I had the pleasure of staying in the Poet's Loft with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day weekend. Was a great experience and something different than a typical Airbnb! She is always filled with laughter and kindness and generosity. I had wanted a quiet stay immediately after my divorce. I instinctively decided to spend a peaceful time in Frederick. I was lucky enough to choose this charming place. The home is a beautiful Victorian style home filled with charming little alcoves and corners throughout. My charming 4 poster bed was wonderful to sink into and my lovely bathtub and bathroom was luxurious. The staff, Rachel and Christopher, were both charming and very hospitable. And I haven't even mentioned the absolutely delicious breakfasts. I can describe them here but won't do any of them any justice. They are Monique's family recipes. After reading the reviews, I unfortunately saw that I was not the only one this happened to.. I booked a room at 10 Clarke for a very special getaway. I chose this B&B based on the (mostly) good reviews and the famous breakfast. A few days after I made my reservation online, the owner, Monique, calls me to tell me there was an issue with my reservation. Apparently, she had *verbally* promised the room I booked to someone else, but because she never updated the system I was able to reserve it with my credit card online. She was basically asking me to give up the room to cover her mistake--less than 2 weeks before we were supposed to arrive. In our first call, she offered us to book another room, but I asked if I could call her the next day to think about it because I booked my specific room based on amenities I wanted. I called back the next day, willing to move to another room but she told me she was fully booked that weekend. I told her that was the only weekend we plan to be in the area and she just said she makes mistakes and just wanted to see if I was willing to give up the room. I then expressed that we had already paid for the room, angling that we just wanted to keep it then so our whole weekend wasn't ruined. She very quickly retorted that the card wasn't charged as if I had no ground to stand on. I can't even describe how uncomfortable this conversation was, and how pressured I was with guilt-tripping statements from Monique to cancel my reservation despite me still having the choice to keep it. It reached a point in the very cold call that I felt so uncomfortable to even stay there at all. She offered if I was ever back in the area she would "take care of us" but given how our interaction went and how poorly this entire situation was managed, we never plan to stay at 10 Clarke. read more

This is the best B&B I have ever stayed at. The house is gorgeous and immaculate inside and out. We were warmly greeted by Christopher who offered us fresh baked cookies, gave us some history of the house and made us feel truly welcome. Our room was absolutely gorgeous, the bed was super comfortable and we loved the heated bathroom floor. We enjoyed complimentary wine next to the stunning Xmas tree staying warm by the fire in the evening and wrapped up our stay with their amazing 3 course breakfast. My boyfriend took me on a surprise trip during which we got engaged and he chose 10 Clarke as our accommodations for the night. He couldn't have chosen better! The check-in process was easy and the hostess, Anna, was a joy to talk to. She was very sweet and welcoming and provided us with a great overview of activities in Frederick. The house is only about a 15 minute walk to downtown as well! We stayed in the Turret room which was beautiful and had an AMAZING bathroom with heated floors and a wonderful shower. The bed was super comfy and the room itself was spacious. Before we went out on the town, we sat on the porch and had a glass of the complimentary wine provided in the evenings. The next morning, we really enjoyed the multi-course breakfast and the company of the guests. Overall, I highly recommend 10 Clarke for a visit to Frederick. We will definitely be back! read more

