Making an appointment was quite easy after I'd described what I was looking for. When I arrived for my appointment, I was offered my choice of assorted coffees, teas & freshly baked goods. My jacket was hung & I was given a tour. The salon is quite lovely. Each time I've been there, the staff has always been friendly, thoughtful, patient, & helpful. They're a real team of skilled pros. After I've spoken w/Kelly or Elizabeth at length, they asked questions & made recommendations based on the shape of my head, texture of my hair, preferences, & other factors. They really took their time working w/me & /(the other clients, I noticed, many of whom I know). Then they brought me back to the soothingly dimly lit shampoo room. They played soft music & explained the products they were using before they began shampooing, thoughtfully checking my comfort level w/the water temp, etc. The bonus is that they give you a Wonderful head & neck massage while they're shampooing & conditioning! Next come the warm towels on the neck--ahhh! How luxurious! They cut & styled my hair, making light conversation w/me and the others in the salon. They gave me tips & guided me through every step of the way. I loved my hair & have gotten many compliments & inquiries. And, to boot, the prices were so reasonable. The stylist explained to me that their notes go directly into the computer, "so we can keep track of what we did step-by-step & the results. Then next time, we can either duplicate that or make adjustments." And, they all work together as a team, so if my regular stylist isn't available & I'm in a pinch, one of the others can pick up from there. They also help each other throughout the day. It's "A Paul Mitchell Focus Salon" & the owner, Catherine is also a National Educator for Paul Mitchell. All the stylists have ongoing education which translates into the latest techniques & styles! It's been quite a pleasant, satisfying experience each & every time, & they have a wide range of services that I'll be trying. I am so happy w/that I wish I'd come here sooner!! (--Would have saved me a lot of time, $$$, & aggravation). Parking is at the metered street level, so plan accordingly.

I had heard a lot of wonderful things about this salon, and Kiley specifically, so I was SO happy to be able to book an appointment with her. She really listened to me when I described to her what I was looking for in a hair style and we agreed on a layered, angled bob. She did an amazing job. I LOVE it. The salon is beautiful. Kiley gave me a little tour of the place before I sat down to get my cut and I loved the design. It was very warm and comforting to be there. The staff all seem really happy to be working there and working with each other. It really instilled confidence in me as a client knowing that the stylists are happy to be working there. After Christmas I went back for color and again, Kiley did a fantastic job. I was so happy with the results. It was exactly what I wanted. I think that if you're looking for a new salon, I definitely recommend The Hair and Color Studio. They're a very busy salon, so definitely call for an appointment first. But I promise you that you'll be very happy with your hair when you leave.

I was walking my dog…read morepast their door yesterday (yup, Saturday morning of a holiday weekend!) and realized how long it had been since I had had a hair cut. I poked my head in and asked if there was any chance they could take me at some point that day. Meghan said she could do it right then (even though she was obviously getting ready to leave) so I tethered my dog across the street in the shade and went back over. At some point shortly after I sat down, one of the other stylists looked out the window and noted that my dog was kind of standing in the road (at the limit of her leash) and asked if I wanted her to run over and bring her in. My dog knew exactly where I was and proceeded to race into the salon and make the rounds, visiting all the staff and clientele to get some puppy love (98lb german shepherd puppy love, that is) and then rested right by my chair. Actually, she was probably wondering why they weren't using the Furminator on me... Granted, you can get haircut anywhere, especially in Gloucester. Maybe half of those will give you a GOOD haircut, and who knows how much it will cost you. But to have local business owners who are focused on their craft - whether it's food, hair, whatever - and who have also realized that it's really about customer service is such a joy to find. In case you don't feel like reading this whole review, the bottom line is, if you're looking for a new salon, don't want to pay a ton of money for a good hair cut, and want to be treated kindly and with respect and humor, go see Meghan or one of the other stylists at Styles On Main. I wonder if they do dog grooming...

Sal is an intuitive genius when it comes to making you look good, and he loves what he does. But he's more than that. When a guy carefully deposited a bag of eggplants he had just picked, I knew I was in the presence of a beloved pillar of the community. You'll never find a better man. You don't find this ambience everywhere. Sal is the real deal as well. Quiet and gentle, he makes you feel like you have plenty of time and his full attention, even when other customers are waiting. He is not fussy, but very precise. His cutting is confident and quick. You can tell he has seen it all and knows what to do. The first time he saw me he was able to fix some things that the last barber (another "on location" haircut) had not done so well. In his gentle manner, he told me what to watch for and ask for. After visiting Sal's I met my four sisters in New Hampshire. Even my sisters said it is the best haircut I have had in a long time. Spending as much time away from home as I do, I really appreciate those rare finds- the people and places that make a town special. Sal's is definitely one of those parts of Gloucester.

