It is allegedly, along with two other pubs, the oldest pub in Sydney but I guess that's up to what criteria you decide to use. Note that it's a bit of a climb up from the main Circular Quay area, especially if you take the shortcuts. Regardless, once you arrive, it's easy to see that this is a popular location. It's called a hotel because years ago, any establishment serving alcohol also had to provide lodging - so there you have it. The pub itself is old and smelly (probably why all the windows are open), with a unique two level bar structure. There was live music on a Saturday night and plentiful picnic tables along both sides of the building. Theres hardly a wait at the bar for a drink and they many selections on tap and by the bottle. You can also order drinks and food from a QR code at the table - which we ended up doing for some quick bites. Coat of Arms Pizza - half emu and half kangaroo and it was pretty good (keep in mind using pub food standards). The tomato sauce had a bit of a sweet flavor to it and the meat (lean, as expected) had good flavor. The pizza dough is the soft chewy variety that reminded me of what happens when you microwave leftover pizza. Crunchy Fries - wide cut and comes with tartar and ketchup. Easy to munch down and goes well with beer. Lastly, the male bathroom was quite disgusting and difficult to breathe in. Like everybody else, I came here for the aptly named Coat of Arms pizza. It is a half-and-half pizza with emu meat on one side (with tomatoes) and kangaroo meat on the other side (with red bell peppers). I had to make this my first meal in Sydney on this trip, and here is why. The symbol on the national coat of arms of Australia is the picture of a kangaroo and an emu. Both animals are native to Australia, and neither animal can move backwards. So, legend has it that the symbol on the coat of arms was intended to represent a nation that is always moving forward. The pizza was very tasty, but the two meats were almost indistinguishable. My taste buds couldn't really discern the difference. This was probably because both meats were seasoned and cooked the same way, and had the same sauce drizzled on top, which might have masked the flavors of both meats. The place is old and rustic, very nice location and we had lots of fun. The beers on draft were great, I really enjoyed the fact you have a selection of IPAs and generally dark beers. The food was good, not the greatest but good enough for a fun night with guys. was not a fan of the nachos (leave the nachos for us USA south-westerners) but fell in love with the kangaroo pizza and emu pizza. The duck pizzas however was too greasy and smelled too, never had dick pizzas so can't say it should or shouldn't smell. Quick trivia - The Australian Coat of Arms has a kangaroo and an emu on it. These two animals were chosen because it is said that they cannot move backwards, only forward - which symbolizes progress. (But if you're Aussie, I'm sure you already know this, in which case, just bear with me) The Australian Heritage Hotel has something called, 'the coat of arms' pizza. So does anyone know why it's called that? You guessed it! It is topped with kangaroo and emu! (half emu & half pepper Kangaroo with red onion, bush tomato, capsicum & cranberries). This was my first time trying kangaroo or emu so I really have nothing to compare it to. It didn't really taste like any other meats I've had. It actually didn't really taste like anything - except for the sauce that they put on it, which just tasted really tart. I wasn't a fan. I wish I was able to taste more of the flavor of the kangaroo and emu. We also had the roast Peking duck pizza (mushroom, red onion, spinach, shallots, toasted sesame seeds, plum Hoi Sin sauce). They didn't skimp out on the duck slices, but they did overdo it on the hoisin sauce. The pizza was good but just a tad too salty from all that sauce. Last but not least, we also had the Mediterranean pizza (pesto & tomato sauce, garlic chicken, kalamata olives, spanish onion, roasted eggplant & mozzarella). This was pretty good too. You know how chicken on pizza is usually dry? This one wasn't. It seems like their other pizzas would be pretty good. just as long as you avoid the unconventional meats. Honestly, I came here only to try the saltwater crocodile pizza! PIZZA - The crocodile didn't taste as bold as I thought it would, which probably was due to the Thai herbs and coconut cream present. One of Sydney's rock star Rocks pubs, the best way to enjoy this joint is to head in for a prolonged Sunday sesh, start in the early arvo with some of their justifiably famous pizzas (you know you want to go crocodile and emu, you just know you do), and then grab one of the outside bench tables and sip your way through to dusk, making friends with nearby tables and passersby who wish they were having half as good a time as you clearly are. Our first pit stop of the Yelp Elite Peek Tour of the Rocks. Did you know that they had 140 beers? Well now you do. They also have a passport you can obtain and if you get all the beers drunk and signed off in your passport you get your name on a shiny plaque. What great incentive right? Perfectly enough for everyone to have a taste of both of em! We came, we tried and it was a good pizza... Flavor of the meat was slightly different but nothing super distinct that, if you were blindly served, you'd be able to guess was anything more than slightly off cow. For whatever reason, we had anticipated something that would have a stronger flavor, like rabbit or something. Anyway, pizza was good there and it was fun to try out! I did throw up a bit after our meal though but thats