Tip: The scotch eggs are delicious. The Toad in the Hole is a pub and restaurant in Osborne Village. It was there for years before I had moved to Winnipeg and this neighbourhood. It was open late on most evenings along with Papa George's that was up the street. The latter is no longer there. This eatery has gone through a bunch of changes over the years. When I was new to the neighbourhood, this eatery had two floors. The top floor had a traditional bar and restaurant. The lower floor also had a bar, but the artsy, younger folks spent time hanging around there. This place went through some renovations. If I remember things correctly, the basement got renovated and everything was on the top floor for months. The Toad in the Hole used to be on the east side of Osborne Street. When Buccacino's closed down further south and on the west side of Osborne Street, this eatery took the space over and has been there for a few years now. I have yet to see what the space looks like. Part of me wants to remember what Buccacino's was like before it shut down. The other part of me wants a scotch egg from The Toad. I love scotch eggs. I had my first one here. I remember the egg being soft-boiled. When you cut through the breading and sausage, the yolk would slowly ooze out. The scotch egg was deep-fried to perfection. Yum! I also liked getting its namesake. It was two sunny-side eggs in grilled Texas toast. It came with hashbrowns. You could choose from sausage, bacon, or ham as your protein side. I enjoyed the toad-themed breakfast menu besides the Toad in the Hole: - Tadpole (two eggs without being fried within toast) - Big toad (think English breakfast with baked beans, grilled tomato slices, and all protein sides) - Senor toad (tortillas topped with refried beans, sunny-side eggs, guacamole, pico de gallo, and cheddar) - Vegan senor toad (similar to the regular one, substituting the eggs for grilled veggies and the cheddar for a vegan version) The fish and chips are also decent here. The fish is pickerel, which was different than cod or halibut. It tasted fresh, which I loved. I don't recall ever having dessert here. I don't remember if it even served any! For 13$ the fish tacos were a bit bland. I thought a creamy guacamole was supposed to soak into the fish...The spicy green sauce didn't really hit the mark with me. 5 stars for the quality of the fish! It was excellently cooked! The old toad location used to be my favourite spot to hang, great live music and the vibes were impeccable, ever since moving to the new location across the street i am not that draw to it anymore, much smaller but a different vibe. We were there for close to 2 hours and were never greeted by a single staff member besides the bartender considering it wasn't very busy wasnt ridiculously impressed. +.5 for service Seems like a popular hangout spot on weekend nights. This place was completely rammed on a Friday night, which was indeed nice to see. The inside is quite dark and dingy, but I liked the ambience. There's also an underground club called The Cavern, which features local bands there every so often. Drinks selection is quite good. They have different drink specials depending on the day, which you should definitely check out. The drinks I had weren't too spectacular though. I found myself at the Toad on a Saturday afternoon ordering my first Little Scrapper pint. I thoroughly enjoyed the Scapper, but did find the bartender a little rude. The Toad seems a little divey to me and a bit run down. I remember the table feeling sticky underneath and there was a large hole in upholstery of my chair that looks like it's older than I am. I guess this is the pub everyone comes to hang out at during the weekends, but I kind of found it a little scary. Me thinks they need a renovation. Bartenders ignored me with cash in hand for almost 20 minutes! Finally get to serving me after serving numerous people some of whom had arrived after I had, and they had the audacity to speak with condescension when I mentioned how bad service means lost business, to which I was told "go somewhere else then." Great bartenders, good beer prices, interesting folk. Although many awkward run-ins with vague high school people I know but don't. "Hi Denise, how have you been?!" "Good, how are you" (Racking my brain for name...) "I'm great what do you do now? What school do you go to?" "I'm a bum who dropped out of University and moved away" "Oh.... ok see ya around." We stopped by while out for a friends birthday. It was during the day on a Thursday which meant it was pretty chill inside. The bartender was playing jams from his own playlist but was open to request, which was nice. Although it was not open yet, I guess there was a whiskey room and a live music venue all part of the establishment. We ordered a couple of rounds before leaving and during that time chatted up the locals, who seemed to be regulars, and everyone was super nice. Went here before lunch on a Sunday. As expected from a pub at that time service was going to be slow along with the food (as it does need to defrost). We ordered the Dusty Toad with house salad. It was a thick burger with their own twist, as expected from any decent pub. If you can't get a good overpriced burger from a pub, i can't really say much for the rest of their food. Anyway it had fried onion rings and mushrooms which were great. Though it had some jalapenos which I didn't like too much (forgot to ask them to remove it). I was having a blast. Some guy at the whiskey bar, I believe his name was Sam or Cam, I can't recall, asked me to stop laughing. I was kind of in shock. Aren't you supposed to go out to enjoy? Since when has laughing turned into a crime? He told me and my girlfriend to get off the dope, but in my country, dope is illegal. I've never even tried it. I was really offended. He also didn't make anyone pay their bill upfront, but asked me to. How rude. Everytime I come to WINNIPEG from Alaska I ALWAYS come to the Toad in the Hole. Now, while I do realize this is a pub, this was by far a comically horrible experience. Server bringing the wrote item first, then apologizing for offering a second unavailable option, then suggesting a third (to then pour it into a glass filled with ice with a quarter in the bottom of the glass; eww). We ordered food and then had another patron come by (I can only assume it was the server's friend) to ask us for our order again. Wow, just wow. Not busy either; maybe 15 people and most leisurely drinking. Also, in lieu of a "sorry there was a quarter in your glass" discount, we were offered shots. Keep it classy lady. read more

