A complaint to management was blown off as unimportant. I don't think they care if they have your business or not. Certainly not mine. As a local, I've got other choices. Other restaurants in the area actually have better service. I was hoping to spend my dollars locally and share the love amongst all restaurants. I won't be back to this one though. Do not recommend. I looked at the menu and I wasn't extremely hungry, but maybe something light so I told her I didn't want to pay a lot of money and waste the food because I don't take home leftovers. She said nothing. She mumbled as she was walking away very fast and then came back with a children's menu and it kind of threw me back a little and I looked at it and I said I don't want anything on here. I don't want tater tops and french fries She threw her hand back and said then go somewhere else and ran away from me. I sat there with my mouth open as I have never been treated like that before never I'm 83 years old. I got upset and I had the fork and napkin in my hand, and I threw it on the seat and called her a name and I couldn't believe that anybody a waitress would treat you that way . Then I went next-door to the bakery part as I was walking out the door a customer said go over there they have sandwiches and I said oh that's nice. I will go over there so I go over there being upset and the girls I told them about it and they were sympathetic with me and I said well let me talk to the manager and you know I don't think it was the right thing to do so I waited a few minutes and he came out and I told him started to tell him what happened and he says well I would've done the same thing to you were very rude to her. He did not want to hear my part of the story whatsoever I was extremely upset, and I did carry-on, because it was my worst nightmare that I ever had and I just lost control of yelling. And some man customer come up and he got right in my face and was pushing me. It was so horrible thing. I'll never forget. I will tell everyone about this. she took her bad day out on me. I was so disappointed in our meal Sunday. They left the bacon out of the meatapalooza omelet and cut back on the toast. The Rueben sandwich had three chunks of corned beef that were half an inch thick and you couldn't bite into it. Looks like they are still working from a scaled back Covid menu too. Other than a terrific waitress the experience was not a good one. I called to talk to the manager this morning and she was not helpful at all. As a longtime customer I would have appreciated her listening to me instead of being dismissive. We spent a hundred dollars for six meals and left a great tip. Not the waitresses fault the cooks messed up. The restaurant was not busy either. We were the only ones on the non fireplace side. The chicken fried steak is above average, and NOT the usual mass-produced, frozen hockey puck. The real surprise, however, was the waffle. She requested it crispy (which you seem to need to do anymore everywhere to get something not soggy), and was rewarded with a perfectly cooked, unusually tasty waffle. Really, really good. read more

We have a ton of nostalgia for this place. We used to come here several years ago when we lived in Portland. Unfortunately, I have a sneaking suspicion that the restaurant is now under new management. Gone is the warm, friendly, homey atmosphere. We arrived here to celebrate a special occasion. The hostess did not great us, just said, "two?" She wanted to seat us in the dark "hall" by the cash register so we asked if we could go back to the main dining area. (The restaurant had only 3 other diners at the time.) She just trudged on. But when we asked for a booth by the window it sent her over the edge. She walked well ahead of us and literally dropped the menus on the table with a loud "PLOP!" I said, "thanks, that was pleasant." She did not say a word and just toddled back to her desk. Waitress took a while to get our order. But she never returned to check on us. I needed to flag down another waitress for a coffee refill (and she was not pleased.) We also had to flag down our waitress for our check. Two stars are for the food which was as good as we remembered: pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and bacon. This was never our experience from past years. It's unfortunate to see that everyone who works here is so miserable. We have been going to this place for over 25 years. Always order our meals with being very pleased with everything. Our favorite has always been the chicken fried steak. Tonight's chicken fried steak was tasting different. The steak was greasy, the gravy was off color and every part of it was just tasted off. We didn't eat even half of it. When you normally bring something like this up to your amazing waitress and she tells the manager about the item you would think you would at least have the manager come talk with you. Not at all. We weren't asking for a free meal. What I did expect is that a customers concern meant enough for a quick conversation or "I'm sorry". I was very disappointed. If you had a zero or a minus number...that would be more appropriate. Service was ok, but our waitress didn't know the soup of the day. Disgusting, horrible "food". I ordered grilled salmon with tater tots. I actually got tater tots with grilled, greasy salmon bite. Two-thirds of the platter, literally, was filled with tater tots, which were crispy, hot and ok. The salmon was about a 1/4 inch thick by 2 inches by 1.5 inch and "swimming" in oil. Extremely greasy. Tasteless. Horrible. My husband ordered the mac & cheese with brisket on top. His dish seemed similar. A platter full of mac & cheese with a little brisket on top. He said the brisket tasted good, but the mac & cheese was tasteless, although it appeared to be real cheese - just watery. Very expensive. Should have complained about the food but didn't. We were embarrassed that we thought so little of the food because we could see that the other people really liked it. Luckily we live out of state so we can't return. read more

