I'm not a musician. I can't play an instrument and probably never will. But I absolutely love…read morelistening to music, especially jazz, so visiting the American Jazz Museum was right up my alley. Located in Kansas City's historic 18th & Vine District, in the same building as the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, this turned out to be a fascinating walk through jazz history. The exhibits featuring Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington were highlights for me. I really enjoyed learning about the different pieces that make jazz what it is--brass, reeds, rhythm, melody, harmony, keyboards and guitar. The photographs, memorabilia, recordings and interactive exhibits added another dimension to the experience. What I appreciated most was that you don't have to know anything about playing music to enjoy this museum. I walked in simply loving jazz and walked out with a much greater appreciation for the musicians, the history and the culture behind the music. I spent a little less than two hours here and felt that was plenty of time to take it all in without rushing. If you're visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, don't overlook this one while you're there. The American Jazz Museum is absolutely worth the additional time. An enriching experience and an easy 5 stars from me.

So glad we came here!! What a great learning experience…read more Staff is super sweet and helpful. Museum is small but has tons of exhibits and it is well organized and decorated with a lot of interactive displays. Getting a glimpse of Ella Fitzgerald dress was one of many highlights for me. I had no idea how influential and historical Kansas City was to jazz music. I got to see the famous BLUE ROOM, we did not get a chance to have dinner or hear live music but you can if you schedule yourself accordingly. Parking is easy and free tickets are super cheap and they honor military discounts