The Hole in the Toad is a hole in the wall bar - you know, the ones with character. The character - the toad - came with an accent! I would assume it is a British pub, as it has the British menu, but our bartender/server was from Scotland, and we adored him! I had the fish and chips. Very classic battered fish and hand cut fries. The tarter served with it was good, but I also enjoyed the vinegar that sat on the table. My BF had the burger, which was really superb. Different, but really had good flavor. The bar had a good selection of beer and was refinished recently. The floral chairs should be the next to go. However, it was a jolly great place for lunch - even though we were the only ones eating there. read more

Friendly crowd, and a lively atmosphere; makes you feel you've walked into a scene from an authentic English pub. Shockingly rude bartenders. Rolling his eyes at me, acting annoyed that I'm even speaking to him - I ask him politely what they have on tap and he shouts "READ THE SIGN!", which I of course did not see. So I pay for my two beers without tipping (I work for tips too and would never act this rude to a customer) and as I'm walking away, he shouts across the bar "WOW, NO TIP, COOL THANKS SO MUCH, APPRECIATE IT!" Nice place in Osborne to hangout with friends. Beers are cheaper which is a plus, went there twice once for a birthday party and one to just hangout would recommend this place to hangout at. However the mens washrooms doesn't have doors and is near the back door, so in winter there is a cold draft. read more

I realize that this was an afternoon which would be normally very slow time that we got in was probably about 5:15pm on a Sunday. The server was a not available as we walked in so we seated ourselves, normally that would be OK as it's a pub. Then I went looking for them to get a menu. They were busy playing with the music selection. I asked for a couple of menus, and all she could find was one at the moment. Then later when we win we're ready to order she took our drink order. But got them mixed up. The Seiter tank was apparently not working well so it came out really really fall me, and she served it to us anyways, and couldn't replace the exact same drink. She offered a different drink different type of cider, and when she brought that drink it apparently had a quarter in the bottom of the cup , before she put in the ice. And then we got our drinks sort it out. We waited for a little bit. And then we noticed that she's having some difficulties with the order. So she invited a friend possibly somebody who works there but currently was not working, to come over and sort out our food order. Then when she brought us the food it was still confusing because she gave the orders to the wrong person. There were only 2 of us. Later when we went to pay I showed her the quarter in the bottom of the glass she did apologize and offered us shots as replacement. As we were heading out the door I didn't have time nor felt like having a shot but no other offer for compensation was made, such as not paying for the drink that had the quarter in it. The other server, the friend, was outside at the time having drinks with her boyfriend or friend. So all in all it was kind of an awkward experience I wouldn't recommend going there in the afternoon unless your expectations are really low. Then it would be absolutely fine. read more

The Whiskey Bar - A dive bar that happens to stock very rare expensive whiskies I am reviewing the Whiskey Bar, which is owned by and attached to The Hole in the Toad, it is really an additional room/expansion to the pub. It has been promoted as a place where sophisticated people can relax and enjoy upmarket whiskies. The room itself appeals a little bit to Old World tastes, with a fair amount of hardwood, oak moulding and wainscotting. The bar stools are hardwood and curved/warped in the middle, so not uncomfortable. The tables match the stools. Just about all the patrons are poor walk-up millenials who prefer cheap beer. If the intention was to attract high-rollers willing to spend $35 for an ounce of 18-year old MacAllan whiskey, it's a failure. The bar is not comfortable, it borders on raucous with traffic flowing to and from the main room, and it is not particularly clean. There is no table service. Parking is so-so, it might be possible to park on the other side of the street after 7, there is a metered parking lot on the other side of the street at the end of the block. The last straw was the washrooms. There are no doors on the stalls or anywhere, it's wide open, they are filthy, lined with graffiti and the urinal is a trough. No place to hang a coat, which may get stolen anyway. I went home rather than use it. My idea of a whiskey bar is The Devil's Place at the Hotel Waldaus in St Moritz. Now THAT'S a whiskey bar. For relaxed enjoyment of a good glass of Glenfiddich, go to the lounge at 529 Wellington instead, reservations are recommended on weekends. The closest I have I have been to an English pub in Canada. The mens washroom was the most nostalgic aspect of the visit, a real "bog".

I used to go to the toad for birthdays and for drinks and dinner (for about 17 years). They used to have great food and friendly staff. Back in the early 2000's their toad in the hole was well worth the wait. Now it's bisquick mix and a sausage instead of yorkshire pudding and quality bangers and home made gravy. I liked thier new whiskey bar. Now some of the bar tenders are incredibly rude and the food is terrible. I ordered a beer that had a winning label on it and I tried to enter it in my phone right away and it said the prize was already claimed... I bought the beer, I should get the prize. Another time I had chicken fingers FULL of long blond hairs. When I brought them up to the bar the bartender gave me a really hard time and even tried to insinuate that I put the hairs into the fingers. They were baked into the breading and my hair is not blond. He said, "what do you want me to do about it?" Really rudely. This was the third time I'd sent back food because of really gross food prep in a year (different staff each time) I haven't been back and I won't be. It's sad how far this pub has fallen. read more
