether they're legit or not. I'm not saying I didn't feel this way about RJ1 at first. I DID feel a little out of place, at times even unwelcome, because of my very beginner-level status. However, after I started climbing there regularly, I realized it was me. Not the staff or the other climbers. Climbers are a strange breed, and they can be difficult to decipher at first. Their intensity and seriousness for their sport can be misconstrued for condescension, which usually isn't the case. Overall, I really enjoy going to RJ1. Their routes change regularly, so if there isn't a lot of beginner stuff for you, come back in a week or so and there will likely be more. I find it fluctuates, so don't write it off if your level isn't plentiful the first time you go. The auto belays are great - if you can work up the nerve to use them (they really are totally safe, I just can't convince my hands of that when it comes time to let go). The place is pretty big, although still expect some crowds after work in the off season (seems like the summer is a lot less crowded, more people are climbing outside!). The staff is reasonably helpful, although fairly introverted, so don't expect to chat. The 10-pack is a pretty good deal for those who don't want the commitment of a membership, and they usually do a punch pass sale around the holidays if you're looking to get one discounted. read more

I'm very new to rockclimbing so take this review with a grain of salt. My usual gym I go to (in Maryland) is about 3-4 times bigger than RJ so it's hard to write an unbiased review. I found the facilities to be clean and the staff to be very helpful and friendly. I'm just a beginner though and I found that there weren't a lot of 5.7 and under routes. I also tried the auto-belay for the first time here and contrary to warnings I was given, I actually really liked it. It pushes you to keep climbing because you can't really stop. I was told that the auto-belays are improved from the older, louder, more jerky ones so props for upgrading the system! I look forward to returning here on future climbs. read more

I've been here once so far. It's not my favorite but I'll definitely go back. When I first walked in it just seemed enormous. I think that's because it is. The thing I didn't like about it was the bouldering area and the top-rope climbs were very segregated. Since I only boulder that made it feel like about 2/3 of the place was off-limits. All of the stuff in the bouldering area is pretty steep, even the easy stuff. If I ever start climbing on ropes, I'll probably go here to learn. Partly because it's so large and it seems to have very high routes. They also have a few auto-belays which I think means I could go alone. They do have a separate workout area upstairs which looks nice. read more

When I moved to Denver I got a year membership to RJ and in general I don't regret it. There isn't really a better option in the Denver area if you want to climb roped routes. They have tall walls and a fair amount of variety at this location. The route setting isn't bad but I've seen better when I lived in Dallas. Yes there are better options if you want to go to Boulder, but I live in South Denver next to RJ2 so that isn't a regular option. Thrillseekers doesn't compare because their walls are so short. If you only boulder the RJs aren't the greatest and you would be better off going to Denver Bouldering Club. RJ1 also gets pretty crowded during cold weekdays so you may have to wait in line for a rope, but considering you don't have any other good options in Denver you have to live with it. I also think RJ1 is better than RJ2 even though I live right next to RJ2. I've found the staff really friendly at both RJs. I saw there is a gym opening up in Golden called Earth Treks which might bring some serious competition to the RJ gyms. read more

Yea I'm not a fan of this place. The staff was friendly, but the climbing was mediocre. I don't suggest going here if youbwant to boulder. I don't do any trad climbing so I can't really voice my opinion on the rest of the gym. The people who climb there were a little weird...some dude and his gf were making out in the bouldering cave...odd. Prices were not great. read more

I always loved climbing here, often 1-2 times per week, but never TRUELY appreciated how amazing R&J is until I moved to CA where nothing comes close. Seriously, I miss this place! PROS: - Excellent, fun, well-rated routes that get changed often enough to keep you interested if you go weekly. - Lots of great features like a crack to climb, overhangs, varying angles, very high walls, and lead-climbing only area - Automatic belaying devices that you can hook up to belay you if you go alone. (It's a bit scary at first, but great to have as an option!) - Love the owners & staff. I didn't go into the gym for two months due to a new job and received a somewhat sarcastic text from an employee asking if the should just cancel my membership because it didn't seem like I was coming back. They ensured that I wouldn't be returning. Extremely unprofessional as well as rude. On a full gym review, the sport climbing is great, the bouldering is limited but powerful, the exercise area is pretty average for a climbing gym, nothing as extensive as BRC, closer to what I've seen at the Spot. read more

While visiting some family my girlfriend and I wanted to check out the local climbing gym. The gym itself was nice and they had a good selection of rope climbs and bouldering. Where this gym looses massive points is the staff. While attempting to get belay certified the staff was very condescending. It's one thing to insist that it is gym policy to belay in a certain way, it's another to try and convince me that this way is the best way to do it and I will be safer trying to undo a decade of experience belaying using a different method. The pretentious attitude of the front desk staff made me feel unwelcome and ruined my entire climbing experience at this gym. read more

A friend convinced me to take the introduction class with her. We had so much fun! Then it comes with a week free. The instructor was very professional and fun. The facility is nice and I felt the workers and environment was inviting. This was my first time ever rock climbing and we even went back on our own. I like how the workers were there for questions but weren't hovering to make sure we were okay. I won't be doing a membership, but I'll definitely be back. :) read more

Love R&J -- it's the place I first started climbing, so will always have a special place in my heart. Their rates are really reasonable, and the staff have always been relaxed and very nice. They have really good setters, with interesting, thoughtful routes (that are often on the crimpy side), and it's nice climbing in a place that's not as busy as Earth Treks (although I do love the climbing at Earth Treks as well). The main drawback is that the walls are a little old, and they don't have the sculpting that some of the newer places have (compare to Planet Granites out in CA, or EarthTreks), but it's still good, high quality climbing. We split our time between EarthTreks and R&J 1&2, and feel lucky to have several options in Denver. read more

