The Grove is located in a bit of a historic-looking area. However, as with most of Winnipeg, the streets were pretty much deserted. The venue is split into 2 sections as you enter. Go right for the restaurant, and left for the bar. Once you go inside though, it's really just one big room, with the bar area in the middle. Maybe it was a Monday night, but the place was deathly quiet. There was some background music, but NOBODY in the bar was talking. There were a couple of TVs showing NFL. But they were muted, so the place was still deathly quiet. As for the rest of the interior, there was definitely a homely British feel to it. I had a chance to drink their Strongbow beer ($7). Seemed like a much better deal than their bottles. As an appy, I had Chevre & Pequillo Pepper Croquettes. These were nice and gooey, and were quite enjoyable. For dinner I had the steak and mushroom pie. As a side I had the mixed green salad (the other options were Caesar salad, fries, or cabbage and sausage soup). The pie was really just a bowl of cooked steak and mushroom bits, with a baked "top" crust that you could literally pick right up in one piece. The filling was a bit too salty, but was other pretty good. The mixed greens were a bit on the bland side, but this is healthier as well. The owner definitely has the right idea. Too bad the population of the city is so spread out.

A British pub selling 16oz "Pints" but stellar service and a menu at a decent price worth coming back for. My Harvard burger was hand packed and well seasoned goodness. The house salad got devoured first because of the well balanced dressing. My dates 'mac n cheese pie' was just a run of the mill baked Mac n cheese. Given that it was called a pie and touted as coming in a pie tin we were looking forward to trying a very new take on the dish. It was however just a small basic baked Mac n cheese in a normal baking dish that I would skip ordering next time. A pint is only 16oz in the USA. A British pub in one of the colonies with a serious soccer fantasy league should feel shame for the misnomer. A pint is 20oz. Sell a 12 or 14oz as well if you want to offer options to go with your well sought out draught selection. All in all we'll be back:)

What a great little hole in the wall restaurant... I had the scallop appetizer which was incredible considering the geographical location. For my meal I had the Dorchester burger which was great! The atmosphere was casual and encouraged conversation, no loud music or 55in screens. And the staff were attentive and polite. An awesome choice for a late lunch or early diner with a few drinks.

    quinoa salad with croquettes. delicious!

Great food. Fries have great flavor and texture and the Harvard burger was fantastic (jalapeño mayo, juicy bacon and a grilled pineapple).

Poutine was decent - not the best I've had in town but not the worst. The portion was very small, and I was surprised to see it priced almost as much as an entree on the bill - they don't have it on the menu a la carte but you can upgrade a side of fries to poutine for $4. Since the pasta dish didn't normally come with fries I asked if they could just do a side of poutine and they said yes (and then charged $14 for it). It wasn't worth it. The blackened chicken fettuccine was disappointing. Our host highly recommended it, and it's a dish I generally enjoy enough I even make it at home. The blackening rub they use had almost no spice, which to me defeats part of the point of "blackened" chicken - the taste was more on the herby side. The noodles themselves were bland and the sauce was almost non-existent - sadly underseasoned. I chopped the chicken up into tiny bits and mixed it all together so that they flavors from the chicken could add at least some excitement to the pasta, but while it helped it didn't quite save the dish. Overall the experience was fairly mediocre. Maybe I should have gotten a burger, but I went with the host's recommendation instead for a dish I normally quite enjoy and came away disappointed. The price of the side of poutine is on me - I didn't ask ahead of time. But it came out to be nearly double what I'd expected for half as much as I'd thought it would be.

Awesome food and service. Great selection on the menu and atmosphere. They have big screen TV's to…read morewatch all sports!

It was open late on most evenings along with Papa George's that was up the street. The latter is no longer there. This eatery has gone through a bunch of changes over the years. When I was new to the neighbourhood, this eatery had two floors. The top floor had a traditional bar and restaurant. The lower floor also had a bar, but the artsy, younger folks spent time hanging around there. This place went through some renovations. If I remember things correctly, the basement got renovated and everything was on the top floor for months. The Toad in the Hole used to be on the east side of Osborne Street. When Buccacino's closed down further south and on the west side of Osborne Street, this eatery took the space over and has been there for a few years now. I have yet to see what the space looks like. Part of me wants to remember what Buccacino's was like before it shut down. The other part of me wants a scotch egg from The Toad. I love scotch eggs. I had my first one here. I remember the egg being soft-boiled. When you cut through the breading and sausage, the yolk would slowly ooze out. The scotch egg was deep-fried to perfection. Yum! I also liked getting its namesake. It was two sunny-side eggs in grilled Texas toast. It came with hashbrowns. You could choose from sausage, bacon, or ham as your protein side. I enjoyed the toad-themed breakfast menu besides the Toad in the Hole: - Tadpole (two eggs without being fried within toast) - Big toad (think English breakfast with baked beans, grilled tomato slices, and all protein sides) - Senor toad (tortillas topped with refried beans, sunny-side eggs, guacamole, pico de gallo, and cheddar) - Vegan senor toad (similar to the regular one, substituting the eggs for grilled veggies and the cheddar for a vegan version) The fish and chips are also decent here. The fish is pickerel, which was different than cod or halibut. It tasted fresh, which I loved. I don't recall ever having dessert here. I don't remember if it even served any! I hope that the pub is nice. It used to have happy hour deals that were decent. I want scotch eggs now! (359)
