I feel the price is a bit high as the amenities offered are the same as the regular cabins ($80-$85 per night). The firefly did just recently add a window AC unit and one electric plug prior to our stay. There are no lights so a lantern is still needed. We didn't use the charcoal grill as it was rusted, we opted for cooking on the fire instead. They do not allow outside firewood and they charge $7 a bag for wood and $5 for kindling. Unfortunately their firewood was very thinly chopped, maybe 1-2 inch slivers so the firewood didn't last long. The shower and bathrooms were clean and close to the campsite which we enjoyed. The area felt very safe. Though there appeared to be a ring camera with lights just above the open showers which I found a bit odd, I assume it was pointing to the other side of the building. Easily accessible dumpster and water for cooking/washing dishes. Parking is very hard to come by so if you bring more than one vehicle this may be a problem. The cabin was well kept, clean and comfy mattresses. Lights didn't work on the upper balcony but we enjoyed the lower deck. The only thing I found off putting were over kill on signage around the campsite. Quiet hours with a $250 fine for noises past 11pm or before 7am, signs regarding usage of amenities .... It appeared they didn't really want you using too many resources. Overall, we really enjoyed the cabin, the addition of the AC was great, facility was well kept, but I felt it was over priced.

The hike itself was fairly easy and can be finish under a hour. It is dog friendly, fairly shaded, and trail is well marked. You can sit down on the rock ledges and look at the incredible panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is a small parking lot. It's a perfect spot for a quick getaway from the city, whether you're going for sunrise, sunset, or just a relaxing day outdoors. After can hit up Bear Chase Brewery close by.

The historic grounds and Appalachian Trail access make it a great place to explore and learn about the area's rich past. My only warning: the gnats were INSANE. Not just annoying, but absolutely relentless. We were constantly swatting them away and ended up cutting our visit short because they were so bad. I had to use my phone to find one gnat that was lodged in my eye ball socket, this is while I was wearing sunglasses that it had found its way in. If you can tolerate the bugs (or come prepared with bug spray), it's well worth a visit for the history, scenery, and unique connection to both the Civil War and war correspondents. Just don't underestimate the gnats!

The park has ample parking, public restrooms and a number of picnic shelters. There is much to see and a few nice hiking areas. The camp host was very active throughout the day and gave great local recommendations. Negatives - you can't really see the river due to the grass and trees. It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.

There is a nice picnic area near the parking area with some grills and benches. The walk along the path is beautiful with nice views of the Potomac river. Walking up the path you can access the WSSC water plant. Beautiful place for a nice stroll or a bike ride on the C&O path - family fun guaranteed!

C & O Canal Tow Path nearby? It is right off the tow path. Plus parking is onsite. Minutes away from the city to feel like you're in a remote area of nature, but close enough if you need to get back to the city in 30 minutes. The original Swain Lock is onsite, but also is currently under construction surrounded by a chain-link fence. It might be a little tricky, but you could kayak from here too. I am not sure what the regulations are on it, but it didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to jump off from this site to get into the water.

I drove up to the entrance at Greenbrier State Park at just about 9am this morning and told the…read morerangers that I just wanted to go fishing in my Kayak for a few hours and was turned away because I did NOT have a Reservation and all of the Day Use areas were full already. Excuse me!?!? - All I needed was a parking spot and a couple minutes to blowup the kayak and launch it on the 42 acre lake. I had no intention of hitting the beach or swimming or playing Volleyball or soccer or buying any concessions and what the hell, I could have even peed in the woods but NOPE - No room for you since you didn't make a reservation. Since they were specific about "Day Use" areas, Maybe I should have told them that I was camping (even thought I had no camping gear) and gone ahead and paid for a Camping spot? Then I could have driven my truck down to the DAY USE parking lot next to the lake and launched my kayak out onto that 42 acre lake? It doesn't really matter - I won't go back. I am a MD Native and resident but I also have a West Virginia Fishing License and that is probably where I'm going tomorrow. I can only imagine how this incredible reservation system works. I'll bet that I can make my 7 Day IN advance Reservation EVERY day with no intention of ever showing up (and wasting the opportunity for somebody else to enter like happened to me today) and I bet I could put 3 or 5 or 8 people on my reservations since they want to ACCUATE number of Visitors for each reservation (However many can fit it 1 CAR) and never be questioned about why I wasn't showing up cause you know damn right and well that some of those reservations go unused (and they sure didn't say anything about Give me your number and we'll call you if we have a cancellation or If they don't show up by 2 pm or whatever. I'll bet that half the people with Reservations aren't even showing up until afternoon (if they don't outright cancel for whatever reasons) and I was only planning on fishing for a few hours to start with. Like I said, it doesn't really matter- I won't go back and deal with that nonsense again. I needed one parking space and just a couple minutes to blow up eh Kayak and launch it on the 42 are lake and I would have been gone a few hours later (and I am strictly catch and release as well so I won't deplete the fish population either but NOPE!!!!! No Reservation = No Room for You! I had really hoped to be on the water shortly after sunrise but the part doesn't even open until 8am anyway. I'll find some other alternative since it was too difficult for the State Park to satisfy my excessive expectations (a Parking Spot) - I was in My Pickup - an overflow grassy spot will do just fine Thank You! I'm done with this nonsense.

The bathhouse was clean and had hot water. Most campsites only have lukewarm or cold water. There were also an abundance of toilet facilities and they were well maintained/cleaned. The view of the Potomac was breathtaking and the only downfall was that the camping sites are relatively close to each other both on the mountain and at the river's edge. I do recommend this center, however, and we will likely return when back in the area!
