It was built by a former artist for Disney Studios and the builder, Lawrence Joseph worked on all of it for decades. There are adorable cottages and a view from the street is super. I think some of it may be occupied, I am not sure, so I did not venture far, just the front and back yard and stopped when I saw what looked like an apartment building. It is an LA Historical Landmark and just so cute. It is near Sony pictures. It almost looks like you are walking into a movie set. There is a great garden and a pond and it really does look like a Hobbit house. We were not there long, maybe 15 minutes and did not need to be. So, if you have 15 minutes and want to see a super cool house go take a peek.

The views are beautiful, especially in the spring and fall when everything is green and wildflowers are blooming. The road winds through the hills, so you get nonstop scenic views. Driving with the top down and the wind in your hair makes it even better ~ super relaxing and enjoyable. It's the kind of drive where you just take it slow and enjoy the ride. There are several lookout spots where you can pull over, catch an amazing sunset, and later see Hollywood and San Fernando Valley city lights at night. Plus, there are plenty of spots perfect for Instagram ~ worthy photos. Definitely worth the drive.

I first drove up there way back in the early 90s, and I remember being totally blown away by how big Los Angeles looked from up high. I have been back plenty of times since then, and that twisty drive along the top of the hills honestly never gets old. It is a great place to just cruise around, especially when you pull over at the dirt patches to look down at the city lights. Wilder was very West Coast-oriented when it came to noirish cinema, with "Ace In The Hole" (1951) being more satirical and my favorite noir movie, "Double Indemnity" (1944) being more of an enduring, classic black and white Los Angeles-centered noir film. More broadly, I am always interested in Los Angeles primarily because I have so many relatives who live out there and culturally speaking, it is a place which has long interested me, whether due to books: think John Fante, Joan Didion, Bukowski, Walter Mosley, Eve Babitz, and "City of Quartz" author Mike Davis or music: Arthur Lee and Love, Black Randy and the Metrosquad, David Axelrod, War and for '80s-'90s hip hip aficionados, The Pharcyde and NWA. I also think it is cool to look up old cultural spots (before my time) once located on Sunset Boulevard like Citadel d'Haiti, which once hosted Fela Kuti. Artist Ed Ruscha viewed Sunset Boulevard as perhaps the most quintessential thoroughfare in Los Angeles. Quoted in the Unframed blog, Ruscha stated, "I looked at Sunset Boulevard like a 22-mile-long canvas, with an evolving history...It had fluid motion, fluid stories, one long horizontal ribbon, and I always thought about it. It just asked to be documented." So, all of these ideas I have of Sunset Boulevard and Los Angeles, which are kind of all over the place, bring me to my latest fascination: the billboard for the Netflix movie "The Last House" (2026), which was situated near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Selma Ave back during August 6-8, 2026. I have fond memories of watching Tim Pingel's livestreams near the billboard. Sometimes he would use a drone to catch a closer view. The guy pictured walking around inside the billboard, Nathan Shoop, was the subject of an interview in which he came off as funny and sarcastic. Regarding the movie, the general consensus amongst the chat crowd was that the movie isn't good, but the billboard was obviously a big hit. Haha!

It is also a very congested road to drive on. There are billboards everywhere advertising the newest movies coming out. Some historic buildings include the Sunset Tower, Chateau Marmont, Cinerama Dome and the Beverly Hills Hotel. A popular place to grab a quick bite is at Carney's - a yellow Union Pacific rail car that serves hamburgers and hot dogs. The Sunset Strip portion of Sunset Boulevard has been known for its nightlife scene going back to the 1950's. Many songs and films have been made about this area. I have driven up and down the Sunset Strip on a number of occasions. The Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy are popular clubs that launched the careers of many bands over the years. The Comedy Store is a comedy club that has been around since the 70's. Back in the early days, I used to hang out at the old Tower Records store on Sunset Blvd. I used to go there to buy new CD's and vinyl for my music collection. Amoeba Records is another music store that I love to chill at.

I went with a couple of friends for dinner- we were around the area and thought it was an opportune time to show them a place they weren't familiar with! I've been here since I was a kid, and though some things changed, alot hasn't! This was during a world cup game, so it was very lively at pub areas as they were broadcasting live. Everyone was so invested, from the patrons, chefs, servers, and even line cooks! Went to a stall selling the 'best corned beef sandwich' from Magee's kitchen. The servers and cook were super nice and the corned beef on display made my mouth water! It was very good, and paired with their blood orange soda, wasn't too heavy! It was a big enough sandwich that I took the other half home! I also got a cornbread muffin from Gumbo pot- which was good but a little dry. There's plenty of shade, though the area is mostly outdoors- lots of trees and buildings with covers and awnings. There's a fancy French market in there and plenty of eating options (though open hours vary). Come by this historic stop, walk through the Grove, and enjoy the hustle and bustle!

Make sure you check the parking rates sign by the entrance and plan accordingly. You can also park in the Grove's multi-story parking structure, but they will not accept validation from Farmer's Market businesses. The Grove also has Valet parking on premises. Venue 4 stars: Nice rustic but well-kept open air set up that has been around for almost 100 years! It is focused on local and international food. As you stroll through the market you will encounter gourmet food stores (such as Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Store), meat counters (such as Huntington Meats), takeout restaurants (such as Stara Polish Pierogi and Sausage, Banana Leaf Singaporean restaurant and Oh My Dumpling Chinese food), and fine dining restaurants (such as ETTORE OSTERIA Italian and Monsieur Marcel French Bistro).