Cute shops, restaurants, and canal walk along the water to enjoy during my quick stop in Maryland before heading North. 10 Clarke was a magical stay. Decorated perfectly, every room has a special touch. Complimentary wine and cookies + breakfast the next morning. Had a lovely conversation with a fellow guest in the living room before dinner. Beautifully renovated bathrooms. I don't have enough good things to say about this diamond in the rough. My girlfriend picked out the bed and breakfast for our trip to go eat at Volt! It was awesome! Very beautiful, and the staff was wonderful! Our room was spotless, and comfortable. They had music playing in the hotel that you could access from a touch panel in your room. Every room has its own private bathroom with a shower, tubes, and vanity mirror and sink. Our stay was quite and peaceful. Just outside of town so the walk to everything is convenient. We could walk everywhere in minutes. The staff was very courteous and friendly. They put out wine and cookies at night, cooked an amazing 3 course breakfast the next morning (the smoothie and signature makes chocolate waffles were amazing), and they are very knowledgeable with questions we had about the town, and what to do. Can't say enough about how great it was to stay at 10Clarke! My girlfriend and I wanted to get out of town (we live just about an hour south in Arlington) for our one year anniversary and wanted to spend a night in Frederick. I decided to check out B&B's in the area and was really glad I stumbled upon 10Clarke. All of the reviews I had read prior to our stay we're all very helpful and Monique was great. The room (Turret Room) was beautiful, as was the rest of the house. Breakfast was perfect and coffee was very good. My girlfriend has tea and there were an assortment from a local shop in Frederick. Also walking distance to downtown restaurants, bars and other sites. If you're staying a night or two in Frederick and going to be out and about downtown, stay at 10Clarke, it's worth the few extra bucks! read more

This review is long over do! As a wedding gift my Mom & sister surprised my now husband & I with staying at the 10 Clarke on our wedding night. It was fabulous. Monique made our stay there one we will never forget. She was so thoughtful even the morning after she prepare us detox smoothies to help recover from the wedding festivities the night before. I was able to get ready for the our wedding at 10 Clarke & have photos taken inside the house. The decor of the home truly takes you back in time. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! We had a reservation to stay here for our honeymoon. After several delays due to covid restrictions and being unable to travel, we decided to book a "stay cation" at this B&B. I made a reservation through booking.com online, and about 10 minutes after making that reservation I received a call and voicemail from Monique, the "proprietor," stating that "If you call and book through me directly then breakfast is included and you will actually save some money." I cancelled my booking.com reservation and made my reservation with Monique DIRECTLY- she asked if we were celebrating anything special. I told her we were celebrating our honeymoom. Monique asked if we would like any champagne in our room. After discussing the option (for $75 extra), I said "we would think about it because we were going out to dinner and likely going to get a bottle of wine so we might not need more champagne." Monique stated "Ok, well I will have it chilled here for you that night in case you change your mind." We arrived for our reservation and Monique DID NOT HAVE OUR RESERVATION. She then blamed me for "not calling her back." She did NOT seem to recall the discussion about the champagne, but she did not have a room. We were unable to stay for our honeymoon. She "seemed" sorry about the confusion and offered us to come back and stay for free in the future. "I can't make another room, but I can offer you a free night, and if you can come back on a Monday through Thursday then I can upgrade you to a suite." We ASKED HER MULTIPLE TIMES to put that in writing considering she messed up our reservation once - she said "I am the only one here- I messed up once I won't do it again." I called today to make the "free reservation" for a Saturday night this fall. Monique stated that the "offer" was for a Monday through Thursday only. THIS IS NOT WHAT SHE SAID AT THE TIME, WHICH IS WHY WE WANTED HER OFFER AND MISTAKE IN WRITING. I am a front line, essential, health care provider who works in the hospital. I do not have any additional weekday nights that I will be free to stay at her establishment. I explained what she had TOLD my husband and I at the time of our original messed up reservation, that she REFUSED to put in writing. She refused to honor her offer to correct HER mistake, and then proceeded to blame me on the phone again despite her REFUSAL to put the "free night" in writing. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! We had the nicest visit at 10 Clark. Monique was so communicative and welcoming. When she heard I was hungry after traveling she made cheddar biscuits and cookies to go with the white sangria that she served upon arrival. She gave us great recommendations for dining out and exploring the incredibly cute town of Frederick. The room was very comfortable and we slept well. Breakfast was off the chart incredible. Monique and Rachel served delicious chocolate malted waffles and super tasty eggs with homemade hot sauce. I would definitely recommend 10 Clark to anyone visiting Frederick. After reading the other reviews on TripAdvisor I was shocked by the service received by Monique, the owner of 10 Clarke Place. I called Monique about two weeks prior to our trip to enquire if she had two rooms available. She was very friendly on the telephone and let me know that she had two rooms available. We discussed our check-in time and she confirmed the reservation asking me to e-mail her my contract information. I emailed her with the requsted information immediately following our conversation and didn't receive a response. I followed up via e-mail again a week later and again no response. I then tried calling her and left her a voicemail asking to please call me back so I can make sure that we have a reservation. She didn't return my call. It was only after calling from a different telephone number the night before our reservation did she finally pick up the phone. She said that she didn't remember our initial conversation and that she didn't have any rooms available. She didn't even offer an apology. I've never had such an unprofessional interaction with someone who owns a place like this. We ended up booking the Hampton Inn at the last minute and the staff there made our trip more than enjoyable. They were far more professional that Monique and I highly encourage others to skip 10 Clarke Place and try something else when in Frederick. read more