Unlike…read morethe dress, which you've tried on many times and can pretty much count on how it's going to look, the hair and makeup are subject to the vagaries of the weather and the good memory of your stylist from the "trial run". Scary stuff. You need to trust the person in whose hands you choose to place this responsibility. A lot. I was shocked to see that the West End Salon & Spa did not have any previous reviews on yelp. This place is seriously fantastic. If you are getting married anywhere on the north shore, one of the first things on your to-do list should be to make an appointment with Angie at West End. I recently got married in Gloucester , and waited longer than planned to address the issue of wedding hair. Since we are not from the area (and this geographic region is woefully sparse in yelp reviews), I relied on Google searches, and was relieved when I found the West End was willing to squeeze me in for a trial appointment 3 weeks before the wedding. However, i figured i would keep looking for other options until my appointment, because, really, what are the odds of finding someone great with such a quick search? From the moment i walked into the salon, I felt that I had gotten very lucky. The decor is tasteful, homey and funky all at once. The staff seemed wonderful - not a touch of the snotty attitude you see in some salons. It kind of feels like everyone is family, but also not in the bad way that you see in cheaper places where they are yelling across the salon to each other all day. This truly feels like Newbury St at a fraction of the price - the holy grail of the spa consumer. Angie, the owner, took a look at my Eva Longoria-inspired wedding 'do photo and got to work. Within 30 minutes or so she had perfectly executed exactly what I wanted. The girl is a genius with bobby pins and a curler! Anyway, it was perfect - I loved it as soon as she was done, and she even made suggestions for a few small tweaks that made me like it even better. It was clear that she understood the vision of what I was looking for. The makeup was just as great... I was introduced to mineral foundation, which i worried would not give enough coverage for such a photo-intensive event, but it looked so flawless that I immediately went out and invested in my own to use everyday. Here again, it was clear that Angie understood that I did not want anything too over-the-top, and the palette and style she chose fit my personality perfectly. On the day before my wedding, I was back at West End for a mani pedi. That was definitely the point where my stress was at an all time high, but the calming demeanor of Jan, who did my nails, proved to be just the thing I needed. She is truly a lovely woman and took her time to do a fabulous job on my nails. Two hours later, I emerged calm and relaxed (not the ideal for a lunch-hour trip, but in this case it was great). On the day of the wedding, Angie came out to the inn with one of her employees (I wish I could remember her name, because she was also great). Angie recreated my earlier look just perfectly, and all four of my bridesmaids ended up with beautiful up-dos themselves. Just as I'd noticed in my trial, she never made us feel rushed (which means a lot on such a stressful day). I truly could not have asked for a better experience, and the wedding party agreed. I enjoyed my experience with West End Salon so much that I am making the hour drive back there this coming weekend to try out their eyelash extension service. I've been interested to try this for awhile, and the prices here are incredibly reasonable compared to places nearer to the city. I will post an update! Overall, if you live in the North Shore area, or are planning a wedding there, I would heartily recommend a visit - truly a place that deserves your business!

The whole experience was a disaster start to finish. They didn't honor my appointment time and had me wait over 30 minutes, did a TERRIBLE job with my hair, and to top it off charged me $40 instead of the $30-35 that was listed on the website at the time. I have normal/fine shoulder-length hair, not thick or course. I've never had such a painful blow out. The stylist burned my ear with the blowdryer, and left multiple round brushes curled (tangled) in my hair (why not use rollers?) and walked away while she took the trash out and started doing the towel laundry for the salon. So bizarre and unprofessional - I've never seen anything like this at a salon. My hair looked flat and frazzled at the end, and I was stressed out because it took way longer than expected and left me with not much time to do my own makeup before the wedding I was attending. If I had had more time, I would have showered at the hotel and redone my blowout myself. Oh, and she waited until the very end of the appointment to mention they were cash only - not sure why she couldn't have mentioned that when I was forced to wait 30 min when I showed up so I could have gone to the ATM them. Maybe they treat locals better here, but if you're in town for a wedding I cannot overemphasize AVOIDING this place at all costs.

I had a bridal appointment scheduled at Madeleine's Daughter for 2pm on January 10, 2026. Earlier that day, I found my dress at another appointment. Out of courtesy, I called Madeleine's approximately two hours before my appointment to ask if it could be modified to look at Mother of the Bride or bridesmaids' dresses. They said no due to scheduling constraints. I then confirmed I would still attend my 2pm appointment--I wanted to look at reception dresses and continue shopping with my bridesmaids and mother. Instead of accepting this, the staff told me they were cancelling my appointment because I had said "yes" to a dress elsewhere. I was immediately charged the $165 cancellation fee. I did not cancel this appointment. I explicitly stated I would attend. They made the decision to cancel on me, then charged me as if I had cancelled on them. I emailed that same day requesting a refund, explaining that their cancellation policy should not apply when the boutique cancels on a willing customer. Their response was patronizing--they assumed continuing to shop would cause me "financial confusion" and offered store credit toward a veil instead of a refund. This "solution" requires me to spend additional money while they keep my $165. I have continued to request a refund with no response. Bottom line: They cancelled my appointment, not me, yet they kept my money. This is unfair business practice. My mother bought her wedding dress here, and I bought my prom dress here years ago. I'm deeply disappointed that this is how they treat loyal customers.
