The music here is always great! And we love the ambience. The service is always slow, however. They only ever have one bartender and one server, and they're both slower than molasses. And as well as being slow on our most recent trip, the bartender (the woman working on 7/18/26 during Sons of Brazil) was an absolute mean, nasty a-hole. I went to the bar to get water after our server failed to bring it. Not moving off the back of the bar, she proceeded to tell me bottled water was $1.50. Okay, have tap? Her response? Did you buy anything? Wow! Pure KC right there, folks! Anyway, come for the music, but do NOT expect much of the service cuz it pretty much sucks each and every time. Boo to you! read more

I spent an evening at the Blue Room last Saturday attending a Glamour Profession concert- an 11 piece jazz band that covers Steely Dan. We bought tickets online in advance and showed up at 7:15pm for an 8pm showtime to ensure table seating. The place was empty and we sat at a booth just a few feet from the stage. By showtime the seats were filled and before the intermission, the space was full. The Blue Room is attached to the Jazz Museum and is one of only a handful of clubs in KC that continue to book jazz artists exclusively. The space is small intimate and designed and furnished well to harken back to KC's swing era. Our waitress Cassandra was the best and meeting travelers form Los Angeles and Manhattan made me proud to be a Kansas Citian with our jazz history. We can't wait to return. read more

If you are looking for the exhilaration and excitement of jazz music the Blue Room is no longer the place to go. Only a few months ago the Blue Room was a jewel of Kansas City. On Monday nights one could hear music that thrilled and have the musical experience of a lifetime with Jazz played by a variety of musicians and sung by singers of all ages and backgrounds. The place was regularly full with an audience that loved the music and listened instead of talking. But the recent new management clearly does not have an appreciation of jazz. They would rather have R and B or commercially oriented music. The new management seems to be determined to kill the great music that once lived there and unfortunately they are succeeding. It is now a disappointment and I don't take my lab or visitors from out of town there any more. A lot of musicians don't go there any more. The value system of the new management is questionable. The music they play between sets needs to be jazz too instead of fusion or R and B. It is clear that new management lacks the sophistication to run a jazz venue. Bottom line-If you want to hear something you can hear anywhere go the Blue Room. read more

This place is literally a part of jazz history. It is now a museum and club. I go there almost every time I go to KC. It does not serve food, but there are a lot of places around that do, and they allow you to bring food in. They have a full bar, and the prices are not bad. The other thing that I appreciate is that children are allowed. I truly feel like this will allow jazz to live on. Now, this place gets packed because it is first come, first serve. Sometimes they have free concerts and when they do have concerts that you have to pay for the prices are very reasonable. If you like jazz, you have to check this place out. read more

