Luckily I found this B&B on a popular hotel site for an extremely reasonable price. David, the B&B manager, was so friendly and accommodating. We were 2 hours later than we thought we'd be due to the border crossing. David put us at ease and was there at the front door with a smile on his face when we arrived. Parking was easy and right in front of the house. There is street parking in the neighborhood if the house's parking spaces are taken. David gave us a quick tour and told us what was in the area within walking distance. We were told to help ourselves to breakfast or snacks in the fridge (including ice cream bars). The house is large and very clean. You must take your shoes off at the door. There are slippers to use if you'd like. I am a stickler for cleanliness and I had no issue walking around in my socks. From what I understand there are three rooms available to book. The one we booked had a private bathroom but the other two share a washroom. Our room was well appointed with a desk, coat rack, vanity, tv, and hot water kettle. The bathroom has a shower and separate bathtub. Included are soap, shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryer. I'm so happy we found this B&B! Now that I know it exists, we will be back if we ever need to stay in the area.

I will repeat...FREE! The hotel was great at communicating when we landed to determine when the shuttle would be picking us up and the driver was very helpful and accommodating. Once at the hotel, the property was clean and well maintained. The front desk staff was so kind and helpful and we received FREE bottles of Spring Water upon check in. Our room was on the smaller size but it was clean and nice. The only negative with our stay was that the shower faucet was difficult to reach unless you step into the shower, so unless you know exactly where to get the temperature it is going to be alarming as you play dodgeball with either extremely hot or cold water. Once we were in the shower, the door mysteriously slid open, which invoked images of a poltergeist or some other form of paranormal actvity. The lotion and/or shampoo was running low and/or completely out. But this is a minor concern that a simple call would fix. One last benefit is that our hotel was convenient to Costco and local businesses so we could walk to get necessities that we forgot. I would definitely stay here again!

Room is a bit cramped but if you don't stay there long, it's fine. Pros: There's free breakfast everyday... You can make your own waffles and there's a few different cereals, fruit (oranges, apples, bananas), bread/toast, muffins, scrambled eggs, sausages, potatoes, and bagels. There's also free parking, which in a place that charges for any parking, it's a huge plus. It's also walkable to the Richmond Night Market a few blocks away and it's across the street from Foodyland, an Asian supermarket. You can also drive to Costco, which is a few minutes away and a cheap Esso gas station. There's also a free airport shuttle to/from the airport if you need it, which I didn't use. Cons: No access to gym and small breakfast area. You are eating in their temporary lobby area, if you choose to get breakfast. However, it's usually pretty packed so there's not much space for you to sit so you may have to eat in your room. No ventilation in the bathroom so your room gets a bit stuffy and humid from your shower so it's hard for your towel to dry quickly. There's a small window you can open in the room, but it doesn't help much. During our time here, our room's door didn't respond to our room key and they had to replace the battery in our door, which kept us waiting around for someone to charge the battery or replace the battery, which is a bit inconvenient. Would I stay here again? Maybe if it's cheaper and they have all their amenities available.

What exactly is Abbott Hills, is it a Bed & Breakfast or a Hostel? I've been around the world and…read morestayed at a wide variety of establishments, yet knowing exactly how to classify Abbott Hills truly vexes me. Definitions of the two are various and tend to blur the line further. Allow me to explain. For example, you will get breakfast at Abbott Hills, and a good one at that. From fresh local blueberries, cereal and toast for light eaters to a hearty Canadian breakfast complete with eggs, potato and meat for hearty appetites. But, I have been served similar breakfast at Hostels too- not to mention the fact that you do get a bed at either establishment. And yes, the owner, Phillip is very generous with beer and wine which is not a bad thing (something that is frowned upon at most Hostels). The owner is kind, hospitable, highly opinionated and loves to spin a good yarn. His autobiography makes Colonel Walter E. Kurtz look like a boy scout. On the other hand, a Hostel is a great lodging alternative for the budget conscious traveler and Abbott Hills is one of, if not the least expensive "Bed and Breakfast" spots in the Vancouver area. In fact, it was the least expensive "Bed and Breakfast" that I've ever visited. However, they do charge more than some Hostels that I've visited which were just as nice, if not better, and is at par with any motor-lodge in the area. So, what does all of this mean to the prospective traveler considering a stay at Abbott Hills? Allow me to break it down for you... Here is my scale: 1 (Low) - 5 (High) CLEANLINESS- 2 Forget the white glove; this place barely passes a grey glove test. The shared bathroom was creepy, filled with dozens of used personal hygiene care products from shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, toothbrushes (yes, used toothbrushes) and an entire drawer filled with old bars of soap from past guests. Who would save old bars of soap? Why? Also, the bath tub shower drain was clogged and I was up to my ankles in water in no time- YUCK! Ultimately, I rated it 2, because the towels and sheets were clean and there were no bed bugs. NOISE- 4 The property is located near the airport, but what's considerably noisier is that the property is situated on a main thoroughfare which seems to be a favorite cruising spot for every local 'Fast and Furious' car enthusiasts who's installed every conceivable exhaust modification to their late model Japanese sport compact car. Go Speed Racer, Go! AMBIANCE- 1 The building is a quadraplex (a building designed to accommodate four families) with each section containing three bedrooms, one bath, one kitchen and one living room. These units were not built to be aesthetically pleasing; they are utilitarian and cheaply constructed and as such offer little privacy (I could hear my downstairs neighbor snore throughout the evening). SAFETY-1 The doors are unlocked, room keys are left unattended and out in the open and invoices containing personal financial information are also kept out in the open and unattended. However, you are furnished with a key to lock your individual room (I was able to open mine with a credit card). In conclusion, I am reminded of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stewart who described his approach in defining pornography by saying, "I know it when I see it." Well I know a Bed and Breakfast when I see it, and Abbott Hills is not what comes to mind. But if your taste leans toward the bohemian, you will undoubtedly enjoy this inexpensive house of lodging and if a category does exist between Bed and Breakfast and Hostel, Abbott Hills would definitely fit. Hostel Breakfast, perhaps?

The representation online does not do justice to how dirty and decrepit the place is. For $60-80 a night I expect a clean bed. The owner wouldn't refund our money (it's probably how he makes most of his living, off cancellations that is). There are better deals to be had in Vancouver, and it turns out, it is so easy to get to the airport from the city on the train one doesn't have to stay in a run down hovel in the middle of no where to get there.

The shuttles travel pretty frequently, and you can just book your seat with the front desk. + Close proximity to some restaurants and the airport + Room was clean and had enough room for the quick trip. It also had a microwave and fridge. + Complimentary breakfast - it's pretty standard hotel breakfast food, but it's good if you're trying to save $$$ and just need something to get your day started CONS: + Under construction at the time of my stay so I think it's in the process of getting better in terms of aesthetics, but just not quite there yet. Still, this didn't bother me! + Gym was OK. Wish there was more in it, but it has the basics (dumbbells, treadmills, a cable machine) + it is a little loud being close to the road and all the traffic nearby, but they do have a noise machine in the room as well! + Not a lot of other amenities Not bad if you need an affordable option close to the airport!