On one of the walls inside RJ1, it claims to be the premier climbing gym in Colorado. Maybe that was true in 97' (when they opened) but it is obvious that not much care and upgrading has gone into this place since. First the good: The walls are high. Clientele are generally friendly and polite. Then the bad: Holds are old and dirty. Seriously, every other decent climbing gym cleans holds between taking them off a old route before using them for a new one. There is no way this happens at RJ. I've seen holds that are completely blackened after a route is only a day or two old. Route setting is ok, but lacks creativity. Maybe partially since the owners don't invest in new holds to allow the setters options! Next to impossible to smear on the walls, texture is gone. For value, it's expensive. Cheaper day passes can be had at other gyms that are far superior in just about every way. The only reason I'll go back unfortunately is proximity. There's nothing else in Denver (besides thrillseekers). Denver desperately needs a good climbing gym! Come on owners of movement, please build one! Rock'n & Jam'n should think about changing their website address...calling it climbthebest is laughable. They're not even 3rd best in the state! City Rock (CO Springs), Movement and BRC (Boulder) come to mind. read more

I love this climbing gym!! It's huge and has tons of different climbs for all skill levels. They change up their routes frequently as well. However, it gets super crowded especially after work. I try to go at 9 pm when the off-peak hours hit. It's cheaper and a lot less of a crowd. One thing I didn't like about this gym though-the rates have gone up to $12 for off-peak. It makes me wonder if I should fork over the money for a monthly membership which is about $55. read more

Best climbing wall up here in the burbs. The route setters there are the best i have found in Denver as far as the bouldering problems go. However, sometimes an Int will be basically an easy Adv when and Adv will be a hard Int. Staff is great and so is the community. There are a few tools here who are along the lines of "Wait, this is your first day? Get off my wall and watch me flash this", but you are going to get that anywhere. Also if you dont have a membership it is $6 to go there before 3pm on mon-wed. read more

A friend of mine and myself got a Groupon deal for here a couple months ago and cashed in this past Sunday. We are not rock climbers in any sense of the word, so lots to learn! We met with out trainer Mike and had a 2 hour training and explicit explanation of what everything is/how to use it. If you need something like this, schedule it ahead of time because they have set times for training. By the end of training we did two climbs a piece with him and then we were on our own for as long as we liked that day. Mike was knowledgeable and you could tell he loves what he does. We came climbing on a Saturday morning and it was pretty quiet when we arrived. The first thing you notice when you walk in is that this gym is small. There's not a ton of space and not many routes. Almost everything was in the 5.10 5.11 range, which is fine for me but my wife, who is a more novice climber, had a hard time finding routes. The other challenge was that there aren't that many anchors, and they are oddly spaced so it can be hard to figure out what rope you're even supposed to be on. By the end of our visit there were kids all over the gym, jumping up and down on the auto belays and yelling throughout the gym. Usually kids don't bother me, I generally like them, but this was too much. I would only go to this gym if I lived less than ten minutes away, otherwise you're better off hitting up Movement in Boulder or Denver. read more

Class was a good deal and taught me what I needed to know. This place is huge, and was totally not crowded on a Saturday, which is excellent -- rare to find an uncrowded climbing spot in Denver. This was one of my least favorite rock gyms EVER. It's small in general, but the bouldering area is ESPECIALLY cramped, and the routes are just...not good. We didn't even bother with the trad climbing because it was so crowded. I would never go back here...I wouldn't even send my future kids to a birthday party here. There really isn't another choice in denver metro (not counting boulder). There used to be paradise but they shut down and the only other dedicated climbing gym in the denver metro is thrillseekers (which is about as good as bouldering up a fireplace chimney). RJ has 2 locations. Both are a bit of a drive from downtown denver. The cost is a bit high ($15 per entry) but its cheaper if you get a punch card ($120 for 10 punches) or a membership. I get a 6 month membership for the winter months only and if you get it with friends, its about $225/person. Routes here are pretty tall and they change them pretty often. The 2 negatives, its a bit far from denver and it gets really crowded in the evenings starting around 6pm. The south gym is better for the kids. They have a ladder they can climb and a slackline set up. read more

Always loved the $6 bouldering on Mon/Wed between 11-3 and 9-close. And the route setting is usually pretty good. But it's an older gym with older holds. Not much in the way of fitness classes or workout area. But I'd still return for a change up to my normal gym. read more

Lived in Denver last year and decided to try my hand at climbing. Learned to climb at R&J, fell in love with climbing at R&J, went from 5.5 to 5.10 in 3 months at R&J. Staff is friendly, lots of space, lots of routes, I thought they were good routes with decent variety and changed just often enough but not too often that you don't get to work on something you're trying to send. After joining, my friend and I went to R&J to climb 7 days in a row. We got a 6-month dual membership even though I knew I probably wasn't going to be in Denver for the whole 6 months, but in the end, they let me transfer the remaining time on my account to my friend's account! That was super nice - I think the official policy is that only half the time should get transferred, but they gave him all of it. I ended up still having about 3 months left, but it was still worth it to join because I went enough times that it paid off. Now I'm in Pittsburgh, went to the wall here, and it sucks compared to R&J. Like...really bad. You never do forget the place where you first fell in love with climbing! read more
