Beautiful ivy, just changing colors at the end of August
    Ruth D.

Traditional hotel with early to mid century charm right on the water! Sometimes you book a place in another country and think, "this will be fine," arrive and it is, you know, fine. Other times, you arrive and are so pleased you somehow made a reservation because how was it not booked solid? That was my experience with SH. I didn't realize that I'd be staying at such a charming hotel, right on the water, next to a joy-inducing art installation, and so near some of the best food in Vancouver when I booked my stay. I highly recommend the Sylvia Hotel. The ivy covering the hotel was just starting to turn shades of orange and red when I was there, but I can imagine how beautiful it must be when the season changes! That being said, it was warm when I visited in the summer (end of August) and my room did not have A/C. I was completely comfortable with the provided tall fan though, especially after putting it on top of the dresser/TV stand and faced it at the tall bed. I also want to mention that the shower was hot and the bathroom was sparkly. Another tip: Many tour providers also include transportation for their tour packages from the Sylvia Hotel.

I had a lovely stay in this hotel by the English Bay. Everything was comfortable and pleasant. There were many restaurants and bars nearby, just a short walk away. Walking by the beach at sunrise and at sunset was by far my favourite. The reception desk guy who greeted me was quick and direct with all the registration and payments, allowing me to enjoy the room and food services soon. I chose to stay here to celebrate my recent graduation from an intensive course at a local institution. The "Dine Out Vancouver Festival" offered some great discounts and gift cards. My room was around $150/night for 2 nights. Check them out every winter. You are required to put down an extra $200 as a room deposit on top of the booking prices. At the end of the bill, it came with Destination Mktg Fee: $4.00, PST Lodging tax-8%: $25.76, room tax-5.5%: $17.72, GST 5%: $18.28, depending on your room type.

Location is everything! This hotel is within walking distance of restaurants. It is right across from the bay. What a view! The hotel is dated but clean. It has lots of history. Don't expect much from the room and you will be surprised. We stayed the night before our cruise. We braved paying for a taxi and took the city bus. The Canadians were kind enough to help us find the right bus. Once we got on and off it was easy. I would recommend the place for the price and location. Service was pretty good too

The old Gal is testing on her Laurels now. Needs a serious upgrade. Bedding is always an issue for me when I travel. And Sylvia missed the mark once again. The pillows are filled with what seems like a thousand cotton balls. No fitted sheets. Bunched up mattress cover. Food at the Hotel.. ok now I know there is a staff shortage.. but a 46 min wait for a burger at lunch with half a dozen other guests in the restaurant. The Breakfast Parfait was a joke at 14 bucks. Frozen mini muffins...?? The standard practice of charging guests a hundred dollars a day for ( incidentals) is standard extortion in my opinion. In my case that was 700 dollars...just in case I had a meal or a drink and charged it to my room. Something that did not happen last year when I stayed. Ok yes it's refunded when you check out.. but still an expense some can't endure and an unfair gouge.. Coming back late to the hotel one night to find a dozen guests waiting for the two extremely small elevators...as the stairs are blocked after a time at night..was irritating on its face as there is no need to block entry to the second floor at all. The location on the Sylvia can be an issue if you don't like the smell of pot or cigarettes.. Don't book a room on lower floors or at the (back) of the Hotel..just saying. No.. will not be staying at the old Sylvia again..

Our five day stay was wonderful, except our last night. A family with their dog was staying next door and my husband almost called reception to complain about the dog barking around 10 in the evening. Everything else was top notch. We'll worth the money.

They are made on-site as far as I know. - Full bar with domestic and import beers, spirits including scotches and 6 beers on tap. Cons - A little bit stuffy in some way with metal plaques on the walls from old events, this place really has 125 years of history - A private member's club, so you won't be able to just walk into the venue to enjoy the view - There is one pulldown screen on stage and the projector was decent but could be a bit better - Audio was also not as loud as it needed to be and it was already on max - They had wired mics, no wireless Damage -A few thousand dollars. Protip - No free parking that I know of, only hourly and daily rates.

The staff were all incredible to work with, so easy going and approachable while organized and thorough. Our coordinator, Nicole, was full of great suggestions and responded to every one of our last-minute, frantic emails with grace and helpfulness. The bar manager, JJ, gave us everything we needed during setup the day of, and provided all logistical support with our dj, florist, and guests with a smile. Bar staff were full of laughs, good humour, and friendly. The venue is wildly charming, the main hall has a wrap around licensed deck that looks over Coal Harbour providing stunning views day and night. Our guests from the prairie provinces were in awe all night. Emelle's catering, exclusive caterer, provided food and service for the wedding and we couldn't have been happier. Food was 5 star, and service was friendly, efficient, and unobtrusive. Venue and alcohol service costs are very affordable, especially in comparison to other local venues. Can't wait to have another event there!

I really like this. Came here for the annual 12X12 exhibit. This is a photgraphy competition, friendly of course, but there are catches., with a new catch for this year's 2012 competition. http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/salt-building-vancouver?select=L_6w9BcDkIY4mFJkwd59SQ#Tauo1LC-G8fbqfxbek4lVA Each competitor must: 1. Take 1 photograph of a theme announced once, every hour on the hour 2. Intepret the announced theme in a single shot 3. 12 shots in total meaning you're on the hunt to interpret a theme each hour for 12 hours. 4. The photograph is on film. Not digital. 5. This year's catch is.... black and white film only. I've come out to this exhibit every year since it's inception. They had it at another venue in previous years, but it was horribly crowded and stuffy. This was a welcomed change, much welcomed. Maybe next year I'll do it. I'll have to dust off one of my film cameras.

(yes there are foundations in place to protect our heritage buildings, but I'm making sweeping generalizations here) When the Salt Building was first being revitalized during the pre-Olympic building-frenzy era, there was talk of the space being used as a pub or high-end restaurant or some other variation on that theme. Though it may have been entirely acceptable -- and maybe even great -- if that were the case today (and who knows, it may very well be the case in the future), but it almost seems as though that would be a bastardization of this minimal bare-bones structure. The building is gorgeous. Bookended with mammoth-sized windows, allowing plenty of light to pour in throughout the almost 14,000sq foot space, exposing the elaborate timber trusses and metal hardware, and shining of the polished concrete floor, there is not one thing I'd change here. It would be a shame to cover any of it up. A perfect event location, an ideal gathering space, an overwhelmingly stunning surprise in an area that is known for making everything "pretty," the Salt Building is, at this moment, a perfect homage to its historic past.

The foyer to the building isn't very telling or chic, but there is a grand piano stationed when you get off of the elevator, if you're into that kind of thing. Event planners and brides with the chops to transform rooms would probably enjoy their project. The jem of the Jewel is the patio, in my humble opinion anyway, especially with the downtown view it bestows on it's guests. Or, if you're into elegance that's just about retro, the room, as is, might be just your style. Bar staff are pleasant, their cash bar accepts credit cards and they have the usual suspects when it comes to beer and wine, just don't expect anything fancier than Granville Island or Sumac Ridge. Imagine the smell of a rug that hasn't been washed in 30 years and soaking-in nasty odors all day and all night. That is basically what the air conditioner smelled like. The "change filter" light was on, but that wasn't terribly helpful at midnight. We were hot and stuffy, but that was better than the gag-inducing smell of the air conditioner. We had a second room which was better, but we still couldn't run the A/C since the smell was the same, but fainter. If they service their air conditioners, this can be a decent place to stay.
