    Chocolatey mocha
    H V.

I thought this place was great! Glad I didn't check the crap reviews prior to deciding where to have breakfast. I had the porridge with walnuts, honey and fresh berries. So yummy and filling for a day of walking around Edinburgh. Other in my party: Avocado toast - excellent and very flavorful. Yogurt with fresh berries - very tasty Eggs and toast - really great Almond croissant - the bomb! The mochas were a little too chocolatey for my taste, but otherwise, a lovely dining experience. Staff was very friendly and we had everything out very quick. Although the place was very small, we had no trouble walking in and grabbing a table. Try it out!

This was the first of two shockingly horrible dining experiences of the day. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement, but I guess that's our own fault. We wanted to grab a quick bite for breakfast before heading to Waverly to catch our train to Belhaven. Having just downed two highly caffeinated beverages in the space of 40 minutes, I didn't feel like roaming around town trying to find something, so when we passed by The Square, it seemed perfect. No. To start, the eat-in space is tiny, and none of the four people working there took the time to communicate with the customers. We entered the establishment at the same time as another couple, and we both kind of stood around for a second wondering what to do, until we all just decided to pick a table (there are only four, and they're squeezed super close together; I literally had to move the table we were trying to sit at in order to get in, to avoid disturbing the couple that was already seated). We glanced at the menus on the table, and my husband went to place our orders. I wanted the breakfast meal with the eggs, smoked Scottish salmon and toast. My husband got to the counter to order, only to find that they didn't have salmon, smoked, Scottish or not. Put on the spot, I settled with the bacon. My husband ordered the French Toast meal. They were out of the juice that I wanted (also listed on the menu) and didn't have another option that wasn't bottled, so we made do with tap water. It took forEVER for our food to come out. We sat there, waiting for something to happen while the owner wandered the front room, talking on the phone and inexplicably propping the front door open. It was a bitingly cold and windy morning, and there was nobody coming in to make a delivery, so why he decided to leave the door open still confuses me. The couple sitting closest to the door had to ask him to close it, and he looked amazed that they'd request such a thing. While we sat there waiting (and waiting, and waiting), we got a show of the owner's conversation. Apparently, he'd just taken over the restaurant, and some of the paperwork he'd inherited was in disarray. He sat down at one of the tables to have a long and loud conversation with a service provider, going into great detail about accounts, promises, money owed and expectations. It was super unprofessional. Once our food (FINALLY) made it out to our table, I almost laughed out loud. We'd dropped almost £12 on THAT?! It was something I could have made at home. No, it was a sad imitation of something I could have made at home. There was no presentation, creativity or flavor to anything that was slapped onto my plate. And my husband's meal? My goodness, it was an insult. The claimed he'd get brioche bread, but what he really got was plain old white sliced bread. It wasn't garnished with cinnamon or powdered sugar, and the two slices just lay on the plate looking pathetic. The truly frustrating part was that the food wasn't even hot. It was barely even warm. For as long as it took to be served, I was expecting it to be piping hot and steaming away. Really disappointing meal - the first in two weeks of travel - and even more disappointing that we got stuck with this whole experience for our anniversary breakfast. Pass.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

The Devil's Advocate is undoubtedly a treasure to find in Old Town Edinburgh, especially if you…read moreaccidentally take the News Steps to get there, only to realize you should have simply taken the steps up Advocate's Close from Cockburn Street. But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

The Edinburgh Larder was the answer. We arrived right at opening. We were seated immediately and the place is casual clean and welcoming. The service was excellent and I got the traditional Scottish breakfast. Haggis and all and it was excellent, filing and worth walking in the light mist. The Mushroom Toast was very tasty according to my wife. The place is small and part of the larger establishment next door but still the same great food. You want authentic Scottish breakfast hot up the Edinburgh Larder and you will not be disappointed!

The server is very friendly and I ordered full Scottish breakfast to try out everything and chai latte. It came fairly fast and it was a very full dish. I tried all the food and they are all yummy. The blood pudding is not quite my favorite. And the bean with the red sauce is a little too spicy for me. But overall it is very good. Chai latte is super yummy and not overly sweet!

One evening in Berkeley, California, out to dinner with some friends at a Korean restaurant, I…read moreshared that I was heading to Scotland in July of 2019 and asked if anybody had been and had any recommendations for places to go. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.
