It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.

I am deeply disturbed by how Camp Highroad handled a serious health and safety incident involving…read moremy seven-year-old daughter. My daughter attended Pioneer Camp during the July heat. When I picked her up after approximately eight hours at camp, she was visibly lethargic, looked unwell, and repeatedly begged me for water. She immediately drank an entire 24-ounce bottle and was later taken to the emergency room for dehydration and heat-related symptoms. My daughter told me that she did not have her water bottle that day, repeatedly asked her counselor for water, and was told there were no cups available. Camp leadership later gave me a completely different account, stating that staff repeatedly offered her extra water bottles and that she refused every one of them. I was not present during the camp day, so I cannot personally say which account camp leadership believes is accurate. What I know firsthand is the condition in which my seven-year-old child was returned to me. Even accepting the camp's version, I cannot understand how staff responsible for supervising a young child during outdoor summer activities could allegedly watch her repeatedly refuse water throughout an entire day and take no further action. No one contacted me. No one reported a hydration concern at pickup. No one sought medical assistance. My child was simply returned to me lethargic, desperately thirsty, and sick enough to require an emergency room visit. I initially approached the camp privately because our family had loved Camp Highroad, my daughter cared for her counselor, and I genuinely wanted to understand what had gone wrong and how the camp would prevent it from happening again. Instead, camp leadership repeatedly stated that every safety protocol had been followed, relied on a liability waiver, refused responsibility for the hospital bill, and would not acknowledge that any breakdown had occurred. The camp did refund the week's tuition. This is not about attacking an individual counselor or damaging anyone's reputation. It is about whether the adults entrusted with a seven-year-old child took appropriate steps to ensure she remained hydrated and medically safe during a long day of outdoor activities in extreme summer heat. Parents should know how this incident occurred, the condition in which my child was returned to me, and how leadership responded when I raised the concern. Based on our experience, I no longer trust Camp Highroad to protect my daughter's basic health and safety.

My 10 yr old daughter just returned from her first "Camp Highroads" sleepaway camp... and she had a…read moreblast. She'd been there before, with a YMCA day camp; and also on a field trip with school. But this year she and 3 friends decided to all do the sleep away camp together... and it sounds like it was the experience of a lifetime. I could tell when I picked her up that she really loved it - she was hugging the counselors and genuinely sorry to be leaving. She chattered the whole way home about the experiences... horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, creek hiking (which, she emphasizes, is very different), sleep outs (which is sleeping outside under the stars), swimming (in a pool), playing games, fishing, ziplining, archery and more. Whoa! And with 3 of her best friends. What could be better. The typical sleeping arrangements (when you're not doing a sleep out) were 6 girls in a cabin with one female chaperone. (It is a co-ed camp, but boys have separate sleeping quarters). Apparently the exact arrangements vary by groups/ages. And yes, they had a rat one night and a mouse a few times, in the cabin. There are separate bath houses. It's rustic. No AC. There's a great story about a mouse in the bathhouse and her sitting on the toilet screaming.... (I am probably not supposed to share that story, but it's funny.) It's definitely camping. It is a Christian based camp, and there are some Bible lessons. While she did confirm that, it didn't really hit the "highlights" reel. Overall, it sounds to me like a classic sleep away summer camp with all the elements of adventure you'd hope for, only better. She can not wait to go back next year.

Its great on a nice day. However, there are some drawbacks. Notably, if there are other people there, you basically have nowhere to go as the beach is maybe 10 feet across. There are often people fishing, which is ok, but what is not ok is the complete lack of trash cans. This has the unfortunate result of the beach being littered with soda and beer cans and sometimes food containers. I wish people would not so freely litter in such a nice area, but the lack of trash bins means people are unlikely to get the hint or change their ways.

There's a small ramp to help lower a canoe or kayak down and some awkward steps. They remind me of baby steps but maybe it is like that so no one falls. There is a nice walkway/ramp built to walk down to the water, but remember that the water line is Maryland so if you have anything that might be questionable in the state, don't bring it with you. I feel the price is a bit high as the amenities offered are the same as the regular cabins ($80-$85 per night). The firefly did just recently add a window AC unit and one electric plug prior to our stay. There are no lights so a lantern is still needed. We didn't use the charcoal grill as it was rusted, we opted for cooking on the fire instead. They do not allow outside firewood and they charge $7 a bag for wood and $5 for kindling. Unfortunately their firewood was very thinly chopped, maybe 1-2 inch slivers so the firewood didn't last long. The shower and bathrooms were clean and close to the campsite which we enjoyed. The area felt very safe. Though there appeared to be a ring camera with lights just above the open showers which I found a bit odd, I assume it was pointing to the other side of the building. Easily accessible dumpster and water for cooking/washing dishes. Parking is very hard to come by so if you bring more than one vehicle this may be a problem. The cabin was well kept, clean and comfy mattresses. Lights didn't work on the upper balcony but we enjoyed the lower deck. The only thing I found off putting were over kill on signage around the campsite. Quiet hours with a $250 fine for noises past 11pm or before 7am, signs regarding usage of amenities .... It appeared they didn't really want you using too many resources. Overall, we really enjoyed the cabin, the addition of the AC was great, facility was well kept, but I felt it was over priced.

I looked through my Fairfax Parktakes account, and found lessons that were affordable. They are scheduled on the weekends. I have Sunday classes. My following lessons were in a group setting with another instructor and were just as helpful and great. I would share her name but I'm afraid everyone will call and steal her from me as she only gives lessons one day of the week! (I know, so not the way of Yelp...shoot me) Not only do they give the attention needed to give proper lessons, but they really reinforce the care, time and attention that's needed to properly care for and bond with a horse. You literally start your lesson by grooming your horse (to bond), tacking your horse (with guidance, of course), and doing a little ground work. Lessons aren't rushed and the instructor always ensures that your safety and comfort level are top priority. Oh, and they teach English riding, not Western! I plan to continue private lessons to advance my skills and overall knowledge of horses and maybe eventually do some more group lessons. If you are interested in horseback riding lessons, I'd say go here. Also, for the work and level of guidance, the prices here are hard to beat. From my understanding, the farm offers additional services but I'm not sure what exactly they are. It is a bit far if you're coming from the city and its surrounding areas but it's totally worth it-- if not just for the lessons then to also get a fresh breath of rural air and to take in the amazing scenery.

Let family or friends know where you are. Never know. Every town is safe til it's not.