Overall the food was good. They currently have dine-in and did a good job with social distancing. We've been there 3 times and each time the quality of the food was consistent. I had chicken fried steak and it was good. The gravy is either brown or white sausage so I chose brown. I'd prefer white country gravy without sausage. That seems more like a breakfast gravy. They also serve a good portion so I felt like I got plenty to eat. My wife had the Cuban and really loved it. The brisket in the sandwich was delicious. Kids enjoyed their meals too. This is a good local place to come and grab some food and drink if you're in town for business like I was. The food was really good and the portions were generous. One person in our group got their Mac and cheese with bbq brisket on top and I was surprised at how much brisket they gave him. Solid deal. Four of us tried this restaurant for the first time tonight and were quite pleased with both the food and the service. My wife and her mother chose the calamari appetizer with a bowl of navy bean and ham soup. The calamari consisted of thick steak size pieces. It was crisp on the outside and tender inside. The sweet chili sauce was a good accompaniment. The bean and ham soup was also declared delicious with plenty of tender ham chunks. I had the brisket three cheese Mac and cheese. While the cheese sauce was a little grainy, probably from the parmesan as one of the cheeses, the flavor was really good. And the brisket was so tender with a nice bbq sauce. My mother selected the mixed meat grill and declared her brisket and pulled pork to be just as tender as mine. The sausage was nicely grilled and flavorful. Also the baked beans had a gentle heat kick which made it a perfect side. Several negatives include dinner rolls which tasted closer to frozen pull apart rather than from their in house bakery, a caesar salad dressing which needs more anchovy, and the inability to order a drink from the attached saloon with dinner. Waitress was great despite being all alone, but food was bland and not impressive. The blt didn't have much bacon in it and it was over cooked. The bacon cheeseburger was not seasoned at all and just not good. The cheese was all melted off so you couldn't tell there really was any cheese on it. Will not be back. I was disappointed in the breakfast that I received here. The pancakes were tough and too thick, the home fries were dried out and chewy, but the ham was great. Also the ketchup in the Heinz's bottle was not Heinz ketchup, it was grainy and pale appearing, with a bland flavor. I will not be back. read more

Help! Your little coffee shop/gift shop needs coffee help BAD! We have been stopping here for years to get pastries and every once and a while I think "oh I'll try the coffee again" but sadly.... the lattes are terrible they don't have knowledge of coffee. Shots are watery, sat in the shot glasses and turned bitter. The brewed coffee is like water even the dark roast. Just add some more ground beans in there. Eek! And staff is always so apathetic and bleh. Your pastries are so fun and yummy but we need some good coffee with them and a good atmosphere. I actually threw my coffee away and went to Joes Donuts for coffee :/ read more

I can safely say for years and years this was a favorite place we'd go when heading back to the mountain after being in town. They used to have the best roasted chicken I have ever eaten. Then then we started seeing changes inside with the decor and on the menu. We inquired about some of the changes and the girl told us the grandfather had died and he had wanted to keep it exactly the same way and now they were free to make changes. For the most part, they should have left it alone. The booths used to be private enough with dividers, so you weren't in on everybody's conversation. There was a time I was asking the waitress about the calamari and the table behind us, got involved in my order. A more recent trip yielded us senior citizens on a road trip, getting drunk at 11 am, hooping it up like they were clubbing on a Saturday night. How do I know they were on a road trip? There are no dividers cushioning the noise levels here, and I knew way more than I ever wanted to about that trip. They drowned out the conversation at my own table. The waitress attitude here is varying. On our last trip the waitress was cold and acted like she'd rather put the pencil through her eye than take another order. She never came back to check for refills either. The prices have gone up and portions shrank. I had ordered a Turkey sandwich and fries with a salad. The salad was basically iceberg and an onion ringlet and the fries were very skimpy. We no longer go in here for dinners or lunches, but have gone over to the bakery for pastries. That is the only place I feel safe to go in and not catch attitude. read more

A perfectly fine place to replenish the calories your body burned while doing outdoorsy things on Mt Hood. The food was fine enough, the staff was incredibly friendly and good at their jobs, and the atmosphere... well, it was clean! Beyond that, I can't much say I'd recommend The Tollgate Inn. But then again, I wouldn't NOT recommend it, either. Three stars it is. The menu is definitely broad, with all of the standard American comfort foods, plus a few surprises. I ended up getting the chicken fried chicken, which comes with two sides. I got mashed potatoes and broccoli. The dinner date had the chicken pot pie, with a side of tater tots. Both meals were just laughably huge! Like, a family of 4 could have eaten that pot pie. Both seemed pretty underseasoned, as well. Personally, I liked the pot pie better. Neither would I go out of my way to order again. As I said, service was great. A few different staff members checked on us throughout the meal, and they were all as friendly as can be. We were never left wanting for anything, and our food came out quickly. Once we finished, we were given boxes (massive portions, remember?) and the dishes were cleaned right away, as well. They certainly take pride in their job. If you can't tell, I'm not big into this type of business. But give credit where it's due: they run a good restaurant. I don't know for sure that I'll be back, but I sure hope that they do well! read more

