What's changed is the neighborhood... The central business district used to be well located for site seeing but pretty dead atmosphere wise. Just corporate buildings and workers. Quiet at night and silent on the weekends. Now, it's an amazing hub of activity with residents, coffee shops, restaurant, bars, shops and more plus the corporate buildings. The main drag, George Street, is now pedestrian only and relaxing to walk along. We look forward to returning again somehow, some way, in the future! We already agreed Mantra 2 on Bond Street will be our destination again! This time, my old friend, who is a local, invited me to The Vic On The Park for dinner. Through the street filled with lots of Mom 'n Pops shops on Enmore Rd, I arrived at the destination. It looks like an ordinary pub, but it has a patio in the back and even a basketball court! Wasting no time, I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel and a pint of beer. They had a pretty extensive list of craft beer. The chicken schnitzel was a bit different from what I usually eat. It was covered with ham and smothered with tomato sauce, somewhat leaning toward Chicken Parmesan. I guess the breading makes it more Chicken Schnitzel than others? But besides this little fuss, it tasted as good as it looked. Juicy-Inside-Crispy-Outside was perfect despite being endangered of getting soggy by the tomato sauce. A bit of a stretch from where I usually stay, but it's definitely a great place to be with locals instead of tourists.

This is why they are called hotels. It doesn't mean anything like a hotel you're probably used to if you're from the USA like me so don't expect more than the bare minimum if you're staying in any pub hotel. I just came here for the food and the pokies (aka slot machines, because gambling is a whole other weird Australian thing) for the quintessential Australian experience. They just recently revamped their menu and now offer pho, which may or may not be good. At any rate, I tried the chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and it was a darn good schnitty. Portions are huge and prices are good, which is a sweet relief from all the food elsewhere in Sydney.

But where are all the regulars? Beers available on tap are missing some absolute essentials, which may be why some regulars are also missing. But surely the lack of the essentials wouldn't put off all the regulars. So where are they? Why are they missing? I found the answer to that question as soon as I headed upstairs. Initially I was flooded with so much joy - new management has *not* repainted or remodelled what is a charmingly lit, niche space in the city for those of us who enjoy a quiet smoking area with our beverages. One of my favourite places to retreat in Sydney, and I'm certainly not alone in that. The walls of that special space have featured strongly in a particular online forum that values the fascinating history of these walls, and even the ceiling, with all it's wonderful textures and beautifully incidental markings. Each mark of wear is beautiful testimony to this being a well loved, quietly frequented secret room- This is the turret of the Castle. So where are all the regulars? This beloved space with it's wonderfully textured walls and priceless ambient vibe was entirely empty. Where's the guy who sits over there? And those three guys who take the table on the other side? What has happened to the one who sits in the corner reading? Or the blonde woman who has such a delightful laugh and who swishes her way through the room to her favourite table? Where are all the regulars? They are missing out on what could be considered a levelled up soundtrack to this little theatre above the streets of Sydney. So where are they? And then I saw it. I saw 'them' plastered all over the walls. The starkly fonted 'no smoking' signs; shockingly harsh interruptions to the gentle flow of this truly unique space. These signs are full stops. The end. The end of an era. So where are all the regulars? If anyone knows, please drop me a line and I'll come join you in whatever new place of solace you have found. I love the Castle, and I love this room I call The Turret. But that niche space, that quiet place to retreat.... it has gone. And so have the regulars.

It could not be better located . . . right across the street from the Circular Quay/Main Harbor. The Rocks nightlife area is a block away. The famed bridge is a few blocks beyond, and the Opera House is a fun 5-minute walk. The shopping district is an easy 2 or 3 blocks in the opposite direction. You absolutely could not ask for a better location. There were two slight negatives. First, the pool deck really feels like you are wedged up on a rooftop. We thought it might be a nice place to have a cocktail and view the skyline. For whatever reason, it has not been configured that way, although it seems to have spectacular potential. Our big criticism, though, is that we were there for 4 nights, over New Year's Eve. It was our first visit to Syndey, and the NYE fireworks have been a bucket list item for us. Anyway, the Four Seasons charges a huge premium for their "New Year's Eve" package. We obviously didn't mind paying the premium BUT, other than the room, you didn't actually GET anything for this "package." We had absolutely no idea where to view the fireworks, how to get into the viewing area, what the program was like, what time to go, etc. etc. There were 1.1 million people there. It was mobbed. It would have been nice for the Four Seasons to have had a little guide for their NYE Package guests. At the very least, the concierge should have had a little tutorial, rather than just vaguely waving in the direction of the harbor.

I got one of the newer rooms with a front balcony and blissful air-con on a very humid night. Check-in was fine. Service was friendly and efficient. The room and setting were as advertised. After a very quiet and comfortable night's sleep in a great bed, I used the discount voucher provided by reception to grab a light breakfast and coffee at a local cafe and enjoyed it on my balcony overlooking the park below. Reception also provided a voucher for free wifi. Would definitely go back if I needed to be in the neighbourhood. My tip would be walk up to the corner to pick up and drop off taxis as there is rarely any street parking and a double-parked taxi blocks the narrow street, annoying fellow motorists.

But each room has a little kitchenette if you're saving dollars by buying your own food.