We stayed her the night after our wedding and it could not have been easier. They were very flexible to help us get checked in so after the wedding we were able to go straight up to our room. The building is beautiful, and the food was tremendous. They source local ingredients and you can definitely tell. That almond crusted French toast definitely beat one from the Ritz Carlton I had on our honeymoon. Will definitely be coming back. read more

Lovely place to stay when visiting Frederick. Went for my anniversary and stayed in the Poet's Loft. Monique was wonderful and gave us some great recommendations. Super comfy bed, lots of space and private bath. Loved the eclectic decor throughout the house and the back yard with fire pit. The house is a piece of art and breakfast in the am was just as good as dinner the night before at Volt. Located a short walk to downtown, it's perfectly located. Monique of 10 Clarke is a wonderful host. I called for a reservation, and unfortunately the rooms were all booked. Instead of letting me go with a "sorry, try another time," she referred me to the B&B down the street. Not only did she make the referral, but she also made my reservation for me online while I was on the phone. She could have just given me the website to reserve myself, but she knew that there was only one room left there and wanted to make sure I was booked. The owner of the B&B where we stayed was out of town, so Monique served as our host there as well. She was so helpful and accessible if we needed anything. The next day she stopped by during breakfast to make sure all was well. She had great recommendations for adventures in the area, and she offered us a tour of her property. It is gorgeous! We saw one guest on her way out, and she raved about the stay. The guests at breakfast when we toured the place were having a great time. Only reason that I don't feel that I can give five stars is because I didn't stay there so I can't weigh in on the rooms, which is most important to me in a B&B. But I can't wait to return to Frederick for a weekend adventure, and I will definitely stay at 10 Clarke. read more

Pros: We received a very warm greeting upon our arrival!! Our bags were carried to our rooms. We received great information about the local area. We were allowed to check in early. Everything was very clean and tidy and the owners provided just about everything you could need (soap, shampoo, conditioner, bottles of water, chocolates, cookies, wine, Q-tips, mouthwash, etc.). Breakfast was delicious! Cons: Door locks were a bit noisy and difficult to use. Not sure why there were shells and beachy decor in some areas of the house (seemed out of place in a Victorian home). The breakfasts are amazing, organic with products sourced locally. We enjoyed the hospitality of our hostess Monique, her very able assistant Ian, and the other lovely guests. We enjoyed relaxing in the main room and we loved the wine and scotch! Our room (The Lace Room) was amazing and beautiful - the bed is new and completely comfortable. The private bathroom for this room is down the hall and it is gorgeous with a wonderful soaking tub and great separate shower. We want to return and stay in the currently under-construction "Poet's Loft." I cannot recommend 10 Clarke enough! read more

I was so impressed with this little bed and breakfast! This weekend was a total surprise to me: my boyfriend took it as an opportunity for a weekend getaway to plan a proposal. When we arrived, the Victorian-styled house is tucked in a quiet neighborhood a short walk to the heart of downtown Frederick. The house itself is perfectly eclectic. There are beautiful crystal glasses, nicely mismatched furnishes... it truly felt like we were walking a little bit back in time. Downstairs, there is a bar open to guests with various brandy or bourbon and wine, along with some homebaked goods for snacking. The outside porch, with its adorable swing, is perfect for sipping said wine on a beautiful night. My (now fiance!) and I stayed in the Turet room, which was amazingly comfortable. The decor fits in well with the rest of the house with its vintage theme, and I was particularly happy with the his/her robes and slippers and illuminating sink. The fun, vintage, touches really were impressive! Finally, I cannot say enough about the breakfast. Monique and Ian prepare the breakfast every morning with food that is locally sourced or purchased the previous day at the farmer's market. It's high quality with the most delicioous cocoa waffles with fresh peaches, smoothies, and a frittata with homemade siracha sauce. We will definitely be back! This bed and breakfast is awesome! The house itself was beautiful. Monique, Bob, Michelle and Margot were all warm and welcoming. They went out of their way to prepare a special breakfast to meet a dietary request for us. We had quite an incredible experience compared to those in most commercial hotels, everything was included from the sparkling water to the morning coffee. If you stay here in cold weather, they have heated beds to help with the chill. Side benefit: you may see Violet, the cutest little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, at breakfast time. read more