What a great place to hear live blues music in KC. It's located in the 18th & Vine area (which can get VERY crowded on the weekends. It's also a museum with all kinds of local blues music history. It's fun to walk around and read all the amazing stories of local KC music. The people watching is amazing, and the music is better! The atmosphere can only be described as authentic and real. it's not fancy, but you're there for the great music. The service can be spotty, but when it's really crowded, it's hard for them to keep up. I don't believe they have food, but we typically eat at the Soiree a few doors down. Unfortunately, it recently closed down. There are many other places in that area to eat before music. Make sure to check the schedule and get tix in advance if you can. Candlelight Jazz, organized by Fever! The show / band was super fun and entertaining. They did a super great job! The venue was okay - a bit crammed for the amount of people, getting drinks took a long time with such a small bar space. But I'm glad they had it! Also, there were candles everywhere, but we were pretty confused as to why they didn't turn off the other lighting in the room once the show started...? Why advertise it as a candlelight show if the other lights were kept on? We were kind of bummed about t They did ask us to leave about 10 minutes after the show was over. This place will become a staple for Kansas City. There is no food served but there are restaurants in the area to eat before you go. The floor service for drinks is okay but the drinks were mediocre. The atmosphere is electric no matter what band or artist you see. If you love music this should be one of the venues in your list. Came here on a Sunday evening to get drinks and listen to some music. It was a pretty nice place I love the ambience and all the history posted and used to decorate the place. I had not been here since I was a child in a school field trip. It hasn't changed much. The drinks were reasonable priced and pretty strong. I might have lived in this area for a long time without visiting the Blue Room but my jazz loving brother came to town and "forced" me to go with him. Thanks, Brother, for introducing me to such a great venue and experience. We arrived early for a jazz concert advertised on the website of the American Jazz Museum. Parking was easy and free, right across the street from the site. We got there early and had our choice of tables very near the stage. We definitely heard some very good jazz from the featured group, consisting of a drummer, pianist, and bass player. After they played a set, it was open mic night. I wondered if we'd have to sit through some very amateur and awful songs but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of acts that came up to perform. What truly made me happy was seeing a group of high school age boys come up and do a fabulous job playing jazz on the trumpet and sax. A few vocalist were also very credible. The venue is very small and intimate. There is a feeling of good friends coming together as regulars and newcomers mix among the musicians. The woman who served us drinks was proficient and gracious. I do wish they served even a very light food menu, as I don't drink. This is a place I will definitely return to and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys jazz. Or anyone who just wants to have a pleasant evening. read more

I came in on a Monday. Probably a bad time to try a new Jazz club. They had a rag tag group of white kids playing on the stage. Honestly, it seemed as though this was their first time holding their instruments. They let their house band close the show which was an incredible relief for my eardrums. Service was terrible. Slow, cold, and the bartender seemed very inconvenienced. I got a vodka in sprite that ended up being $9 for a 6oz rock glass overflowing with ice. Incredible place!! Went for the first time last night and the jazz band / singer were incredible. I had no idea the Blue Room would have all the history hung up on the walls and in cases. It was really quite interesting. A quaint little place that is perfect for a cozy evening. There isn't much decor and the set up is odd but they made the space work. My only qualm was that our waitress seemed a little rude. She didn't speak much and when she did it seemed like a chore to talk to us? It also seemed like she was trying to get us our or make sure we didn't run off before paying. (Which obviously we weren't going to do) I don't want to put her in blast because she may have just been having a bad day. Anyways. The Blue Room is a true Kansas City gem...wait, that's up the street...ok, weak humor...but it's a TREASURE! A working jazz club that's also a museum commemorating Kansas City's rich musical history. I have to admit to feeling a little bit out of place when we first walked in for Friday Happy Hour-the place was packed and it seemed like we were the only three white faces there. But the dapper older gentleman at the door warmly welcomed us and found us seats along the railing on the second level, looking right down at the charming Lady D and her band playing a lively mix of jazz, R&B and blues. In spite of the crowd, our waitress somehow managed to get us our drinks in very short order; I have no idea how reasonably priced they were, I was having such a good time I just handed her a twenty for the round and waved her on. It was fascinating, if a little uncomfortable, to read the old flyers from the early days mounted on the walls and under glass on the tables. This is a part of the American Jazz Museum, and it would be cool to be able to walk through the place when it's better lit and there's less distraction. But the music-that's the real tribute! read more

I'm closing out my KCMO Reviews with the Blue Room. We loved it. The three of us were there for an early evening performance by four young musicians. They were lovely. No cover, good drinks from bar at standard prices, excellent service, and great exhibits on the walls. I almost forgot free street parking within a block of the Blue. A number of the audience members appeared to be gracefully aging 1950s and 60s hipsters. The three of us had a great time. read more

