Whenever wè played a round of golf in Chatom we always went to Jakes to eat and discuss great shots from our round. The food was always point on whether fried catfish, hamburger steak, or the Thursday night special of AYCE spaghetti. The service was always excellent. Servers working together to keep glasses full and orders served in a timely manner. Being an LSU fan was another great reaso to dine at Jake's. LSU memorbilia on all the walls!!! As I was traveling through Chatom Alabama this morning, this place caught my eye. I was hungry and…read moreneeded a large breakfast. This place did not disappoint. It's easily one of the best breakfasts I've had since I last visited the Pacific Northwest. Now, I love me a good omelette (and shame on me for not remembering the name of this one on the menu) this monster is loaded with bacon, sausage, ham, bell pepper, onion and cheddar cheese, expertly cooked. Everything was hot, fresh and mouthwateringly delicious! This omelette came with a choice of hash brown patties or grits on the side, and choice of toast or a freshly baked biscuit. I opted for the hash browns and the biscuit, both of which were fantastic! The best part of this whole thing was that, the omelette, the hash browns, the country gravy, the biscuit AND the coffee totaled $9.95 with sales tax!! And even better than that, the small town hospitality was genuine, warm and exceptionally friendly. They were so welcoming and pleasant, that I know I will return here again soon for the hospitality, the great food, and the awesome price! I'm looking forward to trying other items on their menu. If everything is as awesome as this breakfast was, I may have just found a gold mine! If you're passing through Chatom Alabama, and you're feeling hungry, this is the place to stop!

The chef needed to par boil until tender before cooling down... all this before hitting the deep fryer. Flavor was good, but tough and chewy. My 14 OZ Delmonico Ribeye was cooked a perfect medium-rare, had great flavor, and overall was a quality cut of beef. The garlic mashed potatoes were served hot and fluffy, but they were not a stand-out, just your average mashed potatoes. They were real, though... when others uses instant. Props for that. My seared green beans were hot and fresh and tasty and very good. Now the bad..... 1. I called hours in advance and asked about making a reservation and was advised that they don't take reservations. Wrong answer.... yes they do. We waited for about 20 minutes but were in no rush, but we observed a few other couples announcing they had a reservation and they were seated ahead of us..... so whomever answered the phone and advised that Edgers does not take reservations,,,,,, yes you do! 2. Service was fast but not good. The server did not come around to offer re-fills on our very empty beverage glasses.... and she brought the dinner rolls well after dinner had started as she admitted she forgot. She did not suggestive sell a desert and instead just brought us our check. 3. There is no music and the dining room is loud because you sit on top of a concrete floor with chipped paint everywhere.... cheap and nasty looking, not worthy of a steakhouse. The cheap turquoise curtains dragging on the floor covering the metal blinds are tacky at best. The hostess station is pure 1971, needs ripped out. 4. The décor was horrendous. They advise "casual country club attire", which is very funny as many, ahem, "gentleman" in the dining room had on various baseball caps... one guy was in flip-flops... and this place is not even in the same county as anything close to a country club vibe.... 5. While they do have cloth table cloths and napkins, sitting in this very poorly decorated and run down less than cafeteria atmosphere reminded me of sitting in the middle of a 1970s funeral parlor show room. I was looking for a casket with a dead guy laying in it.... 6. Presentation needs a complete revamp! No water served, no garnish of any kind, really nothing "nice" about this place except for the funeral flowers sitting in the middle of the converted garage, I mean dining room.... Great food. Quality food. Service provided by staff who would not know how to do a wine service, a staff who are very nice people, but a staff who have never eaten in a fancy restaurant in a first-class city like New York, Boston or San Francisco... foodie environments. Is this a prom date destination? NO Is this a place to impress your date? NO Is this a place to have a business dinner with a new or perspective client? H&%$ NO Is this a place that is no frills with decent food? Sure.... go for the steaks but nothing else....

I hate it when restaurants serve a huge side salad. The asparagus were cooked good and seasoned well, and the baked potato was pretty good as well. Both of the steaks were very under-seasoned. We seasoned a lot with table salt and pepper but it was still a little bland. The meat was thick, so that's why it was lacking in seasoning. The au jus was okay and a little bland as well. Besides the flavor, the steaks were cooked perfectly and the fat pieces were nice and buttery with the meat.

After looking at the website and photos, I began to wonder if we were dressed nicely enough! We made a 5:00 reservation (online), walked in at 5:02, and were immediately greeted with such a warm welcome that we instantly felt welcome. Our server recommended the pineapple lemon drop--absolutely delicious! The house salad with the warm bacon dressing was magical, and my husband loved the peppercorn ranch. Both ribeyes were cooked to perfection, the green beans were fresh (definitely not from a can!), and the mushrooms were packed with flavor. As we were leaving, we stopped to take a picture and learned that the friendly young woman who had welcomed and served us was actually the owner, Semmes. Her father purchased the restaurant in 1990, and after his passing in 2024, she proudly took over the family business. Watching her interact with every guest, it was clear she genuinely loves what she does. She was a ray of sunshine to everyone who walked through the door. I also loved seeing her dad's antique car parked outside--a sweet tribute to his legacy. If you're from the Meridian area or just passing through on I-20, do yourself a favor and stop here.