10 Clarke B&B steals from its customers The 10 Clarke Bed & Breakfast stole a $500 deposit from my family. We booked rooms and were asked to give this deposit in advance. There was no written contract. What we did receive was an email from the establishment that all cancellations need to be made at least 7 before the date of the stay. We needed to cancel and did so within 30 days before the booked date, in compliance with their cancellation clause. Despite the proprietor's clams now being made that verbal cancellation terms were given, there was actually no mention of the deposit being non-refundable at the time of the booking. The proprietor refuses to return the deposit - this is theft of our hard earned dollars that they have no right to. She has done nothing to earn these funds, and in fact had already rented out some of the rooms for those dates. As can be clearly seen, 10 Clarke B&B Steals from its customers. In addition to the above abhorrent business practices, we found the proprietor to be have a very short and unpleasant personality, difficult to get to return our calls and emails, and totally lacking a view of serving her customers. Everything she stated was selfish and about her own difficulties in staying profitable - this does not give anyone the right to steal, and in fact admits her motives. If you want to deal with an inflexible host and a sour disposition this is your place, otherwise don't waste your money and avoid this B&B failure. Our situation involved a wedding that had been declared illegal to hold due to Covid - if you're considering this B&B for wedding guests, save yourself the stress. I had a really nice solo stay (although very short) at 10 Clarke. Everyone I interacted with was very helpful and positive. The house itself is full of character. It is well furnished and the seating areas were perfect to relax for a time. I enjoyed a glass of complimentary wine beside the fire to wind down after my day. They also had refillable glass bottles of water around the house in case you were thirsty. I liked that it wasn't wasteful. I also had a few of the "ranger" cookies, they were tasty. The Poet's loft was really cool. It's at the top of the property and you have access to the turret which was neat. Lots of plants in the bathroom. Nice shower with a handheld fixture as a bonus. Good soap etc. All newly remodeled. Lock on the door was a little finicky, but I got used to it. I ended up liking that it wasn't perfect; It added character and felt unique. Bed was a double and comfortable with a memory foam topper. I think I saw a patio out back, but it was colder and I didn't check out. Breakfast was excellent and they accommodated my 8am sharp request. Thank You! 5 minute walk to town is perfect. The only downside? They don't allow kids, which spoiled my plan for the next visit I was planning.. If you don't have kids (or aren't bringing them) I guess that could be a good thing. Either way I enjoyed the people and property and would recommend in a heartbeat. Frederick is a great town. Had lots of pleasant interactions with its people and places. It is also great for biking. We had a mixed stay. The downstairs is beautiful. In the early evening, we had a really lovely hour in front of the fireplace and were wowed by all of the custom wallpaper. Breakfast was also very good. If it weren't for the below, I probably would have given 4 stars (one star deducted because our room (Lace Room) could use some TLC. Our bathroom was beautiful though). The main reason for 2 stars - the owner had a smallish party with her friends the night of our stay. The group was extremely loud until well after midnight, with the house becoming quiet only around 2 or 3 a.m. We were baffled by it and left feeling like we hadn't slept. We have a toddler at home and I am pregnant with baby #2. This was intended to be a relaxing night away for us. Would recommend investing in white noise machines for each room - noise bounces around the place. This would not have covered the noise of the party, but it would help every other night when guests are opening/shutting doors, walking around on floors above you, etc. read more