I'm not a huge jazz fan, so I guess this review is from a casual observer's point of view. I was in KC for the weekend. In KC, if you're going to do anything, you do BBQ, and you do jazz. The Blue Room came recommended via Citysearch so the wifey and I decided to give it a shot. We were really happy we did. I'd have to say, from an outsider's view, KC is a small city. You can get from end to end pretty quickly and it makes for a nice weekend. But the Blue Room, as far as I'm concerned, it is THE perfect way to wrap up a pleasant and relaxed day. We were lucky enough to see Hadley Calimen make magic with his sax, and his band do the same with the piano and the drums and the bass. Seriously, we had a band during dinner do "jazz" too, and Hadley and the Blue Room put them to shame. Anyways, more on the Blue Room. It's got a cool vibe. It's quaint, the people working there are nice, and the drinks are reasonable (in the Bay Area, $8 for a beer isn't unheard of, so paying $4 for some good local brew is great). I really enjoyed myself and I'd definitely recommend the Blue Room for those people looking for a nice night out. That being said, I have no idea what a GREAT jazz club is like, so I'm leaving myself some room for error. 4 stars. read more

This is one of our favorite places in KC. Indigo hour on Fridays from 530 to 730 is one of our favorite things to do. Having lived in KC for 14 years, whenever we are back in town, we make this stop. There is no cover charge for this. Drinks are very reasonable and the live Jazz is unbelievable. Music lovers...you must visit. In high school, my senior class took a field trip down to Vine Street and I remember driving by (school bus style) The Blue Room and vowing to return. 5 years later, it's happened. Dreams can come true. I went with my stepmom, boyfriend from Chicago, and cousins from Branson to show them some KC old school jazz flavor. My cousin is a music major and plays the bass so he enjoyed it most of all. The Blue Room is blue, believe it or not. AND the tables have glass covering authentic memorabilia from Blue Room days of yore. The band playing was The Scamps and Geneva Price sang with them- she even sang "The Lady is a Scamp." =) Geneva sings at my church, The Unity Temple on the plaza so it was fun seeing her outside of a church environment. She's so cute and flirted with the little old jazz players. I think, nay, am positive that they were all secretly in love with her. During intermission, Lucky, the bass player came by every table asking for requests. We requested Kansas City- because it is the city that has our hearts. And... the only jazz song I really know. It cost $10 a ticket and drinks were cheap. Ask the bartender for a "really good drink." He wouldn't tell me what was in it- only that he'd invented it for those who weren't sure what to order. It was great and a big glass cost 8 big boys. MMmmmm. I'll definitely come back. It's a fun experience unique to Kansas City! read more

My girlfriend decided we needed to see a good old fashioned blues singer while we were in KC, and she found The Blue Room. I'm glad she did! If you get there early, you can get table down in front. If you get there a little later, there's some more seating on a raised area behind there. It's not optimal, but it's not bad. The staff was over the top, hands down super friendly. The guy that seated us was dressed to the nines! The band that night and the staff seemed very familiar with each other, and you can tell there are a fair number of regulars that go to shows. Everyone was lovely, and when it was dark, the street was beautiful. I don't know if I'll be back in KC anytime soon, but if I am, I'd love to go back to The Blue Room. read more

I love the Blue Room at the corner of 18th and Vine. It's so quaint and exactly what you think of when you want to go to a jazz and blues club. While it is literally a room; it's small and there are about 10-15 tables. The bar is across from the small stage, which is in front of the large window facing the street. It's very dark, but that all makes for the atmosphere and mystique. The night I went was after touring the adjoining Jazz and Negro League Baseball Museum. There was a lady singing, and her voice was beautiful. The whole affair made me felt like I should be in the 1930s, with a pincurl wave, stark red lipstick, and smoking out of one of those cigarette attachment thingys that is supposed to make you look more glamorous. If you like jazz and blues, or even have an inkling/urge that you'll like blues and jazz in the near future....I say check this out. read more

I have never been in a place where I feel like it can easily be seen in a film... which is to say that this jazz bar feels like a page out of the movies. The vibe is cool, the drinks are solid, and the music is rich and chill. I also liked that you could actually carry on (quiet) conversations without music blaring in the background. This would be a great place to catch up with friends or have a date night.
