I live out of state now and am not interested in The State Paper. I was a digital subscriber at one time in order to follow the Gamecocks. I guess they have in fine print an automatic renewal and they charged my credit card in November over $300 in advance. I cancelled in December when I discovered the charge and found out in January according to company policy they can not offer a refund. Terrible policy and terrible customer service. Is the paper so disparate that they will take Advantage of their customers? boycott and trash the state paper until they start implementing good business practices. read more

My mom loves the newspaper because she loves to read and be up to date one what's going on in the world but when her September 11th,2024 addition arrived on September 16th, 2024 she had missed out on 5 to 6 days of news. Do not subscribe to The State Newspaper. When I moved out of state they refused to refund my remaining subscription issues, instead converting them to digital. When my subscription ran out they continued it without my approval, then sent me straight to collections without notifying me of the issue. Dirty, rotten and underhanded doesn't begin to describe this treatment. For shame. read more

I have been a State Paper Customer for around 45 years. I always had excellent service and it was reasonably priced. Then a couple years ago the service went down hill and the price skyrocketed. I would get e bills for different amounts and not know how long the subscription was for. Missed deliveries. We would call and they said we will extend subscription. Not sure what that would be and they couldn't tell us. The paper at the same time was getting smaller and smaller. Found out the paper has been sold to McClatchy ( a company that is buying up papers across USA) You call customer service and get someone out of the country that is very unhelpful, rude and on a script. Sent it cancellation notice with what they said was final payment but I am still getting a bill saying we owe more. This company is a complete rip off and a joke. Read the Donald Trump article about him being at the Clemson South Carolina football game. I was there and my take was 100% opposite his. We have overlooked many issues but when they cut the deliveries from 6 days a week to 3 and increase the cost we've had enough. I would hate to run a company with so many bad reviews. They send someone to a grocery store to scam me into starting a subscription. when I called and told them that I was upset that I was lied to, they scammed me into extending the subscription. Okay that does make me dumb. with a call to tell me the subscription was about to run out I told them to let it and that I did not want any more extensions. My paper should have ended on the 31st of May. I'm still getting calls to make a payment so they can restart my subscription. Apparently they're billing and subscription services don't talk. No stars for them!! I ordered the paper after attending a coupon webinar. Never got my paper. Called today to cancel. Spoke with Steven/ Julian. He refused to refund my money!! But they would "extend" my subscription an additional month. I'm not going to be in SC, won't do me any good. Since I didn't call about the missed papers, they couldn't give me the amount back. I told them prorate the 4 missed papers and return the rest to me. I asked to speak with a supervisor. I was on hold for over 25 minutes. Never spoke with a supervisor. He said it's policy that they don't do refunds. Really? Most good companies prorate and give you the balance, i.e. TV, telephones, etc. He was going to cancel my subscription on Sep 25, 2022. Really? Do it now, today not in September. This is poor customer service. I told him I would contest the payment at my end. He said they would not give a refund. I asked for the owner of the paper's name. Will see if that is correct. Will write him a letter and file with BBB. I think it is a foreign call center too. Other reviews are right! read more

A month ago I asked for home delivery first thing they did was took $34 out of my account I never seen a paper I complained everyday I even had a supervisor call me back once and beg me to take the paper for 3 weeks for free that somebody would definitely give it to me I'm in awheelchair and have no legs and can't get to the store tried reading him online but it just doesn't work. The State newspaper steals from its customers! I paid my subscription for a year and cancelled it due to numerous missed deliveries. When my refund didn't show up for several weeks, I called and spoke to a CSR in Colombia ( the country---not Columbia, SC) and he informed me that my subscription is cancelled and there will be no refund--my subscription is non-refundable! I told him that maybe that bit of information should be printed on the invoices that are mailed out to customers. Had I known that, I would not have paid in full for a year up front. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, he told me that he didn't have a supervisor. I would have given a rating of 0 stars if I could. Do not give your money to this company. read more

Heads up neighbors Just our experience but wanted to give a heads up. They took our monies for a subscription we paid for last November and we never recieved a paper. Tried multiple times to get it resolved. They continued to try and rationalize why they couldn't put the money back in the account yet. When I talk to them 2 weeks ago. They said that these things take time. I just filled a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Get anything in writing you can if you subscribe. A year ago I cancelled my subscription and the paper stopped but the billing didn't. I had the draft coming out of an account that I don't check often. When I realized they were still billing me I called for a refund and they told me that they had no record of my call to discontinue, but the paper stopped! When they called back to "retain" me as a customer I tell them what happened I am told that customer service will call me back. For the second time it is someone from the "Retention" department and the same conversation ensues. They are thieves and the paper is a rag, stay away from this organization unless you enjoy talking to someone from India when you want to ask any questions. read more

I had been thinking of cancelling my subscription when I got a $100 increase for my 13-week home/digital subscription. I might be a sucker because when I called today (2x because I couldn't understand a word of the first responder) the next person was much more articulate and talked me into extending my 13-week subscription for $169.00 when I had just been billed for $244.00. She immediately knocked down the price $75.00! I love the investigative reporting that all McClatchy papers do, and understand that those reporters have to be paid. I also understand that most advertisers that used to support the paper are now on line. That said, I appreciate the great reporting of the McClatchy staff and I know their snooping around is the only watchdog of big Government and its oligargiest (I don't think that is a word, but you know what I mean) contributors. Think of the local electric co-ops, big potato farmers sucking out our rivers, wildlife thieves, etc., all were reported on in The State, which did goose the honorables into doing their job. I have never been hassled so much by any company ever! Iwish I had never ordered their paper! I paid for 6 motnths service just to try couponing. They continue to deliver and BILL me after 6 months. I have not received a paper bill, I have asked for one in every phone call from them. They have called me more than 10 times, despite my telling them to cancel my service, send me a bill and not to call me anymore. With each phone call I have asked/told them to cancel my service, (it won't let me cancel online, where I ordered the paper) each time, they try to get me to change my service instead, I have also told them in each call not to call my number anymore and then they call back two days later! I call customer service to cancel and get the same thing as well as challenged by the agent that I've been sent bills, and that they "don't see where you have called us" (in reference to the 10 called I received from them). Yes, sadly this is as good as it gets. I've been a print subscriber since 1985. The price just keeps going up. A few years ago I said no more everyday delivery and went to only Sunday delivery and daily online edition. This simple subscription now costs me $8.40 a week. My delivery carrier is the best ever! But now I found that I can't even tip my carrier unless I extend my subscription. So 2020 will be a good year to totally cancel this ultra left wing newsless paper. read more

The state newspaper is slowly going down the tubes and is getting close to the bottom. At one time it was a great organization. Now it is just barely there! If you look at the online version you will see that there are maybe 5 to 8 news articles every day. just changes a bit to fit in differ segment of the paper. Now they have locked up the online version to the point that it is not even worth my time to read their very expensive ads. Sorry to see it go. read more