probably mostly because I don't normally eat meat lol.. Everyone else was fine :P We wandered around for about 5 min inside the bar area before finding out that there's no hostess and that you just order inside at the bar and find your own seating. I decided to put it in the back of my mind at the time as the main food offered are pizza's. Little to my surprise when we were walking around the Rocks area, there it was. How perfect I thought. My partner and I both wanted to eat lunch after a long morning sight seeing. We ordered the pepper kangaroo pizza and the selection of dips. The local beer I decided to have was the Fat Yak, while my partner ordered his usual Guinness. The selection of dips included a spicy bush tomato, hummus & baba ganoush with turkish bread. The bread was nicely toasted and fluffy. Out of the dips, I liked the spicy bush tomato and the baba ganoush. The bush tomato dip wasn't really spicy but more on the sweet side. The baba ganoush had a nice garlic flavor that stayed with me all day. The pepper kangaroo pizza was pleasing. The kangaroo meat was slightly spicy and it was tender. The pizza crust was crisp and not to doughy. The only thing that threw me off was that you have to pay for everything (food and beer) after you order it at the bar. The Australian is the quintessential Aussie hotel. Whenever I return from travelling overseas it's the place I visit first to ground me in good old Aussie culture. The split-level actually has the effect of turning the place into 2 separate bars, and quite often I will visit both when I go there, and hang out and enjoy the different vibes. They had a special brew on tap for The Ashes; they serve Coat of Arms pizza; and there is enough Aussie paraphernalia adorning the walls, bar and ceiling to have you naturalised on your first visit. The outdoor seating area is also sensational to relax and watch the world go by whilst you sip on a Scharer's lager. During the annual Beerfest or on Australia Day the streets surrounding The Australian turn into one gigantic human sardine tin, such is the iconic stature of the place. They are very delicious and worth trying! They have 2 of my favorite pizzas (peking duck and crispy pork) in Australia so far. There is a funny thing about the crispy pork pizza. There are more apple than pork in the pizza and it's too sweet for a gourmet pizza. I should call it dessert pizza instead of gourmet pizza since it's sweet. However, I still love it. So tasty! It is very much a bar with many smaller rooms that make up the overall space. We were seated outdoors along the sidewalk. You order both food and drinks at the bar. They have a wide and eclectic variety of pizzas to try. We ended up getting a split between the chili and tandoori chicken. I had never had guacamole on a pizza before and it wasn't bad! I'm actually quite surprised that I can remember all the places that I've been despite the fact that it's taken me almost eight months to actually get around to writing a review on the place. Anyway, this place isn't bad, though everytime I have been here (which usually ends up being a Friday) it is pretty packed out, but then again it is the Rocks, and I have come to expect that from the good pubs in the rocks. How can you not feel cool while having a schooner at one of Sydney's oldest pubs, possibly in the same exact spot where tired soldiers nursed their ales after the First World War. Yes, the Australian Hotel has stood on the iconic Chamberlain corner for more than 100 years, but it's location was on George Street prior to that, making this the oldest license in Sydney. I can drink to that! There is so much old time charm in this pub and I, for one, am glad they've changed very little over the years. Lining the top of the bar are old beer cans that convince you of the pub's heritage and authenticity. It's not pretty, it's not trendy, but it certainly is awesome. If you're peckish, there's quite a spirited menu here that will make even the more foreign of foreigners feel true blue in no time. How do you feel about crocodile on your pizza? You might find yourself ordering this crazy item just for the novelty of it. And for $19.50 for a regular, go for it! Heads up, you will get sticky and you'll have to wash your hands once you're done. If you share this with a bowl of chips (fresh and crispy) its enough for two people, easily. Tried a kangaroo pizza (forgot the special name for it on the menu). It tastes decent for kangaroo meat, other strong flavoured toppings are used to help balance the strength of the protein. The base is soft and cheese has good elasticity. The pizza size is good for one very hungry people or can be shared between two people who are just mid-range hungry. The dual levels is a key element to this establishment. Scenario: You have a few drinks on the lower level, you need to visit the bathroom and you find out that the male toilets are on the upper level. A group of 4 of us landed at 6:40 this morning in Sydney from LA and by 11:15 we were starving. We had heard about the coat of arms pizza and decided that would be our first meal in Australia. Needless to say, we were impressed. We arrived shortly before lunch started (since we were starving and all), but the bartender offered us drinks while we waited for the kitchen prep to finish. We ordered the coat of arms pizza, the pepper kangaroo pizza and the Australian pizzas along with crunchy chips and tomato sauce. By far the favorites were the coat of arms and the pepper kangaroo. Meat was well marinated and the flavors of both pizzas were well balanced. Not a fan of the crocodile pizza though, but maybe that's just how croc tastes in general.
