After the last review the owner sent me gift certificates to cover our meals and come back. This time we had the French dip with tater tots which was fantastic. we also had the rib eye also great. Super cute place, really good food and great service. The only gripe I have is that it's REALLY bright inside. When I walk into a restaurant at night, I don't want to be blinded by the light. It made my experience less enjoyable. I get having brighter lights in the family dining side but we were in the saloon. we have coming here for quite sometime now. service is great the food was delicious, and the drinks very well made. unfortunately tonight was the last we will be having our dinner dates. sadly everything in regards to food has been nothing but disappointment barley was able to pad our stomachs since we had a drink. unfortunately not even when I'm intoxicated would I be able to eat the meal we were served. Really cute environment that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. I love the little store you can shop in. Restaurant is clean and staff is friendly. They have good beer on tap more than the basics you find in a store. Great for families with kids. Located not that far from the Ski Bowl Mt Hood. We had breakfast for four today. The plates of eggs and bacon also come with three large pancakes if you want. The pancakes were very good. It was so much food I couldn't eat the rest of the day. my husband and I came in for dinner with our 2 grandchildren before a football game tonight and had the best experience we have had in a restaurant in a long time. the food was amazing, best cooked prime rib ever and my granddaughter loved the clam chowder! Our server was a very nice, knowledgable lady I believe her name was venessa. As I sat down I notices a sign that says "Who is John Galt." Thinking of Ayne Rand made me lose my appetite, however I thought that maybe the owners had no idea what it meant and thinking about people having no idea about Atlas Shrugged made me feel warm and hungry again. After reading the menu and deciding what I wanted, I got bored waiting for the waitress to comeback to take my order (about 15 minutes), no it was not busy at all, so anyways I read the back of the menu which gives the background for the name of the restaurant. It tells the story of some guy in 1840 who built a road, at the edge of the treacherous cascade trail and put a tollgate at the entrance. He charged the wagoner's who just braved the trip, losing family members and livestock to it, 5 dollars to pass. 5 dollars in 1840 was a month's pay so of course most of the people could not afford to pay. They couldn't afford to turn around either so they ended up trading their livestock and other good. They named the restaurant in honor of this asshole, so yeah they probably are Randians. So the melancholy waitress finally showed up and I ordered the farmers omelet, which came with onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, ham, bacon, and sausage. The menu says that it is a 6 egg omelet and that made me think it was going to be too big to finish, but I was willing to try it anyways. After waiting half an hour the meal arrived. The omelet was the size of any average 3-egg omelet from any other restaurant. As I took a bite I tasted pizza. The second bite also tasted like pizza, so I examined the insides. There was a smidge of bacon, a lot of cheap ham, and a ton of those little sausage balls that come on combination pizza. The omelet was not enjoyable at all, I did finish it though, but that isn't saying much because I will finish a bowl of topramen if I paid for it. The hash browns were disgusting though and I did not eat them. The toast was delicious. It was actually really good toast, probably the best I've ever had, and that is why I am giving this place 2 stars. IDK I'm probably going to get sick later, but I've been to 3rd world countries so I'm not that terrified of diarrhea. Even though this place was a bad experience and the owners obviously have a love for ruthless capitalists, I still tipped the depressed waitress. Yes she sucked at her job, but I'm sure there are a million other things she would have rather done with her life and is probably under paid by Randian owners. read more

If you want family dining as you head up highway 26 to Mt. Hood, be sure to stop in at the Tollgate Inn. They serve up fabulous comfort food, and since they have their own bakery on the premises, anything dough related is to die for. Be sure to get a loaf of bread or two, or four. Also, once you have had your breakfast, lunch or dinner fill, stop into their bakery and check out their sweets, like cookies and pastries for that road ahead. You won't be sorry. We finally left because the girl came and wrote down how many people were in the 3 groups standing there and just walked away after seating one group. So many empty tables and another gal just kept looking at us all and walking away. If it takes that long to be seated and be ignored how long will it take to get food?! Probably won't be back. The fact that the restaurant was full of seniors on a beautiful Sunday in June should've been my first red flag. We ordered French toast, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and patty sausage. The toast was burnt, hashbrowns tasted fresh out of the freezer, sausage was way over cooked and chewy, and French toast was eggy and chewy. There was absolutely no sweetness to the French toast. The eggs were the only thing I don't have much of a complaint about. Everything was very bland though, hinting at their clientele. I would say to avoid this place and hit Shari's or somewhere comparable in Gresham on your way back into town, instead, at least for breakfast foods. I would like to mention that it's quite possible that their dinner/lunch menu is much better, seeing how that's what most of the good reviews are reviewing. read more

They also had lots of cute gifts, unique candies, a to-go fresh snacks fridge area, and a sit-down cafe. Not crazy about Bridgetown coffee (and they make their espresso drinks super sweet, even more than Dutch Bros. if that's possible), but it's worth the trip alone for the baked goods. The rolls were homemade as we're the dressings. We left being so happy and wanting to come back. So we decided to drop by the bakery. Pick up a few things possibly.... Wow. The people in the bakery were SO rude. It ruined our experience. Now, if you go do try the restaurant.The restaurant was great. We have been eating at Tollgate with our family and friends for 10 plus years. The reason we loved this restaurant is because it not only had great food but has fabulous rolls which my son with a food disorder could eat. We would travel 45 minutes to get there. Tonight we had a very embarrassing situation arise when after we ate our meal and began to pay the waitress was sent out to our table to inform us that the packaged yogurt and peanut butter our son was eating with the rolls was not allowed in the restaurant as it was against the law. We left embarrassed and hurting for our sons embarrassment as he has dealt with his food disorder his entire life and was called out publicly. BAD FORM Tollgate Manager. We will have to find another more sensitive restaurant to enjoy meals with our son. I did speak with the manager by phone when we got home who said the waitress misspoke about being against the law but they were just trying to stream line there food distribution policies. I asked him what he was going to do when families come in with crackers and baby food for their children but he had no answer. read more