Adequate. The reason I describe Tollgate Inn as adequate is that for some reason there was a slow time getting seated. Two ladies were at the front of the line ordering food to go. Behind them were no less than six parties of people waiting to be seated and there were plenty of open tables. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich. It was tasty but the corned beef was sliced thick. You could have called it a corned beef steak! I prefer Reuben Sandwiches with thinly sliced corned beef. Staff is friendly and helpful. The front area with Nick Knacks and candy looked nice although the candy was pretty sparse and in need of restocking. I'll give it another try sometime perhaps for breakfast. read more

This review is specifically for the Bakery/Gift Shop, Not the restaurant. My parents moved from Seattle, WA to Bend, OR last year. The Bakery at the Tollgate Inn is a stop we HAVE to make on every trip to and from home for a mid-drive pastry and coffee pick-me-up. We have enjoyed the soup and sandwiched offered at the bakery as well, when pastries wouldn't quell our appetites. My cousin raves about the cannoli (and rarely shares!) My mom and husband bonded over their mutual love for the mini German Chocolate Cakes. I order a different muffin every time. If you stop by in summer, enjoy one with seasonal fruit- like raspberries. The connected gift shop is very cute and kitschy. Whoever does the ordering for them is quite creative, their merchandise and displays are always changing with the season/holiday. The Tollgate Inn Bakery is a pleasure to patronize. read more

Just had lunch there, was great. I had the charbroiled Chk sandwich. It was really flavorful and tastey. The roll it was serverd on was made at the bakery next door Delish! Server was on point and friendly. My Pop had the veggie beef soup and you could tell that was homemade as well lots of big chunks of beef. Mum had the Chk pot pie, and I repeat homemade, and huge. I've been here twice now. I stopped here with a friend last year. We were on our way to Redmond, hungry and didn't know where to stop for a bite to eat before we headed out of civilization to no-restaurant land. We spotted this place and decided to give it a try. We weren't dissapointed. The food was very good homestyle cooking and the prices were very reasonable. Any item on the menu could be two meals (which they will happily split for you). Some could be three meals. They serve you hot, homemade rolls before the meal. Loved those! The waitress and server were very nice and constantly checked up on us. It almost became a joke to us how often we were asked if we needed anything. The food was good. I had a club sandwich which came with a huge order of fries. They had several other options for sides including a dinner salad. I wanted the fries though. Well, my sister's car broke down the other day out near zigzag and I had to go get her along with her three kids. They were really hungry and wanted to stop at a Red Robin. I remembered this place though and had to try it again. We weren't disappointed. Excellent service again, even with three kids that had energy to burn. The service was perfect and everyone enjoyed thier meal. We took quite a bit of food home with us too. Good food, great prices and excellent service with a smile. What more can you ask for? Review for the bakery - special occasion cake: My mom ordered my baby shower cake from Tollgate Bakery and it was SERIOUSLY AMAZING. The carrot cake was sooo unbelievably good. And she did a fantastic job on the decorations; it was adorable and exactly what we wanted (my mom showed her a picture from pinterest). And the price was really good - much less than what we were quoted by various bakeries in Portland and Gresham. We will be coming here for now on for any special occasion cakes! read more

Easy to get to off the main road there, and a large parking lot... mostly empty just coming into the lunch hour. Decor is quaint with lots of antique kitchen tools and paintings. Food was ok, but nothing to rave about or drive all the way back out there for dinner anytime. Service was friendly, but a little slow. Generously speaking, strictly mediocre at best. Country diners can sometimes be remarkable gems of delight, but Tollgate fails in every important regard. Painfully slow, inconsistent and inaccurate service. Food quality that clearly shows a tremendous lack of care or ability on the part of the kitchen and a "cut every corner" attitude. There's not even a low price that can justify the experience. We were served eggs Benedict with eggs poached until solid and rubbery and "Hollandaise" that was blobs of cooked yolks floating in yellow oil (which was absolutely NOT butter), French toast with egg only covering the center of the bread (bare edges and corners) also served without real butter, and it's accompanying side of fruit and syrup had to be reqested. Oatmeal had the consistency of paste and the extra side of toast ordered never came at all. Anywhere else within a few minutes drive should be able to provide a markedly better breakfast. read more
